Heroica RPG - Quest #127: A Light in the Darkness
Chromeknight replied to Zepher's topic in The Heroica Archive
If all the gods are but masks of the one god, then what distinction is left? You cannot say it is better to worship Ennoc than Azazot, since either is but different roads to the same end. But we are going in circles. I posited that light was sometimes good and sometimes bad for men. You responded by first saying that light was always good, and now by saying that light, in and of itself, is neither good nor bad, but only men's use makes it so, which is essentially my point, that you objected to, restated.- 607 replies

Heroica RPG - Quest #127: A Light in the Darkness
Chromeknight replied to Zepher's topic in The Heroica Archive
Nerwen grins, girlish, yet slightly wolfen, as if she had just spotted a tasty morsel of a rabbit. My dear Monk, you have just agreed with me whilst trying to argue against. For if there are gods of light, if there is more than one God who lights then there are different lights, and if not every god is good to men, so not every light is good. Even if you disagree with me and cling to the illusion of one God, either by denying the manifest power of the others or by positing them as puppets and masks of a deeper reality, yet you grant there are differing measures of lights, different lights. And if there are different lights, the onus is on you to show that all lights are good, a fact plainly refuted by experience. Consider the deserts of Dastan. The noon sunlight there can kill, the natives there do not go out in it except swathed and protected from it. Is the naked sunlight unambiguously good? Consider the light thrown by the flames of a burning city, it's inhabitants piled in mounds or huddled in smoldering shells of houses. Is the firelight of destruction unambiguously good? Consider the glow on the tips of masts high in the northern seas before an approaching storm. Are such spirit lights not an omen of thunderstorms and violent weather, or do you say that Saint's fire* is unambiguously good? What say you? How do you reason otherwise? *We'd call it St Elmo's fire but I haven't heard of a St Elmo** on Olegia yet **No, not that .- 607 replies

A city guard and a cleric but also a necromancer and a member of the cold circles. Not all light is good and not all darkness is bad, but trying to gain favour with the Queen of Air and Darkness is not wise. Some powers are careless of the lives of their servanst, which encourages only a cold selfishness..- 607 replies

Nerwen returns the smile There are few who can say they have seen a red assassin in action and lived to tell the tale. Foutunately my friends this time are just as strong as last time. But then I have nothing to fear from you do I, Avery? As it is I owe you an apology, we oughtn't've protected Thistlethorp. If you can be restored to life without being enslaved again to the red death, if I can help that come to pass I will.- 607 replies

Nerwen sighs. Her usual sunny smile replaced by something sterner, more like the expression that characterised her as a Paladin. If you and Marcellus have agreed on this, there is nothing more that needs to be said. It is nice that you're up front about it being a requirement of the task you have retained us to complete. You ask if we are loyal, but loyalty is not measured in words but in actions. Let us go and do. Fretting about anything else is merely wasting time. No one here is considering leaving just because you have added extra goals to our jaunt. Equally you are not going to throw your hands in the air and try to source yet more heroes simply because you must have a precise set of words spoken, documents sealed in blood, amulets of coercion hung around our necks and whatever other tomfoolery you might dream of. Trust is gained and earnt by working together, sharing goals and facing common enemies. Loyalty is fruit of trust. Sowing the ground with doubts and questions as preparation is hardly an auspicious start. You showed trust in us by engaging us from heroica, act on that trust you have already decided to give.- 607 replies

In other words, this class can't solo some enemies. Which is only a fault if one thinks any class should be able to solo every enemy... -

Nerwen speaks gently and diplomatically to Marcellus. Your concern is that you give before you get. You give the information before you get your mistress. This makes you uncomfortable and you seek assurance. But you are asking either the wrong people or in the wrong way. We are currently retained by Yu-Shu. You can ask her to swear and then she can instruct us that saving Morta is a condition of fulfilling our contract with her. Or you can retain us separately to Yu-Shu, offering something to retain our services for the specific task of saving Morta. This means you will get Morta back before you give us any agreed upon reward. Which will it be Master Gremlin?- 607 replies

As you pointed out at the end of #102, Nerwen doesn't regret that decision, but it really has shaped her. Especially since the decision was constrained by not having read the other quests and, at the time, thinking Raguel bore some responsibility for Speros' son and Imaestym. Making decisions based on incomplete/insufficient information is a personal bugbear (and something hammered hard in #102 too!) Reading back over it was interesting, and bound up with my (player) memory of negotitating a very complex battle and loot distribution followed by a discussion involving a dozen player characters and nearly that many NPCs. It still retains it's power and I'm looking forward to going back to hear what's happened with David and Speros (even if I don't see them).

Heroica RPG - Quest #127: A Light in the Darkness

Nerwen smiles warmly, without any observable trace of guilt or regret. You know me. Good. And I am beginning to know you. You speak of Samuel, known as the doubly blessed. It is sad that he left your path to follow another, but his betrayal of your secrets is shameful. He earns no loyalty for me, my debt to him on Raguel's account is discharged. As for your plan, I see its scope. We are raiding one of their lairs to send a message rather than trying to neutralize the entire operation. Good. I am glad to be clear on expectations. You find no shirkers here.- 607 replies

Answering the hermit's question, Nerwen says in a quiet voice. I walked the path of Paladin for a little while. We have discussed the gods you and I, I never denied Ennoc's existence or power. So serving him for a time is no contradiction. Nerwen nods in greeting. Light shines on our meeting. I am Nerwen Calmcacil, these are Monk Pretzel, Grimwald Gjinko and Kiray Nastayo. From what little I have heard so far, the order is a weed in your garden that must be pulled up. But weeding is a thankless task that often, in the act of doing, sows the seeds for yet more seeds to sprout later. Tell me you have a plan that is not haste and hope and misdirected zeal.- 607 replies

Light shines in our meeting Your Reverence, Master Monk here has summed our task. Though we are expecting one other, perhaps we might pray while we wait? Nerwen lends Grimwald a garnet, sapphire, emerald, ruby and aquamarine. It will be good to quest with you Master Gnome. And now you have a full compliment of elemental gems. She then sets aside the Smith's Katana for Kiray to use. Likely this will be better than the one she carries. Master Monk, perhaps you might lend our knight the armour we took from Barus and attach the other end of that fancy chain you have to her also.- 607 replies

Nerwen buys 2 neutralisers, 4 smelling salts and a phoenix essence costing 250 gold leaving her with 99 gold.
-
Nerwen crosses her name off the list for Fields of Glory.
-
Hey Zeph, are you sure there's four paladins(or ex-P) about? From the front page of the hall I count Alexandre, Boomingham, Pretzel and Nerwen. And I don't think Boomingham's gonna sign up...
-
Nerwen leans over to Hoke and says quietly, I may have to postpone the trip to the fields, the quest that has just been posted is an opportunity. Nerwen signs up for #127
-
Yep, Nerwen was a shaman for a while. I enjoyed it. I chose it for roleplay reasons though, Druid was too cliché, Witch and Sage were out so that left Paladin and Shaman. Coming from Cleric, it depends on what you want to add to your role. Cleric is a support class, if you want to do that and revive -Druid. If you want to hit things more -Shaman, if you want to tank through battles -Paladin, if you want to have fun with poison -Witch and if you won the Grogmas event and have six or more gems burning a hole in your pocket -Sage.

Clarification request for Party maracas (WP:4 user is hastened) Is a minstrel hastened only if they attack with the maracas or does using it for a minstrel song also count?
-
Nerwen hands over the 80 gold agreed upon.
-
They look like they wouldn't hit too hard, but they do do a quick beat. Maybe 80 gold?
-
Nerwen takes the offered instruments and gives them an experiemental shake. The beat is fast and playful. Yes! These are great! How much do you want for them?
-
Yep, Minstrel is a good job. Much more in tune with my nature than being a Paladin! I've been keeping busy since the High Kingdoms, went back there recently among the low kingdoms too. As for pipes I'll play any instrument, I'm always on the look out for more, especially if they have some interesting properties.
-
Seeing the dragon climb onto Hoke's lap, Nerwen starts in surprise. She draws the Sylvania's Cowl from her satchel and through it says <I do beseech thee pardon. I didst not see thee whilst I quested with thy master, though, no doubt, you keep thyself nearby.> Tesni, Stars shine and stuff! Been keeping well? It'd be great to have you along on a fields trip.

Staff are here to moderate content and to make sure some standards of language and expression are upheld. Looks like their messing with you is entirely within their job description.

If one of the staff is messing with you, it may be for a reason...
