It's not so much a Lego reveal as it is a Star Wars reveal - that was the first time anybody got to see the character and its design and description at all, in any medium.

I love how the Ghost is looking - the final design is spot-on accurate to what we've seen from the concept art on the web, and I find the design very appealing. With the clean white form and the sand/pastel highlights, it looks like a lost McQuarrie design. I hope there's at least a bit of an interior, and it'll be nice to see how it looks once the Phantom is slotted into it. What I'm really looking forward to is seeing the inside of the Star Destroyer and the final design of the Cantina Band aliens. I hope at least a few people will be able to sneak some pictures out so we don't have to wait another three weeks for the NYTF

My grandparents have a scratching post that looks like this, it's made of twine/wicker/whatever wrapped around a relatively springy metal core, and has a pink pom-pom on the end for the cat to play with. It's a fairly common design that, unfortunately, looks phallic when rendered in Lego. Context is everything, though, when ti comes to what's appropriate or inappropriate. While adults can notice the resemblance, to a little girl it'll just be a scratching post. There's all sorts of things that adults get upset over their kids seeing, but without the knowledge of an adult it's impossible to notice the 'innappropriate' things in the first place.

Yup, we can usually expect some pictures from the Nuremberg Toy Fair, though it's less dependable than the New York Toy Fair on that front. We should be seeing some pictures from it by the end of next week. As someone who pretty much never collects City or Creator, I'm really interested to see how this set ends up. I've always been intrigued by the Modulars, but I've never been able to afford anything other than the Mini-modulars. A set that combines the attention to detail of the modulars with the smaller size and affordability of Creator seems very promising to me. If they end up starting a new 'baby modular' line, that would be amazing.

Going through the movies... -Episode 1 has kinda been done to the fullest extent it can be. It would be nice to have an all-chrome Naboo ship, but that's never gonna happen for a price anybody in their right mind will pay. Chrome is just too expensive, and pearl silver just won't cut it. -It's been said before, but the arena scene in Episode 2 really needs to be done. I think the techniques Lego uses to produce brick-built creatures (especially in light of the new tiny ball-and-socket system) have progressed far enough to make those creatures feasible. It's a very iconic scene, and important to the plot of the movie; it'd give us a place to put all the Battle of Geonosis stuff they gave us last year. -The Coruscant speeder chase with Zam Wessel is one that's calling out for a revamp. It's really weird they haven't done it, because we all know that TLG loves to produce vehicle-based sets. -The Senate chamber battle from Episode 3 could use a playset. A chunk of framework with three senate pods on it and then a tiny version of Palpatine's central thingy would do. They could throw in a few Senate aliens for good measure - maybe we could get some Lego ETs! -The Mustafar battle also deserves better interpretations than what we've gotten so far, when it's played second string to a dumb lightsaber battle gimmick in 2005 and yet another Jedi interceptor in 2012. I'd love to see what the designers could do with a $100 price point and a few BURPs to get it up to size. Lots of potential play features there. -From Episode 4, I really want to see a new interpretation of Darth Vader's TIE Advanced that brings it up to the standard set by the phenomenal 2012 TIE fighter. The one from 2009 is looking a little dated, and I never purchased it at the time. -The Lars homestead is an iconic setting that they've never produced, probably because it doesn't have any potential play features whatsoever. I could see a small version being included in the upcoming UCS Sandcrawler, if that rumor turns out to be true. -With the new Cantina coming out, a battle-pack style set of cantina aliens to populate it would be nice, though that's just a pipe dream - TLG would never give us that many molds and prints without distributing them between a half dozen $50 ships. -I also want another battle pack that's just Stormtroopers. They haven't gotten their due lately; they haven't featured heavily in a BP since 2008. They didn't even get a Planets set! I just got my Death Star and want to bulk up the Imperial presence on it some. -Speaking of the Death Star, it's widely believed to be on its way out, and it's been basically the only representation of a ton of iconic scenes from Episodes 4 and 6. Obviously a lot of AFOLs have owned it for a long time, but what about kids who want to have their own trash compactor? Or landing bay? Or detention cell? Those are all incredibly iconic scenes that the prohibitively expensive 10188 has been monopolizing for six years (not that they'd ever been made before 2008). Once the set finally retires, it might be nice for some of those scenes to get standalone interpretations. -For Episode 5, there's only one answer - another Cloud City playset. It was ahead of its time when it was released in 2003, and since then the entire setting has been completely neglected in favor of more Hoth sets. Imagine how great a new version of that set could be! It doesn't even have to be all one set like it was the first time - divide up all those vignettes, play around with the sizes, and you've got half a wave of sets. -Ok, so maybe not only one answer; a proper Yoda's Hut that's not playing second fiddle to an X-wing would be nice, too. It'd be a nice chance to do a Force Ghost figure, too, in Obi-wan. You've shown us you can do trans-blue arms, TLG - it can't be that much of a stretch to do the rest! -And lastly, Episode 6. TLG's done well by this episode, and it's probably the best documented in Lego of the lot. The only thing I can think of is, again, the scenes that the Death Star has taken, most particularly the Emperor's throne room. That's probably the least satisfactory of the vignettes aboard 10188, because it's just too small to fit everything in (though the designers did a very good job with what they had). A larger playset would be awesome.

I'd love to see a full-fledged Christmas Tree Farm. The little stand that's out as a bonus set right now is cute, but stands aren't the full extent of things. I don't know how widespread they are, but in my area there's a number of Christmas Tree Farms that grow pine trees in huge rural lots, and generally have little barns as gift shops. Some have petting zoos, too. The way I see it, there'd be a small, red, barn-styled building about the size of the Bakery, with some gift-shoppy things and snacks inside, maybe a porch with a rocking chair on the front. The gift shop could have cookies, hot chocolate, and lots of Christmas ornaments for sale. The ornaments could then be taken out and put on the trees. Then there's four rows of pine trees on brown plates, with some cheese-slope snow for decoration The first row is some that are quite tiny, maybe using this piece upside down the way a lot of MOCcers do. The next row is maybe four small pine trees, the row after that four big pine trees, and then finally three brick-built trees that are even larger. The rows can all be put right next to each other modularly or spread out separately. The brick-built trees could have some play features built in; for example, a pull-out peg to 'chop' them down, and maybe tiers of branches assembled using this piece so that they can be 'swept up' and stored in nets. Speaking of which, the remaining accessories would be a table with nets designed for packaging big trees for transport home (like this thing, for those unfamiliar), one of those tree-shaking devices designed to get out spare needles, and a family station wagon for transporting the tree home. If there's enough pieces left over there could even be a small petting zoo with some rabbits and goats. The minifigures would be the kindly old owner of the farm, her helpful son, and a typical nuclear family of four to buy the tree. The price would probably be around $75. Know what? I'm gonna go try to design this now. I talked myself into wanting one.

This is an amazing rendition of the Starspeeder from Star Tours! I've been thinking for a while now that since Disney owns Lucasfilm we're due to get an official model of this vehicle sometime soon. I can only hope it's as cool as your model!

For anyone coming in here looking for a direct link to the art itself, it's here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-LEGO-SDCC-SUPERMAN-VS-LEX-LUTHOR-ORIGINAL-CONCEPT-ART-COMIC-CON-6862-/221142452859?pt=Building_Toys_US&hash=item337d1e0a7b Looks neat; the smaller exosuit is much more in line with what Lex usually uses in the comics. I think I would have preferred this version, actually, especially since it includes (gasp!) scenery!, something that's sorely missing in a lot of sets.

This is great! I love how you added interior details like stairs that we usually just assume the existence of when LEGO leaves the back wall off of their buildings. Will it hinge open on the model? And do you have an LDD file of it? I'm sure others would love to add it to their own Orthancs when the set finally comes out.

[Pacific Rim LDD MOC] Initiating Build Operations: Gipsy Danger
Tereglith replied to Tereglith's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Thanks! I'm looking at stills from the trailer trying to find where I can add more dashes of color like that. I've also considered making it closer to Microfig scale if I do any other Jaegers. Two could fit in the head of this one pretty easy already. I'd love to see if anybody actually built the Jokerbot. I'd bet it wouldn't stay upright very well on its own :P Also, the word is spelled with a 'y', but the name is spelled with an 'i'. I would, but I was designing this with the intention of building it someday. Most of the appropriate Bionicle pieces were never produced in dark grey. -
[Pacific Rim LDD MOC] Initiating Build Operations: Gipsy Danger
Tereglith replied to Tereglith's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I'll see what I can do about adding to the hips; I wouldn't want to sacrifice the range of motion afforded by the other semi-exposed joints though. The mech in the film isn't too much bulkier that this one, and its joints are exposed, it's just that its joints are larger in relation to its body than the equivalent LEGO parts are in relation to this MOC. Here's the blueprints image I worked off of: http://comicbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/gipsy-danger-hq.jpg Also, here's the trailer for you and anyone else who hasn't heard of the movie. It looks like it's going to be great: As I watch it again I'm noticing details that I should incorporate into the model... off to revise! -
I'm very excited for Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming sci-fi epic "Pacific Rim", about giant mecha fighting kaiju in the near future. So excited, in fact, that I decided to make the film's main mecha, called "Gipsy Danger", in LDD. Front by Tereglith, on Flickr Back by Tereglith, on Flickr Right by Tereglith, on Flickr Left by Tereglith, on Flickr And in the way that any average person would see it, since the Jaegers are almost 90 meters tall... Low Angle by Tereglith, on Flickr I also wanted to include the interior of the Jaeger, since the pilots are the most important part. I couldn't fit them in the head like they do in the movie, however - that would have required an MOC bigger than me! Open by Tereglith, on Flickr In the film, two pilots are synced together into a single mind to operate the Jaeger. Cockpit 2 by Tereglith, on Flickr All I could fit in was a highly simplified version of the machinery. Cockpit 1 by Tereglith, on Flickr This was my first real mecha build, so I'm not sure whether it'll be able to support its own weight or not - though I'm guessing 'not' is more likely. If I ever acquire the cash I would need to build it in real life I'd almost certainly have to add on some pistons to support the legs. If anybody wants to try and build it, the LDD file is at my brickshelf: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=526069 I'd love to see what it looks like "in the brick"!

Opinions on stuff we need, and stuff that is destroying LEGO
Tereglith replied to Cardinal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
All the sets have been VERY high up on shop.lego.com's top sellers page in the past couple weeks, and the stagecoach is still way up at number four all this time after its release. The advantage that the Lone Ranger sets have is that, unlike Prince of Persia, it's entirely possible to ignore the intellectual property associated with them and pretend that they're just Western sets. In addition to that, the designs of the sets are great on their own terms, not just as recreations of movie scenes. They were selling like hotcakes at the Lego Imagination center in downtown Disney too. -

Opinions on stuff we need, and stuff that is destroying LEGO
Tereglith replied to Cardinal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I know, it's pretty great. I really want to write, like, a short story or a sitcom pilot now about a Mega Blocks sleeper agent working as an undercover terrorist at LEGO. It's such an absurd idea, there's a lot of comedic potential there. At least he's more yielding than most people of his ilk on the internet. Hopefully once we've thoroughly disproven all his negative points we can turn this whole thread into a discussion of how great it would be if LEGO made an Ewok village playset. -

Tereglith replied to Cardinal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
But all the themes you've said you want them to cancel are what fund the artistic and creative themes you're a fan of. No licensed themes = no modular buildings, because LEGO doesn't make very much profit on the big D2C sets. They need all those sets you don't like to finance the sets that you do like. And your worries about LEGO's licenses collapsing and leaving the company high and dry are unfounded as well - There's an 18 month turnaround time on set design, so if for some reason everyone in the world decides they hate Star Wars (which, just a guess here after thirty years and two terrible movies that could have killed the franchise, they probably won't), LEGO can downsize their Star Wars production within a fiscal year. And I highly doubt that every single license would become unpopular at the exact same time, like you seem to be afraid of. And even if they did, it would give TLG one very rough fiscal year before they acquired new contracts and started making sets from new popular licenses. It wouldn't kill the company. I think this just boils down to you not understanding how TLG works from an economic standpoint. You have absolutely no leg to stand on with your claims other than "I don't like these sets, so they should stop making them, because the only purpose of TLG is to cater to my personal tastes", which is incredibly self-centered at best. -
Call me crazy, but I buy the sets that I really want and ignore the ones that I don't want, instead of trying to collect entire themes or subthemes. Maybe you could try doing the same?

Tereglith replied to Cardinal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I'll reiterate that this theory makes NO SENSE, and you should abandon it completely if you want to seem credible at all. If top execs at TLG wanted to stop producing non-licensed castle and space themes, they would just STOP MAKING THEM. I don't see what's so hard to grasp about that. As for an impostor inside LEGO, no one person has the power to push a theme through on their own. All themes and all sets within themes are thoroughly tested, vetted, and put past focus groups, and the designs themselves come from a very small core group of designers, none of whom are MegaBlocks sleeper-cell agents (though that would be a fun idea for a humor novel). And again, if LEGO were doing under-the-table deals with Lucasfilm and the like, the deal would involve just straight-up stopping production, not doing a weird New-Coke style marketing ploy. Like I said before, the new castle line isn't aimed at you, or at me, or at my kid sister. It's aimed at very, very young boys who are too young to enjoy Lord of the Rings. I don't see what's so hard to grasp about that. LEGO realizes that LOTR is soaking up the castle money of TFOLs and AFOLs at the moment, so they're very smartly making a simple, bright-colored theme that appeals only to KFOLs. And have you looked at the galaxy squad sets? Like at all? For my money, this http://brickset.com/...il/?Set=70701-1 is one of the best sets of the year for its size, and this http://brickset.com/...il/?Set=70708-1 is headed for instant-classic status when it comes out. I really don't see what your gripe with the minifigs either, they're a great Lego-ized take on the archetypal space marines, and the bugs are pretty cute. -
Opinions on stuff we need, and stuff that is destroying LEGO
Tereglith replied to Cardinal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
What is your evidence that Galaxy Squad is supposed to be intentional sabotage other than "ew, I don't like it, so that means nobody can like it!" This: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=70709-1 doesn't look like something designed to not sell to me. And guess what, LEGO can make corporate decisions autonomously if they want! They don't have to sabotage their own themes to convince themselves to stop making them, that makes no sense! If LEGO wanted to stop making non-license space themes, they would just stop making non-license space themes, simple as that. -
Opinions on stuff we need, and stuff that is destroying LEGO
Tereglith replied to Cardinal's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Just because you don't like a theme doesn't mean it was "intentionally designed to not sell", geez. The new castle theme is designed to sell to a much younger crowd, it's angling to get the market share that's too young to enjoy Lord of the Rings. Galaxy Squad has some of the most interesting designs in a non-licensed space theme in years. LOTR and The Hobbit are immensely popular properties, and because the designers have been treating them right (devoting actual effort to them, unlike they did with POP and POTC - I don't know why you're lumping Harry Potter in with that, because the last wave of Harry Potter was fantastic) they've created some absolutely classic sets. Bag End is a serious contender for best non-D2C set of the 2010s. It doesn't matter if you personally don't like them; LEGO couldn't care less if you don't like them so long as they sell, which they are. You can't say that it would be a good business decision for them to just cancel profitable themes because you have some unfounded dislike of them. Despite what you seem to think, LEGO's prime customers aren't AFOLs. Sets like the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Carousel are nice treats that they give us, but their main focus HAS to be on things that will sell to kids and/or to non-FOL fans of different movies. You're severely overestimating the impact that the AFOL interest level has on TLG's bottom line, and ludicrously overestimating the impact that your personal patronage has on them. Just because you don't want to buy a theme doesn't mean they should cancel it. Saying that Star Wars should stop making ships is ludicrous, it's like saying that City should stop making buildings. I'm all for them changing up their ship designs, but to stop making them altogether would be idiotic. And to make no ship but the Falcon, the ship with the most different version in Star Wars history, is an unimaginably naive suggestion. Superhero films have been popular since 2000 and they're only getting popular. They're not a fad anymore, they're their own genre of film, and they'll be popular for years to come. They're not Batman Forever any more; studios have figured out how to make superhero films that are also just plain good films in their own right, with legitimate actors, directors, and scriptwriters making legitimately compelling stories. I can eventually see them going the way of the Western, but right now, when Iron Man 3 is poised for a $180million opening weekend domestic, coming off of a $195million international opening, when Man of Steel is revving up to do almost as well, when Marvel films are fast closing in on Star Wars as the third-highest-grossing movie franchise of ALL TIME? Lego would be complete fools to abandon the superheroes theme in a market like that. I will agree with some of your "stuff we need" list. An Ewok village would be great as a D2C set, and I'm amazed they haven't done it already. A City Zoo would be great, though all the new molds required would give it a disappointingly low parts/price ratio. And a historical theme would be great, even if it's never going to happen. But your "stuff that is destroying lego" list couldn't be more misguided and wrong. -
Thanks! It's been growing on me since I made it. The only problem is that the arms are really fragile. The head was inspired by this much cleverer design: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chiukeung/8632948913/ I didn't really MOD the set so much as completely disassemble it and rebuild from scratch using some of the same pieces. I'd say the parts that went into this are 1/3 from the set, 2/3 from my collection. If you want to make your own mansion that's like this, it's worth it to get the set just for the figs, picture windows, and curvy white pieces, but don't expect the mods required to be trivial.

ALIEN Assimilators: Alien Atmosphere Processor
Tereglith replied to MihaiMariusMihu's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Awesome MOC! I love the spiky white tech aesthetic you've created for the aliens, it's a very original look that ties all the alien artifacts together visually. And the premise is really creepy - that minifig does not look happy! You've captured the apocalyptic dread that the best alien invasion stories engender very well with this creation!
