Thanks ! No this type of transversal displacement for the axle doesn't exist in the real world because of the needed ripping of the tire at zero speed. This is only use here to place the center wheel on the same curved path forms by the outer wheels to have equal radius to the center of rotation which limits the difference of ripping on each wheels during the corner. As you told, as soon as all axle share the same center of rotation, the ackermann gerometry is fine and the vehicle will rotate arround this point (more or less). The fact the wheels do not follow the same path can be a problem, on large vehicle or with heavy weight (to keep the wheels in the tracks form by the first wheels) but it was not the case here in LEGO, just a fun function, that's all. -

Small update on the Warthog M12 : After many demands, I have released the specific instruction for the motorized turret. It is available for free on Rebrickable and Nico71. The guide for installing in the warthog is included in the instruction, basically removing some panel on the beds to attach the assembly which is compatible with the news positioning of the IR receiver but may require adaptation if you use third party electronics. ------------------------------------------ Then, here is my new creation ! An alternate model of the new released set 42180 Mars Crew Exploration, as a space garbage truck : The Creation : In the year 2180, we have now Mars Colonies, but we still have waste to collect to recycle. Here is the answer : the Space Garbage Truck, with its front loaded grabber, rear bin with tailgate and sliding blade, it is the perfect vehicle to collect the waste to to drop them off at the waste reprocessing plant. It is equipped with two steering axles plus a central sliding one to operate with a minimum turning radius, ensuring a quick and easy access in the polluted colonies. So, Space Trucker, take the lead and help the Mars Colony to handle the waste logistics ! Quick Functions Showcase : Specs : 🧩 1028 parts, 📐 Dimensions : 39cm (L) x 19cm (W) x 17cm (H) Only made with the parts of the LEGO Technic Set 42180 – Mars Crew Exploration Rover Front loaded grabber with one lever and adjustable claws Rear bin with manual tailgate and two-way winch operated sliding blade Two steering axles plus a central sliding one to operate with a minimum turning radius Packed with many details and accessories to play with No spare part used, no flexible parts cut, can be build with the sticker applied Links :📲 More pictures, review, preview instructions [nico71.fr] 🧩Online Bill of Material [rebrickable.com] (spoiler, if you own the 42180, you have everything you need) 🎥 Video presentation [youtube.com] 📕 Bundle discount can be found on my website (-15% for 2 instructions, -20% for 3 on the whole cart)The story behind this model :I am a space lover, so when I see the new Technic Space Lineup, I wanted to make something with it. I imagined a revival of the 8479 BarCode Truck with its particular decoupled claw / arm movement so I reproduce it using lever and connecting rods instead. I do not want to create an articulated dump at the rear so I fix the bin and create a sliding mechanism to push the waste, using the string to make a loop which is wound on a drum. The last function was about the steering. When designing the dual steering without gearing, I use a moving frame inside the chassis, and by connecting this element to the middle axle, it makes it slide to create the perfect Ackerman geometry avoiding the central tire ripping (despite it obviously rips when operated at stop). A pretty fun function, surely totally useless on low gravity planet !To finish, despite the quick release of this creation after the official release of the LEGO set, I have to mention that I had access to the inventory beforehand and started working on it before the official release, so this is not a rushed some-day works, but more some-weeks. Video [1min20] : Let me know what you think about it ! Nico -

I did not post this but I have release the instructons for the Warthog (without the turret) : The Creation :In 2017, I create this LEGO Version of the legendary Warthog M12 LRV, being fan of the Halo franchise. But I did not made proper building instructions. Now it is done ! New (small) creation to celebrate the one year anniversary of my Switchless Machine, which gains 2.5 millions views on Youtube. So I wanted to propose a simpler version of this machine without set up. The model : A simple LEGO Technic Pneumatic Switchless Engine with one cylinder, custom valves, no set up and building instructions. How it works :This engine is built around a single double acting pneumatic cylinder, with air distribution using custom valves. These custom valves are composed of 2-hose loops by cylinder chambers (one for intake, one for exhaust), which are operated by pushers on sliding mechanism, connected to a rod mechanism, enabling to pinch the hose to restrict the air flow. It drives also a inertia wheel with a 5:1 gear ratio to provide momentum to the engine. It is based on a modified version of the one I did 3 year ago and extensively a simpler version of my Switchless Machine, with less parts, fixed ignition offset and modified actuation to use the widespread 11l / 88mm hose instead of rare 11.25l / 90mm that I used before. Links :📲 More pictures, review, preview instructions [nico71.fr]🎥 Video presentation [youtube.com]Please note that you need to have you own source or air (2 bar with constant flow). You can use : 4x pump LEGO like this one Use a LEGO compressor according to the specs Use a electrical compressor like automotive compressor, industrial or electrical pump, you will need to put the air in the LEGO hose with . You can use a ball needle. Use a hand pump with ball needle. The hose for the timing assembly have to be carefully chosen (4x 88-92mm lenght). They have to be soft enough to have an easy pinching and strong enough to handle the pressure. For instance, the last hoses in the 42100 are glossy and hard to pinch, the very old pneumatic hoses from 90's is too soft and do not handle well the pressure. The ideal hoses are those which come from the sets from some year like the 8436, or the 8455, you can use also the hose from the 8110, 42043 or 42157 if they are not the glossy version. The white hoses I use in the video are from Blokbricks which are very similar to the LEGO one and can be purchased at meter. You can use other hoses but you will need to increase the pressure if the hoses are too hard to pinch (like the glossy one) and reduce if it is too soft (like the very old hose). Regarding the dimensions, with the new design, I have tested 88mm, 90mm and 92mm successfully. I have not seen any wear on the hose, even if they tend to keep the shape of the loop some time after dismantling, they recover their original shape without any leak or damage after some time. But I think it can be damage if they rest for a long time on sun-display with no pressure. So if you display this creation, remove the two gray pegs, to remove the two yellow liftarm and so the grey fork assembly on the loop. -

Thanks for your comment ! I find also (with all the honesty I can have) that the kodiak is well design, as well as the foremost or the Citroen traction, it packs several idea and building techniques which make the difference for me. Even if they do not meet the success, I am happy with the result and think that near 2017-2021 my building style change to finally become what it is now. The alternate model is more a compromise between the parts I have and the level of details / polishing I can do. -

Thanks ! Indeed the locking doors on the container is based on the mack anthem system. Very well designed. On the container lock device, this is simply axle which goes up and secure horizontally the container. I added this functions at the end because when the container was on the platform, if you drive forward and backward, the container move and I did not like it. The container is centered on the side by end stop which are bigger and bigger over the travel. For the container arm, it is mostly due to the design itself to be thin as possible (because many thing underneath the arm, like motor, hub, drivetrain, LA etc) and because I had to deal with the giant linear actuator for the second part of the arm, which have to be mostly parallel to the arm and ensuring a 0+90° rotation, plus the motor to embed. So not many available position which lead to a thin design. But the function work great and you can see on the video that the perpendicular beam of the arm is not bending too much (that is why I film laterally without video cut).I also do not fulfill the container with things to avoid adding more weight. Thanks ! The ladder is indeed very cool, very simple at the end but work flawlessly (my favorite function with the tilting cab). I have made more complicated prototype with sliding ladder under the cabin with linkage but as the tracks can pivoted due to the steering, I have problem of collision and play in the linkages. So I decide to use this type of self unloading ladder by attaching directly on the interior of the doors. The only downside is that the length of the ladder is functions of the size of the cabin and so I found the ladder is a bit small. The 42100 set was a very good set at this time to have control+ parts, overpriced for sure as it start the tendency for LEGO to raise the price a lot over and over but when I see the cost of the set with control+ motor now, I am happy to get one. Thanks Mikdun and Lego Tom for your comments, happy that you like the model ! -

Hi ! After some month without news, I come back with a new creation, a big one ! The Creation : The third alternate I did with the 42100 LEGO Technic set – Liebherr R 9800 ! This time, as a Container Handling Vehicle with motorized and manual functions. The creation uses 6 motors for 5 motorized functions which are : All Track Drive with articulated tracks, steering with working steering wheel, 2-section container arm and locking container device (removable locking pins). Here the container unloading sequence : It features also some manual functions like a tilting cabin, openable hood, container doors, and cabin doors with automatic ladders. And as usual, many details such as seats, dashboard, exhaust, air cooler, remote, tanks, lights etc. The model is remote controlled with the PoweredUp App with custom profil (tutorial available in the purchase, example), is sticker friendly (built with in a way to enhance the design and details) and have all the hubs removable (not part of the structure) for easy battery changing (battery can also be changed without disconnecting the cable). Better than words, see in action : Detailed Specs : Only made with the parts of the LEGO Technic Set 42100 (no spare part used) Dimensions : 54cm (L) x 21cm (W) x 22cm(H) / (3kg), Scale 1/20 Motorized Tracks with two XL motors (one by axle) Articulated Tracks with mini turntables Steering on the front axle with a L motor with mini linear actuator and return to the steering wheel Two-section articulated arm for handling the container : 1/ a XL motor with two long linear actuators for the first section 2/ a L motor with a long linear actuator for the second section Rear Locking pins on the platform with a L motor to secure the container Two lockable doors on the container Two Control+ Hubs for a total of 12 AA batteries, accessible freely (not part of the structure) Openable elements : tilting cabin, rear hood (hub access), doors with automatic ladders Detailed interior and exterior : seats, dashboard, exhaust, air cooler, remote, tanks, lights etc. Sticker friendly (built with applied sticker with guide into the instructions) More info : 📸 As usual, more pictures and preview instructions can be found on my website [nico71.fr]. 🧩 Rebrickable inventory 1697 pcs (a bit useless as if you have the 42100, you have everything already) 📕 I propose also on my website automatic bundle discounts for other creations including the 42100 alternates that I have made (-15% for two instructions, -20% for 3 on the entire cart). See : [alternate shop page - nico71.fr] For reminder, here is the complete list of the 42100 alternate I did : 42100 Model B - Vibroseis Truck 42100 Model C - Tracked Carrier 42100 Model D - Container Handling Vehicle That's start to be quite a lot with this one ! So folk, what do you think of this creation ? The 42100 Set as a lot to offer, even if it lack some parts in white, but I am very happy with the result for this one, not too much compromise and lot of playability ! -

Oh ! I personally like the look of the original Kodiak but I can understand that not all people like 🙃 (For snowrunner, the kodiak is a beast fully upgraded, just limit by its wheel in some deep snow/mud but I keep even for Kola Peninsula). Thanks ! Unfortunately no, as the model use the thinner version of 43mm tire, the 30x14 So what you can gain with the offset rims, you will lose with tire width and so the tire will stick out the mudguard. -

My new creation : Chevrolet Kodiak C70 Snowrunner’s Fan here ? Here is a replica of the Chevrolet Kodiak C70 in LEGO Technic, with 4×4 drivetrain, suspensions on both axles, working rear saddle, openable doors and hood, with removable V8 Diesel Engine, and removable cabin. With building instructions for two versions (Control+ or PFS).Original Model :In 1981, General Motors introduced the Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick as a variant of the medium-duty C/K trucks. A Class 7 truck, the Kodiak was developed to use the Caterpillar 3208 V8 diesel and was offered with both single and tandem-axle drive configurations; both straight truck and semitractor configurations were produced. The Kodiak / TopKick were commonly used in 80's as a basis for work trucks, cargo haulers, dump trucks, and similar vehicles which required medium duty torque. It is also a very good starter truck for Snowrunner's Fan, that I am, which motivated me to reproduce it in LEGO Technic.Specs (Control + LEGO Version) : Dimensions : 44 x 17 x 17cm, Scale : 1/17, Wheels : Ø62.4mm, Weight : 1.35kg 4×4 Drivetrain with Geared Hub and Differential (no lock) Dual wheel at the back, with 57360 Hinge Cylinder for the transmission in the geared hub Onboard Servo Motor steering with rack and pinion Fifth wheel (saddle) with locking mechanism for classic trailer attachment Fully suspended axle with links, springs and Panhard Rod Openable doors to reveal the detailed interior Openable left side box Openable hood revealing the removable CAT V8 Diesel Engine (connected to the drivetrain) Removable cabin, enabling to re-use the Class 7 Platform for other truck in same class (like GMC TopKick) Available in two versions : Control+ Motor (Poweredup App) or classic Power Function System (IR remote) Some pictures to display the features : 📕 More pictures, preview and bundle discount can be found on my website [nico71.fr] (-15% for 2 instructions, -20% for 3 on the whole cart)The Instructions : Instructions are step by step high resolution computer generated instructions (300DPI, 190 pages) with partlists, flexible parts, highlighted parts for each step with white edge on dark parts for better readability. A PDF tutorial of 19 pages is included to set up the command profile on the PoweredUp App from LEGO for the Control+ Version (ensure your smartphone is compatible prior purchasing) Example : See it in action : It is the first truck I did with the geared hub and the double wheel at the back so I have to inovate for the transmission by using the hinge cylinder over a dismantle U-join or an 16t gear. Plus the removable cab with segmented hood/mudguard which was not easy but I am proud of the result. Let me know your comment or questions ! 😀 -

Interesting approach to reduce the play ! Did you have a ressource (picture, renders) of the system to be sure to understand and reproduce it to test ? Regarding the switchless machine, I have tested today to power it with a regular hand pump composed of 4x LEGO pumps + and air tank and it works well, it runs as fast as the compressor with about 2 bars, by pumping two times per seconds, so this option is valid to power the engine for people who do not have an other source of air. -

nico71 replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I am interested because if you gear the input or ouput, it gives more play on the diff anyway, so when I search for the good timing point (which means rotate in one way, then other way, then other way etc) the play is a problem to find the correct spot. Maybe it works on your clock because it works in one way only ? For the switch, it is an interesting idea, because the force to push the pinched loop depends of the pressure, and vice versa. If you used new hose (like the one in 42100), the rubber is stronger and the needed force to pinch is higher, but it can accept more pressure in (and require also more force to pinch with high pressure). So it worse to have a look to it ! Maybe with an old pneumatic hose or silicone one which is very soft. Thanks ! Honestly I do not know, both have advantages and drawbacks. Classic switch are widespread, easy to set up, big dead spot, but accept a large pressure without consequence (and so reach high RPM). The switchless 'pinching loop' require more parts, have a small dead spot (it is more constant as the loop open / close gradually), but is sensible to the pressure and required more air flow. It can works at lowest pressure (because the dead spot is small) but do not like a lot fast RPM because of the pressure. I use camshaft with roller / pusher on the switchless version, but there are lot of other mechanism to test for the timing, in order to reduce the dead spot and increase the in air time. (slidding rod with connector, scotchyoke or something which look like locomotive valve gear). The main drawbacks for me is that it required 4 hoses for 1 cylinders, so if I want to push the concept forward with a L4 or V6 I need a lot of 9cm hose with the same material. Of course If I time the engine correctly (eg 180° or boxer), I can use the same hose for two cylinders but it requires a lot of hose anyway. I dream of a radial engine ! -

Thanks ! Yes I do not like too to modify the pneumatic parts. I prefer dealing with in order people can rebuilt the creations without the need to modify it. for the differential, I have though about but in fact it has too many play, which is a problem when you search for the good timing point (back and forth). I have used in on my Hot Bulb Tractor 10 years ago and it was a bit difficult to find the correct timing because of the play. Thanks ! I use grey bush to show that it can be removed to open the control panel. Shape and color tells the functions, which is important for a didactic model. -

New creation !A LEGO Technic Pneumatic Switchless Machine with adjustable timing, working throttle, with idle mechanism, and openable controls panel. How it works :This engine is build around a single pneumatic cylinder, with air distribution using switchless valves. The switchless valves are composed of 2 hose loops by cylinder chambers, which are operated by pushers with a single camshaft, enabling to pinch the hose to restrict the air flow. The whole valve assembly can rotate around the camshaft, enabling a rotation angle offset between the camshaft assembly and the crankshaft, in order to adjust precisely the timing (ignition point of internal combustion engine). The yellow wheel on the front panel controls the timing angle, with a visual indicator as the yellow connector. The model is also equipped with working throttle, which works on the same principle as the switchless valve, by using a pinched loop to restrict the air flow. It is operated by linkage which is connected to the red throttle with rubber bands. Then, a idle mechanism, which acts as a adjustable endstop enables to set up the idle of the engine, which is operated by the red wheel. To finish, the control panel can be open to see the internal mechanism.Links : 📲 More pictures, review, preview instructions [nico71.fr] 🎥 Video presentation [youtube.com] 🧩 Rebrickable inventory [rebrickable.com] Video : -

Hey guy, new creation ! This is a Mini Slot Machine, based on a previous model I have done 10 years ago. The ball (the bet) is loaded in the machine on the top red entrance with the main lever, it goes though a probability path using multiple triangle parts to create two OR gates. If the ball falls in the correct path, it triggers the hatch of the ball container and you win, if not, you lose your ball. The interesting mechanism is the resetting one. Composed of levers, connecting rod, gearing and ratchet, it helps to reset the position of the hatch and lock it, thanks to the decoupled motion between the lift lever and the gear/ratchet. Enabling to lift and lock the hatch only when it is open. You can find more info , pictures and the building instructions here : https://www.nico71.fr/mini-slot-machine/ -

I talk about the 3D model, instructions, review etc : The Western Star Truck is also available for sale on Buildamoc now, in a complete package (Genuine Lego Parts + PDF Instructions), with or without the mud pump, see : https://buildamoc.com/products/western-star-6900-twinsteer -

Thanks for your message ! @gyenesvi The hood was a bit tough indeed. On the real truck, as you said it is more angular. I have not choose this option, because I want to use the elbow piece for the front grill, because other part like angled connector or just brick look too edgy. So to maintain the homogeneous of the shape, I have chosen the curved panel for the hood. The option would have been to use curved brick or some slope but it made the front grill and the hood more complicated (plus that I do not have the part but I could order them). So this is more a technic approach on it to maintain a low part count and sturdy design to play with it. Of course if the truck was made with regular brick, the level of details and accuracy would have been better, but I am not skilled enough for that (and I had still not the parts ^^) @Jundis I use this constructions rather than the angled connector because it need a bit more angled to touch the rear ladder and avoid the collision with the rear sterable axle. Indeed, the mudguard is not center on the two steerable axle. The front one is going one stud further because the axle steer a lot. And the rear part goes one stud less far to keep the proportion, and because the rear sterable axle steer less, so I have put this small build like a beam to compensate that and have the correct angle to touch the ladder. You can see it here : (despite the build does not touch really the ladder on this picture because it can rotate and I have not checked it correctly 😖) -

Yes indeed, it just need to have AWD to be very capable. It is possible with small construction on the front but no diff and maybe a more complicated steering without variable turning radius (connecting rod and lever). -

Thanks for posting the latest video ! 👍 Here are some additional info about this Western Star 6900 TwinSteer : The model : Specs Western Star 6900 Twinsteer in Lego Technic : Scale 1/20 Dimensions : 48.5cm (L) x 12.6cm (W) x 17.5cm (H) Weight : 1.4kg 1551 parts (truck), 584 parts (Mudpump) Remote controlled using Control+ Hub and PoweredUp App (Lego) (also compatible with Power Functions systems) Drive : 2 L motor with 12/24, 12/20, 20/28 (differential), 8×4 no locking differential Steering : L motor which drives both axle with different turning radius made using variable connecting rod Winch : L motor with worm gearing Suspensions : Tandem bogies with oscillating arms Removal hood with fake working inline 6 diesel engine Openable doors Diesel Mud Pump in container style with optional motorization Links and design process : I have documented a lot the design process on this creation in video as you may know, which includes how I have started the project, choosing the scale, the functions, making the chassis and the bodywork with some tips and tricks. 🎥 Part 1 : Where I build the chassis [youtube.com] 🎥 Part 2 : Where I build the bodywork [youtube.com] 📲 More pictures, review, preview instructions [nico71.fr] The load : The load is a mud pump powered by a 6 inline diesel engine, in a container style. The orange frame can be removed, as well as an optional motorization can be added (see video at 2min for that [youtube]). Instructions : I have separated the mud pump part list from the truck, so there is two rebrickable inventory, one for the truck, and one for mud pump, which is free. https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-117722/Nico71/western-star-6900-twinsteer/#parts (for sale, 10€ exclude Tax) https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-117726/Nico71/diesel-mud-pump/#parts (free) Composition : Building instructions in PDF for the Western Star 6900 TwinSteer (221 pages / 76mo) Building instructions in PDF for the Mup Pump (79 pages / 22mo) PoweredUp App Tutorial for the Western Star 6900 TwinSteer (23 pages / 6mo) There is also a picturing bill of material in the instructions, as well as on the preview on my webiste if you prefer. Final note : This build took me over 2 months to complete, mostly because I have to film a lot and editing to make the design process video. Apart that, I have made several version about the bodywork to find the perfect balance between design and accuracy. I plan to make a last video about it, more a bonus video where I explain the after building work, which is the creating 3D, instructions etc in order to complete the series. Regarding the truck abilities, as you can see it is not a trial truck, but handle surprisingly good on "slightly rough" terrain. Because of its size (wheel base), 8 wheels and weight distribution. In fact this is almost the same feeling about the performance on the real truck in the Snowrunner game : not very efficient, but helped by its size and weight. On very harsh terrain, the 8x4 drivetrain is not enough and the front wheel would need traction, which is not possible because of the scale. Nevertheless, I have replaced the differential by standard gearing to test and it is a bit better in pure-offroading despite the stress in corner. In any case, the ground clearance is the major limitation, after all, it's an off-road truck, but on a small scale (1/20). Interesting fact, it is almost the same scale has the Berliet T100 I have done, I will make a photo comparison, as it shows that the Berliet is very massive ! I hope you like this truck ! it was a nice project to me to documented my design process, and recreate such an iconic truck from this game 🙂
