Hi,

Hopefully we can pin this thread, this thread will be for members to try and substitute parts that LEGO does not make with different LEGO substitutions, so that we can build 3rd party sets with LEGO parts!.

Of course, one substitution may not work for every set we're trying to build, so one part can have several substitutions.

However, a substitution might also be necessary because of a LEGO color incompatibility even if LEGO makes the same part.

I think we should also have a standard [heading] for replies that contain the following:

  • The part ID or element ID (otherwise you write [UNKNOWN] since some 3rd party brands annoyingly don't include the inventory in their instructions or they have the element ID not the part ID.
  • The brand
  • The set ID (generally only needed if we're querying how to fix a problem when building a set)

And then in a new line, the LEGO part ID's used.

I will do some simple examples in a reply below, because I need space in this main post for the index links: (note this can be for SYSTEM or TECHNIC style parts, those 2 categories are the best way we have to categorize stuff I think).

Lastly, I think general discussion about substitutions for 3rd party parts should go in this thread in order to keep this thread clean, therefore off-topic replies in this thread will hopefully get moved to the general discussion thread :classic:

Substitutions Index:
CADA JX41930001 - 3x11 panel with 9L cutout on one side - SNIPE
CADA JX41610004 - 5x11 panel with 9L cutout on two sides  - SNIPE
CADA JJ20760002 - 3x5 half frame - SNIPE
CADA JJ20770003 - 5x11 H-frame half - SNIPE
CADA JH00600001 - 10L axle with stop - SNIPE
CADA JJ70820001 - 3x3 T-beam half - SNIPE

TODO - Does anyone know if I can have a link that jumps to a certain portion of a reply? using quotes did not work.

I have just used part IDs and not element IDs for the LEGO parts so that we can substitute different colors of the same CADA part. I don't know if CADA have part IDs somewhere, but in the instructions, they're element IDs, since the same part but in dark bluish gray is JX41930003 instead of JX41930001.

I also did not say where the pins should go, because its fairly obvious, and you can choose based on what works best for the exact set. The brackets after part IDs indicate that its a quantity.

If a digital model file of a substitution is helpful, feel free to include a download link to said file.

A helpful topic, thank ye! As I have no experience, the question does arise - would this work for old LEGO colours too? For instance, 3x2 wedge plate in brown, which is fairly rare:

As for the replies - on the right hand top corner of the post the three dots should allow you to copythe link to the said post, I believe so. :pir-grin:

  • SNIPE changed the title to LEGO part substitutions for 3rd party sets
