Lego City 2023 Leaks, Rumours, Speculation And Discussion
Silverhurst replied to Powered by Bricks's topic in LEGO Town
Friends sets are often too good to pass up, and since no one in our household likes them, I save the figures up until I have a lot of 50 to put on eBay with no reserve. The big lots often sell for a decent amount, and I hope whoever buys them has fun with them. -
Amazing. How did you create the interior structure? Is it Lego throughout, or Lego built around a frame?

Winter Village Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Silverhurst replied to Gearslover01's topic in LEGO Town
Here are a couple more town related ideas: A Christmas tree sales lot with a trailer for the salesman. Would need to include a Charlie Brown tree too! A bandstand gazebo with full band. Yes, the post office kind of came with one, but only as a small side build. Scrooge's house, or Tiny Tim's. A horse pulled sleigh ride diorama with a stone bridge over a stream. An antique water tower with the name of the village on the side of the tank. A stone and glass greenhouse with Christmas plants inside (and maybe a puddle of Frosty? lol) A church (but we know this won't happen). -
Wayne Manor!

And not just the money. Space is often just as important a deciding factor. I would imagine that building the ultimate city with every town/city related set ever made would require a large pole barn or decent sized commercial space.

Or maybe a Nutcracker? Lego seems to like them well enough too. -
what do you call your lego city/ names for lego city?
Silverhurst replied to legoguy1984's topic in LEGO Town
My city seems to be named "Gityerhandsoffmyton" -
Just download the instructions, see what you are missing from your inventory (or can't do without) and bricklink what you need. If you are willing to do a minor recolor of rare and expensive parts, you can usually get the same look for an affordable price, and you can always keep your eyes open for if/when the missing pieces are re=released or become more affordable, or when you have some cash burning a hole and are ready to splurge. Unless the box is important to you, I see no advantage in holding out for a complete set at marked up prices.

Very nice design and execution! I love how the doubled walls give those really nice window sills. They take up extra space, but take your build to the next level.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Silverhurst replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
That's a good question, and I find it weird too. I always assumed that they put it there to decorate the space as seen from the back door, while providing support to the stairs, but didn't try to overthink it from there. Well, there is cheap, and there is Cheap. I sell sets to people I know in other states for straight retail when they are first released, since I don't have sales tax. On an expensive set that can add up to way more savings than the cost for me to ship it to them. In exchange I get the VIP points and any GWP. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Silverhurst replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Looking through his list it doesn't include all modulars, even though the title says so. It lacks Detective's Office, Parisan Restraunt, Palace Cinema, and Market Street. Does include a few early WV sets and all fairgrounds up to Roller Coaster, Haunted House, plus a couple of Friends fairground sets. Includes Disney train and lots of track. Has most Collectible minifigs from series 4 up, but not all. Includes some city vehicles, roads, boats, and misc. city decorations including a long detailed seawall. Includes maybe 20 lb of spare parts. Looks like someone who got into Lego about 2015-16, picked up some older modulars to fill in, and gave up recently. Nicely painted walls and room setup, but looks to have never been completed, or else they've already sold a bunch previously. I will total up the actual value before going to look, and would probably offer 75% of FMV so that I could sell what I don't need for a moderate ROI. I'm guessing that it will be well under 10k. Have to see. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Silverhurst replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Someone locally has their entire Lego city for sale for 10k. Includes all the modulars through the Boutique Hotel plus a lot more. I'm actually considering going to look at it this weekend if it is still available. -
True, but I did like the green color and logo/fascia design of the City set better than the Friends set.

Oh, I agree to a point. And a few updated Western, Adventurers, Rock Raiders etc. themed sets here and there would be great, and that is basically what Lego has been giving us the last couple of years in a couple of themes. There has been a lot of love for the base classics in my opinion, but what I read and hear from many AFOL's is that the trickle of classic sets isn't enough, and they want the actual old themes brought back. Castle and pirates have both been getting a lot of love. Classic space got the movie sets and anniversary sets. I do know that a lot of Classic Space fans don't consider the modern sets to be a substitute, even if they incorporate modified space logos on the suits or flags. They don't want the greys and whites, they want the blue/grey/trans yellow, or maybe Blacktron or whatever they find nostalgic. To me alternative series sets are just fine. Lone Ranger instead of Western was one example. Maybe there will be a new western tie in someday. Maybe parts from Indiana Jones can substitute for Adventurers. I don't know. And maybe Lego would just get smart and release some classic series battlepacks, bringing back new versions of classic minifigs from old series with a small build (maybe loaded with printed or special parts that would help those who love those themes). Cheap, easy, and affordable. That was one thing that helped make KK and some other themes great. Small builds with a couple of minifigs. Those were also great as gifts for the kids.

I guess my opinion on this subject would probably fit better into the unpopular opinions thread, but personally I'm glad most of the classic themes are dead or are only being trickled out. I have been around Lego since long before any of the "Classic" series existed, and I have purchased Lego on and off throughout those years up to and including now. I own Fort Legorado, and personally other than the minifigs and printed pieces, it was pretty boring. I own several of the early castles, and various Knight's Kingdom 1 & 2 sets. Love the KK sets, the early castles are sitting in mixed bins somewhere. Again, it was just the specialty pieces that I've used elsewhere. Classic space barely appealed to me, and space has been a huge part of my RL, I just found it too blah and boring. But the later Mars sets and the last few rounds of City Space have been great. Actually far better than any of the Classic Space sets, in my opinion. I think that the only older (pre-color change) sets that came with minifigures that I tend to keep together were the old Adventurers sets and my yellow head Star Wars sets. The Egypt sets especially hold up pretty well to current offerings. Oh, and the Studio monster sets, those are great for bringing out for Halloween decorating. Would I love to have a rebop of my original Train Ferry set? Nope. Nostalgic to me, and sits displayed on a shelf, but honestly compared to newer sets from just about any series made it is severely lacking. And I rarely touch my other old original parts, like garages or old style windows or tires or trees/bushes, or even 70's vehicle sets or Shell station, etc. Nostalgia is great, but if you look through your rose colored glasses too much you miss what is right in front of you. We have some of the best sets ever offered available right now, and minus some specific parts that are no longer being made (lion head brick is one I wish had been produced in more colors, for example) you can build just about anything you want from the past, and make it better if you want. I think the biggest problem today is that there are just too many great sets, and it is impossible to keep up with just the ones you can afford, little alone all of them that you really want. That can actually lead to burn out. Luckily for me I've never burned out for too long.

It wasn't even that long where I live. I saw it at Target and Walmart right after it was released, but never saw it on the shelves again. I felt the full retail price was too high here in the US, so was waiting, hoping it would go on 20% sale at least, but never found it. At least when I decide to build a version of it, it won't be hard to put together a version of it I like, since most parts are fairly readily available, and those that aren't can either be skipped or substituted (for example I never use blue glass).

Another thing that Lego could add to it's designs to differentiate from prior buildings and bring more variability to the current street layout, as well as being architecturally correct, is overhanging upper stories. There are lots of buildings in cities where the upper stories overhang the sidewalk almost all the way to the curb.

You know when a set just begs to be modded that it is something special. I picked up a pair of them for my wife's birthday next month. I know "she" is going to have a blast with this one!

As to Cadillac never making a pink '59, this isn't actually true. Wood Rose Metallic and Persian Sand Metallic were both pink hues that were offered, though they aren't the Pepto Bismol shade most people do think of and that would match your Lego creation. Other shades of pink, like Mountain Laurel, were also available on special order and would have their paint codes stamped "SPEC". I own a '59 Chevy Viking with a "SPEC" paint code, though it is orange and not pink. I have several friends who also own various GM cars and trucks from the 50's and 60's who also have "SPEC" coded tags. It wasn't all that unusual back in that time frame to order a custom color on a car. Slightly off topic, but still in the same vein, by the 80's in order to get a special color, dealers usually had to order a larger quantity in that color for GM to produce them, and those were usually for fleet customers, but not always. I remember a number of Silverado's being ordered by a local dealer in the late 80's and early 90's for regular sale in custom colors simply because he really liked those colors that were available on other GM vehicles, but not the Silverado.

I think that is likely as close as anyone will ever be able to get to the actual car in 8-wide. Great job, as always!

Winter Village Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I want a Reindeer Paddock that works with Santa's Workshop and other related sets. This would include baby reindeer, a stable, and the Reindeer Games (however they would envision that). -
Start looking in threads here or for videos on YouTube for various content creators that feature their cities to get ideas. There are a number of them out there. Going to a local Lego convention and seeing what people build in person could also be helpful. There is no such thing as an ultimate city, only the one that you build that makes you happy. I doubt there is anyone out there that can actually afford to build their true ultimate city dream layout, no matter how rich. It always comes down to compromises you make with yourself and how you deal with the challenges you face, whether it be money, space, realism vs. abstract, or even simply what style(s) you like.

I have to disagree about the city line being bad the last couple of years.. While most sets aren't to my taste, they tend to fit the targeted age market with some appealing to me as well, After you've been around Lego for a number of years it's to be expected that many sets will no longer appeal to you, since you've likely filled those niches in your collection, but Lego has to market to people just entering the world of Lego. This year I've added the Electric Sports Car and Park Tractor to our collection, and there are some nice looking sets coming. Last year saw the Grocery Store and lunar sets (my kid's favorites last year) and the sporty police car and very nice Mobile Crane, not to mention the farm stuff. I would have gotten the Sandwich Shop if it had been available to buy. 2021 gave us the Tractor and Fire Station starter and main sets, both very nice, but not much else besides the wildlife sets and roadplates (which we all love). We didn't buy a single 2020 city set. So if anything, in our opinion the last couple of years have actually been an improvement from 2020.
