Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Except I will soon be competing with people in Denver and Salt Lake for a set. Then an hour after that, the whole West Coast. About 1 in 15 tries, I get in in the cart. When I go to pay, then I get an error message, and the cart is emptied. -

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Done right, it could be nice. Two big challenges though: (1) The "front" could not really be viewed perpendicular to any side. On its own, it would not display well, because you would have two plain sides in view no matter how you looked at it. The two "front" sides with the most detailing would be much smaller than the front build on the others. Then, it would be necessary to have two plain walls to connect to other structures. The back (which would form the majority of the perimeter) would likely not have much detail either. The vast majority of the walls would be rather plain. (2) A lot of people display their modulars in a row. This building would necessitate having the connecting buildings be at a 90 degree angle from one another. Probably not a lot of people are set up to display buildings like that. This is not to say that an inverted corner is impossible. It would really be a challenge to make one that appeals to everyone and not just someone who can accommodate that particular space arrangement and/or has other buildings on hand to hide the bland sides. The best way I know how a good inverted corner could happen would be something like an enclosed square. A large example would be Plaza Mayor in Madrid, Spain. Problem is, you would need to buy a minimum of four to create a closed in square, with the back sides being the most visible. -
For those who do not want to buy the Razor Crest in order to get Mando and the Child, this is the way. Not like the Razor Crest will be available again for a while anyway. I have a feeling this is going to be a highly targeted set online and in the Lego stores on January 1. Get it quick before it falls into the five pages out of six online of items which are temporarily out of stock with no backorder option.

A limit of 1 will hopefully limit this potential problem. My plan is to try and order the Police Station online the second it becomes available. I will likely still go to the Lego store and be there an hour before it opens on the 1st with my son, because he wants a couple of things. If I succeed in ordering, it takes the pressure off of relying on the store stock as my last chance. Last year, there were several people waiting for the bookshop when it opened. We were first in line. I grabbed the Bookshop while my son grabbed the Mandalorian battle pack and something else. When we left the store 15 minutes later, there were still several modulars available and anyone who wanted one could have grabbed it by then. With the known stock problems, COVID, and other factors, I have a feeling it is going to be more competitive this year.

Hopefully available on January 1, because I do not see the initial stock of Police Stations lasting long.

I feel your pain--there are definitely some sets I would like to purchase, but they are not available. Star Wars Cantina is the biggest one. With that said, I am sure the production of sets was planned long ago. Lego released a LOT of new sets this year, and many of them are in the premium Creator Expert category or in a popular theme such as Star Wars or Harry Potter. Had they known COVID was going to hit hard, I do not think they would have released so many new sets. The obvious problem is that you have a sudden disruption of supply with a sudden increase in demand. More people are buying Lego, because it is something you can do at home, even in quarantine. There is not much Lego can do with the limited resources they have available, which is why they are not even offering backorder on a lot of these sets. With that said, there is one thing Lego could have some control over which would help tremendously. They need to allow pre order. You basically purchase a place in line, and when it is your turn, they ship the set to you. That way you know you are eventually getting it and Lego gets paid. Win-Win. Instead, it is a competition against everyone else to try and snag a set before it runs out. Pre order also shows Lego where the demand is. They can prioritize those sets and everyone is happy. It looks like New Years Eve online and New Years Day in the stores could get interesting. I might have enough to get the new modular, but we all know there are only so many of them available. If I cant get one online, then I had better plan on being at the Lego Store early the next day. I have a feeling once the new sets are out of stock, it could be a while just like all these other popular sets that are out.

This. I totally get they cannot keep production up with the demand. However, it really makes no sense to offer a high threshold GWP and have literally nothing available in that price range. I wonder if they should have even produced the GWP sets as that now takes away from producing the sets we would want to buy in order to even qualify for them! The fact that I can not preorder a new release or backorder something is literally leaving money on the table for Lego. I had saved up for Mos Eisley Cantina, something not seen for months now. It was only available for a few days at most. I got the Batwing instead before it predictably disappeared as well. Thankfully, I also got the Elf Clubhouse when it first came out and did not make the huge mistake of waiting for Black Friday to pick it up. It is also a tough time for Star Wars fans right now. I agree that they must really be behind at the factory if they cannot even offer backorder options. A lot of people are doing this, and not just with Lego. My guess is a multitude of PS5 buyers lucky enough to snag one at retail price are turning right back around and selling it for a big profit. I was tempted to try to pick up a few Razor Crest sets as I knew the moment would come when they too would be unavailable and someone would be willing to pay a nice price for one in order to get it by Christmas. I may have to do this next year with the advent calendars. If you can buy several in September and October and then wait until Thanksgiving week, you can probably make bank in no time.

Brick Bank has one on the upper level in the receptionist area next to the bank manager office. It is basically a printed keyboard with an envelope clipped to it. The one in the police station looks much better with its printing.

I think it will be like most modulars. They will fly off the shelves on Jan 1, and it will go out of stock temporarily in a matter of hours to days. If you want one from a store, it is wise to be there before it opens. Only one problem with pairing the car with it as a GWP: see the whole Elf Clubhouse fiasco. A lot of people held off on buying the Elf Clubhouse in order to get the holiday themed GWP sets. Only one problem: Elf Clubhouse is out of stock with no backorder option, and it has been that way for weeks in the US. I can see a potential similar fate happening in January with a GWP. Unless the GWP is available on Day 1, there is an element if risk. If there is a lag between January 1 and the day the GWP becomes available, you risk having the Police Station going out of stock in the same way that Elf Clubhouse has. Due to COVID, the factories simply cannot keep up with demand, especially here in the US. If the modular goes out of stock and you wanted the GWP that bad, you would either have to buy something else and spend enough to get over the threshold, or you would have to try and Bricklink it. Then, you would have to set funds aside for the eventual day that the Police Station becomes available again.

This one also works well as a standalone since it looks good on all sides. Several past modulars have had sides which were not really displayable. Similar to the PR, even the "blank" sides are kept neat and look fairly clean.

Totally agree, and I am in the US. Indeed many of us have wondered for years why there is no modular Police Station. After all, we have the Fire Brigade. There is another bluebird, likely to complement the one in the Bookshop so we can now have a pair. I am still trying to figure out exactly what the purpose of the room is right above the donut shop. The thief seems to be using it to access the donut shop with his dangling donut trick, but it is hard to tell if that particular room has any other purpose. I also noticed that the wall from the police station does not completely go to the top, not unlike the situation with the Brick Bank and the laundromat. Perhaps, this is part of the storyline and will be understood later. All in all, a nice set. If I somehow get $200 plus tax by New Years Day, I might be in line at the Lego Store.

They only revealed the front and side that had the billboard, although confirming parts are printed. Brickset is probably best for seeing pics of the interior.
-
Still running the Black Friday Youtube reveal in the background hoping we eventually get to this and the designer explains the set in more detail. I am convinced at this point there is nothing more I can possibly learn about the Colosseum.
-
Another PS! Let the confusion begin.... I cannot tell whether or not the ads are printed or are stickers. The people on Brickset think they are stickers, but I do not see any definitive evidence either way at this time. I like the colors. The lavender works well with the donut shop. Also, it looks like they widened the donut shop on the interior in order to allow our hands easier access. The jail cell on the other hand, not so much! Not a complaint, but I am surprised there is not a car. Plenty of room on top for the bat signal. I like it. Unless someone gives me money for Christmas, probably not a day 1 buy, but I will pick this one up at some point.

Ok, I must be in the right place then. Yeah, they are going on and on and on about the Colosseum. They guy just asked if we have more time to talk about. I just yelled at the computer, "No, you don't!" -

Ha! I was thinking about this last night. Except I found Bookshop BS to be rather generic. I wondered why they did not go with Birch Books instead, except I realized that would clash with Brick Bank. I guess we will find out soon. Police Station seems very generic and as you say would clash with Pet Shop. Police Precinct would get a good laugh, but then so does BS. We will know soon.... -

The donut shop is going to be a pain to access with my hands. I wonder what is on its second level? The jail cells are narrow too. It does look aesthetically pleasing though. It is definitely presented as more of a small police precinct station than a large station. The Lego Batman Movie Accessory set would be fitting for this. It would also give you three more police minifigs if you need them. The small Bat signal from that set will definitely go on the roof of this. -

Danged if they do, danged if they don't. If you leave out the helicopter, you get a bunch of complaints that it was not included and now the model looks incomplete. If it is included, then you get a bunch of complaints that parts have to be wasted on it and there are already thousands of other police helicopters out there. Usually, only the larger stations have a helicopter pad. You really do not need one for the local precinct. All I ask is that there is enough space to put a Bat signal. -

It could be a police station, even with the type of year it has been. There was a point made several posts back that modulars have to be planned well in advance, so the designers could not have possibly predicted this year's events. That would leave Lego with two choices (1) release the set anyway (2) not release it, and there is no modular. To me, #2 sounds much worse. In the event of a modular police station, I would envision a detailed Gothic exterior, probably fit for Gotham City. The officers would have the old style hats, and a car would probably be included. It would look something like the police car in the Pixar Cars series. Expect a small donut shop and a breakaway feature in the cell block. -

I totally agree that variety is a good thing, even in designers. While PR (by Jamie) is my favorite, I do like several of the others, especially PC, DD, and BS. In fact, there are a couple of Jamie buildings I am not as crazy about (looking at you, DO). BB is OK, but it would probably not be in my top 5. I think Jamie does well on delivering a variety of designs, but if he has a weakness, I think it is the storyline that sometimes tries too hard. Although as stated earlier, if it is by him and the Italian structure is actually going to be the modular, I am hoping it is a sculptor's studio, and the various sculptures inside help provide the storyline. Statues and other sculptures would have to be in there anyway, so it is not like it would really be taking away from the whole thing. Some of the features in post-Jamie modulars have really been stellar. Downtown Diner has a fantastic winding stairway build, and it captures the feel of a diner fairly well. I also really like the colors in that structure. The bookshop might be my second favorite of the modulars. The split design is welcome, and I do think it brings some new features to the world of modulars. I do agree that the rotation of designers has had some largely positive results. -

IF this is true: Perhaps the art is not related to painting (been there , done that with PR). When I think of Italy, I think more of sculptures. Think: Roman fountains, Florence and its famous classical sculptures. The sculptures themselves could be used to tell the story, because we all know in a Jamie Berard building, there has to be a story. They could be done in a way which is meant to be amusing, as was intended in money laundering or cookie prohibition. Although I think having the sculptures themselves be the storyline is less intrusive than designing an entire cookie kitchen or laundromat just to fit the joke. It could actually work well this time. It could be either a sculpture gallery or a studio. The secondary food source could possibly be a gelato stand. As for the small vehicle, my hope would be that it is very small. I get the need for one in FB and CG, but the others-not so much. Probably not a scooter, since that already showed up in PR. My guess would be an "electric" vehicle to promote going green. $200 for three stories seems to fit with the way the modular line is going.
