  1. very nice review indeed. B.t.w. a lot of children just love this set. One year we had it with us to LEGOworld and children asked a lot of questions about it.
  2. I couldn't agree with you more. About the headlights, it is also very strange that that both sets are missing backlights of course :) In the train business headlights are quite important as 'red lights' stand for: danger ahead, brake immediately.
  3. Name: Jetport Fire Squad Set No.: 6440 Theme: LEGO System / Town Year: 1991 Pieces: 84 Minifigs: 2 Price: USD 27.50$ (which equals about EUR 19,26€ and GBP 15,57£) Introduction: One of the sets that especially my cousin likes is this one. One time at the Dutch LEGOWorld event we had three of those there with flashing lights and loud sirens trying to put out the fire that was caused by the crash of again some LEGO aircraft. We never had this set before our drak ages and the sets probably came from ebay or so. In my opinion the newest Airport rescue is nice too but in the conclusion I will make some additional remarks about that. Just imagine what it would be like for your LEGO town if the pilot of one of your smaller planes, just couldn't stop before the end of the runway. Here you see the disaster that happened some day in our town: Fortunately all passengers got out safely thanks to our brave fire fighters. This magnificent truck was used to help putting out the fierce fire caused by the aviation gas from the small plane. The set includes two firefighters in distinguishable airport uniforms. In order to be able to safe the passengers and go for a quick intervention, our brave firemen have an axe for each of them, airtanks and a portable fire extinguisher. Here you see the truck on the right side. The large spout on the roof really makes it a remarkable truck. As you can see, behind the red door, there is space for the airtank of our brave firemen, at the right there is also place for the small hand held extinguisher. The left side of the truck has a water hose instead. For a truck from 1991 there is quite some room inside. Actually both firemen fit inside. Unfortunately there is only one seat. At the back there are two clips for the axes. There you can also find the main switch for the light and sound system. As you can see, the red flashing lights, do their job quite well. The sirene is just behind the bar with the flashing lights. The main spout just seems to begin emitting water. The front of the truck. For some reason there are two hidden spouts there as well. What their purpose is seems unclear but they look nice. KimT suggests that it is for foaming the runway and that is a real option of course. This set can be found on: Peeron Lugnet Brickset Bricklink entries Playability: 8/10 (Very nice set, details that are movable and of course the light and sound) Design: 8/10 (nice sets with nice details, but could have even been better: seat for 2nd fireman missing, no oxigen masks and only one airtank) Price: 7/10 (For a light and sound set and two firefighters, the price is reasonable I would say.) Overall: 8/10 (nice sets, some details could even be better, too bad that there is only a five to choose from a sticker when you have more than one truck) Last but not least an overview of the complete set including instructions. "Fire mastered" as the Dutch firefighters will say when they have completed their job. We have also bought the newer airport rescue truck (7891). However we think this 6440 one is much better. The light and sound, all the nice features and the nice details are much better than the new truck.
  4. Really nice MOC's! Indeed the police car is very good. I would now love to see an RNLI lifeboat as well
  5. First set: Name: Road N' Rail Maintenance Set No.: 4546 Theme: LEGO System / Trains / 9V Train Cars Year: 1991 Pieces: 74 Minifigs: 1 Price: USD 10$ (which equals about EUR 6,8€ and GBP 5.50£) Second set: Name: Road N' Rail Repair Set No.: 4525 Theme: LEGO System / Trains / 9V Train Cars Year: 1994 Pieces: 81 Minifigs: 1 Price: USD 10$ (which equals about EUR 6,8€ and GBP 5.50£) A lot of people almost had tears in their eyes at the end of a great era: the year of 1991 when LEGO went from the gray 12V train system to the wheel powered 9V system. A lot of nice additions like the remote controlled switches and points, were never introduced to the 9V system. However the 9V system also brought a lot of advantages. The rails were more durable and much easier and quicker to lay. That is why quite some people went away from the 12V system towards the 9V system. Some LEGO conglomerations still stayed faithful to the old 12V system. To make it easier for the 12V towns to accept the change to the new 9V system, LEGO released the Road N' Rail Maintenance truck. The truck is used to keep the tracks clean and detect any track irregularities and point malfunctions. Unfortunately, LEGO did not immediately release the Road N' Rail Repair digger with the truck. That might have triggered quite some LEGO cities to replace the 12V rails by the new 9V system much sooner. But well, when the rail and road digger was finally released, a lot of LEGO railroad officials decided to put it to good use, both for the older 12V tracks and newer 9V railroads. These sets nicely fit together! With the first one, the railroad workers can scout the tracks. The digger might actually also use the truck to transport dirt etc. Maybe the faster truck can also let some railroad workers sit in the back of the pickup and help the digger operator to reach his vehicle soon. An overview of the two Maintenance vehicles and the 12V people (most of them already with their brand new Northern Rail uniforms that will actually mark the entrance of the 9V era) that stare at them with quite some caution, but also some curiosity. Well, let's first have a look at the Road N' Rail Maintenance truck. The model looks a little bit like a Mercedes Unimog that is actually a realistic representation of the real world situation. The railroad worker has the new Northern uniform with white/red stripes. Back in 1991 Northern Rail safety regulations must not have been very strict, since the worker did not need to wear a safety helmet at all. It seems to be that our warrior of the railroad has had a rough day, but he still looks very LEGO friendly. The Maintenance truck seems to have some very peculiar accessories. First of all we would ask ourselves the question whether it shouldn't have been names Road N' Rail Garbage Truck. I have never noticed a restroom on our LEGO trains and so, what would our skilled railroad worker need to do with a trash bin?! The broom and shovel are very useful to keep the tracks both clear and clean. The digger doesn't have any accessories, but for one or both sets some additional tools like a blade saw would have been appropriate. Now the truck itself. As said, it has the appearance of an Unimog. An antenna on the roof makes communication with rail traffic control possible to make sure that no trains will be guided to the same block that the rail vehicle operates in. A yellow flashing light on top of the roof even improves visibility of the truck while being on the tracks. The truck has the (for 1991) new Nothern Rail logo on the doors (a transparant sticker with black logo). Strangely enough the truck just has frontlight and no backlights. The retractable wheels of the truck are demonstrated in this picture. As you can see there is a little traction problem. So hopefully the truck is driven directly by the track-wheels and not directly by the road wheels on the tracks. For both vehicles, mounting the tracks is really a piece of cake. As you can see, LEGO has used nice wheels with springs for the rail truck (road) wheels. Well back to work! A good moment to take a look at my little brother (or sister?!), the rail digger. The rail digger is actually officially called "Road N' Rail Repair". It resembles the Road N' Rail Maintenance quite much, at least for the bottom part. By 1994 new orders were issues to the Northern Rail railroad workers to wear safety hats. In this case a nice white one. Maybe a yellow helmet would even had been better, but the helmet is already quite an improvement compared to the driver of the rail truck. SNOT is not used very often in City sets, and yet this is exactly what gives the Road N' Rail Maintenance digger just that nice additional touch. Here you can see the digger on the tracks. Apparently the distance between the tracks and the wheels is a little bit better for this set although it should not matter since the car bases are identical. To improve stability when digging or other operations, the digger can lower their outriggers in a very neat so that they perfectly keep the digger on the tracks. As you can see, the digger has a very nice reach. This helps improving and building the track (digging ditches next to the tracks, helping to place points, etc.) The digger has two handles: one for turning the body, the other for operating the arm. The operator is using his feet to speed up or slow down the truck and raise or lower wheels and outriggers. For safety, the direction of the rotating body will determine the direction that the wheels turn. Also an nice feature, is the use of the retracted outriggers to fix the 360 degrees turnable body of the digger in a forward (or backward) position. Both of the vehicles look very nice when standing next to each other with the rail-wheels raised. As you can see, the digger also has the antenna for traffic control purposes. It is nice to see that LEGO changed some parts of the 1994 vehicle from red/yellow into gray, which makes the digger even more attractive. One major flaw of both of the vehicles is the magnet. The magnet should be placed at the bottom of the front or back 'plate 3 x 2 with hole'. This makes it impossible to fully retract the rail-wheels and is too low to connect it to a train or engine. Also placing the magnet on top, improves this situation, although the magnet then still takes up some space under the plate and is then a bit too high for the train magnets. An other issue, is that both vehicles have just one magnet. That makes it impossible to put both behind e.g. a shunter. As one can see in the inset, a nice feature of the digger is that there is room at the back to store the magnet. The truck also has enough space at the back to store the magnet there. This compensates a little bit for the problems mentioned before. Having both vehicles connected to each other on the tracks look really cool, don't you think? The railroad men of my town are really happy about them. Peeron 4546 / 4525 Lugnet 4546 / 4525 Brickset 4546 / 4525 Bricklink entries 4546 / 4525 Playability: 8/10 (Could have been improved by adding 'dirt' or so, nevertheless especially when combined, both very playable) Design: 8/10 (nice sets with nice details, missing some extra rail tools that would have been nice) Price: 7/10 (20 bucks for both of these nice vehicles is quite a nice deal isn't it?!) Overall: 8/10 (nice sets, would go nicely fit in with train collections between 1980 and now) Well that was it then, lets get back to work replacing 12V by 9V tracks. The 7760 is lending a hand to the digger while the truck is using the road to get to the next working spot as soon as possible. It would have been really great to have a "Road N' Rail Maintenance and Repair" set that included both vehicles. Back then, LEGO also did not offer packs of different sets, but actually they should have with these, although there weren't even released in the same year! But who knows, maybe the wise men at Billund will take notice of this topic and release a new set like this next year along with the new PF trains, so our minifigs get all the help they need to even make the great LEGO railroad tracks even better, cleaner and safer!
  6. INDEXED Name: Refuse Collection Truck Set No.: 6693 Theme: LEGO System / Town Year: 1987 Pieces: 103 Minifigs: 2 Price: unknown Special parts: 4215ap08 (Yellow Panel 1 x 4 x 3 with Recycling Pattern), just occurs in this set (2x). 4598 (Red Bracket 2 x 3 - 2 x 2), occurs only in this set and only one other set. This truck was introduced in the same year that LEGO came up with the garbage bins that of course also appear in this set. Have you ever wondered why most of the time the streets of LEGO City are so clean and neat? No litter, no garbage everywhere, no chewinggum on the streets. Even with so many different inhabitants, it seems to always stay that way. However, the older AFOLs amongst us, have experienced totally different situations: rubbish everywhere, smelly and dirty looking pavements, minifigs that were losing their standard grin. That is why LEGO came out with this magnificent truck back in 1987. Before that, people needed to put there garbage in bags or maybe barrels. From that year on, every miniman and miniwoman is happily using a trash bin. The minifig civil servants never seem to become tired and the Garbage truck comes every other day to collect the rubbish and keep the city clean. The secret behind the clean LEGO city and the always happy 'standard grin' of our minifolks are the anti-litter warriors that use their powerful machines and handy tools to just get the job done! So if you don't own a garbage truck, better try to get one, before your standard grins also fade and your streets become as dirty as Naples (where the garbage collectors recently had a strike for quite some time). An overview of the set including instructions (actually one is included in the set). Unfortunately I afraid we don't have any boxes of this set left. Another image of the LEGO items in the set. It shows the truck, two civil servants to perform the waste collection duties, two garbage bins and a broom and shovel. The two chaps that always seem to smile, even when the litter that they collect really stinks. The accessories that accompany the set. A broom and a shovel to help cleaning up in case a dustbin tips over. A very nice feature of the set is that the elevator at the back can be lifted in more or less the same way that real garbage trucks do. As you can see here, the dustbin is emptied through a red 'train window'. (It seems to be that the hinges of my version will need some 'revision'.) Panels inside the back of the truck maximize waste capacity for this 4 stud wide truck. It is nice that the designers added this simple red round brick on a clip. Presumably it should depict cylinders to let the back compartment tip for emptying or otherwise it might be gastanks. Again the complete set. It is very complete set but some additions could make it even more playable: - garbage (e.g. a green flower bottom or some round plates 1 x 1) - a place for the second worker to position himself on, when the trucks needs to drive to the dumpsite or an other street and also vertical bars for that second worker to hold himself by. This is what the truck will look like when dumping the litter at the recycle plant or dump site, the whole back nicely tilts, so that all the litter will fall out of the truck. A view on the back of the truck. Quite a small but yet effective opening. The front of the truck. Only one seat for just the driver, but I personally prefer that to a 6 wide truck that fills the total width of the streets and has problems with corners. Of course set 7991 (The orange garbage truck of last year) is also nice, we also own some of those but we never put them in our LEGO Town since they take too much room and the color scheme of 6693 is also more preferable to us. The two panels with the printed recycling pattern are a bit worn so we might recreate the recycle logo and put it on a sticker some day. Playability: 8/10 (Like I mentioned it is too bad that the set doesn't have any litter [however LEGO also saw that and has put litter in the 6693 set]) Design: 9/10 (a really nice truck with two minifigs and very nice details) Price: -/10 (I was not able to get any price information, at bricklink one can still obtain a 2nd hand one for about 25$.) Overall: 8/10 (a set that should be entitled a 'classic' in the same list as the pizza restaurants, the 7750 and the blacksmith shop) That was all the pictures I was allowed to take since it seems that those brave man still have quite some trash cans to empty. Thanks guys for doing the dirty work so our minifigs stay happy and our streets stay clean! Peeron Lugnet Brickset: Bricklink entries Additional notes on the review: My brother has always been keen on garbage trucks. However when he became aware of this truck it wasn't available in the stores anymore. Newer sets that had the 'recycling theme' we not that good. They didn't have the emptying mechanism. So after our dark ages, one of the first sets we bought, were some of those nice refuse collection trucks. Although the new orange truck has the desired mechanisms and thankfully is a decent garbage truck, we more like 4 wide trucks than 6 studs wide trucks, so for the years to come our LEGO town inhabitants will still be seeing this great truck to control their waste problems.
  7. Oohw whoops, my ISP filter just kicked in. But I have the password so... Hmm that didn't work, well then the VPN of my university ;) Hmm, very nice, guess she got them in a LEGO Store or Park?!
  8. Well, I think I'll use some of them for sure (like the exxon one) and I will put some pics here then. Still waiting on part for our printing press though :s
  9. so just out of curiosity, how do you prefer your hello world to be written? <?php echo "Hello World!"; ?> begin MessageDlg('Hello World', mtError, [mbOk], 0); end; public void main () { printr("Hello World"); } Greetings Johan and welcome at eurobricks ;)
  10. Well, I have used jopiek for about 11 years now I guessm since I became active on the internet (1997 when I started my Bachelor in Informatics). it's a modification to my first name Johan (eng: John) and the added K of my lastname. So it also should be pronounced [jopʰiːkɑ] or in English [jopʰiːke].
  11. Well, sound like you have some pretty concrete idea's to tickle TLG with :)
  12. Nice set, nice review, I already have one coastguard set (that truck) but I like the idea very much. However, the Rigid Inflatables could be much improved (see the real ones at www.rnli.co.uk or www.knrm.nl)
  13. I guess we'll just see, wouldn't we! B.t.w. strange that we (at least I) haven't seen any pictures of the powerminers. When you haven't seem them, how can you decide if you like them or not? Hope they are better than the rockraiders at least.
  14. well, that train looks quite nice, I'm sure it is quite expensive too ;) but what real train does this train mimic?! (do you have pictures?)
  15. Well that looks nice. I own some blacktron sets but these would indeed fit in to that original sets. B.t.w. the set you created costs # Price EUR 17.66 for me, so that will be over 20 bucks, so you have nothing to complain about I'm afraid ;)
  16. Well I think I can understand why darthperson calls it disturbing. But we live in a world with a lot of disturbing rubbish. In case of pirates and castle, we make a myth out of it and then it becomes acceptable, in the movies most of such a things are also considered as common (and I myself am also fond of CSI). In this case it boils down to why that guy created and posted those images.
  17. In LEGO city no one lives at the back of the houses, but maybe you could and a back door to the cell, now it seems a little bit too easy for an escape :)
  18. Maybe it has to do with licenses?! LEGO now and then is a very strange company...
  19. very nice ;) Now hopefully the space police will be indeed very blind ;)
  20. Well, I don't mind reading, but seeing the set is even better since then I recognize it (most of the time) immediately.
  21. Well, indeed looks like a very nice set. Especially the scared knights are very nice ;)
  22. JopieK

    Der Geist

well, that fig indeed looks like a german ghost :) I'll be going to Germany in a week or two to meet german AFOLs, but hope I don't run into this guy ;)
  23. well they look very nice, hopefully the ship will not sink too :) b.t.w. did you see the pictures of the new pirate ships that LEGO releases next year?!
  24. b.t.w. those bottles are quite expensive at bricklink. They only occurred in a Coca Cola red crate before (Football set).
  25. Well sawfist, nice to have you here! Do you have other interests besides the agents sets?!
