Well, the next LEGO video game is POTC
David Thomsen replied to highflyingbean's topic in LEGO Pirates
I hope they make the game more challenging for adults than previous Lego games have been... I enjoyed them, but I also playing games more complicated than 'look for something with an aura and pick it up/use it'. Maybe if the game had different levels of difficulty, for those who just want a basic platform romp to those who want to be cerebrally stimulated. The elements have always been there, just their application is a bit limited. -
New Zealand: "Where to find Lego"
David Thomsen replied to Legoman's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
I'm waiting until I can afford the Public Transportation next week... It's probably going to be the last set I get for a while. I found a couple of Hero Factory sets in the Kilbirnie Farmers in Wellington. (Xplode, Corroder and Meltdown - no good guys yet) It's not my scene, but someone may be waiting for them. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion
David Thomsen replied to Klaus-Dieter's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I was sitting here hoping the 16th one would be a pirate, but thinking it couldn't possibly be because pirates are awesome and K-D couldn't possibly have forgotten a pirate, even if it was the last figure. Yay! Finally a minifig I can actually use in my collection. -
Say you lost your entire Lego collection in an earthquake accident and had to collect it all over again, but you were insured up to the exact value of the collection you lost and were able to re-purchase all the sets you had at the price you originally bought them for... Or you could keep all of the money, or only buy some of the sets and keep the rest of the money... what would you do? As much as my collection has been a pleasure to me, sometimes I feel it is just as much a burden. It takes up so much space, most sets I have only constructed once, I would be very expensive to move anywhere, I don't even have time to organise it properly. I definitely think I would have done things differently if I had known when I came out of my 'dark ages' that I could end up at this point. I would have probably only purchased the modular building range, and one other range, like the Pirates. What about you?

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion
David Thomsen replied to Klaus-Dieter's topic in Special LEGO Themes
A lot of people seem to have predetermined that certain figures are male. The snowboarder, doctor, fisher and elf could all be female. So could the ferrari driver and the baseball player, but that's less likely. The mysterious 16th figure could be female as well. Things like the mummy, the gorilla and the alien are all more or less gender neutral, so they don't count. I know there's (unfortunately) always going to be more male than female minifigs, but I'm not assuming there are only two females in series three until I've seen more details. -

I'm also kind of disappointed in this theme... I like the idea of creating 'sets' of minifigs (the alien goes well with the spaceman, for example) but a lot of these seem like repeats with minor differences (do we really need another singer? Wouldn't a guitar player have been a better idea?). I'll have to wait and see what they actually look like, of course, but TLC needs to be constantly creative with this theme, and not just use the same minifig trophy/maracas/microphone as the previous wave. -

I find this interesting, since it's exclusive to Toyworld. Why would they discount an exclusive? Maybe they just don't see that much interest in a $200 box with a tram and a bus and a couple of tram/bus shelters... -

No... I'm hoping there might be more at 'BrickFair' this weekend, but I don't know whether it's purely a fan-based event, of if the Lego company has a presence. -

It's back here... "I saw a brief glimse of some art work for the Jan sets a few weeks ago and all I can say is that they rock." I don't think achris had time to snap any pictures, nor would he probably have been allowed to. -

I think there's only a 0.1% chance of this theme not happening. There's a new POTC film out next year, it's a Disney film, Lego are licensing a lot of Disney sets, the Jack Sparrow figure was in an official Lego display, the headpiece looks like the same material as other preliminary pieces we have seen, someone on this forum has said that they've seen pictures of the first wave of sets, and that there's going to be a wave in January and a wave later in the year. It's not absolutely conclusive by scientific standards, but as rumours go, it's pretty well grounded. -

Oooh! I didn't expect it so soon because it isn't even on S@H NZ yet. I'll be picking up mine tomorrow. Thanks for the info. -
...wow. I was looking at the first picture thinking, 'it's nice, but these pages are inundated with nice MOC sailing ship. What sets this ship apart from the rest?' And then I scroll down... This ship is something else indeed. I thought my Imperial Flagship was modular, but this? This makes Imperial Flagship look like a pop-up book, where this is like an interactive hologram. Three thumbs up. (Because I am a freak who has three thumbs)

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread

We've already had skeletons and fish people, zombies and mermaids aren't that different... As for the carnival on the river... that's not even fantasy. When rivers have frozen over for long periods in the past, entrepreneurs have been quick to set up attractions on the ice to make a profit. The only thing that worries me is 'zombies', because they've been used far too often in movies in recent years. On the other hand... if the film makers do their research properly and look at the origins of the zombie myth, which isn't so far removed from the POTC time, they could potentially do something much more sophisticated than the cliche of 'brain-eating undead monsters'. -

Ah, but Pirates already has a large pre-existing fan base... no such base exists for 'pseudo Persians' or 'war archaeologists' or 'men in blue and red spider suits'. If I had to name one main hope I have for this theme, it's that it has good world-building potential. The only other licensed theme I've collected has been Indiana Jones, and when you build all the sets at once it doesn't really make any sense... there's a temple in Peru next to a temple in Egypt and a canal in Venice. I'd really like to see a distinctive port growing over time. Mansion, fort, pub, blacksmith, harbour... all things that appeared at some point in the films, in fact mostly within the first half hour of the first film. If the sets look like they're going to be based on 'microscenes', like, instead of having a complete fort they just have the jail cell that held Jack, then I'll probably flag the whole theme. World building is one of the main reasons I love Lego. -
Minifg collectors series 2 pics and barcodes
David Thomsen replied to Superkalle's topic in Special LEGO Themes
So... where is series three? We saw both series one and two before the first one came out, and now series two is coming out and we haven't seen series three... I need to give that Mexican a gun. It's unfair that the 'tribal hunter' gets a bow and arrow and the cowboy gets two guns, but all the Mexican gets is a couple of maraccas. -

The other factor is... where would Batman and Indiana Jones and Harry Potter go, if not the Licensed forum? The Action Themes forum? That doesn't quite fit... POTC on the other hand is clearly a Pirate-based theme, so it belongs here as much as it does in the Licensed forum. And of the people who are excited by this range, a large proportion of them have no interest in the film, just the fact that it is Pirates, which seems to imply that the discussion belongs here... BTW thanks 'achris' for the info. January? That's much closer than I expected... are there any more upcoming conventions they might be planning to reveal the new sets at? -

I don't think you should be so completely dismissive of the idea... five years ago I would have thought double-sided torso printing was impossible. And look at the amount of leg printing in the minifigures range, and the stripes on the mime's arm... time moves on, impossible things become possible. I think it's extremely simple to mould a small, discrete hole on the top of hair pieces and wigs, and a peg on the base of hats. I don't know anything about plastic moulding, but if they can do it for hats with plumes, why can't they do it for hair with hats? If everything has a standard shape, then you could easily swap hats between characters as well, adding hugely to the play experience. Jack's hat. Plain black tricorn, worn by most characters. Black tricorn with gold trim, worn by some characters sometimes. Elizabeth's Singapore hat. Davy Jones' hat. Barbossa's hat. Will Turner's hat, which I think he wears at the end of the first film. Kind of a musketeer hat. Darth Vader's and Yoda's pirate hats, in the inevitable SW/POTC cross-over. Lots of hats. If interchangable, lots of customisation possibilities. -

So when Indiana Jones 4 came out, they only made Lego Indiana Jones sets from that film, and nothing from the first three films? And they definitely didn't do anything from the first three Star Wars films... or the first two Toy Story films... There will definitely be a Davy Jones figure, even if he doesn't come out immediately. -

Probably there will be two hairpieces - dreadlocks with hat, and dreadlocks without hat. Unless Lego have devised a way to discretely fit hats on hair, which is plausible... a small hole, like the one for plumes and tiaras, on top of the hair, and a peg on the base of the hat. I didn't think we would see any pictures of this range until October at the earliest. But now I'm conflicted... I want to read about the new range, but I don't want it to spoil the fourth movie for me... which is the most important? Maybe all POTC news should be marked with 'contains potential spoilers' from now on, unless it's obviously from the first three movies. Edit: Oh crap! I just realised Jack won't be able to turn his head at all with that hair. Probably Davy Jones won't either. I think I'll keep the figures from these sets for my collection, but populate the actual sets with old-fashioned pirates with turnable heads. -
There go my hopes for an ultra-large minifig-scale set that isn't Star Wars... It's nice, but I won't be buying it.
-
Has that wide-brimmed hat been in anything else? I have very little interest in Star Wars sets otherwise, but... that hat. Must have it.
-
This is a great idea. The best threads are those that have all the useful information in the very first post, which then gets updated when new information is discovered. I too get sick of wading through pages and pages of 'I can't wait for this to come out' looking for a particular picture or piece of information.

Toyworld has 50% off pirates, at least the one in Wellington does. Not as exciting as 60% off, but at least they have the Bounty. And plenty of them. Maybe your last chance to pick up an extra one for $85...
