Well, I got kind of carried away with the Art Deco business: my last ship had a "splash", this ship goes (at least in my mind) all the way... I'm done with this fad though, as I'm out of those little rounded corner pieces. I think I should set some expectations: it's nominally an "executive cruiser" for lack of a better term, but in this case I envisioned more of a space private jet, and I think I defined the size and accommodations accordingly. Then again, I've only ridden in a small timeshare once, so your mileage may vary. That being said, the design language is much more bus/railcar as that's where much more of the Art Deco I've seen manifests itself. The roof and rear fins have a smattering of SNOT, but most of the construction is conventional studs-on-top. There is also a full interior in a hybrid plane/train sort of style (thank you Santa Fe car set). I would say my favorite interior thing is the doubly angled control panel on the flight deck. And the full Brickshelf gallery as well.

Heh, I think we are saying the same thing, but have different visions of what is functional and aesthetic.

I like this because there really is no reason a spacecraft needs to have a shape other than a box (a sphere has, of course, your best volume/surface area ratio, though). I bet a "real" frigate would probably look much more like this than some of the more exotic shapes out there. That being said, this is science fiction, so I will say it is a little plain, but nice work nonetheless.

Hmm, I used to do a lot of comics, but somewhere along the line it just got really difficult... mainly sci-fi, anime, and occasionally trains these days:

Man, I spent some time a few years ago putting some old sets back together... but this is really above and beyond! I wish I was old enough to own/have owned some of these classics.

MoC: Container Freighter with a Splash of Art Deco
Commander Wolf replied to Commander Wolf's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
See, this is what makes sci-fi interesting; all the world views are so diverse since it doesn't exist yet. Even in minifig scale (which it is; there is a small interior), I tend to think of a ship of this size much closer to a truck/train/plane than a sea-going ship, and hence the interior is designed with that sort of accommodation in mind, though I could totally see it going the other way. And you could always argue about how automated your systems should/shouldn't be - I used to do civilian ships with multi-person flight decks, but more recently it's like what exactly is there to control here? This is also an internal debate I had going too: early on I was planning to use round engines with some hubs around a round 4x4 core, and these looked pretty beefy, but they didn't match the rest of the styling. At first I thought the current slab engines were indeed a little small, but the 2x8 bank of thrusters had the same area as the original 4x4 core, so that's how I ended up convincing (or rationalizing) myself that it was ok. Also arm and pod noted. Probably not for my next ship, but I like nonetheless. Just didn't occur to me due to my truck/train/place schema. -
I would see if I could buy the sets from the guy... maybe at a lower price than if he sold elsewhere :D

MoC: Container Freighter with a Splash of Art Deco
Commander Wolf replied to Commander Wolf's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Thanks for the remarks, guys; it gives me some confidence. Any suggestions for changes or improvements? I am currently working on a second ship, so I'm trying to see if there are lessons I can take away from this one. -
Hi all, I'd been out of Lego for a number of years thanks to school and whatnot, but recently I had the chance to dust off my Lego and build this ship. Well, like the tile says, I'd it's something like "container freighter with a splash of Art Deco". I wanted to make something with unified construction, unified styling and a focus on the form of the ship, and not just spam greebles. To that end, I think it turned out pretty well - at least compared to what I'd done in the past, but I'd like some thoughts. The ship isn't terribly large at 68 studs, but there's a bit of SNOT and stuff in the engines, spars, fins, and such. BrickShelf gallery when moderated. I hope the pics aren't too big.

I wish I could understand what the missile guys were saying, but I doubt my lack of understanding detracts too much from the video...

How many copies made of each set?

Considering how S&H stocks out and restocks, I'd say they go with the old batch method of production. -
How many copies made of each set?
Commander Wolf replied to BearHeart's topic in General LEGO Discussion
If I had to guess, I'd guess in the hundreds of thousands... but that's based off the fact that the Maersk Sealand 10152 was supposed to be a "limited run" of seven thousand. -
Damn that's a lot of Lego. People ask about the point, well I've got a fair bit of kleptomania inside me and I fully agree with: For people like me there's a great sense of accomplishment when you start filling out that wall, little by little...

Been working on a hundred and ten stud SHIP for a couple of weeks now: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ld/dsc00266.jpg Doesn't look like it'll be done for a while, though I'm just sitting around waiting for BL orders atm.

The idea for the modified 6541 ship comes from some of Arthur Clarke's early short stories in which he refers to spacecraft as "liners". That always made me think of a space-Titanic cruising through space. It's a spaceship... no pun intended XD If I had more "Maersk Blue", I'd have modded the Sealand instead.

Bah... I want one now XD How high did your auction run?

That's basically the same kinda thing I've been hearing. You know, I was dubious as well at first, but after reading up on the DMA and its history it seems... well, plausible. A friend of mine dual boots XP/Linux (Forget what distribution, though, it's a wierd sounding one). He's always claiming its great and all, but he claims a lot of things are great and all when they really aren't. I've used Fedora before. Ultimately it feels like using a Mac/Windows/DOS crossbreed (Oh yes, descriptive); I prefer XP. But we all know that Linux is proven to be safer than the other two, so if safety is one of your primary concerns...

Finally got around to uploading some pictures! First, a slight modification to the 6541 container ship: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc04245.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc04246.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc04247.jpg This next one is a rather old propellor driven hovercraft (Not in the traditional sense, but in the space sense; there has to be a better word for this!): http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc02181.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc02191.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc02193.jpg Recently, the same idea manifested itself in a propellor driven container hovercraft. This one has contra-rotating propellors and a clutch: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc04230.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc04231.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BradlyCo...ce/dsc04240.jpg This next one is simply what I thought was a rather nice engine for my ongoing project. Finally, a spacecraft that deserved its own page: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/28933 Your throughts are appreciated!

Well, I've heard a lot of horror stories but I tried using it for the first time on my friend's new laptop today... I can't say it's too bad; I didn't get to take a good look around, but from a cursory glance, the interface is pretty similar to XP, just prettier... and slower. And it really does take up a whole 8-10GB just for the OS. We tried to install some software and contrary to what I've heard, there wasn't a bazillion security prompts, maybe only just as many as XP for that matter, but I didn't get to see more than that. I'm going to try it on my desktop sooner or later though. I'll see how that is...

As far as I know there is no way to move folders on BS, aside from deleting the old folder and recreating it elsewhere. It would certainly be nice if there was such a feature, though.
-
I see you're also a fan of the Windows "Classic" setup :-) Now not only am I going to add a desktop picture, here's the actual machine itself!
-
Well, as there are no studs on the roof, there are no studs to not be on top, so I would say it's not SNOT.

Go for an ISD! ISD ftw! I've been wanting to buy an ISD (Either one) for a while now.
