  1. I’m also disappointed by the dog choice. Someone can correct me, but my understanding of Marie Antoinette’s dogs is a bit different. That, historically, they can show she had two when she left Vienna, and was asking for a third called a “mops”. Mops as a breed were basically the 18th century pugs (German/Dutch mastiffs) and are littered in period paintings of the aristocracy. Having owned pugs myself, it’s distressing that Lego missed their chance to make a non-Friends pug and chose instead a breed that didn’t even really exist yet outside of Mexico (at the time).

    MOC — Coastal Lighthouse

Thanks to you both for the kind comments. I’ll definitely take a look at the Flickr option and will hopefully update soon. Thanks!

    MOC — Coastal Lighthouse

Not sure how to do this—I’ve never posted anything like this on here before. But I just wanted to share since it’s my first real moc. Everything has full interior etc, and I can try to post more photos later, too. Hope you like it and always appreciate feedback. And it appears the new official Lego lighthouse will use some similar techniques — though this took me a long time so I have mixed feelings about the timing! :). Thanks!
  4. Not to change gears, but has there been any more info on the rumored creator Viking ship?

    Mr. Gold guidance...

First, I apologize if this isn't posted in the appropriate place. If there is somewhere else I could try and ask this (either here or another site), please just let me know. I rarely post online, but have always loved coming here and don't really know where else I might be able to get advice on this topic. Basically, I am trying to get advice regarding where/how someone might suggest selling a Mr. Gold. I've been fortunate to have found one originally and have kept it the last several years, but am at the point where I don't think I can justify holding onto it. I wrote years ago about being conflicted about it, and really do feel ambivalent about owning a few pieces of plastic that has such presumed value (however much I've loved building my collection). Now, I'm having to move and could really use some extra funds to defray expenses. Obviously, I know I could try and sell on bricklink, but I've never really sold online and have no seller's history. I'm not trying to be greedy, and don't expect it to go for quite as much as what's posted there now, but still know that it would be important to establish a trusted sale, which may mean bank transfer, insurance, etc? I'm just a little lost. And yeah, it's still in the inner clear bag (the gold series 10 bag has a small slit in the back to open), and it has the certificate with code etc. Again, I am truly sorry if this isn't appropriate, but if anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much -- and here's to looking forward to series 20!

2018 City Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Has there been any hint of new pictures for the people pack (60202)?

    Future Castle Sets?

Ideally, I would prefer a new piece that’s somewhere between a BURP and a wall panel. A large-scale panel with a few stud and/or SNOT attachment points that can be used for either architectural or textural detail. As I imagine it, it would allow customization and playability while still maintaining low piece counts and price points. (I’ve also long wanted a better tree trunk option for similar reasons).

LEGO Ideas: 21310 Old Fishing Store (Fall 2017)

Given Lego's abandonment of so much of what brought me out of my dark ages (Vikings and Indiana jones started it, then was all-in with non-licensed collectible minifigures, kingdoms, imperial flagship, modular), I haven't been this child-like and giddy waiting for a set in a long time. The detail and design work is incredible, but there's something even more appealing about the thematic feel to it. There's an adventurous sense of realism to it. Something that's most always missing from Lego nautical-based sets. It's not just piece count and detail. It's a gap filler in a way (why has Lego never done a proper town/city sailboat, lighthouse, etc? These things are often limited afterthoughts to other themes and get short shrift.) it's actually inspired me to start a new lighthouse moc -- I think I've found a workable solution to building a tower that's both round and slopes in like a classical lighthouse. It's actually my first non-historical moc in 20 years. So thanks to all involved for designing, voting for, and approving it. Can't wait to build it.
  9. I almost never comment, but feel this is pretty important. Like so many, I grew up with classic castle, inheriting the first sets from an older sibling and taking over with forestmen and the black knights era. My "dark ages" took me through the end of the 90s and it took Vikings to bring me out of it. What seems missing in these discussions, and what Lego seems to no longer value, is that imagination is more than just throwing bricks together and blowing things up. Sometimes, it means connecting to new subject matter through play. For me, Lego was the catalyst for my love of history, and the hours I spent building castles and western forts and pirate ships genuinely fed a passion that has endured into my adulthood and informed my approach to the world and the work that I do. I really do owe so much of that to little plastic bricks. Which makes all of this distressing. Nexo Knights aren't, in themselves, some grand evil, but they are another symptom of a broader disease -- Lego has clearly shifted away from being a medium through which children can explore ideas that connect to the real world. Creativity, for all of Lego's marketing to the contrary, sometimes does require context, even at the risk of not appealing to a particular region or target market. Like so many of you, I am a father myself now, and it's particularly tough knowing just what my young daughter is missing. It's a bit sad to think of what Lego COULD do given the molds and colors available today, not just for castle, but for long-dreamed-of themes like Romans, etc. how easy could it be to develop a time travelers theme and hit so many incredible areas...

    Creator Expert 10252 Volkswagen Beetle

Yes, it's a great way to satiate those who'd love the old Model Team sets to come back. I do wish there was a way to make them to scale with the technic figures. I love those. In any event, VW and Lego have obviously done well together and this is an easy buying decision. They have a lot of iconic vehicles they could still make if they can secure more licenses. I think it's time for a proper jeep (CJ) or maybe even to align with Jeep's 2018 model year updates. (I'd absolutely love a Willys.....!)
  11. i already posted on the other thread (slightly more realistic guesses), but here are some wanted figures: 1. Frontier explorer/trapper. beaver/fur cap and musket. Or sextant and new compass piece. or new animal piece. there's a lot you could do. 2. wildlife photographer. outdoorsy clothing with camera and new animal. While I think a deer would be well-received, probably too big. 3. new astronaut. this is a common guess, but i'd like to see an update of a realistic astronaut. and frankly, make him 60s Russian (orange suits, big chrome helmet) 4. snake charmer. turban and flute (printed rod piece?) with new snake sitting up in basket or barrel piece 5. Mongolian. Everyone seems to want this. 6. I still want an old-school turn of last century style politician with a printed "Soap" box to stand on. 7. Satyr (as above. Making this would be totally doable and fit the mythical theme well. 8. Angel with newer Chima wings and new attachment piece. Maybe using the robot stud bracket. Angels have been done before in xmas themed merchandise and they cross religious traditions. 9. Buddhist monk. This just has to get made eventually. Maybe with bald piece and glasses and walking stick. Or a lotus flower :) 10. I want a real Viking. I know this won't happen, but I want one. Realistic helmet and not the Wagnerian fantasy style from the theme. 11. I'd say Bigfoot like the guy above, but we just now have the Abom.Snmn, and we had the gorilla suit, so i'm not sure how it'd be different. It also takes something away from these characters (like the cyclops and minotaur) when they're normal-sized figures. 12. Fly fisherman with pole, new fish, net?, and new hat with ear flaps. 13. dart player with syringe sized dart and printed round tile board 14. Arabian Bedouin 15. Zulu warrior with new shield 16. Admiral Nelson-style captain ( i could keep going but for now it's making me a bit sad at how unrealistic most of my list are. ^I just saw the moderator's comment directly above mine. My apologies. Feel free to remove if you would like
  12. ^Yeah I know. I guess I had read a debate above about whether Mr. Gold would be in series 11 and just put it all in one post. Sorry, it was my second posting on here in three years.
  13. Alright, so I'm not sure where to post this, but I was hoping for some help. And if it makes this post marginally relevant: I'm guessing all the Mr. Golds would have had to be packaged in Series 10 packs and would have shipped. If unsold Series 10 packs return to Lego (if, for example, certain retailers have resale contracts, etc.) then MAYBE Lego would identify them and repackage them in Series 11, but I highly doubt it. I do, however, have a bit of a personal problem with the Mr. Golds. While I never cared about them when I was buying Series 10, I actually managed to find one. Completely by chance, I grabbed a singe bag from a half-filled box in a local TRU and, after feeling it out, realized it was a Mr. Gold. I have mixed feelings about my options and was hoping for some advice. First, let me say that although I left my dark ages a few years ago, I'm not exactly avid as an AFOL. I'm married, and have a two year old girl, so I'm not exactly looking to spend hundreds of dollars a month. Yet one of the products I do continue to buy are the CMFs. I was buying a handful from each series at first, and then the wife decided she liked the idea of having them all, so at this point, I have them all (except the British Olympic ones which we decided don't count). So now I have a Mr. Gold and am forced to reflect on my relationship to Legos (yes, I will always call them Legos and not Lego -- I grew up this way and I'm not changing it. Connecting to our childhoods is part of the point...right?) Anyway...I opened the gold bag but not the clear bag, and obviously have a few options. Since I have every CMF so far, it's nice to think that I could just open it, enjoy the fact that I was lucky enough to find one, put it on a shelf with the others, and pass a complete collection on to my daughter/kids someday. I could sell it immediately. Or I could hang on to it a bit, hope it appreciates, and sell it later. Let me be clear: I hate the commercialization of this product. I hate that I'm missing the Cafe Corner from my Modulars street because it's in the thousands on Bricklink. Mostly, I hate what corporate delusions Lego have had lately thinking that collectibility is why so many of us loved their products to begin with...Mr. Gold and Azog and convention exclusives, etc., but also whole-cloth pandering like Ninjago and Chima and, yep, Star Wars. I remember the age when I was excited for a new space line to come out because I wanted to build a rocket and design robots and explore planets that only existed in my head. Or build a castle wall that would only be breached if I had enough pieces to build a siege tower tall enough. My play with Legos gave me a great gift as a child that I remain unable to repay: it catalyzed my love of space and science and history. That's why I call them Legos and why I hate the little bag of golden plastic on my shelf. So yeah, I've gotten back into Legos and my wallet's never been the same (thanks Vikings..). And I have collected a few things..for enjoyment, for the fun of sharing this part of my childhood with my wife and daughter (It's amazing how much better the set ideas are for Duplo...and I love that I could give her my old red Duplo bunny sack). And I will inevitably buy Series 11 too...who wouldn't want the Tiki warrior? But how do I justify keeping my Mr. Gold? It's a couple of inches of plastic. It's also a possible two car payments, or a down payment on a vacation, or a nice bump in my daughter's college fund. Not to mention the fact that I have no idea how to sell it. I've used Bricklink to buy a few things, but have never sold on ebay. I'm sure someone would buy it if I posted it, though I guess not having a seller's history would hurt a bit. I know some people have donated theirs, or aunctioned it for charity, so maybe that's an option. In any event, I'm disappointed with the company that's always meant so much. I'm happy, of course, that they're successful. I just wish they still made ads like the vintage one I saw posted several weeks ago: a smiling young girl holding an awkwardly built Lego model and the words "What it is is beautiful." Seeing the old ad again made me so happy to remember the real value of these toys, to think about what they mean to my little girl when her Duplo towers are as tall as she is and she laughs the way only children can. Whatever Mr. Gold is worth, and whatever it's ultimate fate, it'll never be worth as much as the lunar baseplates I called home so many years ago, or the final block on my daughter's beautiful Duplo towers.
