  1. You're definitely free to mod him however you like, but personally I much prefer the claws in the set, especially since they have such a creative dual function. It's much different than the classic set aesthetically, but I think it's still true to that design in terms of its function and personality, and arguably an improvement in terms of the practicality of the design. Pointy claws aren't nearly as useful for digging as broad, shovel-like claws like you'd see on a mole.
  2. I haven't noticed any difference in the sets I've received. The masks are shinier than many 2004–2013 BIONICLE and Hero Factory masks, but this is because they are made of hard polycarbonate plastic rather than softer polypropylene plastic, and generally have a very smooth surface finish. The other parts are generally just as shiny as similar parts from previous years.
  3. Well, as Lloyd and Zane, anyway. Neither Jay nor Cole has appeared in that armor as a physical minifigure. The Jay in Battle for Ninjago City just wears his usual "rebooted" garb but with added shoulder armor. It's so great that we're getting sets like this that feature characters in older costumes that they were never released in when those costumes were still current!
  4. Sure it would. Easter eggs don't have to make sense from an in-universe perspective, and it's actually incredibly common for them to be shout-outs to other continuities or even different stories altogether. Just like how there were carvings of R2-D2 and C-3PO in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Not everybody needs to know what they are — they're simply included for the benefit of people who DO know what they are. In this case, that means G1 BIONICLE fans. As for why the animators chose the Mask of Time, perhaps because it was the first BIONICLE mask designed, or perhaps to reinforce the theme of time, or perhaps just because it IS somewhat obscure and that makes it particularly potent as an inside reference among long-time fans.
  5. Lol, you always know an argument is lost when people trot out the old "LEGO has lied in the past" claim. Funny how people can never provide examples where a LEGO rep knew the truth and lied about it. Instead it's always an evasive answer, or an example of somebody misunderstanding the question, or an automatic or out-of-date response form. And because of these so-called lies, we should ALWAYS be prepared to doubt the LEGO Group's word, at least when we don't like the answers they've given us.
  6. I'm just going to say one thing. Time COULD mean time travel. It could ALSO mean as lot of other things. Could mean the new timeline diverged from the old as a result of some event in this continuity. Could mean some temporal catastrophe in the old timeline rewrote all of history, and we're seeing the new rewritten history. Could mean the Toa ARE time travelers, but from another point in this NEW continuity rather than any point in the old continuity. But everybody seems to assume time equals time travel and that time travel in turn means the Toa must be temporal immigrants from the OLD continuity. As for the "half a mask" thing, maybe it WILL be established that the old Vahi was unfinished and that's where this timeline diverged. But it does not at all imply that there are two halves that are supposed to go together. If I wrote half a book and we learned that there would one day be a finished book, that wouldn't mean that somewhere in the world is another half-written book that fits together with mine like a pair of puzzle pieces. And that's what bugs me — not the idea that the old Vahi MIGHT not have been complete (because it would certainly explain its utter stupidity from a practical standpoint), but the idea that the only way for a complete Mask of Time to exist is putting an incomplete one together with another equally incomplete one that also exists. Why can't the complete Mask of Time have been CREATED whole in the first place? I guess this was more than one thing.
  7. That's always fun, but one of the especially cool things you can have in an art book is commentary from the people who created the concept art.
  8. Just in case anyone's wondering, I don't think there's any age limit on the magazine. I subscribed a couple months ago, and didn't lie about my age on the form at all (I'm 23). There WAS a warning that the magazine is designed with younger kids in mind, but I could still complete the form and still received my first issue a month or so ago. Anyway, this new info is great! Love the designer interview as well! Look forward to getting my copy!
  9. Monsters don't necessarily have to be non-sentient. I think Smaug in the Hobbit movies would qualify as a monster, even though he has plenty of intelligence and personality. Although personally, I wouldn't mind the first enemies of the Toa having more of a dark, alien intelligence that lets them go toe-to-toe with the Toa on a tactical level while still remaining nameless and faceless from the perspective of the Toa and villagers. I don't particularly think it matters what Hero Factory has done for the last few years. If the new BIONICLE is going to create a compelling narrative, it should focus on doing what's best for its own sets and story and not get hung up on trends in the LEGO portfolio as a whole. And I think it makes more sense from a narrative standpoint for the Toa to face more beastly enemies in their establishing character arc and then for the story to introduce more sapient enemies with diverse personalities later on in order to raise the stakes for the established heroes.
  10. It has allows for some movement, but can't spin freely like the Brain Attack shields because the black friction pins on at least one of the sides will collide with the hand/wrist.
  11. Hoping these "Skull" sets end up being Rahi-like monsters! The names sound like they could suggest some awesome, creative action features. Good to get a Mask Maker (Ekimu, presumably), though it's a shame none of the set names explicitly refer to Makuta.
  12. Can we not call him POS? That usually stands for... something else.
  13. The official website now has product pages for the new sets, including some cute and funny videos showing off the sets' features!
  14. What's wrong with his Turbo Shovelers? They look a lot more efficient for digging than his old claws were. There's a reason moles have large, shovel-shaped paws rather than long, skeletal fingers. Plus, they're really no more detailed than many Hero Factory pieces like this one, this one, or this one. They still have a smooth, solid look, even with occasional vents and pistons.
  15. IMDB is user-edited. As such, it's easy for one user to post legitimate episode titles and another user to attach completely bogus synopses to those titles, as happened here. Any connections to the actual official story amount to "educated guesses" on the part of the person behind the hoax.
  16. Can I just clarify something? There has never been any reason to think this universe will have the "other half" of the Vahi. The LEGO representatives at NYCC said that the old BIONICLE's Mask of Time was "half a mask" and that the new BIONICLE would have "the whole mask". NOT that the new BIONICLE would have "the other half of the mask". A lot of people seem to assume for some reason that this means there is literally a half-mask in the new universe that connects to the half-mask from the old universe, when the more likely possibility is that the new universe's mask will be a full mask to begin with. A reference to the Generation 1 storyline doesn't mean the universes have to end up sharing a bloated continuity. There are lots of ways to connect the universes that doesn't require understanding EITHER of them to be dependent on the other. I've heard a number of theories that would be simple enough. One person on BZPower suggested that maybe the Mask of Time in the old universe was misused or destroyed and it caused history to completely rewrite itself, creating the new universe. That wouldn't require any "immigrants" from the old universe in the new one or vice-versa. The Mask of Time theory I like the most is that the Mask of Ultimate Power might actually be this universe's equivalent to the Mask of Time. After all, it's already been established as being exceedingly dangerous, requiring an extraordinary combination of materials to craft, and being the object of Makuta's desire — just like the Mask of Time in BIONICLE G1. As a "whole mask", perhaps it might even have more powers than the Mask of Time did in the old universe. Mask of Time and Space, perhaps?
  17. His name is actually Karlof, not Hanlan. He's definitely an antagonist, but maybe not a villain. As far as I can tell, he and Griffin Turner are just some of the Ninja's opponents in the tournament, and judging from some of the book synopses we've seen, they might end up joining the Ninja at some point.
  18. Yeah, as short as Pohatu is, the height difference between him and Tahu is not much greater than it was for the Toa Nuva in 2002, and is actually smaller than the height difference between him and Lewa, Kopaka, and Onua in 2008. I have mixed feelings about him being as bare-bones as he is. On one hand, I like that he has a small and lean look compared to Onua, who is the same height but much more muscular. But on the other hand, I feel like the designers could have done something to give his build a little bit more uniqueness, especially since he is not only the smallest of the new Toa but has the lowest piece count. Some additional 4M shells on his shoulders might have gone a long way.
  19. Really? My sets' Tr. Flu. Green eyes aren't as bright when lit from directly behind, but when lit from above at pretty much any angle they light up just as brightly as Toa Mata Lewa's or Toa Metru Vakama's — and at certain angles, even more brightly. I actually prefer the eyes to glow when lit from above instead of behind, personally, because lighting a set from behind makes the colors hard to see (since you're staring directly into a light source and the entire front of the set is in shadow).
  20. Yes, I know, but I just like to wait for the American television broadcasts. That way I can play my part in boosting the show's viewership ratings to ensure Cartoon Network continues to give it the respect it deserves. Unless I forget to watch them then and have to watch a recording, of course. It's probably a silly policy of mine, but it's one that I've done a good job sticking to so far. Good to hear that there ARE good-quality recordings online, though.
  21. I knew his name ended with an f! "Karlof" or "Karlaf" looks a lot more like what we saw on that one box pic than "Hanlan". I'm not going to watch that video, though, because I'd rather avoid full-episode spoilers before the episodes air in the United States.
  22. Spiders have been a part of BIONICLE since 2001... six-legged ones, too!
  23. The animated form of Lord of Skull Spiders barely looks any different than the set, though. Agent Fusion was talking about it looking different from the one in the comic from the set's instruction manual, which DOES look considerably different. Speaking of which, I'm only just now noticing that the Lord of Skull Spiders' character page doesn't have "comic" or "build" links. Maybe something for the web designers to fix in the future.
  24. The March release date means I can wait until after Toy Fair to come to a final decision about which sets I want to get, but I definitely want to ensure I get all five of the main characters and the four magical keys in one way or another. The ship is one of my favorite designs. I'm a sucker for a cool brick-built boat hull. And I love the look of the Crystal Hollow set. The Treetop Hideaway is a nice design that probably boasts a lot of play value, though I'm a bit wary about considering it a "must-have" because I know that there are going to be a lot of Ninjago sets next year that I want, and I have to think not only about what I have money for but also what I have display space for! It'd be a shame to build a set like that and then have it sit in a box. Maybe over the holiday season I might finally be able to tidy up my room a bit more, though.
  25. There are some similarities aesthetically in terms of a magical society that appears to live in harmony with their colorful natural environment. But like the many Tinker Bell comparisons I've seen, I think there's a critical difference here — the elf characters are not diminutive compared to their surroundings like the fairy characters of those two franchises. The plants and creatures of the Elves theme are all more or less to scale with the size they might be in the real world.
