Christmas Clearout: Old Trains for New Homes
roamingstop replied to roamingstop's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
Hey Murdoch; good luck - I hope you get it. Thanks for bidding; it is a nice set. If you are building a 7735 like post wagon I can probably help out with a set of doors (red). Not perfect condition (probably missing a handle) but certainly a good helping hand. For anyone else - I added two job lots of blue conducting rails for 4.5V and 12V and associated switches. -
The new trailer has the train crash at the end - and whilst crashing there is clearly only one green (dark green?) passenger car attached; and there is no obvious tender attached. So that could easily account for the lower piece count.

That movie grab shows a Loco which is very similar to Monster Fights Ghost Train... with a different set of carriages. I even wonder if for playability it will even run on ghost pulley and rubber rims. Take off the extra trims and you will see what I mean... I really wonder how well this Ghost Train has sold... and for playability

I did a quick google search on his name - and saw pages updated in 2006 There is a Steve in Minneapolis on LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/pub/steve-demlow/4/363/9bb And in 2006 he still seemed to be present on the Lugnet http://news.lugnet.com/trains/?n=27063&t=i&v=a http://www.lugnet.com/people/members/?m=36 And he lists as being a member of this LUG http://gmltc.org/

I wonder how long it will take the Horizon Express to be modified into the new two floor types (running into Switzerland)...

Solution for the 3677: red battery box sides
roamingstop replied to JopieK's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I think it was by zurihb. Cant search from my handy -
My guess would be something similar to western train chase. However since that loco was also similar to the general... I rhink the loco crashes; and the trailer has lots of action in the wagons. So guess is a more play worthy set mixing ghost train and toy story elements. Oh and this has been in brickset since october - i mentioned it inthe 2013 speculation thread *raspberry*

4563 Load and Haul Instructions Needed
roamingstop replied to Chief Justice Lego's topic in LEGO Train Tech
The difference is in the large red window piece. In some the space for the bricks (which it sits over) is 4 studs wide and two bricks high. In the others it is three bricks high. Im not sure why there was a mould change; perhaps to make it more versatile? Anyway the difference is only apparent when building either 4563 or 4551 - and is easy to rectify. There was only ever one mould in green. -
4563 Load and Haul Instructions Needed
roamingstop replied to Chief Justice Lego's topic in LEGO Train Tech
The large red piece? The last page of the peeron instructions should show the alternate build - it was a supplimental sheet. The construction of the nose piece is tweaked slightly - unfortunately im at a lunik concert and dont have the pdf handy. I have both versions. If you beed help on sunday pm me http://www.peeron.com/scans/4563-1/107 http://www.peeron.com/scans/4563-1/108 -
WIP: 6-2-0 ES co. Horror Steam Locomotive
roamingstop replied to Electricsteam's topic in LEGO Train Tech
If you look at the wheels they are actually not normal profile for trains; so i guess a pair large white motorbike wheels would look perfect as drivers - as long as there are no switches involved. (or you mount the wheels 1/2 stud off the rails; and hide a normal wheelset behind) -
Thanks for info Ole. I was in direct contact with the guy - his brickshelf pages are below (this original post got lost in the last forum rebuild). Some of the movels were adapted from those done by James Mathis (e.g. his DB103) and others were his own design. He kindly allowed me to link to his other models; and I have to say that the 7740 colour scheme does work pretty well. I prefer the dark red and tan of the real life TEE - but this is still Lego. For example; on this brickshelf page you see the original 7740 combined with a 7740 mod and red / black pantographs So I have to agree with Loco-Annie - the red / black pantographs do work well. And I might have to finish modding some 7740's in a similar way. Actually looking back at the top pictures (way up this thread) it would almost seem as if the official 7740 locomotive is a bad cross between the diesel (2 wheel bogey; sloping fronts, but much longer) and the longer 3 wheel bogey electric version, but with rounded fronts. So I know my next steps: slight modifications of the 7740 to match the correct locomotives carriages in Lego scale (red and yellow) and longer term to go into the 7-8 wide red and tan versions.

I know most people said dont mess with 7740; and to an extent I agree. However I did come across this photo whilst doing a google image search. I have no idea who made it. The model was linked into a form of Danish auction type site; and was cached. I created a copy onto flickr - if you know who the original owner / designer is then im happy to make reference to it. 7740-mod by [uNKNOWN] hosted by roamingstudio, on Flickr Edit: It seems to be a listing from here - any of the Danish readers care to help? Google translate indicates that it is being sold as incomplete; wrong windows and no engine. What interested me more than anything is how the simple red pantographs really dont look out of place for the old model. Indeed even changing the grey windows for yellow doesnt look too bad; and I think this could be an interesting solution to invest for my next 7740 - PF version. To be done over next months.

Sorry for the bump; I added the LXF file online here (finally). the 1x1x2 yellow windows; and 1x6x3 yellow panels are missing, replaced with equivalents. The 12V wheel blocks are also made from technic bits; but you get the general idea.

According to Lego Online Replacement Service (add a set number; select the part and order upto 100?) the dark red slopes from Pet Shop are 0.7 CHF; compared to BL with about 0.78 CHF (a few items) and 1$ for higher volumes. So I placed electronic order at TLG - not sure if it will be honored as their telephone support was "customer support is not open at weekends ; except October until Christmas when we are open... but we are not answering the phones: bye bye". Most other parts seem to be cheaper via BL; including the 2x3x4 72 degree dark red slopes. (0.15 vs 05 CHF)

If you are going down slight lego modifying path... Solderworks or 3m make conductive epoxy which could be used to attach braid to pins; To stop ends coming loose add a few 2x2 corner plates

Some time ago i tried a 9v pp3 solution in 4511 locos to see what it went like. Good for about 1hr 30 before battery drains; so multiple aaa with holder is better choice; especially since pp3 needs 3 stud internal space. Good for shunting but not continuous running
-
You can directly wire a PP3 (or equivalent holder as you show) to the 0V and 9V lines which are fed into the IR receiver (option: use a PF / 9V adaptor cable); this then generates the necessary C1 and C2 data. No need to destroy a good battery box; and is a lot easier if you want to reverse the decision in the future.
-
From memory the people were phoning lego direct (customer services) and asking to place an order for specific parts which are not on the website; somehow through the replacement service perhaps? I believe it depends upon the Lego rep you speak with.

One more question for Zephyr: Can you make clear pieces? Im thinking that a 'prism' piece which acts to convert the new PF lights to the old 1x4 and 1x6 light bricks would be really nice. Essentially it is a just a piece of plastic - it is not working as a full prism with internal refracted angles. The advantage of such an adapter piece is that you could connect 1 of the PF lights to the prism block (provides 2 point lights) and the 2nd can be connected to make the 3rd higher light (above). Actually it would be much nicer if Lego used two colour LEDs so that when current is in one direction you get white light and in the other you get red. But perhaps a custom circuit for that would be better.
-
Sorry for bumping the old thread - but I found it useful. Im planning on doing this route in 2013; but was not sure which bricks were the most rare? Im not a stickler for exact details so no dark blue arches wont bother me. I saw that 4430b (hollow stud) can be around 1$ each - is that good? Or does Lego still provide them via S@H at cheaper prices? Which bits tend to be cheaper to source from TLG / S@H and which on BL? Since I will also make a mod and double length the cafe corner the roof pieces will be nicer to get en masse.
