PossumPatrol Posted June 9 Posted June 9 This tank engine MOC is loosely based on the Class 111 designed by Barton-Wright in the 1870s. It's powered by a 9V motor in the trailing bogie with a working headlamp. I went through several design iterations before finally settling on a balance of sturdiness and detail that I was happy with. The locomotive in action going around a curve. The lamp code is for a branch line freight train, but don't report me to the Fat Controller! The bunker has substantial overhang on curves, but it clears all the scenery on my layout! Delivering the mail. Quote
Feuer Zug Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Nice small tank engine. Good amount of details between the locomotive and the carriages. I do like the crossing gates. Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 9 Posted June 9 As I said on Flickr: Nice work on the engine and coaches. Also, those crossing gates are brilliantly done! Quote
LL1982 Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Nicely done and that 9v motor is well hidden. Indeed a good mix between a solid model and details. Always a trade off between loads of details but fragile and a more balanced build. Quote
idlemarvel Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Nice loco and the scenary is great too. At first I thought it was a conversion of the new Vintage Steam Train! Quote
sebulba56 Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Nice tank engine ! I see you got a lot of overhang on the trailing axle. Why not mouting the two driving axles on a turntable, or make on driving axle blind ? Those 2 methods could allow the trailing axle on one pivot instead of two. Quote
PossumPatrol Posted June 11 Author Posted June 11 @zephyr1934 Thanks! 23 hours ago, sebulba56 said: Nice tank engine ! I see you got a lot of overhang on the trailing axle. I considered making the driving axles articulated, but decided I'd rather keep them fixed to the frame like the real engine. That also allowed me to have the side tanks low enough to cover the top of the driving wheels. Here you can see how the trailing bogie connects, as well as my decidedly non-purist solution for lighting. It's kind of hard to see, but I've added some controls and gauges inside the cab. The driver's footplate sits above the pin on top of the motor. He has an opening at the back of the cab to get coal from the bunker. Here are some more angles. Quote
Daiman Posted June 12 Posted June 12 Alwaysgreat to see a new engine build, lots and lots of great and complex solutions to getting the colours and angles correct. Hats off to you. Quote
Cheeseyfeet and Oreo Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Spiffing little loco with a fantastic paint job! Muy bueno Quote
PossumPatrol Posted June 15 Author Posted June 15 @Daiman @Cheeseyfeet and Oreo Thank you! One minor update: I reduced the height of the bunker by one plate so that it is now in line with the top of the side tanks (not counting the coal rails). Quote
LL1982 Posted June 15 Posted June 15 Looks good. And I liked seeing all those intermediate pictures of how you handled the light and articulation. Wish I had the skills for custom lights. That hub should be able to do 4 lights somehow from one outlet to actually make a train light up properly. Now that you lowered the bunker I would thinker away at making the red square the same height as the red rectangle. Quote
Daiman Posted June 15 Posted June 15 I like the modifications and I agree with @LL1982 about the second markings...not asking for much are we Quote

And now that you've got me thinking about it, I won't be able to let it rest LOL. I'm actually brainstorming ways to do the opposite and make the rectangle on the side tanks taller. Hopefully, I'll be able to eliminate the funky upside-down brackets at the bottom while still clearing the wheel flanges. Thanks for the suggestion and I'll post pictures once I work it out! Quote
PossumPatrol Posted June 17 Author Posted June 17 @Daiman @LL1982 Thanks to your suggestion, I think I have a much-improved engine. Not only does the lining on the side tanks line up with that of the bunker, but there is now room for a 1x1 round tile to represent the builder's plate. Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 With the lining matching on the front and back, it now looks even more fantastic @PossumPatrol! Keep up the good work! Quote
