  1. I'd like to award: Trains: 3 points to Commander Wolf 2 points to Fenaughty Stock 3 points to electric steam 2 points to haddock51 Thanks everyone :)
  2. I'll wait then :) The bigger problem is what next.... I want to build Brunel's Atmospheric Railway, so I'm going too suggest the next one is: "To make in Lego - What could not be done in real life....." Trains related naturally!
  3. I've absolutely loved the wacky challenge, it really encouraged me to build stuff, not that's a problem :) The big question is WHAT ARE WE DOING NEXT..... How about whomever wins chooses the next topic?
  4. As it says in the title, came across a load of 7745 and a 12v motor in a cheap box bought from the paper :) So: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/dundarach/TMR/imgp6641.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/dundarach/TMR/imgp6646.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/dundarach/TMR/imgp6648.jpg sorry about the large pics - well I like em large :) And enough parts to build a 7760 on the motor - nice find, even had some light bricks and signal. Funny thing is to a non train person, someone buying for their kids now, they'd have thrown most of that away I guess!!
  5. Hello Get yourself a 9v battery and two pieces of wire and test motor bogie and then track with motor. If all okay, certainly the wire, you'll be able to bodge one up no problem. Chris
  6. Thanks for all the help everyone... The most cost effective and simplest solution is indeed to use a PF receiver.... Here was me thinking I could build something cheaper and easier, when in fact good old Lego have already done it! - right of to the Lego online shop :)
  7. Right would this work, if so I'll either order one, or search for similar in the uk... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5V-30V-5A-Reversible-DC-Motor-Speed-Control-PWM-Controller-ideal-for-6V-12V-24V-/150854583486?pt=UK_BOI_Industrial_Automation_Control_ET&hash=item231fa244be
  8. Thanks chaps, yes the maplin one is the kind of thing, as you say with a knob rather than a screw adjustment. What is irritating is I could buy a cheap rc car from eBay which has everything including speed controller and rc control for less than a fiver, if I could find one which worked on say 5v could I not just butcher it to fit the lego train - thus having cheap rc for my battery powered 4.5 locos.... As I don't really want to convert these to power functions and would rather not grab them as they pass to turn them off..and speed control would be nice as for shunting etc... Will keep looking, especially as I now have some better terms to google etc. Thanks again For example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Impreza-Radio-Controlled-Car-/271175469740?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item3f23514aac seems to be the correct voltage with speed control and rc - now if only the guts of that we're easily removed that'd be what I was after....
  9. 1974 - that made no sense, however firstly many thanks for the reply and second, never afraid to try ill go google the points and learn :-) I was rather hoping there was a cheapo solution I could wire in, in one go, however will go experiment Any other help would be welcomed, thanks again everyone :-)
  10. Yes I've got some power functions etc What I'm after is an inline mod between the battery box and a 4.5v motor brick to vary the speed So if I take one wire, cut it, insert a rotary volume switch (potentiometer?) would this work? And moving on from a simple speed control - could I wire a simple rc into this line So I don't want to use power functions - I want to leave the normal 4.5v motor brick and battery box - however want to control the speed
  11. Hopefully a simple question to people who know more about these things than me... Is there a way to wire a simple speed controller in between the batteries and the motors of say 4.5v and 9v motors, could I use a volume type rotary pot or would this overheat? Also if this is an easy one to answer, does anyone know of a simple after market RC speed controller I could drop in? Many thanks Chris
  12. They'd make a nice shower head...perhaps a beach scene... Mind you like what you've done better :-)
  13. Great job - looks and sounds dangerous, especially to minifigs :-) love seeing lego doing noisy mechanical stuff, the 'toy' / engineering contrast is fun. Cracking, cracking job sir!
  14. My entries are: The Mighty Atom2 http://www.brickshel...MR/img_0705.jpg http://www.eurobrick...topic=80643&hl= The AeroBrick http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/dundarach/TMR/img_0361.jpg http://www.eurobrick...topic=80694&hl= And I'm also going to chuck in my MetroLiner Crocodile Engine too Really enjoyed this and the ideas are great, thanks everyone :)
  15. That is amazing.... I can think of nothing more than completely amazing :)
  16. Mmm - turbine prop - will go investigate... However, before I'm off on jolly holidays, I can confirm the new larger propeller is here and it's much better. So now, a real 9v motor, not an overdriven 4.5v one... In order to bring some more passion (if we need it) to our hobby, the kids and I thought we'd re-enact the early days of the railway: Therefore Dundarach and the little D's give you: The Super-AeroBrick-Turbo with cheering :-) I'll be back with improvements after next week :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lpw60u3MXw8
  17. Yes I'm worried I'll destroy the 4.5v motor - by running it too fast. I tried a 9v motor as need the power to weight ratio of the 9v battery, however it would not run fast enough. So this evening I've built the AeroBrick-Turbofan which is self propelled - see below :-) And the video to prove it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2KxfuzirdAA I really want to only use Lego and I've ordered a new larger lego prop - however I'm not going to run the motor any more at twice the speed, so might need to re-think....
  18. New (larger) prop is en-route, also bought a 9v battery clip as the square 9v batteries weigh very little. Once all arrives and back from holidays will be building again - so lets see what happens :)
  19. **must not buy more lego..must not buy more lego** That's it - off to buy a bigger prop :-)
  20. No really the prop - haha - more work to follow :) However on jolly hols next week so be the week after... I didn't think it'd work either but really does - how cool is that...!!!
  21. The people of the Toffee Mountain Railway wonder that even though they are rightly very proud of the Atom2, two things are apparent: 1. Nuclear power might not be all that clean, something they’ve not really worried about 2. That entering the Wacky Challenge might require something a little more … wacky! There best minds have been on the case and they would like to present: The AeroBrick in its current prototype stage. They would also like to point out that it really goes….and have commissioned a test video too :-) http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/dundarach/TMR/img_0361.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Zr5B19k6yBQ
  22. Erwin cracking job, love the motor on the flatbed, I'd really like a monorail :-)
  23. No one can ask about the Mighty Atom1 However now that you have :) Failure is not an option in the Toffee Mountains.....the use of large windscreens and strange jet exhausts on the nose proved very unreliable! Truth is after several birds got sucked into the jets the design was scrapped and the exhausts moved to the rear of the locomotive.
  24. It would appear that the Atom2 is generating media interest, reporters in helicopters have arrived and taken video from above... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Pw53F1HaPQg it captures the sound really nicely and sounds very authentic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=1jHzR_RkH9o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=LlIAlG14vhw The Toffee Mountain Railway from the sky....
