right, the picture I have up there is apparantly the Rock Crusher II, those are 1.72 inches wide. The Rock Crusher I is 1.53 inches wide, but honestly when you look at the threads it looks to me as if it are the exact same tires, just like you noted as well.

8880 Supercar build help.
Strikeman replied to Soluzar's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Soluzar, when you download & run the ldraw all-in-one installer, it will install all the necessary files and programs for you. If you don't want to start doing CAD work right away, I suggest you open the mlcad file with the "LDView" program that is included in the installer; this will give you live a 3D-render of the model in the mlcad file which you can turn around and zoom into to your liking. If the creator has made "steps" in his mlcad file, you can even run through to steps in that live 3D view ! It's really neat :) ps: Blakbird, I'm getting a 403 Forbidden error on Technicopedia at this very moment; is something going wrong somewhere ? -
TechnicMati, I don't know how much those actually differ from the Ansmann's and the Absima's that I just used; to me, the thread looks the same on all 3. I do see, via the link you shared, that the tires you mentioned are 1.53" wide instead of the Ansmann/Absima 1.45", but aside from that ... to me they seem to be an OEM product that is re-branded for the customer (Ansmann, Absima, Rock Crusher). but, please judge for yourself: Absima - Ansmann - Rock Crusher (These are pictures that came from Google searches, I do not know if the Rock Crusher is the correct one)

Maybe we should move this conversation to another topic as we're effectively hijacking midengineaddicts topic about his excellent crawler. But we know how that kind of topic would turn out of course as we have this kind of discussion every few months

Actually Phoxtane, they can be had for faaaar less than the tire that's most commonly accepted as the best LEGO tire available, being the Power Puller tire. The prices on Bricklink for these are out of control, if they're even available at all. I paid 10.5€ for 1 third-party tire (and they can be had much cheaper in the US), while the power pullers go for an average of 15€, if they're available. The Power Puller tires + rims are even averaging over 25€ per piece !!

Sets made in LDraw mini contest
Strikeman replied to legolijntje's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Congrats to the winners ! -
I think you should give peeron a try when trying to recreate older sets. They have scanned instruction for most of the old models. These scans are made by users from the original instruction booklets. They have decent scans for the 8868 for example. I prefer the user-scanned instructions on peeron over the official LEGO PDF instructions if they're available.

I agree with DLuders here. I just installed third-party tires on my 9398 crawler and it makes a WORLD of difference. Even with the differentials, it can now actually CRAWL over things. I'm now even able to drive up to a wall and it will just push itself 90° upwards until it falls; before it just stood there. I tried removing the differentials first without using third-party tires, but that did not help. And it is indeed a pity to build a set and not be able to show of with it, only because of the tires. I would never replace any LEGO ABS element with a non-lego equivalent (metal axles, metal u-joints, ...) but I have no problem with the tires.

I have received , baked and installed my new tires on the 9398 LEGO Crawler ! The tires are "Absima 1:10 complete wheel + Crawler-rim black offroad V-block profile" (number 2500030) 3 of the 4 tires were factory glued to the rims, so I had to remove the rims somehow . After reading some things on RC forums, I decided to use the "baking" method of removing them. Baking the tires makes the glue that's used brittle; if done correctly, it will be pretty easy to remove the tires from the rims. I preheated the oven to 175° Celcius (350° Fahrenheit) and put the tires+rims in for 6 minutes on a cookie sheet. After 6 minutes, I turned them over and left them in for another 6 minutes. WARNING: if you want to do this, make sure to have sufficient ventilation in the house (open some doors) because the plastic rims will start smoking and smell bad !!! After removing the tires from the oven, I let them cool as the plastic rim are soft. After a few minutes and after checking the plastic rim wasn't soft anymore, I applied pressure on the side of the tires close to the connection with the rim. I heard the glue crack while applying the pressure and the tires came right of the rims. The rims were completely deformed, but I don't have any need for those anyway . You SHOULD be able to save the rims by using a lower temperature and a longer cooking time (2x 7.5 minutes @ 160° Celcius / 300° Fahrenheit; your mileage may vary). The foam inside the Absima tires was unaffected by the baking process. The tires themselves seem to be unaffected as well . Even with the differentials on the 9398 LEGO Crawler it is now able to climb obstacles which were previously unattainable . Pictures: LEGO tire and Absima tire side by side both installed to give an idea of difference side view; note that the thread is, as far as I can see it, the exact same as the tires that Ansmann makes. From left to right: the original Absima rims in different states. 1: original rim, non baked (wasn't glued to the tire). 2: rim baked twice (because my first try I didn't put them in long enough and I started pushing the rim around while still soft). 3&4: baked rims as described above. As you can see, the baked rims are non reusable in any way

Sets made in LDraw mini contest
Strikeman replied to legolijntje's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
8043 was too much work to be completed before the end of the contest you can't have them all I guess It's a real pity, I'm about 90% done. I will finish it though and post it in the next couple of days ... super quick dirty render preview: -
Sooooooo I tried I did not want to disassemble my 9398 for the motors so I used an XL motor for propulsion and an M motor for the steering; I did not connect the steering wheel to the output of the medium motor (yet). I added 5/8 pins to the threads as without them the scooter wasn't able to plow through the snow. I used piterx' photos as a guide for building this, and it actually is my first real TECHNIC MOC, yay The problem at the moment is that it kind of sinks in deeper snow. It's either not fast enough (will try with other gear ratio if the snow doesn't disappear too soon) or the front skis weigh too much/aren't large enough. I tried with the original skis from piterx first but they were way too small to support the weight of the snowmobile. It does run fine on compressed snow or carpet though, but my carpet is only 3 feet long so there's not enough to make a movie. I'm gonna keep trying until it actually runs in normal snow and then I'll take some decent pictures

Thanks for the info DLuders; Yesterday I have ordered 4x Absima crawler tires with number 2500030. They were a bit pricier but with free shipping the total was 42€. They seem to have the correct dimensions with 48mm inside diameter and 37mm width. Their height is 108mm. I just got notice that they have been shipped and as soon as they arrive I will install them and take pictures.

Thanks Gene, I checked those out as well but Modelsport UK has them on backorder; as I mentioned earlier, Ansmann has been bought by another company and it will take some time for them to start shipping again (if they will even ship these again, ever). I THOUGHT that the other guys would have them in stock (as it mentioned on their website) but apparantly they were wrong :) I'll go looking around for another supplier (and probably another make).

I was afraid this might happen, I just got this email (from Time Tunnel Models): We are very sorry, but this item was listed in error - it has been discontinued and we have no stock available. A full refund has been sent back to your Paypal account. At least they are very correct and very fast about it; it looks like I'll check out those tires Gene just mentioned

I have no idea yet as I've ordered them a few hours ago; they still have to arrive But I was hoping they'd come off with a little prying ... Maybe efferman can tell us: did you get them with the rims or without the rims ? And if they were with rims, how did you get them off ? I did not find a version without rims in my online search.

My return from the drak ages
Strikeman replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Welcome back to LEGO Horace ! You can post your pictures on external websites (most commonly used ones are Brickshelf and Flickr) and link them here. Remember though, they should have a maximum size of 800x600. Brickshelf is completely free, has no limits except for the fact that what you upload MUST be about LEGO. Galleries are manually moderated so it might take some time (up to 2 days for new folders) to get them approved but deeplinking (direct link to the item you uploaded) works the moment you upload new content. I usually upload 2 versions of all my files to my Brickshelf account; a high-res (most of the time unmodified source image from my camera) and a "low-res" (800x600) for linking on forums. PS: your geartrain looks nice, but what exactly does it do ? -
Hey francisalmario, of course: the shop is called Time Tunnel Models, and the tires can be found here. When checking out, select WORLDWIDE SPARE SHIPPING (3,95£) to get the cheapest shipping option (the tires are listed under spares so this shipping method is valid).

DLuders, the problem is that the nearest "local RC store" is about 50 kilometers away from me. With current gasoline prices (currently around 1.7€/liter, which translates to roughly 8.5$/gallon) and a car that drinks 14 liters per 100 kilometers, the price for going there (and the time spent doing so) is much higher than the price of shipping from almost anywhere in the EU. Add to that the fact that almost any webshop will be cheaper than a local brick&mortar shop and you can understand why I chose to order my tires online (shipping was 5€, and driving 100 kilometers would cost me 23,8€, not counting the time spent in the car & shop). Even getting the "local" RC store to send me the tires is going to cost me more than ordering from a large webshop as the good people at bpost (Belgium postal services) have ridiculous tarifs (it'd cost 6,4€ to send the same tires inside Belgium ...) Yeah, it's great living here ... at least we have good social security !

Sorry to revive this topic but I've just built my 9398 yesterday and am already hating the tires So I thought let's look through the extensive Eurobricks history and lo and behold I find this topic here I've just bought 2 pair of the Ansmann 211000224 tires that started this topic with efferman. I see that the company that makes them has been sold to another company and at the moment, if your preferred (online) shop does not have them in stock, you'll have to wait for them until the new company starts sending them out again. Just as an FYI for people that'd still like to buy them: I've ordered them from the UK @ 31€ for 2 pairs, where as in Euro-mainland the best I could do was 26€ for 1 pair ... (prices exclude shipping)

I have transformed my attic into the LEGO room as it was getting a bit out of hand downstairs. The real "attic" (for the Christmas tree and stuff) is now 1/3th of what it was; the other 2/3th is all mine. It's not that big though, but it's still better than nothing I have just (mid December) reorganized it all to have a more comfortable building experience; before this, I was sitting on the ground with all the stuff sitting around me. Now I have an actual building table (small one, 120x60cm) and I have built a U-shape to have almost all my LEGO readily accessible. It looks like this: For storage, I use a few of the drawer thingies (left top on previous picture, close-up in this picture): But most of my LEGO is in "Really Useful Boxes". I use the trays that are in the Boxes; the boxes themselves are mostly used to put the trays ON instead of in. Since I'm the only user of the attic, I don't have to worry about dust too much. For the small elements I found that I was running out of space in the drawer thingies; since I was already using the larger "Really Useful Boxes", I bought a bunch of the smaller ones and made some (amateur) wooden frames so I can use them as drawers. I have built it with less than a millimeter of play so I can pull them out all the way and they won't fall out: I have found, until know, that this setup works pretty well for me! Some more pictures of my attic can be found in this Brickshelf gallery

Hey sapo, the carts that you fill in Bricklink are saved on the client side in your current session. Your session duration is pretty long, as long as you don't close your browser. The second you close your browser, your carts will all be empty and you will have to start again. This is due to how Bricklink is coded. As far as I know, they have started thinking (and maybe even coding, but I don't think so) about Bricklink 2.0. I hope they implement server-side carts in the new version too, but we will have to wait and see until it goes live ...

I personally think FanWelt had a decent amount of Technic on display, however, nobody really knows when another one will be organised. I had the feeling the 2012 one had a lot of success, so we'll see what happens in the near future. You can check out my Brickshelf gallery (link in my signature) for more photos; there's roughly 600 unedited photos in my FanWelt gallery (check out the topic I made about it here). In the Netherlands, there is "LEGO WORLD" (www.legoworld.nl). They will move to another hall in 2013 and since the Netherlands have a decent number of high end Technic builders (Jurgen Krooshoop, Barman, BricksonWheels are all Dutch as far as I know) I think the chance of a decent amount of Technic MOCs on display is reasonably good. The "Brickmania" events organised by my own LUG (BeLUG) in Belgium also have a decent amount of Technic MOCs on display relative to their size. But, being honest here, they lack in size if you want to come here from the USA. I'm very honest when I say that I have seen displays at FanWelt which have a larger ground area than the total area used for the latest Brickmania in Antwerp (which was great BTW) but again, a bit too small to come to Europe just for that. I hope somebody can give some comments on events in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy or the UK because I have only been to the above so I can not say if they're good or not. ps: there's of course also the Eurobricks Event, which I haven't attended yet but hope to do so this year.
