Thanks to this topis now i spent like 800EUR ordering 200 falcon knights + commanders... my wallet is crying.

I would at least have waited for a nice GWP to order them (and not all at once anyways. Aside from that, there is no such thing as having to many Falcon Knights - though they surely demand a big castle for them now ;).

Normal GWPs usually don´t leak that early, so sadly no. I just wait and see and then decide whether the GWP is worth ordering something with it.

Aside from the early days when for a few months of coming in and quickly going out of stock, I think BF minifig parts haven't been out of stock for a few years now.

Even if it did, there are 1000s on BL at little more (and with LEGO's recent price increase often less) than the PAB price. I imagine the early days were dominated by resellers buying out the stock, as large numbers were appearing on BL and some customers were paying silly prices. While those that waited were soon able to buy from PAB.

Castle minifigs were always more expensive than Space & Pirates, due to the additional accessories and desire to collect en-masse. I recall getting Space dudes for $1 or $2 on Bricklink back in the day, Castle was $5 for the desirable ones at the time.

Now everyone is wanting to get in the army-build game. You can forget about vintage stuff, and even the semi-vintage (10-20 year old stuff) is priced at premium premium - if you can find it.

Army building is expensive. Thats why I limit my armies to 12-14 figs.

Thats pretty low ye... I usually aimed atleast 40... so you have like 30 foot soldiers + some archers + Captain/Commander etc... But now i got myself 200 Falcons + COmmander + 5 Captains... my biggest army.

Platoon-sized is sufficient if you ask me. Real-life medieval armies were usually an amalgation of called-upon knights (with each their own colors and heraldry) and their retainers anyway, and the typical castle wouldn't have a garrison numbering in the high hundreds.

Yeh you are probably correct... I just think it looks better when you field like 40-50 units...I mean when i try to recreate a castle siege, I usually want atleast like 100 soldiers besieging the 30 defenders or so... else it feels "empty" :)

I like to build up the two sides from multiple different factions, generally with a similar color scheme (green, blue, etc). That creates variety and it allows for smaller armies per faction.

A platoon generally has 30-50 members, so you're good there.

Luckily for us, the current crop of Lion Knights has three different shield versions, so its always possible (and perhaps with a different type/colored helmet) to make that the difference between Knight families.

Falcons are a bit harder for that. But I managed to assemble a handful of Silver Falcons, and about a dozen of the old Falcon soldiers are still around from back in my youth.

It depends what you want to do. If you want a detailed vignette of a battle in action, then 12 soldiers vs 12 soldiers on a 32x32 stud area is often plenty. Whereas if you like to line up formations row after row on multiple 48x48 baseplates then you'll need a lot more.

Yeh obviously a vignette will be hard to sport much more than 24 figures anyway :)

When I talk army building I usually think on like a set (Lion Knights Castle) being besieged by the Black Falcons.... and for such "diorama" you would probably want atleast like 150-200 figures vs like 40 or so defenders...

40 defenders wouldn fit in LKC IMO. This is nonsens with respect… Its enough to have 20 defenders against lets say 50-70 attackers and it will be great diorama all the same. Besides, 150 Black Falcon with same torso… its just ugly.

Again it depends what you want to show. If you want to show the building, you don't need all that many soldiers to attack it. If you want to show off the size of the army you almost lose the build. At a show over 10 years ago there was a guy displaying a Helms Deep MOC and he had bought about 400 orcs to attack it. I had a chat with him near the end of they day and he was disappointed that nearly all of the comments and questions he got from the public were about the size, the cost and the time taken to pose all the figures and very little about the build.

I agree, but that is if you make a MOC... I am more talking in the direction of wanting to depict a siege of enemy army on the specific official LEGO set (Like Lions Knights Castle) with barely any MOCing done, apart from adding surroundings with trees/bushes etc...

Having 20 soldiers besieging a castle of 10 defenders to me looks poor, but maybe its just me... :)

To have a believable defense of the Lion Castle you'd need at least adjust the watermill part of the castle. Half the outer walls there don't have a proper place to pose soldiers.

Yeh that would be another issue indeed :)

I used to size my armies according to how many foot soldiers I could fit in the castle. Mounted knights were extra.

These days, castles are so rare and there are now many factions that don't even have a castle set, so army size is more up in the air.

Vintage figs have certainly soared in value. When I started collecting from bricklink and eBay I’d have a £1.50 limit per figure. Including some form of weapon etc.

Same with the castles themselves. Kick myself now I didn’t get some of the black knight/dragon knights castles. Didnt as they were all a little over £100.

see them on for £300+ now…

As an adult I was originally only collecting Space, but when Kingdoms came out, I went on ebay & Bricklink to buy all the old castles (except the sucky one with stickers from 2006), and the most expensive was Vladek's from 2005 at $200 AUD, so maybe 100 GBP at the time. Most of the rest were $100 or less. Now I wish I'd bought the Pirate sets back then too.
