  1. The unicorn, dogs, and parrot are all super cute!
  2. I'm thinking I'll wait—since I'm doing an online order tonight instead of planning a store trip tomorrow, my priority is the new Monkie Kid sets (since those are no longer available in-store where I live, and thus won't be eligible for any future in-store discounts or anything). So other big-ticket items can wait for a future in-store discount or GWP. Obviously your mileage may vary based on your taste in themes and how many high-dollar items are on your wishlist to take advantage of other future GWPs. If the rumored Pizza Van is real, a part of me hopes it'll take some inspiration from one of my classic sets, Pizza-to-Go (though obviously I'm hoping for something a little bigger and more refined to go with the modular).
  3. I wouldn't read too much into the thematic connotations of codenames since the whole point of codenames in the first place is to obfuscate the contents.
  4. Ooh, neat! I think that ring piece is bigger than the one that came in Friends a few years ago? It's in some new colors, at least. New Rocket Racer fig and bike as well!
  5. I'd also like to see how the printed back looks with airtanks. That said, one nice thing about the airtanks is they'll probably make it easier to display new and old figs together (with the new one being particularly useful if you want to have a fig without airtanks for whatever reason). The dark grey panel in the cargo hold stood out to me as well, considering I think dark grey bricks were rare in the era of the original set. Then again, maybe that makes for a small coincidental benefit from the stickers—if you want a more authentic look you could easily use the same sticker on a black piece instead. By the way, picked up the Astronaut and Spacebaby CMF today! Will have to see about using some of my spare parts to see if I can make a cradle/bassinet based on the little beds from the Galaxy Explorer.
  6. Was able to find the new series up front at Target (Virginia, USA)! Picked up the essential Falconer and Astronaut/Spacebaby, as well as the Potter.
  7. Believe me, I considered that idea knowing that it would be a challenge and that no previous buildable action figure system (Bionicle/Galidor/Hero Factory/Star Wars) would really be sufficient for it. But I still think it would be an interesting extension of Lego into a market that they haven't previously mastered, if they could get it right somehow.
  8. I think it's not at all unlikely that the Azure Lion will get some sort of mech/vehicle in the summer. It's rather customary for the summer sets to have the same villain faction as the previous one, at least for some of the sets. It's pretty reasonable to assume that that might include a mech/vehicle for the only major demon in the trio without one of his own yet. Beyond just his overall intimidation factor, the Azure Lion also has his right arm seemingly surrounded in ink (the arm is black and on that side of his torso you can see the purple/black ooze shared with the ink demons encroaching on the rest of his body). This is reason enough to believe that either he's using the Ink Demons or they're using him.
  9. Brickset has their review up! The back printing on the astronaut figure is a nice surprise!
  10. Hard to say... the ones we've already gotten are very good! Seals would be interesting. Whales, walruses or orcas too. But even if they gave us new types of existing animals it'd be great—imagine how cute polar bear cubs to go with the existing polar bears would be!
  11. Attic explorer? Sounds like the perfect AFOL theme then—maybe it'll help them find some of their childhood sets up there! In all seriousness, if the arctic rumors are true, maybe they'll make some use of some of the new molds from the new Super Mario snow levels. The cracked ice tile could potentially allow for some nice surface detail for the explorers to traverse, and the small BURP/iceberg piece could be just as useful as its larger forbears. EDIT: Just realized this was the animals topic and not the City topic... hopefully my speculation about non-animal topics isn't too distracting.
  12. I'm particularly fond of the droid update, replacing the old (long retired) control yoke piece with the gun handle piece from the Overwatch sets. It's a much more versatile piece and evokes the hunched posture of the droid from the original set very effectively!
  13. Personally I don't particularly see the appeal of non-Lego fashion dolls of Lego characters... Then again I'm quite outside the target market for fashion dolls in general. That said, one thing I've thought would be interesting for a while would be if Lego made an attempt to create a system for buildable fashion dolls, sort of like the buildable action figure sets they've done successfully with themes like Bionicle and Hero Factory. I think it would largely need a different sort of system since fashion dolls require different sort of shapes (more streamlined and organic, less futuristic/aggressive) and you'd likely want important details on the outfits to be assembled, rather than just being a pre-formed "shell". I would've been especially interested in sets like that if it happened when the Elves theme were still going, and I could get some of those sorts of fantastical characters in a larger, more displayable form. Nowadays I'm not totally sure the idea of a fashion doll line would suit the new direction of the Friends theme... but it could've been cool.
  14. If true, the Perseverance rover has the potential to be quite an interesting set (especially if it includes the Ingenuity drone as well). I'm all for unconventional subject matter in Technic and space-related technology has generally been quite rare over the theme's history.
  15. I got the Mighty Bowser set for Christmas yesterday! Just finished building it today—what a satisfying building experience. I would expect a character like Luma that's iconic to Galaxy specifically to be released in a set or wave of sets alongside other characters from that game like Rosalina, maybe even (if we're lucky) in a set based on a Galaxy location like the Comet Observatory. I don't really feel like they'd be ideally suited to a character pack—especially since I'm not sure what interaction they ought to have other than a generic "friendly" interaction like Toads. Speaking of Toads and Galaxy, I think the recolors we've gotten so far do mean we can build almost the whole Toad Brigade apart from Captain Toad himself!
  16. Currently my plan is to maybe order the Monkie Kid sets on the first to get the Blacktron GWP, and then buy the Ninjago sets on my wishlist later in the month when the Bionicle GWP is released. I do miss being able to pick up Monkie Kid sets in the stores, but given that there are multiple GWPs I want next month anyway, I'm not going to stress about having to make multiple types of purchases.
  17. Honestly I'd rather the non-licensed modulars refrain from referencing any "real world" IP. The comic shop in the Ninjago City set had a better approach, with references to past Lego themes as well as some more generic sorts of sci-fi memorabilia.
  18. Vidiyo might not be the best example to make your case, as a theme with an incredibly high price-per-piece compared to many others. Printing was not necessarily cheaper for Vidiyo than it would be for any other theme—those costs were passed on to the consumer and could have been a contributing factor into why that theme flopped so dramatically. The cost of a printed piece often has more to do with inventory management than actual manufacturing cost alone. All manufactured parts need to be produced and stored separately, including distinct prints. Sticker sheets are cheap and easy to store and a single sheet can easily add patterns to 30 or so different parts, compared to having to print and maintain inventory for all of those. On some sets that can have as many distinct stickers as the number of new recolors/prints they introduce, printing instead of stickering could easily double or even triple the logistical costs involved for that individual set.
  19. It was used for the palm tree in this year's Boutique Hotel, but dark tan will be a much more naturalistic color for the trunk than the gold used in that set: This set used a rigid minifigure lance to stack the crown pieces, but you could also use 3.2mm flex cable (like used in many Technic sets) to make the trunk longer and give it more of a natural arc.
  20. Charging Chuck would be awesome! Fishbone too though I'm not sure how you'd best achieve that skeletal shape and still have room for a scannable tile. Another enemy I'd like to see (especially now that we have more snow levels) is a Snow Pokey. And a Snow Spike, for that matter. A lot of the more traditional/recurring enemy types have been covered, but there are still many that haven't—especially when you get into enemies that have only been in a couple games. In more recent games, there's a lot of 3D Land/3D World enemies in particular that have yet to be made in Lego. There's also a lot of enemies that belong mainly to particular spinoffs/subseries, like enemies largely from the Yoshi's Island or Super Mario Galaxy games, and many variants of enemies that have been made (like the bright red Bulls-Eye Bills or Para-bones as well as bigger versions of enemies like Cheep Cheeps or Fuzzies). I'd also love to see some more large boss characters, especially Gooper Blooper and Petey Piranha (two of the bosses from Sunshine who have gone on to appear relatively frequently in some of the spin-off games).
  21. Whether or not production itself preceded the orders doesn't invalidate the point that a limited production window would still have to be scheduled in advance, so as not to disrupt the already packed and micro-managed production schedule for other sets and themes. When I went on a factory tour several years ago they discussed this, and I believe I've seen it discussed by designers of other limited edition or exclusive items (since those teams have much less sway when it comes to jockeying for limited time on a packed production line). Again, though, even if there are limits that's not to say the limits themselves can't change in the future. The Lego Ideas program itself was once much smaller and more niche than it is now, with more limited initial production numbers. If this program proves that it can consistently hit its allocated limits faster than expected, those limits have a decent chance of being raised in the future.
  22. It looks like the dried flowers are mounted to a frame of sorts that can be either laid flat or mounted on a wall. Looks like multiple copies can be combined into a larger arrangement, too. Not related to the new sets but I've picked up copies of the Bouquet and Orchids for some of my aunts and uncles. One of them is an avid gardener and the other has several real-life orchids so I hope they enjoy these gifts even though neither are really Lego builders/collectors!
  23. Personally I don't totally mind when a repeat character appears in the character packs, especially a rarer one like Blooper, Bramball or the Cat Goombas. Most "real" Mario levels tend to have a lot of multiples of the same enemy, so being able to populate a level with a bunch of similar enemies helps to maintain a coherent theme. Parts-wise, Bramball is also so far the only character who has had that thorny vine piece, which could be useful in other sorts of MOCs. On the note of "repeat" enemies, a part of me hopes that the Biddybud/Para-Biddybud appears in more colors in the future. In the games it originates from, it often tends to appear in groups of multiple colors, so perhaps a future character pack could have a pair of differently colored Biddybuds (maybe yellow and blue) like the two Cat Goombas in this pack. One nice thing about the character packs getting larger is that not only can larger characters like Spike and Sumo Bro be included now, but multiple smaller enemies can be packaged together too!
  24. I feel like this misunderstands how Lego operates a bit—they don't just have infinite production capacity available for something new and experimental like this. Lego's factories are run at pretty much maximum capacity and the amount of production any given theme is allocated is highly regulated based on expected demand. Lego couldn't just shove other, more widely produced and distributed themes and sets that had been scheduled for production for months aside if the demand for this ran well in excess of expectations. Having to slot excess production into an already packed schedule would require massive, unacceptable delays in the fulfillment of orders. Because of how popular the previous iterations of the Bricklink Designer program have been, there's a good chance that the next "phase" of it will have the order limit increased to help compensate for it. But that will have to have been a decision made well in advance of the opening of orders, not a decision made on the fly if it turns out to sell out too quickly again.
  25. Oh, sure—but I feel like relying mainly on new prints to suggest the "function" of a business might run a bit counter to the spirit of the modulars (and a print like a broken watch printed on a desk might have limited potential for reuse). If you made them a watch AND clockmaker, you could still have a new printed watch face tile or something along those lines on the desk but also fill some of the space in the workshop with larger brick-built clocks like a grandfather clock or cuckoo clock, along with builds of other essential features like a workbench and tools.
