I own 1991 European Catalog (German-French-Italian languages version). Big sets of that era, from #8862 to #8865 and the Control Center, are fully advertized. Last three pages are occupied by Model Team catalog. I don't know why in the States ones there was such a discrepancy like this. On Peeron, I saw 1994 US Technic catalog with no #8880 advertised, while int he same time European kids (and early adult fans) already dreamed of that set.

About the gearbox use: it seems TLG forgot their own product is an educational toy too; in these years they focalize the sets mainly on functionality purpose, leaving mechanical one often on the edge (with some notable exception, of course ). As a Technic fan, this way makes me sad .

Now I wanna understand why in italian catalogue they tell a 4 speed gearbox, while in dutch catalogue (language that I'm enough able to understand if I read slowly) they clearly say the gearbox is useful for motorized functions . Now, I expect new SC as 2011 epic failure. PS As I expected, another great 20€-range set .
