am i the only one excited about the possibility of trans-clear visors? the visor on that helmet definitely look clear to me... currently those are only available as non-prduction parts and fetch a good price on BL when they become available. crossing my fingers

Much like in the "best spaceship released by lego" thread, I don't think it's possible to pick a "best Space subtheme". Obviously it's based on personal opinion and varies based on context. One's age, what they grew up with, how they define good design, nostalgic value, colours, piece variety, and what they consider the qualities of "the best" all play a factor. That being said... First and foremost I love classic space! I only had smaller sets from this line as a kid, but they were great! The simplicity, colours, and designs are, as Artanis put it, the stuff of "real science fiction". I'm also liking what the Neo Classic Space crew have been doing lately and intend to contribute to this genre soon. After the "classics" it's a toss up between the different lines of the 90's (the ones I primarily had growing up). If I had to rank them it would be: Blacktron 1 and 2, Space Police 1 and 2, Ice Planet, Mtron, and Exploriens. Lately I have been building ships that would fall under the Blacktron 2 category and am lovin this subtheme...The colours and design elements are just great!

Shameless self promotion time... SP3 blacktron torso decal I cheated and tweaked the levels in photoshop a bit to bring out the contrast for the trans-neon green bits, glad you like it! Oh and I fixed the flickr link... but my flickr account is in my signature at the bottom of my posts too!

Thanks for the positive comments everyone! Glad you like it... I would love to make a few more for a possible fleet, but unfortunately don't have the parts. There is a group over on flickr dedicated to blacktron 3 with building guidelines, colour schemes, and various stylistic "rules". My ships tend to reflect those of blacktron II, but because Im using the new blacktron revival torso and modern parts I label my ships BT3. adam

Blacktron 3 Accipiter Attack Fighter No real backstory... just wanted to do a simple swooshable mid-size fighter. more on flickr

LDD and Physical Bricks Blackrton 3 Accipiter Attack Fighter This contest was great because I do the majority of my building using LDD in the design process then eventually convert my models to actual bricks. Due to limited space where I currently live I have no room for my physical bricks... LDD provides me the creative outlet to design what I want with the option to eventually build the actual model when I get my hands on the pieces. more on flickr

just awesome! great cockpit section and little details... this looks pretty accurate!

well apparently i missed this in the city 2010 thread. thanks Pi for pointing it out... sorry for the reposting. (still looks good though) According to Brickset, in addition to the new 3221 LEGO Truck, it is supposed that there will also be a special Toys "R" Us version (Set 7848) of this set, to be released sometime during 2010 http://www.flickr.com/photos/41215338@N04/4696782754/

very nice! It's such a clean design and very true to life! Love the colours and the details you have packed in like the spare tire, transmission, and rear stabilizers. As mentioned already, that brick built hopper/dumpster is great!

very cool! reminds me of unitron I can never pull off nice hardsuits...

thanks for the in depth review cakeman! still not sure how I feel about this set... I don't hate it, but much like feanor it still has to grow on me. As for the SP3 helmet, yes they are a terrible fit. If you remove the airtanks the helmet sits lower and looks alright, but this is indeed a design flaw.

Thanks Krystal King and M:tron engineer! Feel free to use whatever you like, Im glad to hear that my builds are inspiring. I always appreciate inspiration credit, but am one of those builders that strongly believes lego is about collaboration and "improving" or "borrowing"designs and techniques from other builders to create your own MOCs. I have always tried to emulate certain styles of other builders with my creations, asking my self how would ___ do this? I think these mechs would look fantastic in the classic space colours... maybe a blue mech with trans yellow, or gray with trans green. Or even the more recent exploriens colours of white, trans blue, and trans neon green, or Mtron with red/black/ and the same neon dome. Would love to see what you come up with!

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, Im glad you like it! I'm glad you think I have captured that "retro" feel. That's what i was going for with this one using that big bubble cockpit and small simple arms!

very cool pod like ship! I like the overall shape of this, i have seen some ships use the bubble cockpit idea before and i love it! interesting back story too.

Light Class Blacktron recon mech. Also capable of being equipped for fire support / assault duties. comments and feedback appreciated! (more pics on flickr) adam

Thanks for the kind comments! That ship was the first space set, and perhaps even the first lego set, i received as a child... countless hours were spent swooshing it around! shhhhhh (don't tell anyone) it's an old megablocks baseplate from a childhood set adam

A lone blacktron trooper waited patiently for the space agency patrol craft to show up at the remote outpost...

Thanks everyone! It's great to see so much interest in blacktron... for those of you that try your hand at blacktron mocs make sure you post them for us to see! That was actually something I had in the works on LDD before I went with the BT2 colours. However I only have a limited selection of trans yellow cockpit or glass pieces so I decided to go with the BT2 trans neon green to try and make use of those saucers. Here is what the Neo Blacktron version was going to look like. (and possibly still might pending another bricklink order) adam

For your first sci-fi moc this is absolutely great ! I too have been shifting away from city and into other genres lately and enjoyed the experience... MechWarrior 2 was the first game I remember playing on my Macintosh as a kid and actaully becoming really immersed in, and the Mad Dog is easily one of the most recognizable mechs. I love the overall shape you have created, and the colour blocking. I also really like the way you constructed the leg/knee area joints. I would however agree with SNobleJr that the arm connection with the hinge brick could use a little tweaking. overall great work! keep up the sci-fi building, would love to see more!

SP3 blacktron torso decal
slacker int replied to slacker int's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
No worries! Now that the design is made I might actually use these myself for a neo-blacktron project I have in mind. -
Thanks for the positive comments everyone! There are a few more pics of it on my flickr stream if you want a closer look. I loved the black/trans neon green colour scheme of Blacktron 2 as a kid and have been wanting to incorporate those ufo pieces for a while... I set out to design something that TLG could have believably produced and knew the design of the MX-71 would look great in those BT2 colours and so the Condor was born. Forgot to mention, This was also my first time trying out custom decals. I printed a slightly modified BT3 logo on the wings that I came up with. thanks MicroM for the kind words about my heavy weapon specialist! Here's hoping for a blacktron revival!
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone, glad you like it! @ black rabbit and apollo I have a few designs made up in LDD for a cargo container, a troop carrying compartment, and a little vehicle, but can't seem to find enough pieces to get something made I'm happy with, and don't want to put in a bricklink order at the moment... so for now unfortunately there is nothing for it to carry. (I'll keep trying to get something together though)

The BT3 Condor draws its inspiration from the Mars Mission Recon Dropship. Operated by two figures, has a ramped storage compartment behind the cockpit, movable wings, movable rear thrusters, and the ability to carry large amounts of cargo. hope you like it Comments and feedback appreciated! adam
