Someone made a 2x2 technic pin, I found it on Reddit. It's pretty cursed lol.- 5,512 replies

Guys, a winner is found! I finally found an arrangement that makes the 42215 playble. I define playable as having the arm move at decent speed with decent torque. And the solution is just one extra L motor. I actually did try hard-coupled motors in my previous iteration, but because I put a linear clutch in the transmission for the base LAs, they don't work reliably. Fortunately @gyenesvi pointed it out. I removed it and the whole thing works flawlessly. Honestly at 430$ this is what should have been sold in the beginning. Demonstration.

You were right. I rebuilt the 42215 gearbox with two hard-coupled motors, this time without the linear clutch to the base LAs. The two motors showed sufficient torque to lift the arm at playable speed.- 5,512 replies

Guess what a shocking discovery I just made. Lego no longer offers instructions for Technic B models, even for past models. I just looked up instructions for a couple of sets (8043, 42043, 42009), and only instructions of A models are listed. Try it yourself: https://www.lego.com/en-my/service/building-instructions/42009 -
Here's the demonstration. The transmission can always be modified for more torque through some gear swaps, but that would come at the expense of speed, which is what I'd rather avoid. The setup I used in the video is a careful balance between acceptable speed and sufficient torque for bucket coupling/decoupling. I haven't tested, but I don't think there's enough torque to play digging.

I'll remove the linear clutch and test 1 motor vs 2 hard coupled motors.- 5,512 replies

That sounds reasonable. I'll try the hard coupled motors with no linear clutch to see how they perform then.- 5,512 replies

Not really, for some reasons the internal clutch of XL LAs didn't click at all. In the set up with one motor and no linear clutch, there is not enough torque so the gears would skip instead. I don't know if the XL LAs dont have internal clutch or not.- 5,512 replies

I added a linear clutch on the transmission to the base LAs. If the clutch clicks, the torque to lift the base LAs is inadequate. Left side is original transmission, right side is the transmission with a linear clutch. The linear clutch must be moved to the middle to avoid collision with the arm. My expectation was that the hard coupled motors should not struggle to lift the boom, which means no clicking when lifting the arm. The result is that the hardcoupled motors resulted in less clicking than a single motor, but they still resulted in clicking.- 5,512 replies

I think so too but when I hard coupled two L PU motors for the 42215 they perform barely better than one motor, so Idk- 5,512 replies

That's what Im looking for, thanks a lot! On another note, can it be proven that two hard coupled identical motors provide more torque, preferable twice, than one motor?- 5,512 replies
