Slaving two PF-M motors
DLuders replied to roamingstop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
OK, you want to use either the 87058 "Train Base 6 x 34 Split-Level without Bottom Tubes" (which comes in the new 10219 Maersk Container Train set), or the similar 2972 "Train Base 6 x 34 Split-Level with Bottom Tubes" part (pictured below). Those big holes do offer a tempting route for driveshafts. It may be possible to have two Power Functions (PF) Medium Motors deliver all of their power in one or two driveshafts (all in a 6-studs-wide package). I think that it might be better to have the two PF Medium motors pointing OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS on the lower, central platform, and using a simple 90-degree bevel-gear arrangement to drive the bogey wheels. The driveshafts would running through the big holes in the split-level platform. As you noted, an 8869 "Power Functions Control Switch" would be necessary to change the direction of rotation for one of the motors. -
My mistake! Here is what the Lego Technic Designers Blog says: "Just as last year, we have received a number of AFOL (Adult Fans of LEGO) creations. As always, these adult models, and others will be selected for a full round of voting in a pure adult-submission finale which will run after the grand finale in October - the winner will receive the same grand-prize as for the current competition, which is the full LEGO® Technic 2011 product assortment (all new models in 2011). "Here are the AFOL entries from March: "Uploaded by simcer: "Uploaded by jovel1974": The blog entry (dated May 1, 2011) also says: "It's May and that means we will kick off a new round of the LEGO Technic challenge. This time the theme will be Helicopter of the Future, so get your imagination started and start building! "When it comes to how a helicopter works in present day, have a look at the blog posted by Lars. Try to imagine how a helicopter will work and look like in the future. "We hope to see a lot of cool helicopters! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "In the first rounds of the LEGO Technic Challenge we have seen people trying to cheat, by posting images of models that were not their own creations. This is of course not acceptable and the images have been deleted from the competition." [As Mahjqa noted] "To prevent this from happening again we have made a new rule: You need to print out the LEGO Technic Challenge logo, found under downloads-posters, and place it next to your model when photographing it. An alternative to printing could be to take the picture next to your computer screen, so the LEGO Technic Challenge image is visible. This way we can be sure it's your own creation and not somebody else's found on the web. "The idea with the LEGO Technic Challenge is that you should challenge yourself to build something new. When we go through all the model entries every month we see a lot of cool creative models. So let’s continue that positive spirit in the competition."

lego Tatra 815
DLuders replied to bricky300's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Your Tatra 815 looks nice! On Flickr, you wrote, "This Lego Tatra Trial truck has skid steering and each side is powered by one xl-motor. It has one m-motor, which powers the winch." I like how it handles the concrete curb "cliff" in your first video. -
I am not sure whether AFOL entries are even being considered during the Lego Technic Challenge 2011. After all, there have been no AFOL finalists posted on the Technic Designers Blog (like last year). So, if this competition is for 5-18 year olds, "Leg Godt" = "Play Well" (no cheating or plagiarizing). It would be refreshing to have 10 original finalists without having bogus submissions.

@ Alasdair Ryan: When replying to a post with LOTS of HUGE PICTURES, please do not use the "Reply" button WITHIN that post. Use the "Add Reply" button at the BOTTOM of the entire string of posts. That way, you won't be DUPLICATING the same HUGE PICTURES a second time. As it stands now, there are two posts that take up an entire page and LOTS OF BANDWIDTH. -
Your creations are nice, but they are a bit pricey for their size. I like the last one (Batman's Tumbler):

help with LDD and DBM
DLuders replied to ENeuman's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
@ ENeuman: Nobody (except you) can see the the contents of your Brickshelf folder because has not yet been "made public". It is doubtful that the Brickshelf moderators will review your folder until Monday. You could "deeplink" your LDD .lxf file so that we could immediately view it. See how to do that here. -

LDD Hoberman Sphere
DLuders replied to Randal's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
This is a job for Superman Aanchir! Are you wanting to recreate Barman's Hoberman Sphere? -
On his Brickshelf gallery, Sergiusabo/ vladsergiu posted 16 pictures, an SR 3D .l3b file, and a link to this of his "...first trial truck, modelled after the Romanian rally truck DAC 16.550 FAE. It is powered by 2 XL motors for drive, each one with its own portal axle, and 1 Medium motor for steering. It features a V10 engine driven by a Medium motor coupled with the drive motors, openable cab doors and pendular suspension with a self balancing system for better off-road stability. I hope you like it and let me know what you think about it."

I made a quick LDD model similar to the one you showed, and I could not get the parts to fit tight either. There must be a "bug" whereby the Technic 1/2 Bush cannot slide all the way tight against the center of the brown pieces. There is this small gap in LDD that cannot be closed (but CAN be closed using real bricks).

Studs Vs Smooth
DLuders replied to Ape Fight's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't think that "studs are dead"; they have a place in certain Lego Technic constructions. If one considers Sariel's Lego Jeep Wrangler Rubicon trial truck pictured below, he used the old-style Technic Bricks in the truck bed (where certain items needed to be attached). "Studless" building is more versatile and realistic-looking. Sariel's design uses the strengths of both "studded" and "studless" building. -

@ Chaosof99: You lucky dog! Getting a 19-year-old set for so cheap is not easy to do. You can check the 8868 Parts Inventory to see if you have everything. -
Ultra car
DLuders replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
WOW, this is really special! The side-to-side adjustable ride height is unusual. I like the X24 engine and the big Technic Turntable steering wheel too. Is your MOC a model of a Mitsubishi SUV? -
@ Superkalle: The rotating speed of the 4999 Lego Vestas Wind Turbine could be set by a 2868b "Electric, Train Speed Regulator 9V" unit, powered by a 70931 "Electric, Train Speed Regulator 9V Power Adaptor 230V (Continental European type)." On the electrified 2 x 2 plate at the "north end" of the Train Speed Regulator, connect a 60656 "Electric, Power Functions Extension Wire with one Light Bluish Gray End (length 20cm)." The Light Bluish Gray end of the wire connects onto the Train Speed Regulator, and the Dark Bluish Gray end connects to the (Dark Bluish Gray) Power Functions Motor wire. There is a longer version of the Extension Wire -- the 8871 "Power Functions Extension Wire 20" (50cm)." I don't know anything about "silencing" a Power Functions motor.

On MOCpages, Sheepo recently posted many pictures and several YouTube videos of "The Boss" Support Truck. He wrote, "This is my support truck for Truck Trial competitions. Built in summer 2008. After building my first two trials truck, I decided to build a support truck for that they together formed a complete Team, named "The Green Team". This truck is inspired by the trucks that came with the team in some competitions like the Rally Dakar. PF elements: - 2 XL motors for drive - 1 M motor for sterring - 1 M motor for gearbox(2 speeds) - 1 M motor for down the rear ramp - 2 IR Recievers - 1 PF Battery box Total weight is 4.1 kg, load up to 5.5kg, and has around 2500 pieces. To serve as team leader, he can get in to another team member. The back door serves as a ramp, down it in seconds with the remote controlled." -- "Putting TheIndependent inside TheBoss during the Hispabrick 2008. For more information please visit http://www.sheepo.es ."Detailed pictures of the Chassis, Front Axle, Rear Axle, and "Loading Trials" are on his Brickshelf gallery. -- "Truck of the Green motorised Team with PF, designed and constructed by Sheepo. All the information on this and other models of you can find it Sheepo in: http://blog.electricbricks.com/2009/12/exposicion-lego-technic/ ."

@ Enilder: I'm not sure why you are asking AFOLs to break open their SEALED box (and thus reduce its value), just so you can see if you have a complete inventory of all of the parts. Who cares if parts are in a bag or not, just as long as everything is there?

Flower arrangment Mother's Day
DLuders replied to persnickety's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Yes, stay in the "good graces" of your wife/girlfriend and give her a dozen roses on May 8th! You can also search for various Mother's Day and Flower LDD .lxf files on the Lego DesignByMe Gallery. -
Rotacaster Omni-wheels
DLuders replied to PavementPilot's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
RJ McNamara reviewed some "new, improved Rotacaster Omniwheels" on April 13th, 2011. Here is the link to the link to the US & Canada distributors of the Rotacaster Omniwheels. Zblj made these 3 designs for "Mecanum" wheels in Lego Digital Designer. These wheels could possibly be used for a Killough Platform: -

Here is the Lego-Compatible Rotocaster Omniwheels webpage webpage, but it says that they are "Available direct from Rotacaster Wheel Limited Australia only." There was a previous Eurobricks post talking about them. -
