My all time favourite book would be the Dune serie (with a very high point being the fourth, the God-Emperor of Dune). That saga had it all, really. I then read all of the new ones by Frank herbert's Son but they don't come anywhere near as good as the original ones. They weren't bad, mind you, it's just that the source material was really really really too high to come close... But even if those are my favourite saga, my favourinte writer is, and as far as I know will always remain, Terry Pratchett. His Discworld serie is hilarious and thought provoking and keeps getting better and better with every new book he's writing. Then of course there is Tolkien's work (I'm surprised no one has mentionned him yet). his is quite an exctraordinary compmlete universe he has created (but I do agree with those who say he has quite a pedant writing style that might make it unappealing). I read all of it when I was crazy for it but nowadayw, when I try to re read them, I got bore pretty quickly and wonder how I managed to read them the first time ... (Except maybe for the Lord of the Rings, which I still enjoy from time to time). As for casual read, there's of course all the Star Wars Novels (I've read pretty much all of those that happen after Episode 6) with a marked preference for the New Jedi Order serie which I actually actually find even better than the films. Another serie that I have a soft spot for is Dragon Prince, by Melanie Rawn. For the little story, it had me quite frustrated at first : I recieved the first two volumes of the first trilogy in a very lovely french edition and I couldn't put them down before I finished them. Then I went looking for the third one and Bang! I learnt that the edition company had gone bankrupt and would never release it. Worst, they still retained the rights to any french translation so one would never come out... Luckily, a few years later I became very good in English and finally could read the end of the story in its original form... Anyway, those books have some really fantastic character writing (so far, the best I've ever read, really). The writer goes really deep in their emotionnal states and thoughts while remaining coherent with them all throughout the serie. In the end you could really believe them real, it's incredible. I've never experienced somthing like that with another book. And after reading the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics, I went on a Victorian era spree and read most of the classics from then. My best one so far is Frankenstein for its thought-provoking-ness. But Stoker's Dracula was quite nice too. Jules Verne, oddly enough, I didn't enjoy that much. I did like 20,000 leagues, but then I read "From the Earth to the Moon" and that one, I really didn't enjoy at all. most of the time, it's a bunch of people listing physics, chemistry or whatnot science recipes as to how to make something before shooting a big gun at the moon... And then they FAIL!!! all of that reading for nothing... that really put an end to my liking Verne...

A friend just showed me this incredible and I thought I should share it too.Apparently, it took about 1500 hours to make it... And I definitely can believe it. The animation is top notch, really. (sorry if it was already posted but I couldn't find any mention of it...)

Movie you liked but most people hated...

I think I may fall in that category as well. The thing is, the original book really put the novel in graphic novel, with lots and lots of exposition and insight from the characters, which is something that works great on that medium but gets quite quickly tedious in a film... I have to admit, having read the comic first, my opinion is of course biaised (although, I didn't find that book as fantastic and revolutionary as everyone says it is) but I did find the film quite boring almost halfway through. Ok, the action shots were very well done, coming straight up from the pages, but since they stuck so much to the original material, they didn't come that often to pick up the interest of the watcher... I think taht one of the main thing for an adaptation to really work, is to take into account the fact that you really don't have the same state of mind when you read a book, a comic or when you go to see a film. And I did miss the squid too As for a "bad" film that I love, it's the first Hulk by Ang Lee. So far, I still think it's the best Marvel film they've made. It had great characters, great acting and some fantastic shots (I love that chase sequence in the rocky canyon) and I love the way it was cut, with lots of different angles put together to make it look like an animated comic page and such. I found it revolutionary at the time... Granted, it was a bit slow and the "final boss" comes a bit out of nowhere but still... -
Very neat idea to get people to look at those... There were some really good ones I didn't see before. Here's my top 5 (hard pick, though...) 1 : UCS Chiss Clawcraft by cavedog (I have a little thing for that craft...) 2 : Diorama Snow Speeder crash by Kaitan 3 : UCS Venator by thire5 4 : A-Wing Interceptor by Jerac 5 : YT-2000x by Rook

I believe that the set that was in competition with the Home One was supposed to be called "Palpatine's Arrest", which means it was the scene from Ep III. and TLC said they were only doing cartoonish head for the Clone Wars sets, not the film ones. So technically, it shouldn't have been the same Palpatine fig... But sill... As for the new Slave 1, they could indeed re release the old one in a sort of new set, the same way they did with the X-Wing a while back... Just remove yoda's hut, add a few minifig from another set, add a new painted helmet to grab the hardcore collectors' attention and voilà ! completely new set... From what I heard, the live action series will focus on completely new character not seen in the films. with a few appearances of som well known one but they're not supposed to be at the core of the series... Anyway, I'm quite curious as to what they'll do with the CTT, because there is a hell of a lot to improve over the previous design... So far it's the only set I own of which I actually regret ever buying... (LUL Mace Windu definitely not helping...)

I didn't say that a tablet is harder than a mouse in general. I was only saying that for this particular case. If you use Photoshop, Painter or any other program of that kind, a tablet is definitely a must since it is actual drawing. But in the case of Illustrator, Inkscape or any program using vectors, you don't really draw per se. you define curves and shapes by placing summit points and stretching their tangents and the program calculates the lines for you. For example, if you want to draw a circle, you have to create 4 opposite points (like the 4 summits of a compass) and it will interpolate the curves of the line between them, creating the circle. So the real difficulty here, is placing the points at the right place to achieve the form you want. And that is much easier to do with a mouse than with a tablet...

Well actually, I'd have been more impressed if he'd used anything else but the mouse. Don't get me wrong, the illustrations themselves are really well done. I just don't see why he has to point out the fact that he is only using a mouse, since Illustrator is a program that pretty much only works with that tool... you could use a wacom tablet, of course, but it'd only make your life a real pain in this case...

Review: 7754 Home Oneâ„¢ Mon Calamari Starcruiserâ„¢
yellost replied to valentin's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Da le a tu cuerpo alegria macarena EEEEEEEH MACARENA! AY! Sorry, I couldn't resist when I saw that serie of pictures Nice review. It is a so so set to me. I find the previous A-Wing slightly better (although I do like the idea of the removable engine) but I do like that briefing room... I might try to build it on its own... Since I'll never find that set anywhere here in Belgium anyway... -
Man, that is fantastic. I love the way you achieved both its wedge shape and the roundness of its sides. Great Job!
-
Well you might be happy, then, since it's been announced there'll be a new Ultimate Something Edition to be released for the PC with all the extra content and stuff... As for new sets, like most people said, I don't really see what more they can do. Since most of the game looks like the OT... But I'd love to see more EU sets in general (especially some Yuuhzan Vong ships... but I doubt that will ever happen )
-
Sweet! thanks for the review. That's one hell of a big improvement from the previous set... Shame I won't be able to get my hands on that one...

Nice review, it's one of the very few HP sets I regret missing... As for the knife, from what I've seen on other pics, I think they're supposed to be the other way around in the cone pieces so that they make some sort of spiky surprise trap either for HP or the octopus that seems to be sitting on some sort of ramp...
-
Totally agree with you there. And I really like it's design. They captured it very well. As for the engines, I think there's space enough to put the three missing between the two rows we can see. Since there're only three, it should be narrower and the angle of the pic would hide them. At least I hope so... What I think I will dislike though, is the cockpit... I was wondering how they managed that little window when I realised it's actually one HUGE sticker covering the whole of a transparent piece...

Mmmmm Chrooooome! The small round radar dish is the only chrome piece I have... And it always made me think of a mushroom cap

What you really NEED to try from HL2 is PORTAL. That was one of the most fantastic experiences I had (videogame-wise, that is ). Just puzzle after puzzle with a portal gun that will have you twist your mind in some really incredible ways to get to the next room... Unfortunately, it was waaay too short... around 3 hours play...

Seems to me that TT is makiing less and less of an effort to make a good game... There's hardly any Lego in the whole trailer. Only the minifigs. They could at least used the Envelope tile that exists. Or Something... Anything... It's what I disliked the most in Lego Indiana Jones but after the fantastic job they did on Lego Batman, I was hoping they wouldn't do it again... Still, I'll have to reserve judgement, I guess... Since we haven't seen anything of the gameplay...

nice work. Seeing that teaser reminded me of a few more questions...

Man, what a big disappointment! I mean, there were some nice things in the episode, but the whole build up we've had for the second half of the season just went flop like a wet firecracker... But I really do hope that next season will be the last. Seeing how every major villain has come and gone so far, it looks like Clark won't ever need to become Superman anymore, since he won't have anyone left to save the earth from

Nowadays, I mostly read the Star Wars Legacy serie. And a little gem that is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The art of that one is just astonnishingly fantastic. But in SW, I have all the TPB of The Clone Wars (the previous serie, not the one based on the tv show), Tales of the Jedi and the two Crimson Empire. I also used to read Ultimate Spider-Man, which I absolutely loved untill Bagley left the serie. Then I felt it lost it's dynamic. But the characters felt so true, thanks to Bendis's writing skills. It's just that Immonen's art just lost all consistency. Most of the time, I can't recognise who is drawn in a pannel if he's not wearing a costume. And then there's Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane. I also read the Amazing Spider-Man when Strazinsky was writing, but since that brand new day thing, I completely lost interest. But I do read Invicible Iron-Man from time to time. As for DC comics, I often try to go in its universe, but most of the time, I have no idea how it works. I find its collection of comics a complete mess, with story arc crossing over many different serie that make it hard to follow anything. (my first attempt was the Knightfall serie, that went all over the place in the many different Batman comics and whatnot and from an outsider point of view, it was really confusing... beside, it can get hard to find comics, here in Belgium, so I gave up pretty quick, in fact). But there were quite a few TPB I found excellent like Dark Knight returns and sequel, the Long Halloween serie and the different Joker one-shots like The Man Who Laughs and the Killing Joke. Then there's Allan Moore' league of Extraordinary Gentlemen which is a personnal favourite of mine. (I was lucky enough that my sister made a trip to California last summer, so she brought me back the Black Dossier which DC decided not to distribute outside the US for some sobscure copyright fears). And I'm still waiting for him to finally write that volume 3. And of course there are waaay too many european comics to be listed here (beside, most of them have never been translated or released outside of europe anyway...) but a chosen few from the top of my head would be Sillage (I think I saw it translated in "Wake" somewhere), Universal War One, Lanfeust de Troy, Gipsy, Rapaces (the Vultures mentionned by capt. Kirk somewhere above), Murena, Corto Maltese and many others... Oh and I almost forgot Mafalda, by Quino

Early Star Wars Lego set Collection - your thoughts...
yellost replied to Pete Milligan's topic in LEGO Star Wars
That might be true if it were any other LEGO theme, but it's SW we're talking about, here... And from what I've seen so far, anything SW only goes up, whatever they may be... (just look at those PEZ dispencers ) Still, a nice collection indeed. But as most have said, I'd get rid of the multiples to get more sets -
So far, my personnal favourites are the Tiffany Aching books. I don't really know why, since they aren't the funniest ones nor the best written, but those characters have a little something that makes them stand apart in my mind... And of course, Eric holds a special place by being the first I read. But then again, they're only my favourite by a very thin margin. I love them all. I haven't read all of them yet, (I must be to my fifteenth so far) but they've never diminished in quality, quite the contrary.

mmm, nice he does indeed look better with a black fedora. Now he just needs a classy skull-headed cane to be complete.

Nice review for a really nice set. I'll always remeber it, I had to stop eating for a month to afford it... Fortunately, it was more than worth it

I found a Sandcrawler on Ebay. Unfortunately I won't have time to buid it until quite a while... But I did have a look at the minifig and BEHOLD! there were no less than 6 jawas instead of just 3... And I have to say the new darker 3PO is quite nice... I didn't even know there was a new version (except for the chrome one and so but still...) there even was 3 more heads, too Really nice surprise. Now I just have to find time to build the thing...

The Arch could be really nice, but I have my doubt as for the appeal of a life size Carpenter's Cup :p
