No, there hasn't been one and it indeed has been suggested before. I'd make an effort to participate if there was an animal contest but I'm not sure how popular it would be... often when there's a contest themed outside of typical Technic builds,  they tend not to be hugely popular while themes that include stuff you could buy in an official set (vehicles, construction equipment) get a lot of attention.

Yup, that's exactly my concern with running such a contest.

Monster Jam truck idea, does that mean everyone builds a Megaladon or Gravedigger () ? or preferably just 'build your own custom 4x4x4' with certain tyres (me prefer the openness of the later)

Another idea that might be popular, but again it is car themed (have entries been declining lately?), is build, or rather replicate, a Hot Wheels car in Technic, one of the crazy Hot Wheels of course not just a real life Hot Wheels. Plenty to choose from over the years.

So no contest this summer?

Yeah, let's start one. I even have a prize for it. Will start one next week.

But I am not entirely sure which one yet.

The monster truck contest with the different kinds of tractor tires would be cool!

This really is a contest heavily relying on the suspension design, which is a thing we didn't really enforce in any contest I believe. :-)

And as said, it will also be a contest for both beginners and pros as you can choose your tire size and therefor model size. I don't know if it's possible, but maybe we could even vote for 3 different categories according to size? Not sure if it's a good idea... Just because mostly bigger models got more votes when there was no size restriction...

The 3 categories are:

Small (56 x 26)

Medium (81 x 35)

Big (107x44R)

*Edit: MOCs of both real machines and also imaginary ones should be allowed. Electronics are allowed in the "big" category.

Understandable, but sad. These contests are perfect opportunities to get builders out of their confort zones. But I understand that most (if not almot all) builders don't like to get out of their confort zones.

Monster Truck sounds cool and doable.

Yup. But it's probably the same reason TLG is only selling Technic cars nowadays.

How about instead of prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd places, we do prizes for 1st place of each category (small tire, medium tire, large tire)?

I only have one prize for this contest, which makes it very easy

Or not easy if we do three categories lol

We could do a combination of alternate builds and monster truck.  Pick a set, any set, and create a monster truck out of it.  All pieces need to come from the set, except tires.  And of course, the monster truck needs to be a different vehicle from the set...can't have a Dom's Charger on tractor wheels or whatever.

Hmm then you need a set with many suspension  components... which completely limits the selection again. Not a good idea in my opinion. Completely hinders good ideas for new solutions.

Would also lead to massive confusion and arguing I guess. How different is different...?

Nearly the whole current Technic lineup is cars at the moment (terrible if you ask me); so anything non-car for the contest and I'm probably in.

I'm in for a free monster truck contest. A B model type, I would skip that.

Yup, I have an idea...

When can we expect details @Jim? :-)

Lol. Good question.

Thanks for the reminder. As usual one week before a holiday always busy.

It will be the Monster Truck Madness, so you can start planning. Details will be posted in a couple of days.

Sweet! I probably need a couple weeks to finish my current MOC, after which I should be all free for contest mode!

Am I going to need to go out and buy some of the 56mm tractor tires? Somehow I still don't have any of those

I do have two monster trucks that I’ve wanted to build for a long time, but personally, I don't think Lego and monster trucks go well together. The biggest reason is the tires, which are the core element of the currently planned competition; Lego tires are too thin compared to real monster truck tires.

Also, since one of the two vehicles I want to build fits regular tires much better than tractor tires, I effectively have only one model option.

I don't think (hope) that the topic will be as strict as some official monster truck league. More like "something with 4 oversized wheels and a body that resembles cars". So "monster truck" with a more layman/causal meaning.

Will there be 3 different categories for 3 tire sizes?

Would we then also have a large, small, and medium truck?
