Technic 2023 Set Discussion
nerdsforprez replied to Dami's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have shown in the past, with data, for at least the models from around 2010-2016ish, that is it the weight of the set, not pieces or size, that accounts more for the price of Lego models than anything else. The correlation coefficient is higher for weight vs. pieces and price, and the regression model is stronger for weight vs. piece count as well. I have articulated this in several different threads. Not sure why we persist with this antiquated idea that piece count should predict price better than anything else. Btw... this relationship existed for other Lego genres as well. I didn't look across many, but this relationship existed in the SW genre (especially large, UCS sets) as well and other large, adult sets. Yes, there is error in these models as well. As overall set weight includes manuals, boxes, etc. But, this error is present in all sets, and accounts for so little of the variance between set weight and price. The remaining variance is probably accounted for like by license vs. no-license, and other nominal factors. But weight, (i.e. cost of ABS) is the primary factor. I also have theory about how unique the sets' pieces are and that relationship with price. In other words, sets with many unique parts (defined as pieces per lot) likely are more expensive than sets with little unique parts. The rationale for this is because many vs. few molds are used, and we all know the cost of Lego producing, or at least using different molds, versus using few molds. Sets like Lego 21058 is very redundant. Uses very few unique pieces (relative to other sets) (i.e. tons and tons of just a few bricks). Such should be cheaper to produce for Lego than other sets with just a few pieces in every lot used in the set. If there is ANY rationale to the Liebherr's incredible price it should be in the weight. I predict an incredibly high weight for the box. At around 700$, this weight should be like and additional 1/3 to 1/2 of what the Liebherr excavator was. Which would be incredible. I am not saying that is what it WILL be. I am saying that is what it SHOULD be if there is any rationale with Lego's pricing. But.... things may be all out of whack given the rate of inflation in the last few years.... -
Can anyone confirm whether the L linear actuator is closer in size the L or XL version of this part in Lego? https://decadastore.com/products/cada-14-22m-large-hydraulic-cylinder-jv9034 I am searching for about 7 of these parts in the L size (Lego). I would prefer to buy from the CADA store if possible as their price is much more reasonable...

Yes...fringe interest indeed. I would need more info why you discount others achievements. I searched for like five minutes and found several examples that appeared credible to me of over 10000 rpms. In all honesty, 2800 rpms isn't really that much for Lego vacuum engines. I am sure there are engines out there capable of much more.

Agreed. Very vacuous phrase. What if the "is" that is being referred to is incredibly awesome? Or complex? Most "things" or "occurrences" in life are multifactorial or very complex. This phrase seems to dilute that fact. In reference to using this to define die cast cranes... well, true, "they are what they are." But not really. As already mentioned, I have several. They are actually very playable and transformative. They come with instructions on how to put them in all the different configurations of the real cranes. For example, in the case of my NZG Liebherr 11200 LTM, this is like 14 different configurations! And that is not including the extended luffing jib. There are different hook blocks for different lifts, the telescopic boom has like 6 different stages, setting it up in just ONE different configuration takes like an hour. I have to stand on a stood or small latter to fully play with it, My back hurts when I am done What I am trying to say is the playability actually in these cranes is INCREDIBLY awesome. So much more than a built Lego set. Don't get me wrong, Lego has more playability in the assembly and further building possibilities that a diecast set, but once built, IMHO a diecast set has much more playability that Lego. This should not be interpreted as a distraction from the thread. I state all this to prove a point in relation to the set being discussed. If indeed the price of 680 euros is correct, and there is not something offered well above what we already know, my $$ may very well go towards a kickin' RC car or another diecast crane. As a die-hard Lego fan, I think that really means something. I think they are treading a very fine line here.... Which equals hours and hours and hours of play time...... in some ways much more play time that even the biggest Lego Technic sets.... This is cute but honestly not sure I understand the meaning. Are you trying to convey that AFOLs should "stop being poor"? If so this is a complete missing the point. I don't think that the complaints about the price always have to be interpreted this way. For me it is more about not wanting to buy something of low value. Its not about not being able to afford the overall cost. If that is not the intended meaning, just ignore my post -

Don't confuse expense with value. I complain of the expense not because I cannot afford it but b/c of the potential of poor value (few elements, no evidence of electronics that would justify cost). Of course, I reserve judgment for now, and I hope this product presents with enough value for me to feel good about purchasing it. I also love cranes! -
I made a comment on the LaFerrari thread: that even though this indeed is good news there is no definitive instruction list for the fix to gearbox, no? Now that they have put it up for sale on their site are the instructions revised with the gearbox fix? If not, I would actually caution against buying it now unless one is prepared to search, etc. for the fix they will have a limited gearbox. Which is no fun. I bought the set and am now building it. As much as I love it I need to research how to fix the gearbox. Kinda a pain. Also, don't forget the possibility of the rims changing. I know there have been internal discussions at CADA on this. I have the old ones, which appear, universally, to be the poor choice for the rims. Again, perhaps another reason to wait on purchasing this.

I do not think it damages them if that is what you are referring to. Not trying to overpromote or anything but I have a Lego room in which I have several Technic sets either hanging on walls (mount is something I made myself) or I use the idisplayit floor mounts which still place models at odd angles. https://www.idisplayit.co.uk/ I take things off the mounts every now and then and inspect for any separated elements, damage, bending, etc. I have not encountered any yet. Things have been hanging for years. see U-wing (Technic build) in upper right Even official Lego SW UCS sets come with stands, that, I get it are not the same as a vertical hanging, but still have a lot of stress when off surface, positioned horizontally. I assume it is all okay.

ditto. In fact, I really didn't want to respond here, but 680 euros compelled me to throw my hat in the ring here. I know things will all be ironed out with time, but unless it comes with Liebherr boots and coveralls I don't know how in the world they can price it here. Will be interesting to follow. I said last year when it was supposed to be released last summer that this was a day one purchase for me. Now I am not so sure... For that price one can almost buy one of the large die cast cranes.... which have at least half the pieces of this set. I have some of those cranes. As much as I love Lego, I would MUCH rather prefer something like what was mentioned by @Saberwing40kon the last page... -
These have been all the rage lately: https://www.fantasmall.com/products/wallmount-lego-technic-green?variant=43085749780724&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAiAr4GgBhBFEiwAgwORrVfU8XfS0r0CFqZ_VVo11AetjzoSvGKWK0qwci72fvt6v3O6yjihHRoCqJ4QAvD_BwE though they are a bit expensive. There are really endless options if you just look up Lego wall mounts online

Lego mobile cranes, with telescopic booms instead of lattice booms, really should not be compared with crawler cranes (lattice booms). If you think there are limitations with Lego in building lattice boom cranes, those limitations increase ten fold when building Lego telescopic booms..... to my knowledge Lego 42146 will be crawler crane with lattice boom...

Which is actually tiny for a flagship model. Lego 8288 is nearly that tall at only (~800 pieces) in its tallest configuration. I have it in my lego room. Just measured it. Sure, it is not a sturdy model, and nowhere capable of lifting 500 grams, but for me, this set is becoming more and more of a disappointment. Also, to counter @Saberwing40k's comment earlier, I actually think if this height is correct, ~2600 pieces is probably close. At this height this set would be only 1/3 of the height of the diecast model he is comparing it to. So yea, ~2600 pieces in a Lego crane at only 3 ft. tall seems reasonable if a diecast crane which is perhaps 10 ft. tall has ~1500.

Do you know how their customer service is? I ordered this from them, and it arrived on time, but the sticker sheet is all bent; several different ways. I reached out to them (Saturday) and still no response.... I do not see the instructions for the changes to the transmission. Where exactly did you find these. For clarification, I have received my copy of the CADA version, and am ready to begin building it, but I don't want to build a version with an error in the transmission. I also see this post by @Silverbird, but the link does not seem to be working. -
Hmm. CranesEtc. is a very reputable channel, but did you look at the unpacking of the LR 11000? Does not look like 1557 parts at all. Unless, and this is a big unless, they are counting all the screws, etc. used to assemble the model, which I am sure they are, why wouldn't they? Also remember for every screw there is a corresonding nut. I have several large diecast cranes, all mobile cranes (including Liebherr LTM 11200), so track count is out, but the part count on that is nowhere near 1500 parts. I get it, smaller crane, etc., but really, there is reason to believe the 1557 figure may not be correct. If it is correct, consider this.... the size of the diecast is many times larger than the purported Lego version. The video you refer to indicates that the review covers a model with an extension pack, which he refers to making the model "a real ceiling buster". The crane, as CranesEtc. constructed it, was 7 ft. tall., but with the extension pack really can get to probably 10-12 ft. in height. Which really adds to the part count because of all the screws needed to attach additional lattice parts to the main boom. As an owner of several similar cranes, these are not just attached with a screw, but also a nut. At at least four points. So that is at least 8 parts for every connection part on a boom. Also, the NZG model will come with many details I am sure the Lego model will not bother with. Look at just the weights. I counted nearly 50 of them. Look also at all the guard rails. Lego version will not utilize anything like that. Also, the NZG model has TONS of tracks, which add to be part count. All in all, I question the part count of the model crane, but indeed, if it is accurate at 1557 honestly I don't think the disparity between the model crane and the proposed Lego crane is all that off.....

Thank you for the update. I did not know about all this. Kinda wished I had waited then....b/c I don't have plans on building right away. I have too much other stuff going on. On well..... -

Still not available in the CADA store. To my knowledge it is past the Chinese New yr. Gonna have to buy somewhere else.
