  1. It is a company in the UK that sells slippers and umbrellas, that sort of thing. Not sure what the meaning is in this context though? Same as Durango, I am sure they are not talking about a load of LEGO bricks falling out of some slippers strapped to the top of a Mexican State? But I have no idea what the meanings are in this particular case?
  2. That is an interesting read and does help to understand the reasons better, it was just that whilst the threads on here discussed the pros and cons none of them seemed to address the why, so thanks for your help in finding that.
  3. I have to admit that they do look nice all together like that, kind of like in a marshaling yard. What sort of diorama are you going to build, any hints?
  4. Are you looking for some type of trestle support for the raised lines, like an old wooden bridge of the type you see in westerns or do you want a way to build an elevated area of land on which the train can run like a hill, but one using not so many bricks, or hinged slopes? Perhaps if we have some inclination of where it is going and exactly what it is for then we can help? Have you got any photographs of what you have built so far that we can see for context?
  5. In my main station I have used slopes at one end, although it is not much of a gradient as they are already going from a raised platform that the station is built onto. At the other end which goes to the ground I have used steps, but then again this is also fenced off just for the use of station staff, but I guess steps would work.for any people. Having said that any of the hinge designs are good, it depends on what type of slope you are looking for and what angle you are happy with. Also are you worried about having a gap under the platform that is visible? For me that was the main reason i did not go down that route, but a lot will depend on you look you want and what the rest of the station looks like.
  6. I have just been reading some old threads about the change of colour from grey to light bluish grey and the dark grey equivalent. All very interesting, but the in spite of there being much discussion about the pros and cons of the change and who liked what or was upset about it or perfectly happy to have both, (Of which there was an awful lot of pages of discussion!) nowhere in any of the threads did it answer the question I have been thinking about. (It has been one of those irritating things in the back of your mind you keep meaning to ask but always forget.) Anyway, the question is why did they decide to change the colour and why for the dark grey was it such a huge change whereas for the light grey (At least under artificial light.) it is hard to tell the difference? What made them do it when the old colours had been around for years and everyone was used to them?
  7. I have some handcuffs that came in an actual LEGO set I bought that do not have a logo on them so at least some do not. Cannot lay my hands on an axe right now but will try and find one later.
  8. I cannot recall specifics as I was only two years old when my parents bought me my first LEGO which would have been in 1970. I know my father enjoyed trains as he had a big layout (Not LEGO.) and I did end up with lots of blue 4.5V stuff, both push along and motorised. I recently have reused some of those old motors and taking them apart to clean them the date stamp on the actual motors are dated 1967 which is before I was actually born in 1968. I assume therefore that they are probably the oldest sets I have and they probably came with some of the old railway stuff of the 4.5V era.
  9. I like the idea for making long stretches of track and at different radius curves, I guess they can make them whatever they like? It would be a good idea for the garden true and I would love to have a garden set up as it is about the only place I have enough room for a really long run. But I think it would need some work to make it look more track like, perhaps painting it a steel or dark grey would help? I think I would also want more but thinner spacers to represent sleepers and make it look more real. However, I do love well the train runs around it and they seem to be getting up a good turn of speed on some of the track. It certainly is interesting to see what people come up with.
  10. Nice to see a terminus station. That Horizon Express looks a bit menacing there, as though it is going to punch right through into the sea opposite! Still a good build, but yes could do with covers to keep out the rain.
  11. Um, well that is a strange train really. But it is good to see people coming out with all sorts of odd stuff and it reminds us all that LEGO does not always have to be serious, it can be whatever we want to make it.
  12. Wonderful detail. I only wish I knew this much about technic stuff and NXT to be able to use it in my builds.
  13. I would say this is not an infringement myself as has been stated it is kind of an obvious design given that these existed in the 9v era and are essentially the same thing. Long before they appeared on Eurobricks I had planned to do something very similar to get one myself. (Still have not done it.) just maybe at a different angle. So it is not a unique idea, many people have had it. I think for fans of LEGO Railways this MOD is a bit like inventing the wheel, loads of people come up with a thing to represent something they all need / want using the same basic tools and parts. It is fairly obvious they are all going to look reasonably similar if not the same.
  14. This looks like a really good town model from ancient times. I bet it is fun to play out the little scenes that are going on there. I think I would have a great time playing with that using the scene as a base for a wargame or something, maybe the tribe from which those prisoners have been captured looking to rescue them and the soldiers having to defend the town. Maybe a traders boat pulls in from a far off land that have not known before and brings all his strange goods to trade. Perhaps some hostile boast come up to the shore there? Maybe some citizens from a neighboring town on their holidays are not so familiar with the offerings to be made in the temple and the locals get offended and hound them out of the city. So many possibilities there with such a great town. Well done with it, it offers many possibilities.
  15. I would really love a theme based around ancient Egypt where the ancient Egyptians were the good (Or at least neutral.) guys. Away from that though and getting around the skin color to a large degree if they had tribes people then they could be portrayed as wearing colored tribal masks that would go right over or even replace the heads, there would be no need for brown/black/yellow heads at all then. You could even set up two make believe tribes with conflict between them. They could be told apart by what sort of masks they wore, like castle is with shields. Probably would be good not to set it in the modern age though, but really it could be at some totally vague undefined point in the past. Also remember that the Sahara was not always a desert. Up to around 7000 years ago it was quite green and no doubt a lot more stuff happened there at that point with a wider range of tribes and animals. That could even be the theme, the change in climate and the tribes looking for dwindling resources?
  16. Is there any reason you cannot build a suspension bridge? OK, it would have to have the two towers, one at each end. You would need some cabling for which you would have (I guess, unless you can think of anything else?) to use some suitable string which may not be an option if you just want LEGO bricks, but I doubt anyone would be giving you too much of an issue about string! It would not have to be that big a tower if it only was 1.3m long, but I think the only issue would be having to attach the load bearing ropes onto the lead up on each side makeing your actual bridge structure 2.6m long even though half of it would be on land.
  17. I think for myself this is one that is my favourite LEGO train sets. It has a nice long'ish track from the outset and a good multipurpose diesel engine that can be used for many types of goods or even light passenger work. It also has a good selection of wagons. The green box car is a nice one because every freight railways needs those. The tipper wagon is by far not the best example of this type of thing but it works and goes well with the play feature. The track maintenance wagon is not something that i think many people would expect to get and probably will not be included in many trains, but again it gives a play feature adding an extra thing kids can, do taking up track and relaying it along with numerous other railway works. True the battery box is a bit of a pain to get them in a out but the rechargeable one is so expensive. I have quite a few normal battery boxes and they are all a little tight, but not too bad once you get used to it. I always take them out after I finish running the trains anyway. I'd love to get some of those rechargeable ones but they are out of my price range right now. I have however bought a raft of rechargable batteries to use.
  18. I was given a couple of these cards today at my local toy store, I think it is a great idea myself to reward customer loyalty.
  19. I have never taken part in an exhibition before but I have been asked to display some of my stuff in a local store, not just LEGO either as I have a large collection of wargaming models all painted up to a reasonable standard. I have always shied away from it though as 1: I am worried about sticky fingers. 2: I am not sure parents from what I have seen locally have that much control over their children. 3: I am not sure some parents have that much control of their own fingers and pockets! 4: I am always concerned that in a crowded constrained place there is a huge risk of accidental damage and who would want to pay for it? Certainly not the customers and probably not the store? 5: I am always a bit worried that lots of people will claim it is rubbish compared to their own and keep putting me down in public.6: whilst probably not so much of an issue with the wargaming stuff, but certainly with LEGO MOCs, no matter how good they are people at large would have a dim view of an adult male 'playing' as they would see it, with a kids toy and what sinister dark secret was I hiding and as such remarks would be made and fingers pointed. That is probably the biggest one actually. Whilst people close to me know I have always had LEGO ever since I was a kid and in fact I am trying to build accurate models (Especially trains.) and nothing untoward is going on at all.
  20. I don't know, I have now got most of the sets and have bought a couple of speedorz for bits and mini-figures, but to be honest although I like the sets, the speedorz I just can't get on with, I have tried a few times and just got frustrated. I tried to get the wife interested to have a game but found it too hard to pull her away from T.V. and her friends sets. One thing I would say is that the vehicles are all rather big, but they seem to consist of a lot of air if you know what I mean? Very Technic, large wheels or tracks at funny angles mounted on huge suspension. I'd like them to be perhaps a little more compact myself, but i still bought them.
  21. Yes I think so, even today at mini-figure scale they are useful to people making building MOCs. After all not everyone wants a huge window in the bathroom of a house or similar. Those little 1X1 windows are very useful for that sort of thing. I have a few of them now, but if only I could locate the box with the majority of my old bricks in it I would then have a mine of them and m,any other bits. I really must find a way to get into mother's attic or shed!
  22. This is for a roller coaster? How high is it going to go, and how will the cars get held onto the track when it goes upside down or at extreme angles? Do you have any of the structure in place yet? If so it would be good to see it. I imagine this will be an interesting project for us to follow and see how it developes.
  23. As people are saying not all Friends animals are bad, some are just as usefull in CITY sets, but this depends a lot on the nature of that set and the color of the animal in it.
  24. The CITY figures look good, the Grandad, Painter, Librarian, bike Mechanic, all of those I use in CITY MOCS. The others I will try to get one of at least for completeness but otherwise I am not bothered. So how rare is this gold figure, is there going to be one in each box or is it worse than that? It does not look like a really great figure to be honest and I think with a bit more effort they could have come up with something so much better. Still I feel the need to have one though other wise the set is not complete!
