  1. Actually, by moving the connection below the red tile it becomes less conspicuous. And I could hide another connection inside the nose so that the tip is now locked into position. Better?
  2. Ah yes, I agree. I need an angular plate here to hide the connection. I couldn't find a better way.
  3. Hi, Last year, I made some modifications to Pasq67's midi x-wing. You can find the original and some of my modifications here: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/158379-moc-x-wing-fighter-midi-scale/ However, I kept on modifying it and I now consider this MOC has evolved enough to have its own thread. Here are some pictures: For those who care: I increased the overall height (1 stud), and had to modify the nose as a result (I think the angles are much more accurate now). However, the extra height means the wings cannot be folded anymore. I completely revamped the canopy. I'm very happy with the lower part, but not so much with the upper part... I tried hard to keep transparent bricks, but there was just not enough room (even if there was a way, I think there would be a gap that would ruin the overall look, just like in my previous efforts). I'm not so sure about the torpedos. I have an alternate solution for them, but I may remove them completely. All the connections are legal(ish). All the bricks are common, and should be available from Pick a Brick and/or Bricks & Pieces. Brick count: 410 (without stand) The cross section is still wrong, but I think there is only so much that can be done at this scale. I'll let it rest for a while, and if I still like it when Bricks & Pieces is available again, I'll order the parts. Constructive criticism is welcome. Lemme know what you think!
  4. I have bought the bricks, so here are some pictures. I really like the look of it on my desk. For the scale, I think there are few compromises. Not what I would call compromises anyway, but your mileage may vary. Although you'd be hard pressed to find a group of more than four bricks that I didn't modify, it still owes an awful lot from Pasq67's version. The parts I am the most happy with are the wings (those smooth, studless cylinders took a lot of efforts).
  5. I'm running out of steam, so here is my latest file. Edit: Never mind, I have found a way.
  6. Thanks! My main gripe with B is that I cannot use a hollow cylinder at the front. And there is an exposed stud . That being said, I think it is an acceptable compromise. One last question (possibly); what is the best nose? C or D? From the side, I think the answer is obvious, but from the top nose C is slightly wider... What do you guys think?
  7. Thanks. I do have a LDD file (a lot of files really), but I'm reluctant to share before I check the design with real bricks. I plan to buy them next month though. But before I do, I could use some help. I have 4 different designs for the wings that I both like and dislike for different reasons. Could some of you tell me which one they prefer? A, B, C or D? None of them?
  8. This is my latest (and last) effort. I wanted to get rid of all the studs (except R2's head) and the square plates in the middle of the cylinders... But now I have managed it, I'm not sure it was worth it. I'll let this one rest and decide which features I'll build when I buy the bricks.
  9. I played with this MOC a bit. Well ok, a lot, because it is a great MOC. I modified the design in an attempt to make the scale more accurate. I made the following changes: engine cylinders (front parts) shorter rear engines longer nose (and I redesigned the side slopes) angles below the canopy (not perfect, but it's the best trade-off I could manage) rear of the main body much bigger wings to fit the scale the "pilot" is gone, unfortunately modified guns because I wanted them to be only one color (and I wanted to use cheap bricks ) edit: modified greeble on top (nothing wrong with the original, but they didn't fit with the continuous white lining I added) Not everything is attached in LDD, but should be in real life. The canopy is still linked the same way it was in the original. I made some tests with the bricks I have, there shouldn't be any issue. Here is a visual. What do you people think? Does any of this make it better or worse? Any suggestions?
  10. Ok thanks. I won't need it then. I modified your MOC a bit with LDD because I wanted to make the scale even more accurate... And while I was at it, I also modified this part of the engine (with 18674 / 15535 / 6143).
  11. Thanks for sharing! I will definitely build this (but I modified the engines a little). One question though... What is the outercable in the LDD file for?
  12. To my eyes, the best MOCs are as small as possible while retaining as much features and details as possible. What you did here is truly awesome. Is there any chance you will share instructions with us? I had vowed not to buy lego anymore, but I would definitely build this!
  13. I don't think anyone has been (or should be) offended. You used custom parts but you mentionned that fact clearly. What anyone thinks of it... well it is just a matter of personal preference. Personnally I won't use custom parts (too lazy to make them), but if I ever buy bricks again I'll probably borrow some ideas from your file to improve my own x-wing (the nose, the "engine slopes" and a certain detail at the back of the wings are especially nice). Anyway, it looks great. Thanks for sharing! P.S. And Tyutyu, since you're here, thank you for sharing your brick canopy earlier. It made me realize mine was one stud too high. It's much better now.
  14. Tempting, but come on... 800€! And it's too big. As far as I'm concerned, the most impressive models are the ones that are as small as possible while being the right scale. Maybe I should just mod my girlfriend's 75105 instead. By the way, I'll have to prevent her to get the new Falcon, not the other way around. Jealous, huh? Anyway, modding would be expensive but it would still be much less than 800€. My biggest issue with 75105 is the size of the mandibles.
  15. Very nice! I like the way you built the transition from the slopes to the cylinders. Is it your work or was it part of the original design? If you plan to update it, you may want to consider moving the slope under the cockpit toward the rear of the spacecraft. I think it would go a long way toward making it look even better (from the side, that is).
  16. Depending on what cehnot kept from my wing design, I may be to blame. To be fair, I did warn the whole thing was built for its good look as a priority. If you want to make them sturdier, you can : - replace the 3 small wedges (4 studs) at the rear by a single big one (12 studs). The angle is wrong though. - modify the red pattern (like Tyutyu did) - get rid of the gray plates underneath. They are the main reason the wings are flimsy. The way the engines are attached should also be improved (again, my fault). I wanted these gray half cylinders to show inside the engines, and couldn't find a better way. Cehnot, I can't wait to see the pictures of the real thing. I hope reality is kind with your build (it gave me a hard time with mine).
  17. @atlas: I think you're close to nailing the look of the canopy from the side. Unless lego can be bothered to make an accurate windscreen canopy, I keep thinking bricks are the way to go. However if I may, I'm not a fan of the canopy lower part (that gray wedge). Using a wedge as part of the canopy is a good idea though. I wonder if the trick that Inthert used in his first version could be used here (basically two overlapping wedges, one white and one gray, with the gray one slightly laterally offset). @cehnot: it seems I didn't voice my opinion on your toptic yet. It is very, very good. It could be my favourite x-wing so far. You really tried to make the proportions right, and you made a much better job of it than I did. Once it's finalized, I may take my x-wing apart in order to build yours (possibly with atlas' canopy). I would have liked the angle underneath the nose to be smooth, but it may not be worth the effort.
  18. As I said earlier, there are a lot of great x-wings out there these days. I wanted to improve mine before I made the ldd file public. But by the time I do it there will be so many superior versions it will be pointless. So I share the ldd file on the off chance some parts of this design help building another one. Next time I buy bricks, I'll try cehnot's upgrades (the landing gears at the very least). Or maybe I'll build another one entirely :-) http://bricksafe.com/files/Gray_Mouser/GM_T65_v1.1.lxf
  19. Sounds familiar :-) These are great improvements. I saw your x-wing too... It's so good I don't think I'll ever need to improve my version again. I mean, the scale is right, and there are many nice details. I might as well work from your version. And I know for a fact that at least one more x-wing is coming (a great one, you'll see). Inthert published instructions for his stunning v2 too. It makes me wonder... If we all worked together on the same xwing, dividing the whole project into smaller tasks, I think we could really nail it.
  20. You'll find a series of pictures of the final version here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskH13nM3 I'm happy to report that I've been much too cautious when I said it shouldn't be swooshed. Don't grab it by the nose and you should be fine (the center of gravity is near the bulge behind the pilot anyway, so it would be a bad idea regardless of the sturdiness of the model). And I prove it: Those who asked for the files should have received them. Since I've fixed the issues that annoyed me the most, I'm not sure at all I'll work on this again. It's been a time sink and it wasn't exactly cheap either (but you probably guessed that). Gray Mouser, out!
  21. I see. I've learned something new :-) No problem. As I said, honest feedback is appreciated. I'd be curious to know if more people prefer brick canopies or glass canopies. It seems there is no general consensus on this matter. For instance, Inthert and All in the Reflexes used bricks, while Psiaki and dmaclego used the lego glass ones. I for one stand by the choice to make the canopy out of bricks. Now if only lego could be bothered to make one whose shape is accurate, it could be different. I mean, come on, the last one is larger at the front than at the rear... What were they thinking? But the shafts do look too thick, I agree. I got rid of the shafts with cored knob (92690) in mine though. I daresay it looks better now, but I don't think it'll be enough to convince you :-)
  22. I'm afraid I don't understand... Roundabouts? Swings? Are they nicknames for some parts? I'd really be grateful if you could explain, honest feedback is really appreciated!
  23. There seems to be very little interest for the LDD file and for the instructions. I don't blame you, there are plenty of great xwing MOCs out there. But for this reason, it seems like a waste of time to polish the instructions like I had intended to. I'm a man of my word though. I have updated the LDD file, and made some comments on the old instructions. The instructions are outdated, but they should still help. The LDD file should be enough though (I'll make sure the bricks are grouped correctly). I'll send a private message with a temporary link to the files to those of you who did express interest. Since last time I also did the following: - the front landing gear is back (but not retractable) - the wheel I used as greebling on top of the spacecraft is now attached solidly - the transition between the canopy and the fuselage is much smoother I'll try to make pictures tomorrow.
  24. Ok, this time I am done with version 1.0. I have applied the patch I mentioned before, I brought back the targetting computer, and I am pleased to report that the result could be considered as mildly swooshable (but I'd advised against it). Actually, the xwing fell off a makeshift stand, nose first, and the only damage was that the rods of the lower guns detached. And the wings, which were deployed, closed. For the next version (which is a long way away), I'll try to fix the following issues: - the cone wheel I used as greebling on the top is very loosely attached on the plate below it. I dunno if the wheel I got is faulty, or if it is normal. I'll try to find something else. - the front landing gear is gone, I'll make a removable one. I have ideas, but I just don't have the bricks. For now the xwing will stay on its stand. That's the way I like it anyway, with its wings deployed. - I don't like the transition from the canopy to the nose fuselage. It should be smooth. I'm not sure it can be done without serious modifications - I'm not happy with the interior of the engines (the white shows through the turbine) - sturdiness issues (there are modifications I could apply right away, but I don't have the bricks) - the gun cross sections should be circular, not square - the nose should stay up by itself. The solution I used almost seems like cheating Overall, I must say I'm very happy with the current result though. I'll make a final series of pictures next week end when the light is good. Finally, I'll modify the instructions because the previous version is a bit embarassing really. I don't think I'll make them public though. The next versions could be a very long way off though. However if you are interested, I'll send the instructions and the LDD file to you if you promise not to share them. The point is that I'll release them to everyone when I'm done for good. Be aware that it is challenging to build though. So don't hesitate to make yourself known here, because when I'm gone (probably in a couple of weeks), I dunno when I'll return. If you could make comments on what you like, and more importantly what you dislike, it would be even better.
  25. Thank you. But trust me, you wouldn't want to build it as it is now. I may have a solution though. I don't like it much, but it gets the job done. I have stuck a minifig back plate in the gap due to the upward tilted nose. No way it can come down now. I have also added a 1x1 plate with tooth to prevent the top of the nose to tilt upward. It almost feel sturdy now. The retractable landing gear is gone for good though. But I'm confident a removable one can be done. Here is a picture (the plate with tooth is yellow, it can be seen from a gap on the right). What do you guys think?
