TOMBCLONE: Wild West MOC Series
WesternOutlaw replied to I Scream Clone's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Yee-haw! I Scream Clone does it, and very nice I will add. I reck'n I'll be back for a more critical review of each of your Tombclone buildings. Looks fantastic so far! It really is great to see interest in the Wild West theme - one of those "warm fuzzies" for me. -
Ya best grab your guns! Two fantastic LEGO Western towns in one week - first Pif Paf City by Kris Kelvin and now Tombclone by I Scream Clone.

Over the past several days, I've been trying to build a locomotive for my Santa Fe Train collection. Inspired by the wonderful creations by SavaTheAggie (Tony), Playmobil's Western Train, and numerous images on the web, I finally completed this 4-4-0 locomotive. What a difficult time I had from the boiler, to the wheels, to everything else. Several rebuilds and a lot of experiments, and I must admit that I'm still not happy. Trains are tricky, especially if trying to replicate an image/inspiration model (with limited pieces in the colors you need). Here's the locomotive: Tender Sold Separately

Welcome Sergio - yet another very nice creation. This is really a unique little shunter, and you did a very nice job at constructing in LEGO.

Welcome to Train Tech Walter, Sebby, and Legoroni. It's nice to see you guys joining our LEGO Train community. I hope you enjoy the forum.

The Euro Two Track listed at the Train Depot is a nice layout that allows control of two trains with one transformer.

Yes - aside from the TTX Intermodal, LEGO did not offer any additional coaches/wagons for the BNSF. If you plan to build some custom wagons, I would recommend black or green box cars, and/or some hoppers. The My Own Train Tanker would also make a nice addition.

Orange, black, and light grey is a beautiful color scheme for new EB member Sergio's recent train creation. Based on the actual locomotive, the Asthlom CP2601 is certainly a sharp engine.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions regarding a train for Old Mexico's Town with No Name. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to attempt to build a Santa Fe Western Train with more detailed MOCs than that of my past train creations. I'm quite pleased with this first addition, a small Santa Fe Hopper:

I wanted to revisit this masterpiece because I think the creation deserves a critical review, as many provide for official LEGO sets. Dusting off the old black cowboy hat, let me share my thoughts: The Phantom Rider's Sharp Shooter Review So, I'll divide this into six components, the Station, Water Tower, Saloon, Hotel, Train Hand Car & Track, and Wagon Train Station My personal favorite of the collection. First off, I love the use of the different color tiles used to create the platform. It really gives the old wooden look to the base. The dark tan walls with the brown and black really make the color pallette unique, and I don't believe I've seen these colors mixed before. That dark tan is fantastic, especially with the smooth tiles used for siding. The roof is perfect. I notice that in some areas you've used 1x3s roof sections as opposed to 4x3s. Whether intentional or not, it comes across as added detail. I like the design of the windows which I always struggle with when trying to capture Wild West architecture. I would not have thought to use the arched door, but it looks very good capturing a more wooden look. The clock tower looks just fine with the newer white clock pieces, although they are rather modern. Some custom clock decals would have been a nice option as well. Speaking of decals, very nice Stagecoach and Steam Train decals adding to the already superb station. To ask a Klauss-Dieter question, does it have an interior? In any case, I think you've really captured an authentic look of a classic WW station. Water Tower A very difficult construction I'm sure. I've really struggled w/ these in the past. Your choice of grey and brown is an interesting color combination, but definately looks good and provides some nice contrast compared to an all brown tower. I like how you were able to wrap the brown 1x4 tiles around the upper section to create the round look. It's too bad the top radar dish doesn't come in brown. Nice railing on top and a very nice spout mechanism. The grey base looks rickety as it should (but I'm sure your construction is sturdy). I am interesting in knowing how the repair man plans to get down without a ladder. Saloon What a nice construction, and definately large as well. I think what really makes this building unique is the way you created the siding. Interesting design. I'll have to see how you did this. I really like the top section/facade hiding those WW sharp shooters. Great Saloon sign as well, and I like that unique hitching post for the horses. My only recommendation for this building is perhaps some accent color around the windows/along the sides (green would have looked very nice), but then again I see you were going for a brown wooden saloon here. Also, some saloon doors (like those contained in the new Toy Story set) would have added to the look. Hotel Very nice colors for the hotel. That dark red with white looks perfect. I love the fancy white arches used in the window design and the white fence pieces really work. I must admit that I've tried using the fence pieces before in making a few balconies/railing, and they've never come out well. Perhaps it's the additional white in your Hotel that makes them look good. The side section with the logs also add unique character to the Hotel. I like that almost Spanish-roof design, more like a tin roof (however to describe it - it looks good). The brick chimney is fantastic, and very nice Norwich Inn decal. The other decal on the ground floor looks a bit dark, but it may just be the picture. I can only make out a gun (I think). Train Hand Car & Track Just the concept/idea to add a hand car and some track is superb. With a smaller train-related creation, it doesn't take away from being able to see Pif Paf. I really like the use of the grey wheels adding to the old-time feel. Those sacks of flour/gold (or even milk jugs), or whatever they are intended to be add to the fantastic detail. Nice use of the bumpers without train wheels. Adding to the quality of the overall scene is the train track on a bed of gravel. I may try this design myself, as I think yours came out really well. Brown tiles for railroad ties and the round 1x1s - perfect! Wagon I'm not quite sure about the wagon design. Although it has some really nice details, it seems a bit too wide, maybe even low. I like the side railing and the extras like the brown backpack on the side. Nice figs; however, with some interesting torso designs. I love how you made their legs hanging over. Great custom touch. OVERALL Piff Paff City will go down in the LEGO Wild West history books as one of the nicest western towns, compared to only that of Legohaulic's. Overall, this is what separates basic builders (like me) from the experts. Packed with details (and I almost forgot to mention the use of the dark tan plates for the ground), this diorama clearly demonstrates that Wild West interest is alive and well, and what an expert builder can do with a little imagination and a ton of bricks. 5 Stars! and I tip my hat to Kris Kevin!

Some really great vehicles have been coming from the Town forum lately. Check out this 1948 Tucker Torpedo by Brickadier General:

Oh crap! Great solving. Which one of us will we be using? Dibs on a funny bone.

Definately! I was actually thinking about a 2-6-2 Prairie loco with some wagons and a caboose, but still not sure. Thanks BMW. Good tips, esp the weathering/dust that I had not considered. I like the new set, esp. the new cow catcher piece that will definately be a useful part. Also, I think I'll be watching 3:10 to Yuma this evening. Appreciate all the tips.

Jamie: thank you again for visiting EB and answering questions about this fantastic set. I have a few myself: 1) Where do you and the other LEGO designers draw your inspiration for creating modulars like this? Do you collect a large number of images of real-life buildings and scale down? or is it more of a trial & error type of building style taking many different architectural components and pieceing them together? 2) Why a department store or "shop"? Is it simply because LEGO had not offered one before? When the Fire Brigade was created, had this 4th creation already been in the planning or did it come much later? 3) I know you probably can't answer this (and it has been asked a bit differently above), but many can't help to notice that this caps off the Modular street (like the opposite end of Cafe Corner). Is there still hope for a future modular building after this set if sales are good? or was the corner build sort of an intentional end to the four sets? Of the three existing modulars, I really like the style of the Fire Brigade, although they've all been superb sets with unique attributes. I must say that I'm really looking forward to adding this to the end of the street with its color palette and terrific design. Love the yellow SHOP sign!

This is absolutely amazing! Where can I buy one? Honestly, this is one of the best Wild West dioramas that I've seen. I think this is very much deserving of a review/feedback for each of the buildings (especially the train station). Now this is the sort of thing that would make an awesome LEGO exclusive WW set. (goes and puts Wild West hat back on) Truly fantastic!

Thanks for sharing the early picture review BTT. My thoughts: This is really a nice little/mid-sized set. I love the Farm theme and the new pig piece is a fantastic new addition to LEGO's piece assortment. While another tractor would not have been my first choice for an additional farm set, the pig pen and trailer make up for it. In fact, I really like the trailer. It's definately a lot smaller than the grain trailer contained in the previous Farm set and the use of the bendable side plates will serve quite useful for other creations, esp. a train wagon (perhaps I may build down the road). One thing; however, that I think looks awkward is the hitch which seems a bit blocky/clumpsy. The back section looks interesting. The pig pen has a bit of a Classic Town charm, although it would have been great to see the return of the sink/faucett piece. It's interesting to see the use of a brown fence to raise the back section, but I think it works. The overall color selection will blend in nicely with the large Farm. I like the new female fig, but it looks like Mr. Green Jeans appears again, this time with a red cap instead of tan fidora (I call window washer attire). Overall, I like this set, and will most likely buy when available. Oink! EDIT: Please note: I have added a poll for our Townie fans to vote, and indexed, but your images are too large. Site guidelines are no larger than 800x600. But still, thank you for the review.
