Just remain calm. Come on, you don't think Lego would really do a LOTR theme do you? Seems like some people will believe anything these days

That map is really stunning Viceroy! Excellent job and a great idea on creating a guide for Mitgardia

A Guide to building a Medieval Village
Derfel Cadarn replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I used to, I had all my CCC entries still assembled for most of the year, but I dismantled every moc I had in september as I wanted to start planning out my future Camelot build, so I needed to work out what parts I had and what I will need. It was annoying as the following month I decided to do The Great Western Lego Show and I was kicking my self because I could have displayed them there. I only ever posted 3 pictures of each of those entries as that was the rules, but I did actually take lots of photos, so I have lots of references for the Olde Forge. These days, I usually take apart what I build after photographing it. I got fed up with trying to find space for the mocs and trying to stop them getting covered with dust. When the village is done, I will take the houses off and probably have them sitting around on my table for a while, but the landscape will be taken apart straight away. At this current time, the only mocs that are assembled are my two Galleons which are in tall plastic boxes to keep the dust out. DC -

Guildsmen! It is good to see you planning out areas of land for yourself and giving them interesting names. I just want to make one point clear. The idea of having your own areas, was so that our land would have many different towns, villages and settlements. So when we viewed the map, it would look more realistic with all the different names and places throughout. I hoped we would see lots places built up each with their own farms, watchtowers, shops etc and whatever else you think up and want to build. However, I have seen a few little problems arise due to peoples claims of land, people complaining that their land is being taken by another etc. Nothing major, but I want to make it clear that you don't need huges plots of land on the map. After all, this is lego. Just cause you have what looks like a small section of land, it doesn't stop you from building anything different then what you would if you had a big plot. No one is going to be able to build a settlement/town the size of our capital on their own(unless you have a huge collection and plenty of time). For example, I could pick one of the small islands in the Mystic Isles, but I could still build 4 blacksmiths, loads of houses, windmills, shops, a fort etc, if i wanted. Because everyone's area will only be marked on the map by the Name of the area. We won't be marking the names of every single building, just the name you have chosen. So in theory, you can build as many mocs as you want for your area of land. Don't think you need to claim a big area just because you want to build a lot of stuff. There are a lot of members here who are yet to pick and name an area of land, so we need to think of others. I do like the competitive nature you guys have though, I like the fact that you want to build powerful mighty settlements and take land, but not from your fellow guildsmen. We must build our land into something mighty and powerful, make the other guilds envious of our great land and buildings. If this fragile peace breaks between the guilds, then war will be upon us, a chance for the adventurous among you to capture a bit of enemy land and rename it yourself Another point I would like to make, you may have noticed some smaller forests and some lakes and rivers thoughout the map. Well, apart from the rivers that have been named, any river or forest that runs through or is nearest your area of land can be named by you. For example, there is a forest that lies near de Gothia's land of Benoic, so that would be Benoic forest. Of course, you don't have to name it after your land, it could be named after a legend that surrounds it or a famous dragon that died there etc, what ever you want. Remember, you have a lot of time to build parts for your own area of land, its not a main challenge, and mocs can be built whenever you want. As you should have seen, our Capital Albion has finally been drawn up and planned out, and a great job has been done of it thanks to ZCerberus! This is our mighty Capital City, the one place which we should really try hard on and make it stand out. We are in a great posistion as we have been racing ahead of other guilds with our builds, so lets keep it up and build our capital. I am currently snapping up lots of good prizes, some of which will be mingled in with the building of our capital. It has been hard work sorting out the guild idea and getting everything up and running. Hopefully by Xmas we will have the proper point system in place and be able to start showing prizes. Im sure you all know a certain new exclusive Kingdoms set is released in January right?! Guilds are keeping to themselves at the moment because of the peace treaty, but im sure it won't be long until another guild breaks it. When that happens, I fear things could get hectic, but we will be ready! Keep up the great work everyone, and remember to sign up for the Capital build in its own thread in the forum. I will set a link to that thread in the first post of this thread as well. -

Your area of land is rather large! Actually, being a wizard, I would have thought you would like to own our own island in the mystic isles. It can be as big as you want then, as no one really knows what lies deep inside that place. I do agree about closing the entry to Avalonia soon, it's something we have been discussing, as we have got more members than the other guilds. I will be making updates tonight and will answer everyone questions. I havnt forgot about you new members either, so do not fear, you shall be welcomed and allotted land. Our capital plans are ready to post, so I hope everyone gets building on them as our capital will be our prize possession and a example of why we are Mighty Avalonia! -
A Guide to building a Medieval Village
Derfel Cadarn replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Glad to hear the guide is helpful and giving people inspiration. Well, I will finish this village soon, just a few more buildings to do. However, I have also decided to still update it with other useful things. Some buildings really need a lot of explaining, so every noun and then, I will add a instruction for a large building. So when this village is finished, I will do a step by step instruction to build 'Ye Olde Forge' which was a moc I posted last year. Then I will add new helpful tips and techniques whenever I find them. So basically, this will serve a overall medieval guide. I realized I will not be able to fit in a lot of the stuff I wanted to on the village, as I havn't made it big enough. So churches, windmills and everything else will be covered separately after. That way I can go into more detail on them. I will also look at storage and useful part selections for medieval builds. If there's anything in particular anyone would like to know/see, just let me know. As for the 8x8 plates, I started buying them a good year ago now, and they were pretty cheap as no one was really after them. They give an interesting effect, as you can add many different colors underneath to get different effects. I am also messing around with putting lights underneath them to create a mystic glowing stream. They are expensive now, so if you can get them cheaper anywhere then go for it. Thanks for your great comments everyone! DC -
Trust you to do something crazy and different. Great idea and well layed out with the tower in the center. You have kept up a great amount of detail all through this moc, very impressive and a great asset to the Nocturnia guild. Looks like you would really get lost in there! Awesome as always mate

Greetings I have started to add the list of places in the first post of the thread. I think the easiest way to work things out is if each member owns the area of land that surrounds the tower they built. The majority of you who have made a tower, have already been placed on the first version of the map. However, there are a lot of new comers who have built towers but have not yet been added to the map. At the moment I have listed the map number of your tower next to the name of your area. e.g Benoic No.17. Eventually, when everyone has named their areas, I can get rid of the numbers, as hopefully a new map will be made with all the proper names instead of numbers. So everyone who has not yet named their area, can you do so please. If your tower does not feature on the current map, don't worry. Just tell me the name of your area and where you would like it to be located. I can then add this to the list, so when its all done, a new map can be made with the updated names. I will also be updating the links to your mocs and add the task mocs where I can. Remember, the 15th of December is fast approaching, so if you havn't built a tower yet, there is not long left! For those who really can't get one built in time, I will ask that you build one eventually anyway, as this will be used to make your personal area in Avalonia. Keep up the great work Guildsmen! I will change it to Lord if you prefer. -

Greetings! I will start added your land and locations in a list on the first page. Your new titles will be added to, I will set them as Lords, but if anyone would rather be an Earl then just let me know and I will change it. Thats fine, Avalonia welcomes you, great to have you with us! Ok, I will add Hybrasil to the list. Where is its location? Antyria will be listed, where is it located? I just need the location of Fuchal? Glevum it is, location? Granted Sir Looking good! It has a nice interesting design and I like the Avalonia logo, nice work! Im not sure if anyones built one yet. Panik is yours! Excellent work, another deadly weapon for our army. Look forward to seeing your tower. Do you have a name of your stretch of land you want? Pick a spot on the map, give it a name and become lord of that area. You can then name your tower after your area of land. Earl Of Burrium! Well, the 'Flight Of Dragons' get their name from the sound their horses hooves make, which sound like the beating of a dragons wings. If there wern't dragons then how would the people know what the sound of dragons wings sound like? Yes there are dragons, and if dragons exist, then there must surely be many other fabulous creatures that dwell thoughout all Historia. So yes! Our symbol is the mighty Dragon Of Avalonia. So are you saying that your legion protects the gates to the Mystic Isles? This is fine, however I don't think you will be able to own all of the Mystic Isles as your land, as many others also inhabit this area, its a big place. However, if your legion has taken up the brave task of being the gatekeepers of the Mystic Isle's main road, that is indeed a brave honour. Very good work de Gothia, love the really lush green feel this has and like the idea behind it. I believe you have now completed the six tasks, the first to do so. They have all been good interesting builds. To get in the feasting hall however, you will need to earn the seventh, but there is lots of time for that and many builds to prove yourself worthy. Keep up your great work, you do your guild very proud! I think he ment that he protects and guards the gates that lead in and out of the Mystic Isles, which would mean he owns the land around each gate. So not to worry, the Mystic Isles is a large labarinth of Islands and the unknown, so there is plenty of land available in the area. Brickdocter owns one of the Islands, and the sacred Tower of Ynys Wydryn is located there also. Your land is granted, Basilita it is. -

Good to see people naming their stretches of land. Could you also list a rough location of where it is in Avalonia, just to make it easier for our map maker. I will add the town/settlements to the front page. -

Greetings fellow guildsmen! Due to the concern of a never ending debate on our Capital's name, it has been decided that the name for our capital shall be Albion. However, Avalonia is a mighty land, and even though our capital Albion is the hub and mightiest city, it is not the only settlement. While looking at the map I realized that there should be many smaller cities and settlements with their own name. Every member here is of course entitled to there own stretch of land in Avalonia, so if you wish, you can look at the map and find a posistion you like, give that area whatever name you wish, build it up into a village, town or city and you will then be the Lord of that area. This way, it will make our map more interesting as Avalonia will look more like a real land with many different villages, towns and settlements. For example, de gothia's stretch of land is called Benoic and so his lookout tower is called the Tower Of Benoic, Benoic farm etc, and therefore de Gothia gets the title 'Lord Of Benoic'. This may help you to properly name your mocs better rather then just calling them 'Avalonian Tower' or 'Avalonian Farm'. You can then actually name them after your particular settlement/area you are lord of. I hope this makes sense. Also, if you create a town or province that you name and build, that does not mean you can't build anywhere else, you can still build mocs all over Avalonia if you wish. Its completely up to you, I thought this might be a good way to get some towns and settlements built up all around Avalonia. Remember you don't have to build a city, just your own settlement that has its own name that we can put on the map. It will help everyone to get a better understanding if all the different places in our great land. Some settlements might have a particular shop not found anywhere else in Avalonia and so it could be built up around whatever that speciality is. The possibilities are endless and its all down to you to make it how you wish. Remember to give your settlement/area a name, as I will need to record all the areas so our map makers can work them into the map. I have a list of names which are very old and are the original celtic and roman names that where used in Britain in the dark ages. Most people would not have heard them, and they sound quite interesting. Benoic isn't in that list, but I used it as it sounds good and thought it would suit you. Here's a list of some old forgotton Celtic and Roman names for settlements, towns, villages and forts. Members might find some useful and use them. Aqua Sulis - Roman name suited for an area near water. Broceliande - pronounced Brocker-li-anday Burrium Calleva Corinium Cornovia Demetia Dolforwyn Dumnonia Dunum Durnovaria Glevum Gwent Gwynedd Halcwm Isca Kernow Lindinis Lleyn Lugg Vale Magnis Nidum Pontes Powys - pronounced pow-ess Ratae Siluria Venta Vindocladia Islands: Island names always started with Ynys which means isle and is pronounced In-ess Ynys Trebes - pronounced Tree-bay Ynys Seren - Seren means 'the star', so this means isle of stars. Ynys Wydryn - means isle of glass Forts: fort names started with Caer which is pronounced Care Caer Ambra Caer Lavaine Caer Dinas Caer Sws Caer Cavan Caer Cadarn - Cadarn means'the mighty'and yes its part of where I got my name from:classic: These are all very old names of places from dark age Britain, quite interesting and hardly heard of, so If they are of use to anyone then feel free to use them. You will notice some of the roman influence in a few of the names. -

Of course, if you like it, then your area of land can be called Benoic. That's quite a good idea, as I think members should have their own areas that they can build up if they want to. You allready have a tower and farm, so you could also add a stronghold there e.g Benoic Castle, and that way Benoic can go on the map as a city/village that you are lord of. Welcome and great work on your tower, another excellent addition to mighty Avalonia. Post your sigfig and some of his warriors, then pick some land, and bring it to life with your builds! I agree that the map should be on the first page, I will get round to that as soon as possible. That's a good idea, I think naming will be an endless debate, so we should just go with one. Albion sounds good and its meaning makes sense. -
Excellent tower It stands out well with the half-timbered part at the top, nicely done. The landscape is really good, you have done well to create such a interesting landscape on a small base. Great job, your tower will be added to the map!

Greetings Guildsmen! Excellent work all of you. Avalonia has really been on a roll recently, we are powering on, and a mighty land is unfolding thanks to all your excellent creations. I have updated the first post and added a list of all the buildings that have been made in each area of Avalonia. They are also links to the moc, so you don't have to search through the forum to find a specific moc, its all on the first post. This is to also help our Cartographers, so they can see all the buildings and know what region of Avalonia they are in. I have only added buildings and landmark structures as a lot of the title tasks I set have been built as scenes, which means they won't be featured as a landmark on the map. Tasks that have been built as full structures like farms, temples etc, are on the list, as they can be added to the map. However, I will eventually post a list of all the task builds so they can be found easier. A lot of the mocs posted didn't have a name and were just called 'Avalonian tower' or 'watchtower of Avalonia', so I have given them a name so they stand out on the map better, as I think our map would look better if every building or landmark had a proper name rather then 'Avalonia this' and 'Avalonia that'. If anyone has any names they want to give their buildings/mocs, then let me know, as the names I have given are just there as examples. Keep up the good work, It shouldn't be long now till we can start on the capital Sounds good de gothia while Capn' Beerbeard's name does sound interesting, 'Tyrant' is more suited to nocturnus I think -
Great work! Really liking this, great idea with lots of great detail. The little house suits the scene well and everything blends nicely together. Another great addition to our ever growing land Was that the Thieves Guild quest? Just done that myself. Burning beehives!

Right, the only information Lego store employee's know are rumours. Lego stores have no conformation as yet on weather LOTR is happening or not. There are a few individuals here who know the answer of weather its true or not and certain members of Lugs know the truth as well, but out of respect to TLC everyone is sworn to secrecy as Lego try's hard to keep things under wraps. There are a few individuals who like to abuse this and blab, but these individuals are known to us and could find themselves in trouble. It has to be said that any pictures with a 'confidential image' stamp over it should not be posted here and will be taken down immediatly. As for LOTR, you will all just have to wait and see, as im afraid no conformation will be given until Lego decides to release and show information on what they have in store for the castle theme. It could be anything. Patience people!

The way I see it is this, Lego has the license, but for how long I don't know. The sets were released to coincide with the latest movie, then the black Pearl was released to coincide with the DVD release of the movie. So now the hype has died down. It wouldn't surprise me if Lego wait to see if a next movie happens, then release some more sets to coincide with that. So POTC may well be dead for a while, but could resurface again with a release of a new movie, if they still keep the licence. Harry Potter theme came back again, so there's no reason why POTC won't come back a few years down the line either. In the mean time, Lego could well do another classic pirate line to fill the gap in between. We shall see

Simply Beautiful! I've been looking forward to seeing what you would bring to Avalonia, as I knew it would be stunning and mythical. You don't disappoint do you! So much to like here, I was hoping to see some more mythical looking mocs as its such a big part of Avalonia. The water looks powerful yet magical and the Nymph is beautiful(are they fiber optic pieces?) Lovely landscape full of great details and the whole moc just has a great charming feel to it. I think you could do a good scene with the may Pole with ribbons and people dancing around it. I am hoping to see more mocs of this feel from Avalonia, as the Mystic Isles and Enchanted forest are both areas based in myth and fantasy. Great work, very original

Are you sure you don't mean 'High King Of The Elves' task. Seems to have more in common with that then the 'Prince Of the Forest' task. I loved your map, and wondered if it we be too much of a problem if you update it every month or 2. I am planning on writing a list on the first page listing all the buildings and their location which will hopefully make your life easier when adding them to the map. Do what ever you find easiest for you, I will leave it up to you. Keep up the great work! I agree, they look great and I must also start adding sigfigs into some mocs. I will hopefully add some in the completed village. -
This is something I suffer the same problem with. Photos have never been my strong point, while Im ok at getting some good angled shots, I always suffer from picture quality. I used to think my pics were ok, but its not until you see photos like Brickdocter's tower that make you realise how much nicer his looks. Again, its a combination of the same things for me to. Here in the UK its winter, so it is also dark when I go to work and dark when I get back, so that leaves me with the weekend. Now we hardly get any sun in summer over here, let alone winter, so nice bright natural light is hard to come by. I usually photo my mocs in the room that has the biggest window and it also has white walls which help. But I still would like to look into maybe getting some special lighting that allows me to take good photos no matter what time of day it is. Unfortuantly whenever I think about getting these, I always end up spending the money on more lego So it would be nice to hear some pointers on how to take nicer pictures. In another thread of course, don't want to fill up this great moc with debates on photos.

Great work everybody! Im very impressed with commitment and builds coming from you all. You do the guild very proud indeed. We really have got off to a great start in creating our land. Its really great to see members coming up with their own ideas of what the land needs and getting on and building it. I think we can fairly say we are ahead of the other guilds in terms of building our land and it seems we are setting the trend. A great effort from all members and I hope it continues Looking at all the builds we have, I think it would help if I added a list in the first post of every build and its location, then update it as new builds come through. This will then help out our Cartographers when it comes to updating the map, plus it will allow us to see how our land is progressing and what buildings we have. Keep up the great work everybody! -
A stunning country farm Z! The building looks wonderful, a nice size with a great color scheme that works very well and the details are perfect. The barn, fences and trees overhanging the path are all excellently done alongside the house. A perfect farm for Avalonia, great work
