"Yes, he's in right now. He just finished assisting our priest in a sermon. I imagine you must have much to talk about with him. As I'm sure you've heard, he's the best source for any information you need on anything, political or economic. he should be in the vault where we hold our services, but he takes business meetings in the alley outside the bank. You can go see him if you'd like. All Mercutio worshipers are welcome, but he does charge for useful information." The banker said pleasantly. "I'm very pleased to hear that demand is growing in Dastan, they are one of our largest purchasers after-all. Oh, this is great news." he finished, smiling. -

"Alex, I suggest you keep that mail. That's the reason you're not going to take damage from Eidilon's doomed gauntlet." Sylph stated, darkly pleased with himself. "No one target the Gauntlet. "Ah, of-course," Stated the banker knowingly, "I hear trade's good in Dastan. I'm afraid the same is not so around here. The fall of the cloth trade devastated the Town. I'm glad to see though that our name still stands for quality though. I sincerely hope your business here goes well, because our City could really use new business partners. Most people don't know, but I hear from Marty's information gatherers that there's going to be a law passed really soon limiting our cloth-trade to a single company. Most people don't think this is a good thing, but personally, I think the security that could provide might allow us to re-solidify our standing in foreign markets for some-time. I suppose it depends on the direction the company takes with the deal though... and how they break it to the public. If public opinion is too negative this deal could fall flat on its face. You're not involved in that, are you? As for the Ennoc crackdowns, it's because the Church is losing its control of the public. Nowadays there are fewer truly devout Ennoc supporters, and they've had their fare-share of scandals. Its gotten so bad that they've hired a pair of rather unsavory underworld agents who don't keep a really low profile. The Church is doing everything in their power to maintain their stronghold over this town, including persecuting us as 'Heathens.' Their abusive ways can't last much longer though. I can't see the people of this fine city standing by the Church in their miss-guided, miss-managed actions." He took the pen and paper from "Bridgette Rosalindt" and handed it nicely to Nessa. -
Thanks, and I agree! I feel guilty for not rewarding Nessa's attempt at subtlety. It would have worked if the NPC in question wasn't the safe-guarder of the Cult of Mercutio. Also, are free-hits accounted for before or after poison/decay? ~Insectoid Aristocrat

The Banker nearly died of relief. He turned to Nessa. "I'm sorry about that, you should have showed me yours." he breathed out, not upset, more apologetic. "The Church of Ennoc has been cracking down on us in this city recently, so I have to be very cautious. Yes, Marty is down in the vault at the end of the hallway down-stairs... but if you want to meet him for reasons aside from worship, he takes that kind of business outside." The banker clergyman wiped his forehead with his hand. "What brings you lot to Brendenton?" The people took their time getting out now, and spoke louder. The Banker took out his list of names. "Would you all like to sign this for us?" -

The man looked around nervously. Some of the people getting out moved faster, some giving the bank keeper worried or threatening looks. "I'm sorry," he said, "but I do not think I know anyone named 'Marty the Face.' If there's anything else I can help you with, I would be pleased to do so." He kept a straight face, but the savvy party members could tell that he was lying. It was also obvious that he wouldn't tell them the truth even if they put a knife at his throat. Perhaps the Party had some way else to convince him they were on his side? -
Hey, 62ers! Sorry for the delay (although I was going to wait for that RP to reach a natural conclusion anyways.) I was in a car-drive home all day, and that also means I'm away from my Photoshop ( ) and my small collection of figs and LoTR sets... But I now have access to my big collection! Hopefully this means better sets and less-repetitive figs for the remainder of the quest, but it also may mean fewer pics in the mean-time, so I hope you can forgive me if my reaction-time is slower this week. We should be seeing a fight soon though, so that may make things up to you. I'm sure you've had it up to here with all the RP and intrigue I've been forcing down your throats. ~Insectoid Aristocrat!

Heroica RPG - Quest #62: Insider Trading

When the contentious comrades concluded their concise altercation, they proceeded to enter the bank, Nessa first, chin parallel with the floor, and the antagonized Party Leader centimeters behind her. the rest of the party not involved in their squabble shuffled in as well, hoping to avoid the rain before it started. When they got into the dark brick building, they found that many people were just exiting a hallway which led to a door and a set of stairs leading down. Some of them were in the act of putting coins in their pockets. One lady had a coin on a necklace that she was returning to beneath her clothes. Several of the people eyed the party suspiciously as they left. The clerk behind his table seemed surprised to see the party enter, but the look vanished quickly. "Hello, would you like to open a bank account here?" He starts, and looks around, shuffles some papers he has, concealing a signed list of people's names, "Or," he begins in a quieter voice, "Are you here for something else?" The people who had been in the subterranean assemblage shuffled out, talking in hushed tones to each other. They eyed the party like dangerous strangers as they collected their things and passed through the doors. -

Picking up the coin, she noticed that it was in-fact, not marked the same as most of her coins. It possessed a very ornate image of a spider in the center of a web. The image was clear, but aside from that it looked (weighed, smelled, tasted, felt, sounded) no different than any other coin she'd acquired. Drake looks around and is surprised to see not a single guard. He remembers the last guard he saw was before they entered the maze of alleys marking the entrance to the older part if the Banking District. After looking around the nearby alleys, Nessa was disappointed to find very few loiterers, none of whom she'd peg as Information Brokers. There was a gristled man in his late 20s, early 30s with gray hair exiting the church with a woman about 20, who looked like she could be his sister or companion. He said hello cordially to the party as he walked by, holding a large pocket of money he'd taken from his bank account. Two older looking peasants argued with each other in a nearby alley over the price of a vegetable one was selling. From the looks of it, the vegetable was worth less than half the price the salesman was demanding. Nessa looked up and noticed the clouds were getting quite close to the city. Perhaps, she thought, Marty would be waiting inside the bank. Before she acted upon that thought though, with her keen elven eyes, she noticed a shining gold piece that looked like it had been dropped by a banker or the gray-haired man... but could she stoop down low enough to pick it up? -

I'll Mayor: Li'l CorneliusMurdock. I don't think a scum would be so bold as to volunteer for the scrutiny the role entails, but I don't think it's important enough a role to matter, to be honest. Maybe when things get closer to even, later on it'll matter that the person breaking the ties is on our side, but for the time being, anyone who wants it can have it. Either way it'll provide us with Action results and behaviors to analyze.- 249 replies

Heroica RPG - Quest #62: Insider Trading
Dannylonglegs replied to Dannylonglegs's topic in The Heroica Archive
The party, having traced the source of the rumours back to an Information Broker named Marty the Face, member of the Cult of Mercutio in the Banking District, decided to head there to find him and perhaps get to the bottom of the unfolding crisis.... The party made its way through town on its way to the Banking District, It was around mid-day, and there were still few people in the streets. The town seemed quiet. As they crossed the bridge, they could see great storm clouds rolling in from the sea. Hopefully they were off the streets before the rain started. Entering the Banking District, the party was confronted with a startlingly large number of banks and accounting agencies. This part of town had fewer buildings, but the buildings it had were large and respectable looking. Remembering the comment that Bart had made about the shadier part of town being to the west, closer to the poor district, the party searched there. Sure enough, they eventually came across a maze-like series of alleys that lead to a large building with the words "Silver City Bank" engraved on the front. What would the party like to do? -
Yes, Endgame. Remember this 9 rounds from now. Remember this and know that the poison slowly eating away at Ediliooon's carapace and SP allowed us to have a "challenging boss fight even when the enemy is suffering a constant amount of damage each Round" Crumbling Poison iz Hakkzorz. As is the fact that he can't remedy himself. Me! ~Insectoid Arisotcrat

Hahaha! Perfect! I think the only ones she really couldn't pull off are a Black Knight and a Raider. She doesn't really have a brute side as far as I can tell, and she's not evil (I don't think). Assassin is sorta possible. She could pull-off an Irene-Adler-y type (it'd be different, but not horribly out of character, I don't think. (And I know Adler's not an assassin, that's just the closest character to what I mean)) Witch or Sorceress are certainly the best options, I think, and I'd have to agree with Eric about the sorceress. It really depends on how it's played. Neither is perfect just yet, but she's got plenty of time to grow into whichever she thinks is best. ~Insectoid Aristocrat

Oh certainly. Out of curiosity, how much of what you told the poor man was the truth? Does she really even worship Mercutio? I find your interactions with Nessa quite amusing too. It's a great dynamic, her haughty versus your immaturity. Classic. ~Insectoid Aristocrat

"Thank you, I'm sure I'll find something." The man said, smiling nicely for a brief moment. He turned away from her and back to Dreyrugr, who had been waiting for their conversation to end. "So, What were you saying?" The man asked Dreyrugr suspiciously. "I was offering you a new line of business," bluffed the Vampire. "Let's face it, the Cloth Market's crashed, and with all these rumours circulating..." "You've heard them too?" Queried the Merchant. "Of course. Very few informed business-men haven't. I'm looking to hire anyone who's looking for a way out of debt caused by the cloth market's collapse. It pays really well." finished the Vampire, having over-heard Karie acquire the crucial information already, and now looking for a way out of the conversation by intentionally sounding shady. "What kind of business." Questioned the Merchant, now less interested then before and not wanting to get mixed up in a scam. "Go outside the town near the West Wharves at sunset in two days and everything will be prepared" he said, placing his hand on the table and walking away to meet up with Karie (of course, not exposing the group). OoC: Since Vash the Stampede can't play on weekends, I resolved that conversation for him (some of the text was his) -
I personally really like Karie's character. I'll admit, I didn't read every post in your first quest, but, from what I've seen of her, I perceive her as a bit childish and... eccentric with an good understanding of theatre and artistic talent--to the point that she could be perceived as aristocratic or snobby--if it weren't for her pick-pockety street presence. I think her brand of theatrical rogue isn't a commonly seen one, but it's one that I personally find entertaining. I myself usually play bards in RPGs, and I think Karie'd make an excellent Minstrel unless you have other plans for her. I really like how you've played her in this market interaction too. True to character Karie was the most subtle and to-the-point. I imagine if this were DnD, you'd have rolled a pretty high number on your bluff check. ~Insectoid Aristocrat

The man chuckled at her display. Not offensively, but more to politely inform her that he was not going to be persuaded by her attractiveness--he was just being friendly. At least the laugh lightened up the man's sad face. "You know, you remind me of my sister." he chuckled affectionately. He looked around to see if any of the guards or the other traders were listening before telling her in a hushed tone. "You don't have to pay me. Not all of us are obsessed with money." He said, referring to their relationship as worshipers of Mercutio. "My source is a relatively well known information broker (among worshipers of Mercutio) who hangs around the alleys near the meeting place of the Cult of Mercutio. If you don't know where that is (it isn't common information after-all.) It's in the banking district, actually in the vault of one of the older banks, The 'City of Silver' Bank, if you wish to attend a service. Anyways, his name is Marty, or 'Marty the Face,' as some of his information gatherers/spreaders call him. He's the face of their organization. You can tell your mother that." he finished, saying 'your mother' in a way that made it clear he knew it meant something else, but unsure what, and didn't need to know. "huh? oh, uh, yeah. G'day Lady." "Well, uh, wow. That's some fascinating stuff. A great story." He stated in his inelegant way, clearly impressed. "When I was a kid, my pop told me stories of the great heroes who fought in the Orcish invasion. I'm directly descended from one of the Ennon Paladins who was tasked with getting the refugees out of Ennon. Me, though," he started, looking down at his gut. "I'm no knight. I don't think average men should go about doing heroic stuff and fighting with swords. That's stuff better left to the Lord and his Militia... Or the Queen and her army. Not a regular person that don't got no reason to fight." He chuckled at himself.
