Would have been a nice opportunity to make a few other changes, like printed tyres, HOG steering and a more authentic two stages of gear reduction for the final drive (for a faster engine speed), and maybe some representation of the large radiators so it doesn't feel quite as empty. On the other hand, it did appear to be selling quite well as is. But was that just the initial sales spike you get with most sets, or was it lack of availability that made it hard to get?

Time to rename Technic bricks?
allanp replied to Tube Map Central's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Names, and words in general, are just sounds we make to convey some meaning. The sound itself is harmless and meaningless but the meaning we attribute to those sounds is what does the work. We all know what a technic brick is which is what makes the description useful. To change it would only make it less useful until everyone is caught up. -

Was that a stated feature from a leak? Assembly that follows the actual crane could be a nice feature but if it does exist it might be entirely manual or just part of the building process. I would think that setting up the real crane requires more than just the Derrick winch so I doubt it'll have fully motorised assembly. Happy to be wrong though. And as the Derrick winch may only be needed for assembly then it could use a motor for another winch via a simple manually operated gearbox, as both winches wouldn't be used at the same time, no? And to those wondering why we don't just wait for more info, it's because speculation is fun! -

Does it need the Derrick winch? Thought that was only for assembly? -

If the counterweight is heavy enough and has its own wheels to rest on the ground you wouldn't need a big slew ring, just one that can take a lot of downward pressure and still rotate, so ATAT rings might be perfect. -

Never seen that before. In a previous job I was a maintenance engineer at a printing factory with massive 6 colour Heidelberg's and such. I doubt there are many like that. -
Finally watched Dune (new remake, never seen original) and I loved it. It's like StarWars for grown ups!

I don't think this will I'll be the case. According to the promobricks live stream the designer put a lot of effort into making the mechanism as realistic as possible and they designed new parts for this purpose. It remains to be seen if this is true. One question I have though, is if this is true, then will it be for only 5 bladed helicopters or have the new parts been designed in such a way as to allow 2, 3 and 4 blade setups also?

I noticed in a YouTube Smyths ad for the Sian that the colours looked fairly consistent. Have they fixed the issue or is there some trickery going on? Edit: Silly me, the ad was posted a year ago so it was trickery!- 5,507 replies

I get wanting to store them away, but then why have them if you can't enjoy them? You can always clean them. Years ago I found my skulls eye schooner sails in the bottom of a box of random bricks, all dirty and creased to buggery. They looked like Picasso sales! I carefully hand washed and ironed them between two paper towels and they turned out great. Just keep them from direct sunlight and dust regularly, then wash and iron as needed, once per year maybe?

I have found this happens in some gearboxes where you have an idler gear (gear with smooth hole) that has a side load on it (like when driving another gear) whilst it's running on an axle that's also turning as part of the same drive train at a different speed. The more you try to push forward the more side loading you get on the idler gear and the whole thing locks up especially in lower gears (one of many reasons we need more sizes of clutch gears!). I don't know if this is your issue but try tapping on all the different idler gears with the tip of a screw driver while under a small load, does it move a little then?

Maybe, until we have pics we don't know but the info coming out of promobricks all points to there being a luffing jib. But it would be fairly easy to reconfigure into multiple setups so I wouldn't be that surprised if they make it reconfigurable right out the box. -

According to the latest pomobricks livestream (which I watched with captions auto translated to English so might not be perfect) this set will have 3 pneumatics, 2 large ones in dark bley and one small one for the grabber in yellow. -
So I watched the latest promobricks livestream (with captions auto translated into English so might not be perfect) but they were saying that it does indeed have both cyclic and collective controls, and that the mechanics to achieve this are very realistic with new pieces and possibly a new swash plate. They didn't say if the tail rotor has any pitch control but that the blades are slightly tilted to make a little wind. They also say that it does have two speeds for the rotors. It has a slow speed so you can see the functions working, you can see the blades tilting as they rotate easier, and a fast speed so that it can generate some wind. That might be an unrealistic addition but I really like that idea. It's an additional feature that allows you to better see the realistic functions working, it's not replacing something realistic with something that's unrealistic. So I am really excited by this set.

I agree. My guess is that they will omit the winch right above the counterweight (so the derrick is at a fixed angle) and the luffing jib will be included. -

Sounds interesting, and 6 motors sounds right. Two tracks, 1 slew, one lower boom angle, one upper boom angle and one hook. Nice to see new counter weight elements and the large lattice boom elements also. If this is done (as I expect it will be) with lots of rigging and winches then it will be a fairly realistic mechanical representation of the real thing (minus hydraulic motors of course!) so I'm quite excited for this actually. I haven't got the last two flagships so hopefully this one breaks the spell. Doesn't sound like the best flagship ever as it's nothing really new. It's 42042 only bigger. But I like 42042 and this one will be more realistic without the function switching gearbox, which you never find in real vehicles. So far 2022 2nd half is looking pretty good, don't want to get too excited before seeing proper pictures of finalised designs though. -
42139 - All-terrain Vehicle
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Another good review and I agree, I like this set. The gearbox is done right in multiple ways. Not only have they got the gears numbered the right way round but it's also built realistically, with all gears mounted on two parallel shafts and differently sized pairs of gears to achieve the different speeds. Okay, it's only two speeds, and the engine is in the middle of the gearbox, and we saw the same thing to power a winch in a previous set.....for some reason! But this is the first speed transmission gearbox (being used to drive the wheels) that's realistic. The rest of the set is also decently packed with functions and mechanisms. I like it. -
I am excited for this. "Climb and descend" implies collective control and "front, back, right or left" implies cyclic control. And "A few new parts are said to have been designed for this purpose" also suggests that both controls may be present and done so in a way that's more elegant than what we're currently able to MOC.

42143 - Ferrari Daytona SP3
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
On the good side, I'm so very glad they went with a regular combustion engine car as opposed to an electric as at least we'll get some mechanics! On the negative side however the Daytona looks to be a mid engined V12 with flappy paddles and rear wheel drive, so the Sian in red minus the front wheel drive, and still no chance of an 8880 style stick shift but with more speeds and cool linkage to the gearbox. I hope (but probably shouldn't expect) that they heard the critisms of the Sian (in terms of not being much of a technical improvement of the Chiron before it) and have in some way (maybe one of the few mentioned here numerous times) brought something other than a repackaged Sian.
