Hi All, I built 2 gearboxes last night, a simple direct drive to diff, so I guess a 1:1 ratio and I recreated the 2 speed gearbox out of the 8110 Jeep I built (designed by MrTekneex) and both seem like possible solutions and compact enough to fit in my chassis, but the jeep gearbox I didn't have time to sort the gear switching, so that would be something I need to add. I have also found this video on youtube, which also looks like a possible solution, as I could then add an additional motor and control the up/down gear change remotely through my scratch code and mini keyboard, however looking at the gearing, I'm not sure if the 2 speeds are different enough? I don't have any understanding of gear ratios, I can't get my head around it, but I want to try and have a high and low gear, fast and slow. It's definitely a great way of learning more about technic and the challenges many of you face building such fantastic designs, with such complex functions.

@anton1678 I’m not sure, motor speed can be controlled through the Scratch program on the Pi, removing the need for gears, however it’s not something you can do without a screen and I am only connecting it to my tv when I first switch on and will then disconnect the cable to control it from the mini keyboard. Reverse is already in my program control, so no need for a reverse gear, thinking maybe 2 or 3 forward gears? I will have a look at Sariel’s page, I’m sure there will be some helpful info @Balrog Yes I see your point and it would probably be alot easier, however I didn’t have Technic when I first ordered my acrylic chassis and I’m still not sure I know enough about Technic to build a chassis from scratch, but a good idea and something I may still do, but I would still like to work with what I have, I don’t really have a lot of Technic (mainly sets I don’t want to mix), so Technic works out expensive buying all the parts, although I do have my Unimog 8110 set that I wouldn’t mind using, it’s currently built as a jeep and trailer I should add, the gearbox will need a manual switch to change gear

Hi, That’s a good question, well I guess I bought a Technic set while working on my Pi project, loved it and after experimenting with robotics motors and wheels and not being completely satisfied in one way or another, when I saw some Technic wheels that I think will suit my old transit van look, it made sense to combine the two. Other people have been using Technic motors with Pi for quite a while now, so I also thought it can’t be that hard to do and using Technic also means I have a stable drive setup, hopefully any easier way of mounting to my acrylic chassis, rather than the make shift brackets I originally tried and it’s very difficult to find the right looking wheels, that work (have the right shaft diameter/fitting) for the motors I chose. I did make a small RasPiCar that uses small rc motors and works fine for what I designed.

Hi All I've been working on an rc van using a Raspberry Pi as the control and have decided to incorporate a technic motor for drive and would like to ask for some help and advice. I want to build a simple gearbox/drive in a compact design, but wasn't sure what gearing/design to use? I have forward and reverse control through the Pi/Scratch and it maybe easier to keep it as simple and reliable as pissible, any help/advice appreciated. [C-MODEL] 8110 Jeep
johp778 replied to MrTekneex's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ok I have completed my Jeep build, thanks MrTekneex for adding instructions to his webpage. I have also completed my trailer and pneumatic lift, I know it's not perfect and am sure better Technic builders could improve on it. Here's my pics and vids page http://raspivan.weebly.com/unimog-u400.html -
[C-MODEL] 8110 Jeep

I've now built a trailer (not as sophisticated as others), with a pneumatic pump in (powered from an M motor), which powers 4 cylinders (via an air tank and switch) that can be fixed to the side steps of the jeep, to lift it off the ground and when lowered, they are removed and stored in the trailer. I've kept the hitch very simple, but need to add a jockey wheel to the trailer and I plan to add another switch and air point to the trailer, so the pneumatic pump can be used to power other pneumatics. Pictures coming soon. For now I think I will stick with the jeep and try to continue to mod and maybe even build a caravan for it. -

Built my jeep, instructions are very good, not perfect, but I didn't expect them to be, I prefer it to the unimog & i'm sure it could be modded as well. Only issue i have is gears jumping, which i tried to improve by changing to a 4 axle with stop, but it's still doing it, although not in reverse, loooking side on at the gears near the xl motor, you can see the gear jump. I am considering using the leftover parts to build a hydraulic jack to lift it off the ground. -
Hi Pat, my name is Paul I read the modifications for improving the steering on here, so i changed the pins and removed the stops to make the steering easier and increase lock and changed the gears in the hub at each wheel.

Thanks, not sure I have the correct spares, but it's a great help and great pics, just the help I need -
Hi Pat, Do you still have info and pics on how to do the steering servo motor mod, I tried, but the servo motor didn't seem powerful enough to turn the wheels when on the ground. I have another setup from this thread, where an M motor is mounted in the back of the cab, this sort of works, but you have to go forward for the wheels to actually turn and won't steer in reverse at all.

[C-MODEL] 8110 Jeep

Was considering selling my Unimog, as I am a little disappointed I can't get the RC steering to work well enough, but now I've seen your Jeep, I think I will keep it and make the Jeep instead, maybe I could make my own moc trailer for the Jeep then. -
Has anyone got a better steering setuo, i've currently got the motor mounted in the frame of the back of the cab, as in an earlier post, however with the Unimigs weight, it doesn't really work. I tried using a servo motor directly to the steeribg axle, but this wasn't powerful enough and neither was an M motor. It needs an open space to turn and will only really turn when going forward.

Maybe TLG do, you'd also think they design the best they could, but maybe it's done to encourage us to buy more PF etc, it was a great campaign they did with the 9398 crawler body and maybe they should include a new area at Legoland for such models as Jurgens Ultimate version. I like the battery pack idea, mine is currently in my unimog cab, i'm certain you could make a small extension and mount it somehow, i think it's a small enough fitting to secure it through a beam hole. I think the 42009 is probably one of the best for upgrading and the unimog is great for designing your own addons.

Hi All I think i've answered my own question. After completing my build I had a further look & noticed a space below the front cab, where the axle comes from the diff, which is too coincidental I thimk, almost like the designers planned to put a motor in, but then changed their minds, so i put in an xl motor and it worked. Then i went to the rear and after removing the gear of the rear steering axle and swapping it for a shorter one, I mounted a servo motor, hooked it up and it worked, so I then connected both via a receiver to the battery pack and I have a spare controller (the train servo type) and had a play, it actually works perfectly, with servo control ovrr the drive and steering, you have great control and accuracy. I might change the xl drive motor for a smaller m motor, as I think the xl is too much and run the extension wires through somewhere. The servo steering motor out the back looks daft, but considering the space for the drive motor, i'm gonna guess the servo motor could be built into the rear section properly. As for making the other controls rc, i'm mot sure I want to invest so much more into it, although i did see a vid on youtube, where they had added motors to moving the control levers, instead of adding more motors and heavily modifying the model. I will upload pics and vid to my site asap.

Thankyou for your kind words, aiming for perfection is always the best way to start, but I still feel I am a novice when it comes to Technic and have only made minor modifications in comparison to most and mainly following ideas from others who have already done them and tested them. I often wonder who are the experts, Lego designers or passionate lego enthusiasts, but I guess a lot of the mods are not on the official model due to cost, but that's where an Ultimate Version like Jurgens would be a good alternative option or even an optional upgrade kit with instructions, but i guess that would spoil the fun of trialing your own mods. I actually made the decision to use a Technic front axle/steering setup on my RasPiVan project, but got distracted from that project by Technic, so it's sort of on hold at the moment.

Hi All I'm hooked on Technic, although my wife's not so happy and I can't really afford to keep them, so I build them, then sell them on, with the exception of a few. My main aim with most models is to make it rc, if it isn't already, so i'm just at the end of my 42009 build and although I really love Jurgens Ultimate Model, I can't afford to fund all the upgrades and as I will probably sell it to fund another model, I don't want to add too many upgrades, that will be difficult to remove later, but would love to make it rc and was wondering how big a challenge this is? I was thinking of mounting a motor to the rear axle out of the back for steering, although it won't look great, it would be really simple to do, assuming it will work, however I don't really know where to begin with adding a motor for drive. I've started my own projects website, with my technic models i've buikt on there www.raspivan.weebly.com. I should have said, i've tried downloading Jurgens pdf instructions, but it keeps coming up with an error, but thats downloading on my phone.
