  1. I seem to be late to the party. I bought a few SW sets here and there for my boys, but finally decided to buy ISD for me. The build was great and the minifigures are the first I have from this line. The good news is that I have the latest and greatest prints, especially for Vader and the stormtroopers. Hopefully, I will have the Cantina in hand at the end of the month paycheck. After that, perhaps the At-AT and the snowspeeder will be good buys. Then, I have to wonder if I can try to save up for a bigger one such as the Millenium Falcon, Sandcrawler, or even the pricey Death Star. I would like to somehow get the main characters and ships without spending a fortune. Now I have come to find out that the new SW movies could potentially crowd out OT sets from being made, and the rumored list seems to support this possibility. So many sets, so little money and time. So I have to ask the question: Why are the stormtroopers in ISD different from the one in the Ghost set? The Ghost one looks "cartoony' to me, while the ISD ones are really nice. Why not just have the troops be the same across the sets so they can be mixed and matched if someone wanted to do that?
  2. Online PAB has nothing below 10 cents. Those pieces are of course the ones such as 1x1 plates, flat tiles, and some others. You pay a whopping 35 cents for just one 2x4 brick. 1x2 bricks are 15 cents. You can easily beat these prices on Bricklink. Bricklink supplies most of the bricks for my MOCS due to better prices and selection than online PAB The PAB wall in the Lego Store can be a good deal IF they happen to have enough of the part types you need to fill a cup. I sometimes use online PAB on a very limited scale. If I need to round out an order to 75 dollars in order to get the free shipping, then I might get a few bricks.
  3. Although I am fairly convinced the minifig in the new Dol Guldur set will be the "twilight Witch King", there is something about what you said that jumped out at me. In,the earliest reports of the Black Gate set, it was initially reported that the Witch King was in the set. Likely, whoever saw the preview of it did not take a close look a the mounted black figure, and mistook the Mouth of Sauron for the Witch King. It is an understandable mistake since few probably would have expected to see MofS in that set. Did this repeat itself at the London Toy Fair? My guess is possibly so, but probably not.
  4. Awesome job capturing the look and feel of the French Quarter!
  5. The City Advent calendar from last year helped out. If you do a Christmas setup, you could include the tree, Santa, the presents, and the microbuild vehicles could go to the toy section. Also, the table setup and glasses would be useful in the housewares section.
  6. A chess set is an interesting idea. Strangely, it could potentially fill in the most vital missing minifig holes. My ideal chess set would be: Good Side: King Aragorn in his coronation outfit Galadriel as the queen Gandalf the grey and Gandalf the white as the two bishops Riders of Rohan as the knights microbuilds of Minas Tirith and Edoras as the rooks Gondor soldiers as the pawns Bad Side: Witch King in armor as the king The One Ring on a pedestal as the Queen (queen is the most powerful piece in chess ) Saruman and Gothmog as the bishops Mounted Nazgul as the knights microbuilds of Barad Dur and Orthanc as the rooks Mordor orcs as the pawns
  7. It was out on January 1. Yet, we did find out about it long in advance. If one is to be released in the same time frame, we should be hearing about it very soon.
  8. I bought this set for my son as he is somewhat interested in Star Wars. It does seem odd that the name of this is "Death Star Troopers" when none of the four minifigs fit that description. The gunners are great, and I would not change them in any way. The Imperial guards are not too bad, but it does seem strange to have them in the absence of the Emperor. Besides, if you buy the Death Star for the Emperor, don't you get the guards as well with that set? In my mind, the perfect set would have been: 1 gunner, because I agree they are great and do not exist apart from this set 1 royal guard, to augment a collection or make it affordable for those who cannot buy the big sets 1 Imperial Navy Trooper, because I know I saw them in the movies on board the DS 1 stormtrooper, because the Death Star is full of them, they are troopers, and you can never have too many of these
  9. As someone who came out of my dark ages two years ago and finally bought an original trilogy set, I certainly hope to get some more of the ones currently available. Death Star is pretty expensive, and it is beginning to become outdated with the much better prints on the latest minifigs, so I am unsure about getting it just to ensure I end up with most of the main characters. What I would like to see: (1) A new UCS Millenium Falcon, for the same reason as other posters have indicated. UCS could mean it is a collector's item, but it does not necessarily have to mean that is the only time it will ever be available (2) A set with Tusken Raiders. I know Lego has made these before, but it has been a while. (3) Something with the Emperor (other than the Death Star), perhaps either another release of the Imperial Shuttle. If they did make the scene from Episode III where he duels Yoda, that would suffice since by then he already basically appears as he does in the OT. (4) Another Tie Fighter. In fact, I think that the Tie Fighter, X-Wing, and Millenium Falcon together should be evergreen sets, with the occasional update from time to time.
  10. Typically, "Out of Stock" means that the item will be resupplied and "Sold Out" means it is gone. The recent examples of fairly quick runs to go directly to Sold Out would of course be the Mars Rover and to some extent the advent calendars from last year. Right around Thanksgiving last year, the calendars were gone from Lego stores and S@H. On a side note, if you have your heart set on one of this year's calendar's, it would be best to get it when it comes out. Now there is a ray of hope. I can think of one set that did go to Sold Out, but did eventually get another run: Architecture Studio. So it is not impossible. Research Institute apparently has gotten a lot of press and attention. If it was meant to help draw a new audience to buy Lego, it obviously cannot succeed if it is already gone. I would imagine most of the people who bought the sets are avid Lego collectors/builders to begin with and were well aware of the release dates.
  11. Travel Astronomy Photography
  12. Well, it looks like we have the new Mars Rover. I guess in the future we will see a lot more midnight purchases and lines at the Lego Store before opening at the end of select months. What have I learned from this, if you cannot live without the set, get it ASAP. Fortunately, neither Exosuit nor this set were priorities for me. However, it is a bad break for people who needed a little bit of extra time to get the money together.
  13. I asked in Dallas. They are not of what or even when the next release is, but they are looking forward to it as well.
  14. This looks like a nice set. I have feeling this will be popular this year along with the snowspeeder, especially when we get toward the holidays. So I have to ask, does anyone who has this/is planning on getting this hoping for at least one good snowfall so you can actually put this thing out in the snow? I live in Fort Worth, TX, so a good snowfall would be lucky, but if it happens, that would make a nice photo shoot.
  15. Imperial Star Destroyer. Had this thing been available 35 years ago, every kid would have begged their parents for this.
  16. Went to the Lego store today near the opening. There were about 5 adults in there, some with kids. All of them had anywhere between 1 and 3 Exosuits. Two of them also had the new Ideas science set as well. I guess the Exosuit is going to be a big hit. Hopefully it will not end up like the Mars Rover, but the early run on them and the fact they are out of stock online suggests that many people are not going to take any chances on this one. I stuck with my plan and got the ISD. It looks like all the new Star Wars sets are in as well.
  17. Really wish it was spend $50 for the spaceman and $100 for the Chima. After today's purchases, I will not have $100 set aside for next month just to get the one white spaceman. Oh well......
  18. I wonder if a Lego set would be contraband in a prison. Perhaps they should let her keep one of the police station sets in the cell
  19. I am quite partial to the bail bonds building myself. I could buy a city police station, modularize it and place the bail bonds structure next to it. Not quite sure if there is an established pattern yet, but if it does end up being a commercial building, then there is indeed one.
  20. Palace Cinema was actually my first modular purchase almost a year ago. It has a great color scheme, and has some nice interior details such as the snack counter and the projector stand. The marquee sign is outstanding in my opinion. It certainly inspired me to get the others. All I am lacking from the current available ones is the Town Hall. It is not bad in my opinion, it is just that to pay the $200 plus tax, there would be no other Lego building or collecting for a stretch. I think the possibilities for modulars are practically endless. If they continue to release one a year, it would take a long time to ever seem like one set is a repeat or too closely resembles an earlier release.
  21. We know three things about the BOFA set: (1) We know Dain is in it (2) Because Thorin is not in the Lonely Mountain set, there is a very strong possibility he will be in it. (3) There was a report of a molded creature in it. Let the speculation begin whether or not it is a warg, ram, eagle, large bear, stag, etc. If it does not have a lot of minifigs, then Dain and Thorin likely occupy two slots already. You do need at least a couple of bad guys. My guess would be one generic orc and one named one, either Bolg or a repeat of Azog. As much as I would like to get a generic Iron Hills dwarf, it does not look good with two other dwarves already in the set. This is a set with the title Battle of FIVE armies. Dwarves vs orcs is a bit less than that. I would think you will see one elf, maybe Thranduil. Don't forget, we could also get the obligatory Gandalf. The trailer also gave Legolas and Tauriel some focus. I just do not see this as an army builder set. Except for maybe a generic orc, look for main characters, ala Black Gate.
  22. A bank would of course be welcome. I can think of some old turn of the century bank buildings that would serve as a good inspiration for such a set. You would have the teller windows, a vault, some loot, and perhaps some office space. Lately, each modular has a bit of a story that goes along with it, so there could be some type of action implied. It could be a bank, or it could be a detective agency. These could also be red herrings just to throw us off. However, it should be soon before we get some type of confirmation for the next set.
  23. I am somewhat like the dad in the movie, except I do not glue anything together. However, my stuff is off limits. My boys are 5 and 7 and they still have no idea how to take care of toys. If they were allowed access to my collection, some very expensive things would be ruined from irreversible damage. Actually, if the boys were like the kid in the movie, I would be thrilled. The kid was creative and valued imagination. My hope is that the boys eventually learn not to break/lose pieces and begin to take care of things. Once that happens, they will probably get some nice sets from time to time.
  24. I use LDD first, simply because I do not have a wide variety of parts lying around for experimentation. Yet, I must agree that having a lot of bricks would be the best case scenario, because you can use trial and error. LDD does have a couple of challenges. First, as already mentioned, it could offer you a brick which may not exist or is fairly expensive and hard to find. Second, it could allow you to make "illegal" connections. It is also hard to judge structural integrity until you actually build your model.
