After much speculation, SpongeBob has finally been confirmed by reliable sources to return in September with 2 sets:

  • 11386 Conch Street (1794 pcs, $220)
  • 40858 SpongeBob Brickheadz

11386 is said to include the three houses, a boat, and a jellyfish field plus minifigs of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward. Gary is also featured.

So glad to see the return of the final theme on my wishlist after HP, LotR, Indy, and PotC :excited: Fingers crossed for the Krusty Krab next year!

And yes, I will update my profile pic :snicker:

I hope this set will be all you were looking for.
If this set is going to be a real banger i’m afraid my wife needs it.

I hope it'll be cool and all, but it's wild to me to see even Spongebob of all the things go the way of the single expensive set at a time License.

Yeah none of the Bikini Bottom sets before were very good, but 3818 Bikini Bottom Undersea Party did what it needed to with a couple of ok builds for the houses, a great Minifigure selection and a decent price.

Do a fans of various random properties really want to shell out $200+ for the pleasure of having a LEGO representation of their favourite theme? I guess the answer is yes, and I'm in the minority who does not.

I don't think you are in the minority that does not, but the majority that does not. But that is the point of marketing high value sets for niche properties. The fan bases are relatively limited so they aim to go for smaller numbers of high value sets rather than larger numbers of low value sets. I read somewhere that the audience for Spongebob is about 25% 18-34 year old without kids, with likely similar numbers of other adults with kids. They could aim sets at children but that would mean more small sets need to be sold and they could also cannibalise sales of their other sets aimed at kids. So they aim for high value sales to a minority of adults.

Personally, I’m glad we’re only getting an Icons set for two reasons:

  1. I don’t have enough shelf space for an entire theme :snicker:
  2. After all the awesome Ideas projects I’ve seen, I prefer an 18+ approach to the buildings. Don’t get me wrong, the old theme was neat, but after seeing these designs, I really don’t wanna go back.

Ok let me rephrase a little - I'm not mad that this will be a one off nor that it'll be in Icons. It's just about size and scale for me. If it's truly a "display piece", why can't we get a miniaturized diorama of the houses that still comes with the characters to put out front, for like $60-80?

Instead they always try to have it both ways, where it still functions as a toy while also pressing the nostalgia buttons for adults, and we end up with these $200+ sets.

I guess what I'm saying is, it'd be great if LEGO caters to adults who also want some nostalgic properties but can't shell out a bunch of money, but that's just not what they do most of the time.

I get where you’re coming from. I’m sure the set will be good but I wish it wasn’t locked behind a $200+ price point. I think a miniature diorama of all the buildings - the houses, the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket, Sandy’s treehouse, Glove World etc. similar to the miniature Diagon Alley they did for Harry Potter would have been pretty cool as well.

That said, I am excited at where the theme could go if these sell well. I’m guessing they’ll do the Krusty Krab next.

Conch Street will be a big seller, and the next year they’ll release the the Krusty Krab as they’ll know that’ll sell well

Because if they did a small version with all the characters and a big version with all the characters, then sales of the big version will be impacted.

I find it curious how similar this set sounds to the original 2006 set since it includes all the same features (all three houses, a boat, and a jellyfish area) and minifigs. Sounds like a deliberate choice to me, maybe to elicite nostalgia or because the designer grew up with that set, or both

The only thing I‘m not too fond of is the rather low number of minifigs. Sure, there will likely be a Krusty Krab further down the line, but this would‘ve been a good opportunity for Sandy or DoodleBob. Then again, the core cast isn‘t exactly huge (unlike the Simpsons for instance), so they can still easily include them in upcoming sets ^^

I think they know how much the Krusty Krab would sell, where as if they did the Krusty Krab first and not Conch Street, they could be worried Conch Street won’t as well as they would think. That’s my theory

I think Sandy would be introduced in either a Krusty Krab set or Sandys Treehouse.
I would really like to see a new mould for Plankton too.

It’s gonna be like 2006 all over again to me!

Almost forgot about that, the 20th anniversary of the first wave surely plays a role in the set essentially being a direct remake

What I‘m the most curious about is whether they will introduce new pieces for the characters or resurrect the old moulds. I wouldn‘t mind if SpongeBob’s torso and Squidward‘s head returned, but I‘m certainly hoping for a new leg piece for Squidward and a new headpiece for Patrick, maybe specialised arms too! SpongeBob absolutely needs dual-moulded arms and legs, and Gary should have printed eyes this time. As the nanofigs prove, they should be able to apply printing to the cherry piece! :sweet:

Looking at the new Mario minifig gives me hope that Squidward‘s eye print will be better than before. The gap between the eyes and nose always bothered me with the 2009 headpiece (still better than the hilariously horrendous 2006 version, mind!)

I'm really excited for this. I had the original set and I was always bothered by how bare the interiors of the houses were, so I'm actually really happy to see a more detailed version of these builds.

Can't say I'm too surprised to see this directed towards adults. I think the Area X SpongeBob sets definitely show there's a large amount of adults that drop serious cash on SpongeBob products, so it makes sense that Lego would want a piece of that action.

I just hope Lego can outdo Area X. SpongeBob's house I imagine they'll outdo them on (since they sort of gave up and just went with a giant molded piece to create the exterior), but Lego is going to have a hard time besting their version of Squidwards house.
