Heroica RPG - Quest #77: Your Elves are Better than Ours
Chromeknight replied to Brickdoctor's topic in The Heroica Archive
Ahvialyn, can you stick close to Ellaria? She will help you coordinate with us. Sir Shawe, with Lord Boomingham again. And my Lord Duke, I would say follow Arthur, but perhaps you had best stay out of this conflict. -

Battle Order Arthur Free hits None Boomingham joins the battle Nerwen joins the battle Lady Calaryl joins the battle If others are joining, be bold about it! Nerwen nods I think Copper Fox needs to work on some diplomacy skills with the knights he has been training. Sometimes I deal in absolutes, sometimes I do not. I do not deal in absolutes absolutely. Does that make me sometimes a villain? Or a villain only in part? Are there villians that do not deal in absolutes, so all absolutists are villians but not all villians are absolutists? Are there any absolutists that are not villians? Are you absolutely sure there are not? Nerwen smiles I am sorry Lawrence, it is my nature to be contrary. I sometimes am caught up in discussion for its own sake, and do not consider the feelings of others. -

Nerwen lent over to Ahvialyn and said in a quiet voice. What is your assessment of the warlord? You know doc, given every pre-battle we've used Ahvialyn and her cloak, you'd think you'd just post the stats straight up.... Also, seconded Zepher's comment, especially Sir BįgPårâgön -

If such a machine existed, who is to say it was not used on this Masson, and that he is as much a victim as those he used it on? Perhaps Arthur was right to suspend judgement. Nerwen pauses [Here I must side with your angelic companion. Who can expect consistency from men? Young or old, you are so bound in the brevity of your life that you flicker from thought to thought. I do not mean to seem arrogant, but there is within my upbringing a focus on the larger picture of the world that I have only ever seen one human grasp. Nerwen looks across at Ellaria There is a loss there, and an aching sadness. She is not fire, she is ice, there is a part of her frozen and locked away. That sounds harsh, but there is a brittleness to her strength. -

Put like that, you are right. If a person chooses and has their choice changed, they themselves are changed. The question is, has Arthur owned his new, changed choice and assimilated it into himself, or does it remain an alien thought within him, driving him mad as he tries to reconcile his choice with his perceived self? Had I known he was afflicted so I would have been gentler on him, sought out time to speak to him about it. I had heard that Baba had been to Eubric under a pseudonym, and that she fled capture. I had not heard that she had been let go. If that is the case, there is even less reason to trust him. Nerwen paused as they walked, her brow furrowed. What do you know of the quest that he went on with Nyx? I have not spoken with her for a while. -

Nyx is young as well, but she seems a lot older and wiser. I too value her words. But I am committed to giving him another chance, just as I am to Throlar. That is not because of them, but from who I am. This is the third party I have lead and I take the task seriously. My aim is to complete the quest certainly, but not at the cost of any of our group. Nerwen listens to Boomingham's tale of a mind changing device. We are the product of our choices. And in the end, we must own what we decide. But I do not think our choices are free. Not in the radical, utterly self determined sense. Take earlier. I offered you the axe or the gold. You could not at that choose a dragon. It was not an option being offered. Moreover, your choice was constrained by all sorts of other choices you have already made. You have chosen to borrow money from some, you value mementos of vanquished enemies. You weighed which of those was more important and chose. But if I had simply given you say, the gold and kept the axe, would that have been robbing you of a choice? Perhaps. But I do not think it therefore makes me bad. Though doing it with a technomantic device rather than words and persuasion is odd and you may be right to fear unintended damage. I have not heard of this syndicate, but I have little sympathy for what I have seen of the Wolfgang. -

iI visited the Mopag encampment with Ambassador Throlar. The grand warlords was much as you might expect of one with such a title. Arrogant and paranoid. We could not see much of their camp, shrouded in fog as it was. It was disturbing that we were able to see so little and get no sense of how big a force he leads. As for Arthur. He has proved he has a nimble mind, keen tactically a nod able to engage well with others not of the party who ally themselves with us. But he seems young, so young. And inclined to trip over his own mental feet, causing issues in his rush to prevent them. As I said to Throlar, disloyalty to the party is a grave error, and I think Arthur may be nearly as guilty of that as the dwarf. -

I do not know if you have heard of the 'noble savage'. The idea that one untouched by civilisation is in some natural, primal state. Communing with the land and living a better life for being untrammelled by concerns of culture. It is a myth, society and culture are what make sapient beings what they are. Equally, although no one society or culture is perfect, is the best, and there is some truth and wisdom in all societies, it does not follow automatically that every culture needs to be protected, valued and preserved. The Pongcanis demonstrated that they wished to destroy, break down and plunder others rather than create, build up and enrich all. I had hoped that they had their own forms of creativity and enrichment, but I never saw any evidence of that, so I could not align myself with such beasts. -

Nerwen watches the dwarf hurry after them out the do. I had already suggested that we go after Arthur, I am glad you are catching up. As for dealing with the Mopag, I agree with you. My question is, why did you decide at the end of the battle, when we had almost won to stop us from finishing the dread pirate? What suddenly changed? As for meaning to be here. That does not matter. Intent or not you are currently a hero of Heroica, not simply an individual but a member of a team and a representative of that organisation. I do not want to stifle differences of opinion, but I do want those differences expressed so they can be discussed. Running off by yourself or acting without thought of your fellow party is cowardice, it demonstrates that you lack enough commitment to argue for your point of view. I am certain that I have shown that I do care about your thoughts and can be trusted to engage with them. I would like you to demonstrate your own trustworthiness in following the party's decisions. Nerwen sighs softly, and turns to Lawrence. The elves deserve chances because I like them and will argue their case. I have never suggested the reason was anything higher than that, in fact I argued that any higher reason was self delusion. I had thought it possible I would like the Pongcanis if I got to know them. That was not the case. So I ceased arguing for them. As for the humans, I do not know. But if they had been significant, we would have seen some indication of them, or Indicca would have said something. I do not believe the world is so random that our path is not clear before us. -

Thank you Lawrence. Shall we go find our missing Mage? Nerwen stares at Throlar for a while, her lips a thin hard line. What shall we do with you? Care to explain your stunt with the smoke bomb? -

Nerwen hands Boomingham the axe, scoops the last pile of gold into her satchel and turns her attention to the frozen dwarf. -
So. What's the axe on #77 worth on the open market? Axe of the Minotaur Champion (WP: 40; user is Slowed and Immune to Hastened; cannot be equipped at the same time as a shield; axe) — This axe of bronze and the heavy wood of wyrshro trees from the forests of Kyyyshak can only barely be wielded even with two hands. My instinct is it's much more than 120 gold, but everyone else in the party is passing it over in favour of the gold. I worry I'm stiffing someone on the distribution, either whoever ends with the axe or everyone else. Or am I worried over nothing since no-one is complaining?

Lady Calaryl speaks quietly to Nerwen. Take also this 70 gold. Diola ile. Nerwen places another 14 gold in each pile, making 120 gold in each pile. She then gives a pile of gold to Alexander and Ellaria and sets a pile aside for Arthur for when they party meets up with him again. She then pokes Boomingham. What do you say Lawerence? The money or the axe? Also, does anyone need the potion or remedy? I was waiting for everyone to speak on the axe. But the resounding silence about it suggests the weapon is a dud. Thanks for the reminder about Calaryl's earnings. -

I do not think the Pongcanis are the only threat. Arthur and Throlar both are concerned with the Mopags. As for the leaders of the elves and the resistance, they have had plenty of opportunity to talk. Unless they need their dialogue narrated for them I expect they should have reached some grounds for trust now. Since neither you nor Arthur have said anything about the axe, I will assume you do not want it. Nerwen looks over at Throlar and sighs. Does the boy not understand his actions have caused confusion and delay? -

Sir Shawe places the 104 gold he mugged from the pirate into the pile. I don't need the pirate's gold. With that, Nerwen throws a gold piece of her own in and makes five piles of 106 gold. If one of you wants the axe rather than gold, say so now. Before Nerwen can react, Arthur had formed a dwaf-icle out of the ambassador. Speaking sharply to the young Mage she said. Thoughtless child! Now is not the time to be playing games with magic. Like him or not, he is a member of this party and a hero of Heroica. Much as he might deserve such a punishment for disloyalty to the party, you walk the same road. He ought be with us as we stand against the Mopag and bring peace to this town. It is not your place to deny him that. You will free him now. And if that causes us to miss an opportunity against the Mopag, on your head it is. Turning to the diplomats she said. Yes my Lord Duke, it is over, we have won. Though I strongly recommend you continue to work together and with us against the Mopag hoplites. -

Nerwen listens to her party begin to fracture behind her. Arthur! Demonstrate your point by finishing Indiacca rather than the dwarf. Battle order > Ellaria attacks attacks the Dread Pirate Indiacca Boomingham attacks the the Dread Pirate Indiacca Sir Shawe attacks the Dread Pirate Indiacca using the brutal battle style Nerwen attacks the Dread Pirate Indiacca if Alexander is raised, uses phoenix essence on him if not > Arthur flings ice spell at the Dread Pirate Indiacca if Ellaria has summoned roots of life, else Phoenix essence on Ahvialyn > Alexander attacks the Dread Pirate Indiacca if resurrected by Ellaria > Ahvialyn attacks swordspog C if resurrected > Lady Calaryl casts a Darkness spell at the swordspog C Duke Bârbêthân thinks if the ambassador is not going to smoke, hell, and pulls out a cigar Throlar tries to decapitate the dread pirate Indiacca using a blunt weapon. -

I expect we cannot but you, master Minotaur will die. I salute your bullheaded refusal to face that. Ellaria, I know you god has power to revive Alexander and Ahvialyn, but it would be a shame for Alexander to miss Indiacca's end. If your prayers are not answered, I will use a phoenix essence on him. -

Sandy, I know English is your second language, and you speak/write it much better than I do Finnish, but since I'd correct a native English (or even american english speaker) I'll say this anyway. Wail= to cry or weep, Whale= big marine mammal, Wale= to hit something hard. Easy mistake, but I read Ellaria as breaking down crying, and Nerwen was about to comfort her when I realised that would only cause confusion. My Lord Duke. Perhaps next time Throlar defends us with his shield you could lend a hand? Now, Dread pirate, you are bleeding and blinded. We could simply walk away and leave you to die alone. Not even having the satisfaction of striking another blow in battle. Should we do that? What is your honour worth? -

Nerwen shook her head to clear the dizziness of the blood ritual. So, pirate. Before you go down, should we have heard of your exploits? Have you done anything of note? Sorry doc! My mistake. Should be good to go then. -

Because they wear the form of a creature. Hence wear-creature.
