    Matthias pins another arrow into his Skirmisher target and then rejoices to see Guts take over the battle, but as he watches the Kingdoms' leaders advance, his joy is lost amongst the clatter of armor and blades. With his borrowed bow he doesn't think he can even scratch the heavily armored knights moving forward, so he starts shooting horses. The ranger starts with Cassandra's horse and then the Sons' horses.

    Glup feels the surge of the Skirmishers' push, but shrugs it off. She attacks Skirmisher I. Matthias is dazed for a moment, but recovers and shoots another arrow at Skirmisher H.

    Matthias checks around and is surprised to see Benji suddenly beside him. He screws up his courage - he's in battle and the most intimidating thing is all the other, cooler heroes! - and speaks. "Benji, would you mind lending me your extra crossbow?"

    OoC: I think Matthias is supposed to be in the battle order twice? Matthias is disappointed to see Benji go to the other end of the bridge with that beautiful crossbow still strapped to his back. He refocuses on the battle and notches another two arrows aimed at Skirmisher H. Glup finds Skirmisher I right in her face and attacks.

    Fixed that for you Matthias is having trouble understanding why no one else seems to believe that. Exactly.

    Glup attacks Skirmisher B from the front row. Yep, no worries, just keepin' the RP going.

    Matthias isn't surprised to hear Guts bellow out a battle order and doesn't respond, preferring to rely on Guts' superior experience to control the battle. He decides to attack Skirmisher A twice, settling in so that if Skirmisher A falls, he can attack the next Skirmisher down the line. OoC: Please note Matthias is *Hastened* so he will likewise need to appear in the battle order twice.

    Matthias looks behind, to the west, and is relieved to see that the other heroes are starting to move out to battle lines. The gnome hears the pronouncement from a hero he doesn't know, and wonders why anyone would stay in the central tower, unable to attack the enemies? Matthias is jerked out of his pondering as the mounted paladin calls to him. Surely she doesn't mean to make him a leader for this group of experienced adventurers?! He glances around, uncertainty plain in his demeanor, and find Guts' face in the crowd of heroes near him. He hopes the big raider will focus on the battle once it begins and not turn against the party as his leadership is usurped. The gnome raises his tiny bass voice above the din. "I'm open to suggestions at any point - I just want to make it out of this alive, and if we can make peace by defending the bridge, so much the better."

    As Benji stands in the tower's door, Mattlhias notices a crossbow hanging from his back, made of smooth wood and inlaid beautifully. A real Hero's weapon, probably. The gnome looks at the unreliable rig hanging over his own shoulder and the meager borrowed bow in his hands and can't help himself. "Benji," he calls, "could I borrow that crossbow?" Here's what we have right now...     Matthias looks gratefully at Dreyrugr as he accepts the bow and holds it while putting away his crossbow on his way out of the tower. While the experienced black Knight looked a tad ... scary, he'd been helpful at need more than once on the circus adventure.

    Matthias, slightly more afraid of the upcoming battle than relieved that the arguing is finally over, steps out to the East Front and consuming a smelling salt. He motions forward in Glup's direction, and the grumpkin rogue follows, passing forward to the East Border and downing a mead.

    Matthias listens to the ceaseless argument, and finally speaks up again. "I'll go with Nerwen, to keep the Kingdoms from crossing to attack the orcs. I believe removing the paladin, by force if necessary, is the next step to peace here."

    "No, humans are no different," the gnome admits, "nor are gnomes - although my people might not fight if they could make better money otherwise. I do not expect that soldiers on the Kingdoms side of the bridge will all go home if their leader is killed. I believe our hope for peace there is King Valentino. If only he can regain control of his son and his people - which is one more reason we must remove the paladin from power." The gnome looks around at his comrades, the other Heroicans, and the two armies bent on destruction. "I have made my decision - I will not assist either side in a war; I will fight to remove the paladin and that is all."

    "I agree with Purpearl's assessment of the orcs as the more honorable of those here, but there is no such thing as right vengeance. I'm for freeing the slaves and sending this paladin to the orcs' justice, but vengeance is a step too far. Perhaps in the name of this peaceful orc leader we can persuade all sides to accept peace."

    Matthias speaks up, but with little hope. "If this is the work of but one evil advisor, can we not deliver him to the Orcs to pay for his crimes? Our party has at least some influence on King Valentino - considering we saved his life - plus one orcish clan and Guts' party seems to have a relationship with one other. Perhaps we can convince them to accept this paladin and avert war?"

    Matthias cringes to hear Baradock pick at Cinna and Cinna snap at Baradock. The gnome waits for Nelvyn's answer, hoping that whatever the group decides they will stay together - he can't stand the idea of fighting his party-mates if it comes to that. Meanwhile, he fumbles in his bag for a bottle of mead, which he drinks. Buoyed by liquid resolve, he speaks. "I think it's best for all of us if we stick together. We're involved in things a lot bigger than us, and I can't see that any side is wrong or right. As Boris' `friend` noted, no one here is even minded or reasonable on the Kingdoms side, and I can't imagine it's any different on the Orcish. Let's just try to get out of this with our heads still attached to our necks!"

    Matthias looks to each end of the bridge and fights feelings of despair. His eyes and thoughts go to Baradock, wondering who might go separate ways now. Desperately he wishes that peace was possible, that all their effort might not be in vain. "Which way?"

    "I hope that Grishnod will find it in himself and his people to become supple like a living tree - green wood burns little compared to dry, brittle timber. Fire is just below the surface everywhere we go and I cannot help but feel that when Bastala wakes up fire will bubble over, and regardless of the outcome the nations of Baltarok will need to deal with the consequences." Matthias looks surprised to hear his own deep voice as he realizes his thoughts have been aired aloud. He turns to Boris, Cinna, and the King. "I think there is no errand so urgent as to return King Valentino," here the gnome gives a slight bow of his head, "to his nation that he might prepare whatever envoys are possible to stave off total war with the Orcs and Fire Nords."

    Hooray fights and heads on pikes! We appreciate your support! The Baltarok quests have been just as much fun as they look. Many thanks to Zepher, CallMePie, and especially Waterbrick Down from Matthias and myself for hosting! It's been a great quest experience to start with here in Heroica.

    Matthias accepts the Remedy from Cinna and listens to Purpearl while he munches a growshroom and a level-up mushroom.

    Matthias ponders, rubbing the new growth of his beard. "Is not steel stronger than stone, for is is forged hard and yet can still flex? Isn't live wood stronger than dead dry boards, since the life within makes it supple? This is a test of strength, and if you choose to be strong as stone, water and wind will eat you away in time. If you choose to be strong as steel or flowering branches, you and your people will bear the weight of change without being broken."

    Matthias uses a Remedy on Cinna from the back row.

    Matthias has his crossbow loaded and aimed as he waits, unsure of what to do next. Attack? Wait? Run?

    Matthias uncertainly readies his bow, but hears Cinna's incantations and stays his hand. He does nothing from the back row.

    Matthias lets out a tiny bass "Whooop!" of joy as the spore cluster goes down. As he turns to the Myconid Hulk, it towers over him, and he is just the tiniest bit... afraid. The gnome turns to Cinna: "Can you attack that... thing? I'll heal Purpearl instead!" Matthias uses a Grand Potion on Purpearl.
