  1. I am all for supporting independent retailers, I have two shops near me. One has a high mark up for Lego, the other sells at Shop @ Home prices (very occasionally 25-50p more), I tend to buy from that one more (she also has a better selection). Looking at your site I can only find two sets, both of which have a high mark up. I think some of the pictures you have on the site could have better lighting, as some look a bit dull to me. If you are asking what stock would appeal to AFOL, then I would suggest Kingdoms, as I hardly ever see it in chain toy stores (I bought most of mine from Lego). Castle sold really well in the shop near me, although I was told it was difficult to get more when they needed it. If you are asking how to get more involvement from AFOL near you then perhaps see if their is a LUG nearby, and see if you could put on events that would involve them? You might be in a difficult location though as I think Brighton has a Lego Shop, which might effect you. The framed minfigures are a nice idea, but for me would be to expensive, I think most AFOL if they wanted one could DIY it much cheaper.
  2. Welcome to the real world. You pays your money and you takes your choice.
  3. I am more interested in parts than sets now, but I did think Medieval Market Village was the best set I have bought. Building it was actually enthralling, the end product did look gorgeous, but best of all gave me loads of useful pieces. If I was to count the sets I had as a kid I would go for 6696 Backhoe from 1984, just because I had so much play time with it as a built set.

  6. Some good advice in this thread, presumably the plate was deformed because the water was too hot?
  7. Both of the structures are very well built, with great textures , and I really like the shaping of the river with it's curve. But the flatness of most of the landscape detracts, I totally agree filling it with foliage would not work, but 1 plate changes in level would have made it more interesting and kept up the concept of a bleak desert environment (this would also help the river, as you have had to build the banks up to create it, having more landscape texture would allow the river to be cut into it with a subtle valley).
  8. Timber Framed Medieval Shipping Container - perfect for voyages of exploration!
  9. I really like this, the idea that normal sea creatures get mutated into the Atlantis sea monster characters is great . Both of the machines are well built, but for me the landscaping makes this work. I totally agree with Kieldaman, you have good changes in level which gives to me that 'ebb and flow' feeling of the sea. Some underwater MOC just don't look like they are underwater, but with the subtle level changes and the seaweed you have definitely pulled it off.
  10. Are you for real? Techniques do not belong to people. If you are that upset that a technique which you consider 'belongs to you' might be used by other people, I suggest in the future you keep your Lego to yourself. Best not splash it all over the web again! As for referencing, or 'giving credit'... We are building with Lego not writing an academic article, lets not take ourselves to seriously now! Nice ship by the way pif500. I don't know that much about pirate ships, but this definitely is looking like it could float and sail well!
  11. I think this is more related to the way the skeleton is a biker, than the particular look of the helmet. So that the association with Nazi symbolism is more triggered by the chopper bike, and potential associations with Hells Angels who use the helmet (which is not always related to the signaling of an affinity with a fascist ideology). Perhaps if the skeleton had the helmet, and no bike, less people would interpret the symbolism in the way that many have done, which is not just in this forum.
  12. This is an excellent first MOC to post, lots of great details and a clean build. You have created some great minifig characters, and they really bring it into life . I like the way you have thought out the defense with the twin gates, and the balcony which serves as a large 'murder hole'. The steampunk 'boat on wheels' leaving is a bit too much for me, but maybe I don't have enough imagination! As for the photography, I think it shows the MOC perfectly. The only thing you could have done is hidden the background with card or paper.
  13. I totally agree with fred67, the search is very hit and miss. But what really annoys me about it is the 'Flood Control', please wait 20 seconds. I can understand the site doesn't need constant random searches, but only members can search anyway, so why does 'Flood Control' need to apply to everyone? Of course I could understand it if it just applied to members with less than 10 posts, but once someone has 10 posts I think they can be trusted not to 'abuse' the search system.
  14. I am really liking this, you have a great concept here, and the build totally works. The burnt out tree looks perfect, and is nicely connected. The guy slipping on the stepping stones across the river is perfectly posed, brings life into the scene . I'm not sure why the river has white and black in it? Not that it really matters, perhaps leaving a question to be answered adds to the MOC, maybe you had a good reason? I wish the 'Death' figure had black hands instead of dark bley, but that is not really that important really.
  15. When you say you have a 'few' for sale, how many do you have? I am seriously interested in obtaining some of these.
  16. This is a great idea, simple but totally functional. Just the type of thread which should be getting indexed in Advanced Building Techniques
  17. I asked the same question here, when I placed my first Pick a Brick order! Anyway, your suspicions are correct - Dark Stone Grey = Dark Bluish Grey, and Medium = Light Bluish Grey.
  18. I have seen a few of the modules you have built for your station on here, and they are all looking very nice. You are building in a nice and clean style, with the right amount of details for a functional building , using the Apple Tree House set gives a nice colour scheme the Dark Blue and White look excellent together. It is good to see you starting an interior on this, I presume eventually you will do interiors for the whole station? One thing I do not look like on any of the modules you have posted is the way the roof does not overhang. I know that a whole stud overhang can look a bit too much, although I personally prefer that over no overhang at all. A half stud overhang can look very nice, although it does require a bit of planning, especially in two directions.
  19. Thanks for the positive comments from you all. This was definitely a fun build, with quite a few problems that needed to be solved to get it how I wanted it. Once this idea was planted in my head, I knew I had to build this obscure Roman cult temple even though it needed to be underground! I tried a version with a cutaway side, but it kind of ruined the effect of the roof (which was my favourite part in building). Cheers! I wanted a dark bley statue because I wanted it to stand out from the light bley masonry. The helmet is the AT-ST Pilot Helmet, I have always liked its classical clean lines. Getting all the parts cost a bit in postage though, hands from one shop, arms from another, another order for the head! Also this was the first time I took the arms off a torso, I had never done that as a kid (torsos were to precious!). Cheers! This was difficult to photograph properly. The stairs lead down, turn left and lead down again, to enter the temple. It was impossible to get a good shot of them because they were hidden.
  20. The mystery cult of Mithras flourished within the Roman Empire in the first few centuries of the Common Era, it was particularly popular with soldiers. The basic essence of the temple design is an underground structure with a source of water. I used a degree of artistic licence with this, to be totally accurate the benches should line the walls, and not face the statue. But this is my Lego, and its not historically accurate... An overview: Do you dare to enter the realm of Mithras? The temple module: Inside: Mithras:
  21. Congratulations! Good to see a classic town lover in charge! I don't normally spam these topic up, but I couldn't resist...

  23. The arguments about an innate difference in the biologically determined brain structure, or the socially determined construction of a gender identity might never really be fully solved. I do not really understand the physiological evidence, but I do understand the sociological, and that tends to sway me towards a 'post-modern' position that most of the constants that 'white middle class western civilization' holds dear are no more than an illusion. I personally think in the last thirty years that children have become increasingly targeted by advertisers, and of course they will use the best methods available to them to sell product. The gender roles that children have learned by the age of 8 may well but boys off from playing with Lego if it might also be associated with girls? I don't know, but I have a strong assumption that the Lego R&D office have conducted extensive research... Perhaps this image tells more about the period it was released, than it does about Lego. Maybe the advertising agency had a social agenda, maybe they were buying into the latest 'hot topic'? Perhaps then Lego was just 'Bricks', and not 'Themes', so it could be marketed as gender 'neutral'?
  24. The individual pieces will fit quite nicely into my sorted collection! I will buy a few smaller sets, but I will get the majority (and we have some beautiful ones) of the nice pieces from BrickLink. As for the minifig bits (which I generally quite like), I will buy separately. But as most have flesh on the torso, I personally can not mix them with the superior classics, so they will be part of a separate world (PoP and Star Wars pieces I have bought).
  25. I really like this, both for the well executed techniques (which are flawless), but also for the whole concept I am reading in this (Light against Dark) excellent work. The SNOT masonry looks gorgeous but, and this is not a criticism, I would have liked to see it for the whole wall (and not just the parapet). It is because seeing the 'goodness' of the top, I would like to see it for the lower portion. But all in all, this is just an excellent concept, which has been built nicely . This is a really good observation, and so true. Thanks for bringing it up, I always feel the need to add that flame piece! But thinking about it, none of my MOC are supposed to be set in the night! Definitely given me something to think about in the future! Given the context (as this is pure fantasy), I don't think it matters at all!
