I think the actual translation of the characters name from Chinese is actually Sand Monk. In English, the guy can be either known as Friar Sand, or Sandy. Might I remind you that "Sandy" is also short for Alexander, and thus a somewhat common name or nickname among men as well? Sidenote: My real name isn't Sandy, by the way.
