This is terrific. So much to like here.

The interiors, characters, story, and smaller details are great as always but I agree with the others that the rockwork and waterfall don't work as is. I'd be interested to see more experimentation with the techniques you're using here, though. I love it when GoH members try new stuff even if it doesn't quite work out!

Thanks! I worried quite a bit that no one would be able to tell what it is. Thanks! That tree is one of my favorite parts too and was a bit of a last minute addition. That corner of the build just felt empty and weird without it. Thanks, ME! The border was an attempt to come up with something that seemed Mitgardian but also specifically dwarven.

Thanks Gideon! One thing the best GoH builders (and others out there doing other stuff) emphasize is that every build be a learning experience where new things are tried, even if it's just refining techniques you use frequently. Challenging yourself seems to be as key as listening to feedback and being diligent about studying other builds. Because I've been on the scene such a short time, I try to do something new every build. That can be habit-forming though, as I've found lately that this impulse translates not only to techniques and settings but also projects and genres. One of the reasons I've been more selectively building for GoH is that I've been branching out into other spaces and genres. Comments like yours, and MEs, and all the other wonderful comments, suggestions, and discussions we all have on a regular basis is why I'll always be an Historican first, though. :P

What a killer comment! Thanks ME. I think packing in details tends to happen for me more in action-heavy builds where I need to have a lot going on in small spaces. My battle scene for LoR (Rumble in the Shade) and my final Warlords of Nocturnus build seem to indicate that. Perhaps my Dark Tower builds have promoted a better balance of detail and minimalism. Or maybe it's the Kaliphlin setting! I definitely noticed that both my Ruadh builds strike a nice balance. I might say the same about my most recent GoH build also (Old Faces). I think in general, though, I'm just continuously humbled and inspired and educated by the other builders here and elsewhere. I feel like I get better all the time!

I have to agree that this is a nice execution of the concept. There's one thing that holds the build back a bit, I think. mrcp6d mentioned that the backside of the hand, where the spy is, has a lack of detail. This is true. Without any landscaping of any kind, it looks like an "unfinished" area or that it wasn't meant to be shown/photographed (like in a facade style build).

I still prefer it minimalist, the way SarahJoy adapted it. This is definitely the best entry so far and the minimalist version is the best version IMO!

Hi everybody! I started this thread and am glad to see it generate so much interest over the past few months. I was recently asked to help out with the Scifi Theme role-building project and it's definitely progressing nicely! That said, the folks over at Merlin's Beard (which hosts Lands of Roawia, a Guilds of Historica-like role-building setting) had a few people split off to make a science fiction version called Struggle for Klegon. SfK is going to be closer to GoH or LoR in style so I don't think there's much overlap with our project on EB, which is completely different and has its own exciting vision that is unique to the role-building games that are out there now. That said, it isn't ready yet and there's a lot of you who would like to do some community role-building in a scifi setting in the meantime, right? Because SfK is so different from what Bob and his team have envisioned, I want to be clear that I'm not trying to split potential membership or create some kind of competition so hopefully nobody feels like I'm crossing a line by mentioning this! Both projects will have different things to offer. I wish I could say more, but trust me that it'll be clear (in good time!) why I think they are compatible and why I personally will be building for both and having a blast doing it!

Thanks! Agreed. Since this is Avalonia, I thought a richer green would be good. Thanks! Oh yeah? Which parts specifically? :P Thanks, Vit! Thanks! I struggled with how to differentiate this from the other two builds posted so far. I think that is the true challenge with Category A. Thanks LV! Heh. Glad someone noticed that! Yes. Something with the light quality. I took the figless pic the night before, with only my lamps and main kitchen light. The next day was a bit overcast and there was a lot of natural light plus the lamps and kitchen light. Not sure why the pics came out the way they did, but I did try to experiment with the lighting to compensate. You'll see four versions of the final pic on Flickr with different lighting. One turned out a bit blurry and I thought of using it because it almost gives an impression of mistiness. Decided that clarity was better.

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
mccoyed replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
My Cat A is done. Nice dwarves, MK. I dig that orc hairpiece with the black beard. I have a few of those, so I'll probably be emulating the style. Also nice to see someone else using those very dwarven Hun shields! -
Book II Challenge III Dwarven Affairs
mccoyed replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
My Cat A is done: -
The main forces of the dwarf army prepare to advance into Avalonia. Meanwhile, scouting parties range through the borderlands in search of drow. Occasionally, they encounter remnants of the ancient dwarven civilization that once stretched across all the North and West of Historica. They pause to pay their respects to the dwarven kings of old, buried as they are beneath centuries worth of earth, stone, and memory. Figless:

Very in step with the Lake Town Attack set recently released.

This is wonderful. Like trying to bring a Ghibli movie to life in Lego. I like everything about this build and strongly disagree about the critiques over the use of a stone tower with a tree and so on. It looks exactly as whimsical and unlikely as it should, but I also see how much thought you put into the construction of the tower in contrast with the shape of the tree, where it's thickest and how it grows around the stone.

After I saw Legonardo's statue, I was like "how does anyone compete with that?" and was very discouraged about Cat A. Now I see more possibility! Wonderful build, V.

My understanding was that the dwarves kinda woke up one day and said "let's go mine in Avalonia anyway, cuz elves can go buzz off". If they're doing it for a very rare and precious resource, well, that makes a little more sense. I didn't get the notion that the elves and drow are working together. In fact, having the dwarves wanting to fight drow in spite of border issues also makes sense but there seemed to be a lot of to-do about mining rights in the first few story builds. I'm not trying to dismiss any work on the story, mind you. I thought you and Ecc were keeping stuff vague for a reason!

Great and clever build, Jakorin. One of the best interiors I've seen at this scale!
-
Yeah, Githril-lust sounds like a great reason for the dwarves to break off and do their own thing in Avalonia. Less vague than the current reasoning, that's for sure.

Great work, LV. Like SarahJoy said, the trim is a unique and nice touch. My favorite part of the build aside from the figs. :P

Thanks so much, SarahJoy! I've enjoyed building for Ruadh but the North is calling its sons and daughters home!

Good luck out there, Simon.
