Good job! It looks just like it did in the film.

I think LEGO should have made the Water Gate set as a smaller, $25 set with Tauriel, Kili (in barrel), an orc, and Bolg. The build would have been modular, with pins on both ends. Then it could be connected to MEA walls. I would have liked that.

I also think TLG should have made a Thranduil'd Throne set. It would've been $12 and included Thranduil and the orc he interrogates (Fimbul?). Legolas would be a nice addition, but TLG hasn't put more than 2 figs in a $12 set yet. This set would have included the little platform with Thranduil's throne. This way Thranduil could be taken out of MEA and replaced with a third orc.

That actually would of been a great set and would of fixed MEA having to include Thranduil. The only issue is Lego might shy away from a set where the main action is an orc getting decapitated.

Yeah, not much action. TLG did Riddles for the Ring though, not much action there either.

I plan to build some "set style" MOCs to show what LEGO could've done for this wave.

So far I have built the 3 smaller sets. I must say, Laketown is the only "interesting" model to build so far, in that the others just felt like a mash of parts here and there. All of the minifigs are excellent, the parts for each set are good too.

Wrong thread. (This is Lego discussion, not movie discussion.)

Re: Your Elf Water Gate

Hello, this is my first post on here, although I have been lurking for some time now. I really like your designs, and I have only recently considered trying to buy the individual pieces I would need to build these for myself. I noticed on the Lego Shop at Home site that one cannot purchase the 1 X 2 bricks that actually look like bricks. Am I right? If so, do the pick a brick walls at Lego stores ever have them? Also, does the program you use to create these designs generate instructions for how to build them? Or at least show the inventory of parts I would need to build it? Thank you in advance, and keep up the good work! Your Dol Guldur design looks awesome as well. I hope you can put your designs on CUUSOO, as I would support them, and I think many others would as well. In fact, I fully expect if the Middle Earth lines end, CUUSOO will explode with MOCs of all the sets people wish had been made, and hopefully we will get them that way.

A few things.

1) This post does not reference the LEGO sets at all.

2) This post contains spoilers for those who have not had the chance to see the movie.

3) For those of you in parts of the world were it is December 25, merry Christmas!

I believe it is the policy of LEGO pab that it would'n include any 'specific' parts, especcially not from franchised lines. Not 100% sure on it though, but I believe I read that somewhere.

Same with the minifig 'tables' to create your own models

Darth_Mor, you might also try Bricklink. You can find sellers there that sell any type of brick you want. I have never found Pick A Brick to have most of the bricks I need to build anything. The Shop@Home does have quite a bit of selection but it is still limited.

Returning to topic, I like the brick selection in this latest Hobbit wave. I doubt I will keep any of the builds intact but I was impressed with the longer tan bricks in the Mirkwood Elf Army. I think this is what is important to remember about the LEGO sets. It is not just that they are designed for kids. They are not. They have a wide variety of points trying to appeal to many groups. Most of us like the minifig selection. Others appreciate the builds while others the existing pieces in a new color (red leaves for example). The tan pieces will be helpful for the next time I try to build Edoras.

The only LEGO sets I plan on keeping intact are Bagend, Helm's Deep, and the Medieval Market Village. When I buy Orthanc, it will join that list.

I actually found these at a Lego store PAB wall for the first time about 2 weeks ago. But yes, Bricklink is your friend for this sort of venture.

What they mean by that is Bick a Brick and build a minifig will never include parts that are specific to licensed IP or characters. So you will never find Darth Caders Helmet or torso there, or you will never find cockpits in Star Wars printed patterns, etc.

Now the masonry bricks are not a licensed specific part. They have been used in a very broad range of sets from LotR's to Ninjago to Friends etc. but they are a more recent part. I think it often takes some time (years) for new parts to trickle down to PAB. They are probably using the masonry bricks almost as fast as they can make them, in sets, and have not built up a sufficient surplus stock.

I just got The Wizard Battle, The Council of Elrond and Battle at the Black Gate for Christmas!

Also got £50 so I now have enough to buy Orthanc when I go back to University! xD

Merry Christmas everyone, and may I say what a lego-ish one its been for me, Ive built both dol goldur sets, they're fantastic, especially their minifigures, now Ive just got to build the remaining hobbit sets and some other lego sets not related to this theme, I hope everyone has a great day. :classic:

I enjoyed the build of Dol Guldur Battle, it's not the best set but it's not bad. I've picked up a couple more of DGA at 30% off from Myer's boxing day sale.

3 Beorns now, what to do?

Sit on them for a year or two until DGA is retired, then resell on eBay for a modest profit :P

I bought all the TDOS sets for myself and my brother for Christmas; plus an extra MEA and 16 Laketown polybags. Have not built Bard's Riverboart Chase yet but Dol Guldur Battle was a truly surprising set: on the box it looks pretty crappy, but it's a solid size and the build is good one. Even without DGA latched on it's a pretty good display piece with some cool features. My dream to make DGB and DGA better is to get a TABA set, 'Dol Guldur Rescue' or something like that's only a tall ruined tower of Dol Guldur with a battledamaged Gandalf, Galadriel, armored Elrond, and fiery Sauron - that could be attached to DGA and DGB to flesh out Dol Guldur even more.

I had something of an amusing thought process while building Dol Guldur Battle - what a mad, mad world we are living in: when Lord of the Rings came out in theatres, we dreamed of ONE Hobbit movie. If anyone even dared to envision Hobbit Lego, it would have been Bag End or Smaug, perhaps Goblintown or Laketown, at the most. Dol Guldur was a relatively obscure location in the Tolkien mythos, and it was a lot of fun to see what the video game designers imagined for it in The Battle For Middle Earth II. I remember thinking, "it would have been cool if this ever could have appeared in any of the movies." And now, cut to 2013, where the flagship set of the Hobbit Lego wave is a battle in Dol Guldur with Azog and Radagast. Crazy times.

I agree. I was expecting DGB for christmas but what I wasn't expecting was a really really cool set. I was most excited for the figs but I really enjoyed the build. I even put all the stickers on. :sadnew:

Precisely what I was thinking, and I'm pretty sure we'll see something like that with the next wave. Though we might get another Saruman, since he's supposed to get a lot of action in TABA.

Anyone found any good solutions for Bolg? I'm using Azog's torso and legs, with Grima's (angry) head and I might paint a Goblin baldcap thing (and put his little head brace).

Bolg will come in the TABA wave for sure, so I'll wait patiently until then. There's no proper way to capture his unique torso and head appearance with any existing elements.

Yeah, but for now this is what I use:
