technik wheels and tyres
hga09 replied to SNIPE's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ferraro Enzo (8653) and Ferrari 599 (8145) have medium (56mm x 34mm) Technic racing wheels with 68.8 x 36 ZR tires. There are three other types of tires that can fit the same wheels as shown on the Bricklink catalog page. Ferrari F1 (8674) and Williams F1 (8461) have large (62.4mm x 46mm) Technic racing wheels. Ferrari F1 has Michelin tires and Williams F1 has unmarked tires of the same size which only fit these wheels. There is also a Technic Racing labeled version of the same tire from set 8458. The extremely large all terrain Lego tires from sets 8466 and 8457 also fits these wheels. 8448 have a unique set of tires and wheels (32196/32197) which are incompatible with any other Lego tire/wheel AFAIK. I am not familiar with the last part in your message. -

Lego Technic Clones
hga09 replied to imajor's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I agree that copying a set design is clear copyright violation. Furthermore, some of these sets may contains parts for which the patents have not yet expired. This is getting out of hand. Now there are even "clone" copies of the UCS Millennium Falcon out there, selling for more than $500! -
Awesome work! Looking forward to see your Grand Emporium at the same scale...

For the minifigures who like to live life in the fast lane, here is a 6-wide yellow sports car, loosely inspired by Lamborghini Gallardo Sypder:

A 1x3 jumper plate with 2 studs will be extremely useful.

Excellent MOC. I think the left door you need is a white 825. This is not a very expensive item, but there is currently only one available on BrickLink. You can also get a 825p01 or 825p02 and remove the sticker, but these old white parts are usually in pretty poor condition when sold as used... The more commonly found 4x5 train door is probably too big for this scale.

I think this car is about the right scale with respect to the width of minifigs. A car realy has to be about 7w to be able to accommodate two minifigs side by side.. Once you set the width of the car, the other dimensions follow to keep the car in proportion. I did design a 6-wide car earlier, but it is impossible to seat two minifigs side-by-side in this one as there isn't sufficient shoulder room: Of course, minifigs don't really have realistic body proportions - they are kind of the anti-Barbie. A lot of TLC town vehicles appear to be proportioned with respect to the height of the minifigs, which is how we end up with some many single seater cars. Here is the BrickLink catalog page for the wheels.

Here is a 7-wide sports car that can seat two minifigures: The doors will be replaced with 1x4 curved modified bricks at some point. I didn't have any of those in red, so I used the old 1x3 doors. The minifig binoculars are a perfect fit for dual exhaust pipes at this scale: Looks like the ladies are taking the car for a spin: Even though this wasn't originally intended, someone pointed that it looks like the Ferrari Pininfarina Rossa concept car.

[REVIEW] 8070 Supercar
hga09 replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The price is indeed reasonable. I was expecting this set to be priced at $149. With the BOGO deal at ToysRUs, it comes to $90 per set. 8448 did have the coolest custom set of wheels, though. It is understandable that Lego opted to keep the cost of the 8070 low by not using custom wheels, but they could have at least included some hubcabs like the Ferrari 599 set. After all, the same hubcap part (58088) is being offered in a very low cost Technic set (8068) -

I think Extreme Cruiser will be a an off-road vehicle that uses the same wheels and tires as 8466. -
Lego Universe - RIP?

They have to go with the revenue model that has been successful for social gaming companies: - Game is free - Subscription is free - You get very limited resources unless you pay to get virtual cash - Use virtual cash to buy area/bricks/etc. -

8043 looks very similar to a Komatsu PC 650: -
I do agree with these observations, however, there are also structural integrity issues at this scale. I will look into changing the slope behind the head to be more more uniform. This is also true. Initially, I had to make the root parts of the engines 2 wide since the only cylinder available in DesignbyMe mode was 2x2. Now that it is possible to get larger cylinders for the rest of the engines, it should be possible to make the root parts 3 wide. This, however, requires major surgery to the model, since there is a 1/2 stud shift going on in the back section to allow for 1-stud wide engine spacing. Here is the view from the rear with the new engines: Another good observation. Luckily, this is really easy to fix, and I think the version below looks much better. Actually the red middle section does taper toward the docking rings. The white fins on top and bottom are the ones that expand toward the back as they reach the docking rings. I did try to approximate this by the triangular folding fins on top and bottom. However, in this style of building, I cannot find a way to attach fins that are not parallel to the main axis of the body. Another good suggestion. See the new version posted above, which I think, improves in this area. I could not create the red bar in the middle in front of the engine block. This should be possible when engine blocks are sized to 3-wide. Thanks. I do appreciate your detailed comments, they are very helpful in improving the model.

Design by Me price is around $200. However, most of the parts are very common Lego pieces. Many Lego fans may have 90% or more of the parts already in their stock. The Design by Me version has 955 parts in 164 lots. Just for fun, I entered the part list to Bricklink and found a store (sabobrick) that has 888 of the parts (148 lots) for $81.27. All are brand new parts, too...

I think part of what makes it look somewhat fat in the middle is the default camera angle for LDD. Here is another view from the top to shows the proportions (length/width) better: I do agree that the engines are a bit too "thin". There is no way to build a 3x3 engine in the DesignByMe mode. However, the wonderful world of the "Universe Mode" has some interesting possibilities:

LDD model of Tantive for using the minimal (DesignByMe) brick set: LDD Model can be found here. Here is a slightly modified version (based on some suggestions on this thread) that uses a few bricks that are only available in LDD Universe mode to match the scale of the engines better:

Front wheels can be "steered" for posing purposes, but it does not have HoG steering. I am pretty sure I can add this when I actually build it with real parts, I ran into some LDD problems with steering rack implementation...
