    Ha! Just came across this while watching Poirot on the TV in the background Great work. I was just thinking about building his beautiful apartment building in Lego (at least in LDD) as a stay at home project.

    I have the unbuilt 42078 right beside me, i am seriously contemplating jumping straight to this version. Excellent work, i think this is one of the best C-model ideas i've seen around here.

    Coal is probably on the way out, yes, but iron ore, copper and gold mines are here to stay for a very long time.

    In the "Future set wishes and speculation" i wrote this back in 2016 Guess i'm getting my wish fulfilled and honestly i couldn't be happier. A 7motor machine far exceeds my expectations, this is well within MOC territory. I'm guessing one of the more popular mods to this will be switching it from a mining shovel to an excavator since the real life model offers both options (backhoe attachment or face shovel attachment).

    This is way, way beyond what i tried to do I guess modelling separate components could be possible. Otherwise ldd would certainly crash. Or bluerender would crash. Something certainly would.

    Those used in opencast mining can dig both below and above grade Not only that, but you don't need to rotate the buckets depending on how you're digging, like is sometimes the case with BWE's.

    closest you can get to the real thing with this solution. Just like with the 42055 bwe, the bucket discharge is not exactly similar to real life operations, but a decent trade-off. I'm guessing you will need a deflector plate to keep the load from discharging onto the buckets below and probably jamming the machine. The clamshell bucket is, i think, the most realistic approach so far.

    The bucket itself has no moving parts. The buckets are emptied when they go around the drive sprocket inside the excavator body. The material falls off the back of the bucket, into a chute and then onto conveyors or into railcars. The geometry of the bucket ensures that the material stays inside the bucket until it goes around the sprocket.     whenever i contemplated the idea of a bucket chain excavator i ended up thinking that using 3d printed buckets and maybe custom chain link parts where the buckets are attached are necessary.

    The most advanced excavators of this kind were built by germans and used in open pit mining. Some of them run on rail tracks, that can offer some interesting possibilities. On some models, the excavated material was loaded directly into trains running under the main body of the excavator. Larger models have the digging arm divided into sections, each of them suspended with pulleys. This allows variations in the excavation profile. Large bucket chain excavators work alongside BWEs and even in giant complexes that include an overburden conveyor bridge (giant machines as big as the eiffel tower laid on a side). Have you decided on a solution for the chain itself and for fixing the buckets to it?

    "Is it worth it?" i'd definitely say yes, then again, my love of giant industrial machinery might be a bit of a bias. It is a long build (not extremely difficult, just long) but the model really grows in a great way.

    I'm back question: is it possible to set the motor RPM via the sbrick app such as to eliminate the need to build a reduction gear? 'cause if so, i'm considering switching all the control system to sbrick question2: is there a limit to what bluerender can take until it tells you to leave it alone? Happy spring everyone!

    Out of what i have overall complexity and build experience + set theme: BWE playability: Volvo 350 LF looks: Xerion, hands down 42009 is also close to my heart since it is the first flagship set i ever got, after girlfriend opened Pandora's box with the 42028 dozer probably thinking "how could this ever go overboard?"
