  1. Was cleaning my office (I'm an older adult) and in the back of a closet I found a forgotten bucket (those great collector buckets shaped like a Lego piece) filled to the top with Legos, including the instruction booklets. Looks like they're all from about the mid-1980's. This is going to be a fun afternoon!
  2. If it's truly for the baby I agree. If it's for YOU however, I say enjoy doing what you want to do. As long as you're not paying with your rent money have a great time.
  3. Just had this conversation at work: Passer-by: What are you reading? A Hello Kitty forum? Me: NO! It's Legos! I think that ends up being about 4% better than just saying Yes.
  4. Speculation like this is interesting, especially with niche markets. It's easy to overestimate the sales value of a market like Lego Train users when reading a forum OF Lego Train users. I wonder if sales of specialty sets like the Emerald Night and Maersk are anything compared to casual Lego City users deciding to try out the Cargo or Passenger sets. As a company it's probably tough to balance pleasing the small, hardcore crowd while at the same time not wasting too many resources on what is likely a small financial segment for them.
  5. I can't take it any more. Ordering this. I just returned to Lego trains (don't even have a track set up) but it will break my heart if this goes out of production before I grab one. At least I can probably wait until my layout is set up for the Maersk.
  6. At the same time there are very few other toys with the longevity of Legos. While most toys may have a lifespan of years Legos are decades+. I have several "public" tubs of Legos in my house that contain pieces from thirty or more years ago. In fact, my brother posted a picture from his 1974 5th birthday where he is assembling a Tractor which might very well have some pieces in one of my bins.
  7. You kids with your fancy gizmos and mechanical pieces! Back in MY day all we had were rectangles! AND WE LIKED IT!
  8. What a gorgeous engine. Can't wait to see the brick version.
  9. Like Colorforms. Clever idea!
  10. Is the first one in color? The B&W photos on the cover make it look like it's B&W. That looks like a fascinating book to own. I can think of a few family members I'd like to buy it for.
  11. I am an older builder just jumping back in after a long absence. Growing up I had two rails of Lego track (the blue plastic ones) and always wanted more. Looking back on it I am amazed how many adventures my brothers and I made with just two track rails for all those years. How did I never manage to get any more? I guess when it came to the very rare opportunity to be buying bricks we always chose more traditional sets. Now that I'm older (older is not adequate... How about older++?) I am enjoying purchasing what I want. Now my only limit is time. Hopefully plenty of that in my future. Legos were a big part of my youth. I am enjoying my time getting reacquainted with them.
  12. These are great. It is exciting for me to know that there are people who look at something and see "what COULD be" instead of just seeing what's there. I bought that set (just one, not EIGHT!) for my daughter and it never even dawned on me to make them bigger.
  13. A quick explanation: Most (all?) Lego stores have an area with random blocks/pieces and allow you to fill a cup with pieces and you buy it by the cup. I didn't know aboutbit when I went. :( EDIT: oops, I misread the question, sorry.
  14. When you see a real-world train and refer to it by the set number.
  15. Kinda funny what a difference the mini-figs in a picture make to me. Brings the scene to life, as silly as they may seem.
  16. For what it's worth I have seen plenty of less-than-glowing reviews. Perhaps anything negative goes through another layer of management analysis by default but just takes a bit longer to post. I know for a fact I've been shocked by a few comments in reviews.
  17. What a great contest! And the entries so far are a great deal of fun to view. Great community here. I am enjoying my stay.
  18. Oh man, I wish we had had digital cameras when I was a kid. No pics but my favorite successful projects were: The Robot from the Lost in Space TV series (I'm old) The Ark II from the old Saturday Morning TV series (1970s?) Thunderbird II from the Marionette TV series Every Star Wars ship imaginable (we lived overseas and didn't getbthe toys until several years after the movie came out)
  19. I just went to the Santa Clara Lego Store on my lunch break (I'm working today). Was very impressed by the inventory, bought a Winnie the Pooh set for my daughter. The store was packed and it made me smile when an adult bought a large kit and the clerk said "Oh, they are gonna LOVE this!" and he replied (very cheerily) "it's for me." The Clerks were friendly and seemed to be having fun. Unfortunately they didnt have the set I actually went there to buy. Will order it online.
  20. Hi all, I recently purchased some items from Lego.com. Pretty amazing how reasonable their prices are compared to Amazon and ToysRUs. I requested a VIP card and am eagerly awaiting it but have decided to make another large purchase. Do i have to wait for the card to arrive or will my purchases count retroactively? I am dying to purchase it but it's a big kit so I want the double VIP points. Torture!
  21. Oops, I was unclear. I meant the "88002 or 8866? What's the difference?" thread http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=52597 In a reply Tearloch33 states Thanks for the clarification.
  22. Greetings. This is my first post here so I will start with the usual "sorry if this has been discussed before.". I searched here and with Google but could not find an answer. On the Lego website the 7938 motor is described as "train motor" while the 7939 description lists It as "medium motor". Are these the same motor or is the 7939 stronger? I will be using the set for my own train project (I am new to Lego trains) so the train design is a non- issue. I would prefer the cheaper set but would gladly pay more if the motor is more powerful. By the way, this has been fantastic perusing this forum. So nice to see calm, sensible discussion on a forum. And so much information to soak in! EDIT: Oh dear. Found the answer a few posts down in the motor comparison thread. Thanks again for the great resource this forum is. Question answered and this topic can certainly be closed if need be. Thank you.
