[MOC] Technic B-25 Mitchell WIP
apemax replied to apemax's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
LAs are a good idea for the actual control surfaces. Thanks. I also need a better design for the joystick mechanism in the cockpit as I want it to be more like the real thing. -
Hey all. Well I finally started work on my next Technic aircraft, A B-25 Mitchell. It's going to be a similar size to my Technic Spitfire and mostly the same type of functions. The planned functions I have at the moment are: Both engines powered by a PF XL motor each. Working ailerons, elevator and rudder all controlled from the cockpit. Working Landing gear powered by a PF M motor. Working Landing flaps also powered by a PF M motor. Working turrets. I've so far built part of the left engine bay with the landing gear leg and the basic structure of the center of the main fuselage. First a couple of pictures of the engine bay: Next up is the section of main fuselage I've built so far: I am going to need a better control system for the control surfaces as the design I used in my Spitfire won't really work with this scale very well so if anyone has any suggestions on that front I would be very grateful. I'm not sure how long this MOC is going to take as I don't currently have all the pieces needed and affording them is going to be interesting to say the least but I will try and finish it before the end of the year hopefully.

[MOC] Technic Spitfire
apemax replied to apemax's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks. The Spitfire is one of my favourite aircraft as well hence I decided to build it. The next aircraft I'm going to build is going to be a North American B-25 Mitchell. Similar overall size to my Spitfire, maybe a bit bigger. It's going to take a while though as I'm going to need to buy quite a few more pieces for it so when it gets finished depends on when I can afford all the pieces. -

Thanks, Yeah I noticed that from the last time I bought some. For one of the models I want to make I'm probably going to need quite a few more... Thanks. Yeah that was a bit of handy timing. -

Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. I actually don't own the 8880 set. (Unfortunately, man thats a awesome model.) Most of the parts I bought from Bricklink. A lot of them specifically for this MOC. Thanks. Always wanted to make aircraft. This is hopefully only the beginning, I have a few more aircraft I want to make when I have enough pieces. -

Thank you very much. Thanks. Thanks. I put a lot of effort into getting the shape just right so I'm glad it worked out in the end. Thanks. I actually based it off of a model of a Spitfire I have. Thanks. Yeah I would imagine that would hrun a bit although surprisingly enough I haven't tested that. Thanks. -
Well it's been just over six months but I've finally finished my Technic Spitfire. This has been one of the largest and most time consuming builds I've done and I'm glad I've finally finished it to be honest. First a bit of info about it: Wingspan: 90cm length: 86cm Propeller diameter: 29cm Functions: Motorised Engine and Propeller. Motorised Landing Gear. Working Rudder, Elevator, and ailerons controlled from the cockpit. Now we move on to the pictures. First up a few different view of it overall. Next up a close up of all the functions and interesting bits. A close up of the propeller so you can see the design a bit better. I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. A close up of the engine and XL motor that drives the engine and propeller. The final gear ratio is 5.001:1. The left side is for the ailerons and the right side is the landing gear. Close up of the M motor that powers the landing gear. Close up of the control surface control system. The tail section. This was a bit of a pain to get right. The rear of the tail section. The original way I did this was with gears but that made the Elevators way to loose so I came up with this instead. A close up of the landing gear down. A close up of inside the Cockpit. A view from the cockpit as if you where sitting in it. Next up a couple of pictures with the landing gear up. Finally a video of all the functions. And thats it. I hope you like it.

[JFAIR] Spitfire (WIP)
apemax replied to apemax's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks. Thanks. Yep always been a fan of the Spitfire. Hence I decided it was going to be my first big aeroplane build. Thanks. No offence taken. :) It's been sat there for three months now and I haven't gotten round to giving my LEGO collection a proper clean yet. That and everything gets really dusty in my house really quickly, It's quite annoying actually. Thanks. -
[JFAIR] Spitfire (WIP)

Well after another month I finally have another update to this build. (Which is taking way longer than I planned.) I've gotten quite a bit of progress done since last time but there's still a bit more to do. First up I've done quite a bit of the tail section since last time. I've added the tail fin as well as the rudder control surface although the elevators are proving to be a bit tricky. The current way I have to control them isn't really working at all so I need to come up with a better way to do that. If anyone has any ideas feel free to suggest them. Looking a bit more like it should now isn't it? The wings have also been worked on and are now pretty much at there full wingspan which at the moment is about 89cm or about 35 inches. The ailerons have also been added and they actually work quite well. The entire left or right wing depending on which way you look at it. Both of the mechanisms for the landing gear and ailerons. I've also built and added the propeller which I think turned out pretty good if I do say so myself. Also looks quite good when spinning but you'll have to wait for the video to see that. Finally a view of the overall progress I've made. Really starting to look like a Spitfire now isn't it? One last thing is that I've also put in the M motor for the landing gear just in front of the IR receiver. Forgot to take a close up picture of that. -
It's going to be close but I think I might just finish my Spitfire by the end of March. Need to redo the control system for the elevators as the current one doesn't really work.

Very tempting... Thanks, one of the big goals of this MOC was to get all proportions as close as possible. Also very tempting. Yes I will be a make a video of all the functions and other stuff once I've finished it. -

Thanks. I currently don't have anywhere near enough plates to fully cover it all so unless I can get more plates (which isn't very likely) it will stay like it is now unfortunately. -

Another update. Finally... Yes it's been over a month since my last update but I now should have all the pieces to finish it. Progress should hopefully be a bit quicker now. I've replaced the wheels to a slightly bigger pair as the other ones where a bit to small. I quite like the look of these. I've improved the tail a bit as well so it's now a bit stronger. I've also added a bit more to the rear elevators. The cockpit windscreen has finally been added. And finally an overall picture of my progress. I'm also planning on motorising the landing gear if I can fit the M motor in which I should be able to do. -
Waiting on the last few parts to arrive and then I should have all I need to finish my Spitfire.
-
Been waiting to get more pieces as I ran out. Got a couple of bricklink orders on the way now so I should be able to hopefully finish my Spitfire by the end of February.

Just got mine in the post a few minutes ago. Really awesome, Thanks CopMike and everyone else of this great raffle.

Thanks. Yeah just checked to see what size they should be at this scale and your right, they are a bit small. I don't have any that are the right size however I will try and get some that are the right size at some point. Thanks. The landing gear seems to be coping ok with the weight so far however I haven't got the battery box in yet. I think they should be ok. Thanks. Been wanting to make one for ages just haven't had enough pieces until now. -

Just a small update today. I've worked a bit more on the rear section where the elevators and rudder are going to go and I've added the tail wheel as well. I've also done the landing gear. Hopefully It will stand up to the weight. And finally the overall progress so far. -

Thanks. With this I've tried very hard to get the shape of it as close as possible to the real thing. The worm gears are part of the control system for the ailerons on the wings. I have yet t decide on a way to do the landing gear. -

Another update today. Been working on it quite a bit the past couple of days so I've got quite a bit done. First I added the main section of the tail and started work on the elevator and rudder section. I've also changed the engine section quite a bit as well. With the M motor powering the engine and propeller it wasn't going as fast as I would have liked so I decided to swap out the M motor with a XL motor and gear it up a bit more. The speed is much better now. Also because of the extra power it has now I'm going to have to control it via the variable speed IR controller. Finally a overall shot of my progress. Not sure where I'm going to put this when I've got the wings on. -

Hey again. Got around to adding a bit more to this. I've added the main part of the control system in and strengthened the body a bit as well. The control system is a slightly modified version of the one I used in my Fully controllable Aeroplane. It works well enough so should be ok. And here is a picture of my overall progress.
