New LEGO Stores opening in 2014-2015
JGW3000 replied to rubberninja's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Great, now I will have the chance to deal with heavy traffic to get to 5 different LEGO stores instead of only 2, at least Westfarms is marginally approachable. Considering that Westfarms is close to LEGO NA HQ in Enfield, CT, anychance that this one will be 'special' -
Sets you have not opened yet ... and why?

My 8109 flatbed, still have it hiding in the basement If I build it, my kid will play with it (and probably get his finger stuck in some mechanism!), flea-bay prices aren't high enough (yet) to justify a resale, and don't need the parts (yet), so there is sits in a kitty-proof garment storage bag. -
Your Best Technic Bargains
JGW3000 replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Today, 20 % off at TRU on a 9393 tractor, purchased on a whim (yes, its a small purchase, but now sold out at S&H) -
With the servo motor you can fake a solenoid valve, but it is not cost effective to use $25+ worth of parts to simulate a $2.00 part (of course both will need the same wireless receiver). Shame, as the RC transmitter already has what is essentially 8 channels, so you could in theory control eight switches with just four IR receivers.

Last night couldn't sleep, so was browsing on the vast wasteland that is e-bay. It occurred to me that a large farm-related set is long overdue, perhaps another pneumatic/LA integration opportunity for 2H14? A car carrier, done Technic style, would also be cool as a flagship model. Also noticed that the 8101 Unimog is finally listed as "call to check availability," indicating its days of availability are numbered. Many of the remaining 2012 9*** series sets are no longer available on S&H as well.

Review - 42008 Service Truck
JGW3000 replied to technicmad's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Suzan may be someone at TLG. For what its worth, I accidentally noticed that the author of the pdf instructions, downloaded from LEGO website, for the 8109 main model, is "suzan", you can see this by right-clicking on the file name and select properties, from Windows explorer. Clearly suzan is someone working at LEGO group, and is associated with the Technic team in some regards, at least in preparation of the pdf instruction books. -
Where did the Advent calendars go?

This isn't a forum for social welfare issues, but employees at Walmart, etc... are struggling to get by in life as it is, they do just what they are told and that is it, even if they see something wrong, they don't want to get the blame - low pay, low expectations. I see this all over, Home Depot, Target, etc... I always carefully inspect everything I buy that comes in sealed packages, and never buy used off of the internet unless the contents are clearly displayed. The cost of this loss, to the store at least, is part of their overhead, and is just another cost of doing business - cheaper to please the customer than to solve the problem. LEGO needs to improve the sealing of their packages to help minimize this. -
The LDD software forced me into "safe mode" due to some claimed issue with the graphics driver. I don't mind so much, but the "safe mode" background is sort of annoying, and are there any restrictions that happen when in safe mode? thanks

[REVIEW] 42024 - Container Truck
JGW3000 replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you for the informative review. Looks like no clutch gears were involved? Maybe with the PFs added? I'd might get one as this looks like a great 'parts box', more than 200 parts more than the identically priced 42006 excavator (including all of the tread links the 42006 comes with). -
Paid Membership with perks? Any interest?
JGW3000 replied to Siegfried's topic in Forum Information and Help
I'd pay a small amount, already doing so on another, unrelated adult-oriented hobby forum. On the other site, they offer "sponsorships" in which donors get to sponsor particular pages, with their name/screenname and a courtesy link posted. For this site, perhaps someone could sponsor a particular topic and get a discrete link to their BL shop at the top of certain index pages? -
For this particular MOC, I need to have a discrete step motion - a PF standard motor would be difficult to control to give specific amount of rotation. The servo motor will give about 90 degrees rotation on every actuation, which after some gearing and maybe a linear actuator, will result in a known distance of travel of a particular component. A gear rack or two may be involved at some point rather than an LA, still pondering this aspect. I am looking to build a rig for focus-stepping in the vertical direction, with steps in the micron range, the stage only needs to travel 1-2 millimeters; however, the focus steps need to be highly repeatable as this is a requirement for the software used to integrate the stack of images. I have seen this done, with LEGO of course, for focus-steppers in a horizontal direction, with micron-level travel steps.

[TRIPLE] Lifestyle machines
JGW3000 replied to Doc_Brown's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Outtakes, brilliant -
I am thinking of implementing a ratchet action with a servo motor, implemented with a 24T clutch and a catchment mechanism. Activating the servo at full power should give me 90 degrees of rotation on the 24T gear, 'clicking' through the catchment, and rotation on any meshed gears. If the catchment holds, then when the servo returns to its start position, the clutch should slip and not turn back when its axle turns, and any gears turned by the clutch gear should retain their new position and not return back? I think this would be a good way to transfer rotation to linear step motion, which I will need for a MOC I am thinking of. thanks for comments

Thank you for your thoughts and comments, clearly the direction to go depends on what you want to build; if it is a vehicle or vehicle-like, large sets are best. For other contraptions, depends, which brings me to my next question, in a different thread!

I know that many MOC builders buy large sets, such as the Unimog, 9398 Crawler, or Mobile Crane Mk II, just for the parts. Others use BL to get parts - many BL parts for sale seem to be parted out large sets current and recent. For BL, you pay a premium for someone doing the parting-out, but you only need to buy the parts needed. My question is whether one uses all of the parts or some significant fraction if you by a large set. For example, of the 2600 parts in the Mobile Crane, how many are useful for MOC creations - all, most, or half? Should I be buying large sets, or just BL the parts I think I need. thanks for replies and comments!

Very nice and realistic - years ago i've seen a similar digger in action, dredging sand from the middle of the Arkansas River, between Tulsa and Bixby, in Oklahoma - the digger and transport belt pivoted is needed to dig and deliver product, in this case sand, to a shore-based truck (or train car, can't remember). It would be great if you could retake the video in a more realistic setting (but not in a river!) -

41999 and small child warning
JGW3000 replied to JGW3000's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Tim er Jed, the 41999 is now a "41996.5" , thanks for asking - I'll get it back together this weekend, hopefully only a few pins got bent - this is one very well constructed machine and seems no wear for the worse. Considering the TLG has designated that most Technic sets are appropriate for older children (and AFOLs), I am thinking of a new concept for the younger ones, and anyone can feel free to take it further, a new Cuusoo project based on the concept of: Duplo-Technic!!!!!- 27 replies

Posting this warning for those with small children: Last night my six year old managed to get his finger stuck in or near the rear differential of my 41999 - he is really fascinated by gears and wanted to see or make them spin. At the same time, he disconnected the corresponding L-motor from the IR receiver and attached it to the winch's power connector, and of course the battery was on, spinning the gears, wheels, etc.. After about five agonizing minutes, I managed to free his finger, but not before much wailing and tears. He is fine now, and lesson learned about machines and proper lock-out / tag-out procedures, related to his level of course. Please watch your smaller children when they are playing with PF equipped models! Certainly in my house he will need to be supervised, I am planning to get a simpler model he can build to help him learn about gears and rotating devices.

Thanks, used may be a good deal if you can get find one, I used 3rd grade math this time, and got $292, spread out over 10-12 suppliers, so add in postage, and the total maybe around $340, so EdmanZA, you are not too far off. But, I am now thinking of changing the color scheme, need to check if all of the yellow parts are available in some other color.
