Glowboy Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 (edited) My contest entry is a remake of the 6279 Skull Island in the style of Barracuda Bay, and El Dorado Fortress. This set has 652 parts, and 8 minifigures, compared to the original set’s 350 parts and 6 minifigures. The main focal point of the “Skull” Island is the skull itself, I had many iterations until I settled on the current design. I wanted to keep it simple, to update the design as well as keeping it close to the original as well. It can also turn, allowing row boats entry into the island. I wanted more of the “mountainous” aspect of the island so I brick built them rather than using big ugly rock pieces like the original. I also added an extra beach along the right side of the build and another palm tree, as I felt the original felt a bit empty. Inspired by the original set, I have re-imagined the side wall of the island where two muskets can be found hidden among some palm leaves and vines! I really liked this play feature in the original, and it is my favorite part of the build! Opposite of the muskets, sits the treasure for safe keeping. Along the dock are various boxes and supplies for the pirates, as well as cannons This time around, they are built on modern turntables, keeping to similar to the original. I feel it makes the island more imposing. I added an extra cannon to the top of the pier, as I wanted to add more firepower! I added stairs in this remake, as I always wondered how they brought supplies up and down from the top of the balcony by ladder? A crane and chain bring up the heaviest of boxes to the top with ease! I also added a more enclosed captain’s quarter with a door. In the shallows of the island are two rowboats, one pirate crewman bringing in the latest plunder back to the island, as well as the Imperial Guard. The roof of the captain's quarters can be removed as a play feature, and can allow access inside. The original Skull Island did not have this feature, instead had large arches for ease of access, but for my remake I wanted to be able to have a more realistic style building, without sacrificing upon playability and looks. I have designed the railings where it matches perfectly with the stairs!* I recreated the original pirate minifigures to more updated styles, as well as one I designed. I also added an extra imperial guard to the entourage, as I feel the officer would want some extra muscle. I’ve never really made an MOC like this before, so I am very pleased with how it turned out! I was so inspired by so many other contest entries, it made me want to throw my hat into the ring too! Please let me know what you think, i’m still pretty new, so let me know anything I can improve or fix. Thank you! Edited August 27, 2023 by Glowboy *I forgot to add "expanded roof" to my original line up of images Quote

iragm Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 You have every right to be proud of this! Great design, good minifigure selection and nice renders! I like the continuation of the stairs behind the main building. And the modernization of the color scheme is good. Actually I like nearly everything about this! The only issue I can find is that the building itself is very square and the use of masonry bricks is repetitive. It takes away from an otherwise excellent build. Quote
Mazin Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 I love Your design and a box it's in, but it's a little dark in there! ;) Dark packaging, too many dark bricks, too many black elements of clothing and too many black tricorn hats ;) So i guess these elements could do a bit of reworking, i mean, it's easy to change the headwear to prive more colors, and since You like to create own minifigs, maybe it's an inivite to shake the classics little bit and bring different colors of hats for Soldiers too? A brown hat for an officer. Would that work? But anyway, enough with outfits. Those bricks are what worries me as it's very monotonous. I mean, it does look good, but i guess it could use some others colors too. Like yellow, orange, whatever, just to make it more diverse, cause Lego buildings are not real life buildings, they are not supposed to be built by architects and for architects, but they should be build by kids for kids ;) If not different bricks then maybe You could use varied colors by adding few decorations, like a pirate crest or figurheads from captured ships build into that sctructure, etc. And should You opt to keep the wall the way it is, then maybe that handrail on the roof could get different colors. Or it could be made out of the loot, decorative elements taken from enemies. BTW those black lanterns on the wall are a bit blured, maybe they come in different colors, like grey? I think it would be better that way. BUT, i'd add that i'm only pointing to the front wall here. And maybe the back. But backsides in Lego sets were always somewhat neglected, kids didn;t care for them, did't play with them, so i guess designers focused on more importent areas. It's like with a christmas tree where no one puts ornaments on the back side ;) And sides are more appealing because You've used some vegetation on them and they work better with those surroundings. Simple element that makes a big difference. But then the whole build is very impressive, i absolutely love those stairs, doors, jetty, i love that circular cannon position by the rock and the rock work, palm trees, secret tunnel, and the skull is very manacing, very modern too, something they would use it for the cartoon series, right away. But my favorite elements are those concealed muskets and that crane. Brilliant. I always wanted to see more of those hidden gun positions, as Pirates were masters of trickery and deceit, and i don't recall seeing anything like german auxiliary cruisers in the series, You know, ships that could pose as merchant vessels only to drop it's disguise and show their real face, and i think there should be more of that in the series. Like cannons jumping out of the rock, bushes, sand, and stuff like that. So i'm very happy seeing those muskets in Your set. And it;s very well done, from both outside and inside. Not sure if Your captain's office is not too empty, but we have't realy seen much of the inside. AND... i'm not sure if it's that interior is reachable enough? There;s only door and that window leading into it? Doesn't look like there are any openagle walls, and i'd advise on adding such element, preferably on the side with muskets, as it would be probably easiest way of doing it, cause there's already a lot of action on other sides. And maybe the roof could work better if it wasn;t used for storage, but could receive some sitting set for the captain instead? It just seems that this area could use a lot more life. Maybe there could be a big telescope ( tho i see this a a set by the river, so a telecsope woudln;t work there ) or a hammock so that Your main guy could relax. Or perhaps he would prefer to sit on a golden throne he took from an ancient temple? There's plenty of option and i would opt on them having other things to do than just to stand in place ;) So, anyway, it's definitely one of my favourites now, would be even higher in charts if characters were more interesing and if that main bulding wasn;t so dark and monotonous. MstrOfPppts Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 A nice redesign, finally an entry, where the boat can and is intended to fit through the open cave! I really like the detailed build for the pier and it's height. My main complaint would be the crane - it's too simple with a direct connection to the wheel. No one would be able to lift even a single full barrel that way without any levers or pulleys. The skull design is not one of the strongest though it works. But I see some anomalies in the teeth build ... And finally a different more centered rotation point could be picked for the gif ... Quote
Elephant Knight Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 Overall a nice build, instantly recognizable for what it is. My only complaint is the same as MstrOfPppts, in that the crane is overly simplistic. While it does the job, it really just looks like a couple of technic beams with a chain attatched to it. EKnight Quote
Rogue Redcoat Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 For the crane issue, I would swap it for the new Eldorado crane (you can find the instructions here 6467678.pdf (lego.com starting on page 24), among other things I would keep the underside of the dock yellow, with black on top, swap some of the undersides of the rocks for the dark grey, and just update that captain with Torso Pirate Captain Jacket Open with Gold Trim over Green Shirt with Wide Neck Ruffle, Dark Orange Strap, Belt with Buckle Pattern / Black Arms / Dark Bluish Gray Hook Left / Yellow Hand Right: Part 973pb3973c01 | BrickLink, if they have it that is. Other than this I love all the good calls the extra minifigue, the upgraded firepower, and the snipers in the trees. Anyway, I love your remake, so happy building :) Quote
durazno33 Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 When I compare this to the original I appreciate that you added some stairs to allow the figs to get to the top. Getting rid of those BURPs is always a step forward and changed the red to dark red bricks is a nice touch. As far as feedback: I think it is a little too short. In the original the red portion was taller so that the second floor actually had space for a person to fit their fingers in and play with the pirates at the table. This is a little too short to do that. I imagine that you made it this height so that the stairs that you added on the back would reach from the second floor to the third floor. Lego stair pieces tend to be a bit short. If you look at the medieval market 10193's blue building, you can see that the designer added some bricks at the top to make up for it being too short for a proper floor height. If you have time, which is really short at this point, adding that extra height would help fix the proportions a bit. Quote

I wanted to keep the form factor the shape of the island, as well as keeping with the look of the original set. I was thinking either masonry bricks, or doing the style of imperial buildings with the "exposed" brick 1x2 round plates. I'll play around and see how to improve it. Quote

Thank you for taking the time to write up a detailed write up, I really appreciate it! You can never have enough tricorn hats as they say! I wanted to be in keeping with the "original" minifigures, as two had tricorns as well. While I don't need to, I feel adding these guys bring everything full circle with the original set and the remake. The brick building for the captain's quarters is definitely lacking, I wanted so much to keep it in line to the original set and the island form factor, I sacrificed the overall look of the build. you and others have said the same, and I am definitely in the process of improving it! decorations and more visual flair would go a long way. As for the lanterns, i'm not sure why they turned out like that it may be the reflectiveness of the render The side wall with the hidden musket wall was my favorite part in this build! The hinge pieces with the leaves is my take on the 2417 leaf piece from the original set, i'm glad you like it! Like you said the design is so simple, but also does so much heavy lifting for that side. I am very proud of the skull head, I went through many many iterations of that skull so I am pleased it turned out well! I was a bit worried it looked a bity derpy, but compared to my other designs this is terrifying! I'm glad details like the stairs, and other "functional" aspects of the build shined through in the end, they were things I made up for this remake! The captain's office is sparsely filled, it has the desk design from the barracuda bay, and some scatter here and there. And you reminded me of one picture I forgot to add, and it's an important one! The entire roof comes off of the set, and reveals the inside of the office! I thought of play features that i'd really like, and this one was one I thought of right away. Once I remake the building, I will get a better render of this bit! As for the interior of the Skull Island, I wanted the building to lift off, but I thought about it and there really isn't much to do other than the chest, and musket area. I did make sure to make the opening of the cave wide enough where someone can realistically stick their fingers in there and add/remove elements as needed. Plus, with the skull attached with a simple pin connector, it can be taken off for even more room. But good suggestion though! A removable wall on the right side is something i'll consider as well. I think a bit differently for the roof, I feel Skull Island is more of a base of operations and storage depot for the pirates on the sea. A secret place to store plundered loot and supplies, as well as some dirty dealings under the table with corrupt officers and other pirates. This would be their own little "depot" to drop off loot and send off supplies to bigger boats via the rowboat. I do agree with adding some other things to the roof to liven up the place a bit, a mounted telescope is a good idea! Thank you again for your kind words and feedback, it's great to hear from others on what can be improved upon and what are good to stay. This is a great jumping off point on improving my build, hope to update this soon. Take care! Quote

The size of the cave for the original Skull Island bothered me alot, and expanding the cave and clearance for it to comfortably fit the boat inside. I struggled alot with the crane, I had to make one that was small enough to fit the rough, but also simple enough to operate with the chain attachment to the barrel/boxes. I was actually inspired by the 75198 Tatooine battle pack and 75220 Sandcrawler, they're some of my favorite SW sets! It was inspired to include that into my build. Playing with it is actually pretty reliable and rigid enough to carry small pieces! Of course from the minifigure perspective it doesn't have enough aspects of it to really "move anything". I thought of it more of a play feature some can get more hands on with the crane with the aid of technic parts; I think it works well enough as a crane without string. As for the over all design it is a bit lacking, I agree a facelift for it is in order. As for the 3d rotation of the gif, I rendered it 3 times and haven't gotten it to center. I'm pretty new to bricklink studio, but I haven't been able to figure out how to make center it. I think it's things like the crane and imperial ship that juts off the side of the set enough where the render moves the center of the rotation off enough to be a bit jarring. If you know a way to fix the rotation, please let me know! 15 hours ago, Rogue Redcoat said: For the crane issue, I would swap it for the new Eldorado crane (you can find the instructions here 6467678.pdf (lego.com starting on page 24), among other things I would keep the underside of the dock yellow, with black on top, swap some of the undersides of the rocks for the dark grey, and just update that captain with Torso Pirate Captain Jacket Open with Gold Trim over Green Shirt with Wide Neck Ruffle, Dark Orange Strap, Belt with Buckle Pattern / Black Arms / Dark Bluish Gray Hook Left / Yellow Hand Right: Part 973pb3973c01 | BrickLink, if they have it that is. I am unsure how to deal with strings in BL studio, but a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, the selection of torsos is strangely limited, and really bothers me too. I don't know why I can only find certain textures, the old one is the best I could get! Thank you again for all your help, and feedback! Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Yeah I see the similarity for the crane, though SW gets away easily with the mechanics and hydraulics being built into the liftarms yet it's still a bit of a funky design. But it is much harder to make such an excuse in the era of pirates. As for the render, I have no idea how to do that, nor how it was done. Though what you're saying with the hanging out parts makes sense. Never worked with studio. Did a gif from LDD once but it was not rendered and manually positioned and turned for a specific angle. I just pointed out the aesthetic flaw. I signed up as a critic at this contest not a studio specialist! ;) Quote

I actually had an opening roof top for the set designed out, but forgot to make a render! It's always one thing we forget sometimes It allows access into the building as a play feature, which was why I had a more enclosed design in mind. And as a matter of fact, i love trikorns too :) Tho, with designing anything it's sort of this compromises, weighing what we would love to do and what should do ;) I'm working on my own history-adventure project and have a tough time coming up with all sorts of various characters, and their headwear, clothing, weaponry, etc that i don't even like, but i have to think about them in order to create ariety and a bigger range of products :) And honestly, i'd just love to repeat only but a few best aspects in all those visual departments, that would probably work everywhere... but that would be against rules of compromises and providing variety ;) And yeah, i think Your skull offer this compromise in the way it's designed too, as it doesn't seem overcomplicated, it doesnt have as many details as some other that we've seen on remakes, it looks simple, but it doesnt change the fact that You've planned it extremely well, and it strikes your eyes immidiately, and making it sorta cartoonish was brilliants, as it probably wouldn't give such effect if it was more serious and more classic in form :) Quote

Mazin Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) HERE ARE MY FINAL THOUGHTS AND REASONS WHY I'VE DECIDED TO RANK THIS SET AT THE 5TH PLACE IN THE MAIN BUILDING CATEGORY Pirates are THE GUYS of this franchise and everyone, kid or adult, will always choose sets with them as first, if given that chance, after all, it's named after them. And this might be the best searats-focused set we actually saw in these entries. It's quite big and got plenty of cool stuff, with inviting cartoony skull, that looks like it would kill everyone who would dare not to buy it. And that's just for starters, cause there's plenty of characters to go with it, boats, great building, hell, even those stairs would constalty work as a battlegound for my scenarios if i was a kid. Some might say that that big jetty could use some more development, and they might be right, but i feel that even with it's huge empty space it can be a fantastic playing spot, and some kids actually prefer if sets their get leave that option to them, instrad of having every corned completely build up. That tower is already build up, and i guess it's concealed muskets alone could win a prize for the best playfeature, together with the rotating skull, or a crane. Brilliant. And even the fact that it's "only" a remake, doesn't change my oppinion that it's somewhat unique. The use of vegetations and little spots of sands under that pier, as well as rockwork are trully stunning, making it a perfect example of using budgetary amount of pieces to create someting that could overshadow more complicated designs. Even tho that i think that using only red bricks is a bit too far, and they could welcome some other colors as well ;) And it's minifigures could be more attractive, given the large number of them included, as they could offer more attractive types, especially on the pirate side ;) And that's why SIR lands on the 5th place in my list, tho i'm still happy i could squeeze it into the charts ;) Edited August 31, 2023 by Mazin Quote
