42056 - Porsche Speculation

The 5 times was a reference to a joke Jeremy Clarkson once made about BMW / Audi drivers...and I introduced BL to put things in perspective Edit : Nice photo of the 8880 supercar, where has it been taken ? The rear wheel steering is absolutely minute on the real car if we backtrack a few pages back within this topic ;) And here's for some more nonsense from Porsche : let me introduce the Porsche designed smoking pipe -

Nmapladem has made a reproduction of the Porsche gearbox demonstrating on the probable issue on this set (original topic on techlug : http://www.techlug.f...c10092-930.html ) https://www.youtube....h?v=c2H6z42a8vk https://www.youtube....h?v=iVtnn3vpyXc In short : you need to apply some downforce on the back of the chassis for the transmission to work properly (like the real car though ) Edit : on the designer video, the "mode selector" appears to be pushed all the way forward too and the car do seem to roll perfectly... -

Technically speaking, each molded part is fairly cheap...add the Lego brand on it and it costs 5 times as much as the same unbranded part...and then, you'll try to buy some white flex axle of some random very rare length...some BL shops do charge for as much as 15€ for one of those in so called "new" condition...and then again try to buy a "new" rim of the 599 set that was released a few years back...and you'll find a single set of rim can cost up to $150...the Porsche IP is no match for the "used" Ferrari IP -

As a petrolhead, I tend to prefer cars to machinery and yeah, most cars are just chassis + vanity part on top of it to make it pretty / aggressive / look like a fish (nope, that's the ugliest concept from Mercedes )...furthermore, I tend to build most of the "vanity" part during my lunch break (given the fact I work 5 minutes from home) and concentrate on technic stuff by night For 42039, it's not that interesting to build, it has too few functions...the doors, the hinged front boot (that shouldn't be there), the hinged rear hood and a "working" engine with no proper gearbox driven by the rear wheels...as it's fairly cheap, I can have one sitting on my desk at work without bothering too much -

Personal taste And this is the only version of 8880 that can be called "too bricky" : Edit : the human scale model still exists Edit 2 : build that one and you'll never complain of the price of any set / MOC anytime soon -

It hasn't got all wheel drive and I find it less complex (but more modular) than 8880...and I hate the use of flex axle to define the shape of the bodywork (but that's a personnal opinion) -

In that case, 8880 still best most of the Technic sets of the past 20 years (and each and every "supercar" released since then)...and remember that some MOC make heavy use of "non standard build techniques"...and highly detailed MOC such as Pvdb's Koenigsegg are sort of "money no object" projects ! -

According to Anio on the french forum techlug : the gearbox seems to be 4D + N + 4R the shifting mechanism shows some flaws on occasion...I had some issue on that too with Pvdb's Koenigsegg One:1 - so did Rikus for that matter - but that was a fairly easy fix (but not an obvious one)...I tend to think those kinds of problems are fundamentally inherent to the design of the linkage of most lego paddleshift gearboxes...assembled properly, they work absolutely fine...but slightly missallign something and nothing works as it should. the rubberbands do interfere with the handling of the paddleshift...but that one was to be expected Furthermore, to me, it seems like Anio is comparing the Porsche to some of the best MOC out there (such as Nathanaël's Predator). Therefore, I understand he could have hoped a lot more from TLC...which in this case seems to have been defeated by some random - very gifted - dude working all night round, alone in his shed (sorry for the cliché) Edit : on techlug some might have well have found what Anio is not allowed to tell us : the car is rolling properly but only in neutral...on the other hand, AutoBild shows the car rolling properly...and definitely not in neutral as the "mode selector" is definitely pushed all the way forward. -
Here's what to expect from some knock off :D

The Porsche IP is not cheap...2700 technic parts are not cheap...and the real retail price of this set is not 300€. I can get it on august 1st for 275€ from my local lego-certified store...in fact, I can pre-order it for that price right now...but I won't be doing that and order it directly from lego...because...well... -

It's a car. The bodywork is expected to be made with quite a lot of parts. On Pvdb's Koenigsegg, the doors alone are made of around 50 non-functional parts...and on the 3000+ parts of this MOC, most of them are just plain bodywork. Is this MOC disapointing ? Certainly not ! Again it's a car and it's expected to have quite a bit of bodywork parts. And don't forget that what are now called steps were formerly sub-steps of many sub-assemblies, which is not the case anymore. -

Or either some reviewers or some lego designers were going one beer too far during a late nite build -

(Let the guesswork begins) Gearbox then (likely)...or maybe some loose drivetrain attachement (unlikely) -

@nguyengiangoc Apple didn't cancel the iPhone 4 for the "antenna gate", nor some androïd (for good measure) did cancel their flagship due to some bending issues similar to the ones found on the iPhone 6 plus. In a few months, we will receive a free "bumper" -

From the AutoBild videos, I can't see anything wrong. Assembly seems to be pretty straightforward and the functions seems to work fine...even though it seems we have 4 speeds in each direction Edit : the only thing that might cause some sort of trouble is the roof, which has quite a big overhang and not that much support...but as this model is not intended for kids, and again, I can't see anything wrong with that. -

Due to some missing parts stuck somewhere in the french postal "service" due to illegal strikes...if this set arrives at the same time as the last parts of the Pvdb's Koenigsegg One:1 I'm not sure of which to build first...most of the Koenigsegg parts are already pre-assembled though -

This might stay exclusive to the porsche since the 901 is a clear reference to the 911 type 901. -
[MOC] Koenigsegg One:1
charlesw replied to Pvdb's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's not an issue to me. In the future, I may swap those for softer ones, but I'm not quite sure it will make any difference at all. Furthermore, I may also swap some of the gearbox components by the new ones only found in 42056, to lessen the actuation force required and make them a tad smoother.- 229 replies

Defining a Supercar
charlesw replied to deehtha's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Blakbird The Mega Track on which was (loosely) based 8880* was not really a proper supercar...it was a strange mix between a supercar and an all terrain vehicle. Look closely at it and you'll find parts from Mercedes, Audi, Peugeot and other cars from Mega's lineup...which are by no mean supercar-ish (quite the opposite in fact). => http://www.turbo.fr/...02-06-2013.html (in french) * apart from the V12 being replaced by a V8 and the 2 so called "back seats" and hard-to-reproduce citroën-ish suspension with at least 3 ride height track / road / all terrain -

charlesw replied to Pvdb's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Is that what you meant ? I mean, the front wheel seems to sit fairly low (under the base of the chassis) as the front shocks are very compressed...but at step 69, this weight only 430g, which is nowhere near the weight of the completed assembly. Note : so far I'm missing only 4 parts belonging to the rear suspension...those are stuck somewhere due to ongoing strikes somewhere in france...joy oh joy...- 229 replies
