The newer themes look too juniorized
Brick Miner replied to Nonpoint Fan's topic in General LEGO Discussion
i love how this thread has become a history of the word "<insert that tiresome argument>" ;-) maybe a topic not discussed as much as juniorization itself. gives this thread a unique spin on all the other juniorization EB threads from the past :-D in any case, it's obvious i need to do some research on this Town Junior line. thanks for pointing this out to me C22 !!! - BM -
The newer themes look too juniorized
Brick Miner replied to Nonpoint Fan's topic in General LEGO Discussion
hmmm... so your saying that the AFOL community started using the derivate word "junior" before the LEGO company itself ???that seems strange to me... however, it is possible that the LEGO hobby is one where the fans (in some cases) are further along in describing and interpreting the hobby than the company that produced the hobby itself. i have always been under the impression that "junior" was a term LEGO started. it's very rare that a company would incorporate derogative terminology (such as the word "junior") started by the fan community. i guess in the case of the 4+ line it was only fitting :-D - BrickMiner -
The newer themes look too juniorized
Brick Miner replied to Nonpoint Fan's topic in General LEGO Discussion
you know, i have never discussed this topic in full... so i'll give my two cents... let me start at the beginning... i think it is impossible for a set (or single piece) pre-2001 to be considered "<insert that tiresome argument>". juniorization is a term coined when building styles or elements from the younger 4+ Juniors line entered the more advanced 5+ SYSTEM line. that said, juniorization has nothing to do with the perspective of the AFOL. it is that the SYSTEM line's complexity became downgraded when techniques were applied from the 4+ Juniors line... thus the term "junior"-ization of the SYSTEM line. however, i think the only theme that suffers from juniorization is KK2. castle fans have the right to be upset by that line. i mean, other than the SYSTEM scale minifigs, KK2 uses elements and a building style more similar to 4+ Juniors than SYSTEM. thus, it is seen as <insert that tiresome argument>. that said, i don't think any other theme can appropriately be described as <insert that tiresome argument>. and just for the record, the AquaRaiders (2007) line is one of the most detailed lines yet... it is far from junior-ish ;-) i think with KK2 out of the way, we are coming out of the age of "juniorization". and until we see another SYSTEM theme like KK2, the word junioriation should be left out of the SYSTEM builders vocabulary. because, as it has been said before, large pieces have been apart of LEGO lines since the 90's, so that definition alone cannot classify a set (or single piece) as <insert that tiresome argument>. - BrickMiner -
7775 Aquabase Invasion Review
Brick Miner replied to Hinckley's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
this is a great review hinckley... you know, i've spend some time looking at the box at the toy store and had some questions. it has helped me a lot !!! i couldn't figure out what the crain was for... so thanks ;-) and i didn't know what the gatteling guns things were either... i guess its a mystery :-D ;-) i figured out that the sticker sheets were shared between 7774 and 7775, but i couldn't understand why the pepper head is featured on the box, but not in the actual set ??? BTW, i like how you have positioned the squid over the shooting mechanism... looks like a nice way to capture the action for display !!! i'll have to get this one - BrickMiner -
as i mentioned in the pirate forum: :-D just as my interests in LEGO pirates was dwindling to WW, i was looking for a larger spectrum of LEGO discussion, EB seemed like the right community for me. Brickster was discussing WW LEGO and his discussions in Adventurers line was rekindling my interests ;-) - BrickMiner

well, my opinion isn't an award or anything *wacko* :-D :-P i just happen to like history based themes, and likewise history based avatars ;-) -------------------------------------------------- i remember you were working on your PS skills a while ago, how are those coming ???- BrickMiner
-
yes, the top hat is nice... but i think it's the background that really makes that first image "pop".in fact, i think it's one of my favorite avatars in this community, right underneith jipay's pirate avatar :-P - BrickMiner
-
ya, i think that first one is my favorite avatar or yours B *y* - BrickMiner

you know, it is kinda funny... i don't think i'll ever use that head anywhere in my MOCs. Phes has really claimed that face to his own. it was actually quite wise to pick a face that wasn't well distinguished or identifed, like JT for example. actually, any of the named characters wouldn't really work :-/ good job Phes... whether you know it or not, that is a hard task *y* *y* *y* -------------------------------------------------- the minifig head in my avatar image is far to over used and distinguished as the city criminal... it could never be the "BrickMiner" face :-D - BrickMiner

Pic Review: Aquaraiders Shipwreck
Brick Miner replied to dillthepill's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
this looks nice... personally, i was worried about not liking the arms on the sub, but they don't look so bad here. other than that, this set is nearly perfect *y* i do wish there were more "environment" sets for AR, i like the rocks in 7771, but this is even better... seems like a must have for the theme. and i agree with Brickster, the wreckage is better than expected... i especially like the mechanism (WW influences here ;-) ). and like yoda, i definitely want two also *y* *y* *y* thanks DtP !!! - BrickMiner -
Frontier Patrol 6706 Pic Image Review
Brick Miner replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
really ??? and foreign to who, this is eurobricks and a lot of countries are represented here ;-) also, was it listed at original MSRP ??? or was this like a vintage toy dealer ??? - BrickMiner -
actually, that is an official piece all to itself in the RC trains. they are different than the original 9V pieces in that the wheels detach. (reference LEGO.com PaB, each component is sold separately ;-) ) though, im not sure why LEGO made this life-altering *wacko* manufacturing decision, as it doesn't change anything :-D i guess, it just raises piece counts in the sets... makes you feel like your getting more :-/ - BrickMiner

that it does !!!*now on my to-do list ;-) thanks khorne - BM

ah, yes... "direct emulation", i think that term is very fitting, actually.all this comes into even better perspective after taking a second look at your Entrance to the Caves MOC ;-) - BrickMiner -
ok, you have a point... i just love the official elements so much (especially the figs)... and like to see them explored and expaneded on ;-)but you definitely have something here, so go with what your feeling !!! - BrickMiner

thanks guys... as im doing more of these, im finding it challenging to keep each skin unique... with its own iconography and feel/mood. i think the first step of that was to keep this skin's colors unique to space (so no green or tan like history, or blue or brown like pirates, and no concrete gray or blue like town)... so, i felt purple/gray was an appropriate space color for some reason (i actually can't think of a specific reason it feels right, but it just does :-D ). my personal favorite thing about this skin is how the forum topper (purple-y planet surface) matches the planet in the banner.... it really gives you a feeling that you see the "alien" planet far away, yet the surface is closer than you think >:-) :-D i don't know, maybe its just me :-$ anyway the figs were tough. this forum is called "Space and Mecha" so i wanted to incorporate figures that represent both "Space" and "Mecha". i thought space representation was easy with traditional space figures, and mecha could be represented with by the flagship theme, exo-force. however, those two themes don't exist in the same world (at least as LEGO has envisioned these themes). so, i thought an appropriate "story" for the banner would show the traditional space guys reacting of off the newer EX guy. like he was a shock to them in their "classic" LEGO world :-D if anyone finds any technical glitches, just contact me... though, i think i covered all my bases ;-) - BrickMiner

im not sure instructions are nessesary, as the model is simple. and i think we could easily adapt your MOC into our own, solely based on the images you provided.the only thing i would like to see is some of is that digital editing mrt suggested ;-) and possibly the incorporation of some official WW pieces (minifigs, animals, utinsels, etc...). thanks though !!! and again, this is really nice !!! - BrickMiner

i was thinking of mentioing some of the ray harryhausen movies... though i havn't seen any in along time, i remember loving his creatures *wub* - BrickMiner

the problem i see with that hair piece being released in other sets (themes ???), is it's not too versatile (unlike the HP hair piece). i mean what women wear their hair like that ??? only someone in starwars :-Dwhile i do like the mold, i wish it has more possiblities... especially for more modern day settings. - BrickMiner

STAGECOACH HOLD-UP wild west set #6722
Brick Miner replied to Brick Miner's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
nice... make sure i see it when you make it public ;-)-------------------------------------------------- thanks pianodude !!!-------------------------------------------------- BTW, i can't believe i did post this or mention it... becasue of my obsession with using a LEGOish building style, i looked at every LEGO coach made, to acquire a feel for how LEGO would have attempted such a set. the closest "example" for me to use was actually one of the alternate models on the back of GOLD CITY JUNCTION's box (upper right image)... you can see the influence by looking at the 1x1 round plates used as finishing decoration, and the safe configuration in the back. surprisingly, looking at it in retrospect, you can kinda see where my "boxy" influence came from... LEGO itself :-D also, notice how tall it is, allowing the minifig stands inside, much like mine ;-) - BrickMiner -
this is cool norro... the photo effect is very appropriate (looks like crocodile skin :-D ). though, i would agree with athos, the details are a little hard to distingush. though, JT is the only area of the image where this feels "uncomfortable". BTW, what is this image's application exactly ??? - BrickMiner
