Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Waterbrick Down replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Summons would be returned to a Drafter at the end of each battle, hence why they only have to pay the initial summon cost in ether. Unlike Necromancers who have to pay each time their summons attack, Drafters only pay an up front cost, at the cost of having to do it every battle. As Sandy mentioned, their attacks would be non-elemental. That's a great idea! I wasn't a big fan of Summon anyways, but thought a role-playing ability might be wanted. I'd like to keep Decamon Gamble as it contributes to the card-playing aspect of the class. I wanted to work in a way for the summons to be used defensively, but given the low cost of ether and with a well rounded deck, it'd be a little to easy to setup meatshield, unless you specifically summoned a card in defensive mode so that it couldn't attack, then I'd be more fine with that. Another mechanic I considered but didn't implement, instead of choosing the summon the Drafter would draw one at random, so there rolls would be like this: 2. GREATER WAGERED HIT/GREATER SUMMON: The Drafter attacks the target with strength equal to their weapon power times two, added to the number of unsummoned Decamon cards in their deck, added to their level. (e.g. WP 15 x 2 + 10 Unsummoned Decamon Cards + Level 30 = 70 damage). Alternatively the Drafter may summon three random monsters from their deck at Level equal to 3 times the card's strength at the cost of the cards' total strength in Ether. 3. WAGERED HIT/SUMMON: The Drafter attacks the target with strength equal to their weapon power, added to the number of unsummoned Decamon Cards in their deck, added to their level. (e.g. WP 15 + 10 Unsummoned Decamon Cards + Level 30 = 55 damage). Alternatively the Drafter may summon two random monsters from their deck at Level equal to 3 times the card's strength at the cost of the cards' total strength in Ether. 4. MEDITATE/LESSER SUMMON: The Drafter meditates to regain 1 ether. Alternatively the Drafter may summon one random monsters from there deck at Level equal to 3 times the card's strength at the cost of the card's strength in Ether. Adds a slight bit of randomness to the mix, but one could easily fix that by limiting the cards you keep in your deck, though you then cripple your WAGERED HIT strength. So Drafters can either focus on having lots of cards and having a really high attack strength or they can focus on having a few high strength cards and stick to summoning them. Too similar to Necromancer. Since monsters return to their deck at the end of battle and after a shield roll, then Drafter should always be pressed for ether. -
Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion

With all the past talk about Decamon and the new Fields of Glory drop I thought I'd set this here. The expert class is a summoner in the vein of Necromancer, Evoker, and Sylvian Ranger, but can keep multiple summons going and has a few more tactical choices. (Great Reputation with the City of Vega) These mystical card sharks take the game to a whole new level. · Additional Health: +4 · Additional Ether: +6 (+1 per level for classes without base ether) · Weapons: Drafters wield unassuming weapons like daggers, throwing weapons, whips, and clubs. They can utilize scrolls. · Job trait: Decamon Sacrifice: The Decamon Drafter can spend a turn to destroy one of their summoned allies in battle to restore health to themselves or one of their party members equal to the summon's level; Decamon Gamble: Each time the Decamon Drafter does damage, they can take a single gamble of double or nothing. Summon: Decamon Drafters can summon monsters from their deck outside of battle to perform menial tasks. All summons return to the Drafter's deck before the beginning of a battle and at the end of a battle. · Battle style: Strategic – Drafters are often deep in thought even in the middle of combat, their minds are their most valuable resource and every decision they make has the potential to shift the entire course of a battle. 1. SHIELD: All In – The Drafter summons the remainder of their entire deck with monsters of Level equal to three times the card's strength for zero Ether. At the end of the next round, all the Drafter's summons are returned to their deck. 2. Alternatively the Drafter may use one of their Decamon Cards to summon a corresponding elemental monster of Level equal to five times the card's strength at the cost of the card's Level in Ether. Alternatively the Drafter may use one of their Decamcon Cards to summon a corresponding elemental monster of Level equal to three times the card's strength at the cost of the card's Level in Ether. 4. MEDITATE/LESSER SUMMON: The Drafter meditates to regain 1 ether. Alternatively the Drafter may use one of their Decamcon Cards to summon a corresponding elemental monster of Level equal to the card's strength at the cost of the card's Level in Ether. 5. DAMAGE: The Drafter is struck by the opponent's attack. 6. SPECIAL DODGE: The Drafter has a 50/50 chance to dodge the opponent's special skill so that it hits the next ally in turn instead, unless the skill hits everybody. -

There have been a few battles that have essentially been one player simply tanking a poisoned enemy while the rest of the party sits back and does nothing. Anyone left standing in a battle at the end gains XP no matter what they did during it.

Skrall accepted the Mead and drained the contents. "Yer right, Hybros, I ain't a fan of these tight spaces and even less so of these ones. Too much reminder of my last dealin's down here, too much of a reminder of her..."
-
No, otherwise you've got a good way for something to become unbalanced fairly easily.
-
Bright Polish can be used on anything that already has SP, including shields.
-
We do have a treasury.

Skrall brought up the rear of the group. His mind was still on the visions, but he spoke little, his thoughts turned to Wren and the last time he had been deep underground.

"Can you point us in the direction of the nearest one?" -
Quite understandable. I've played a good number of pen and paper games and ran one or two myself and enjoyed allowing that freedom to my players. Unfortunately to keep the game balanced among 50 or so active players, the rule system has to stay fairly unmoving. As a QM in this game, if the opportunity presented itself, I might offer the player a 1/6 chance to change their weapon given the right circumstance (blacksmith availability or something like that) with the alternative of the weapon being destroyed, but perhaps that's something a QM and player should discuss in PM as opposed to a player just asking out of character.

If Skrall was played by Liam Neeson.

"Stations, what are those?" -
Make the class fit your character, not your character the class. I originally wanted Skrall to be a rogue, because that's his background, but I also wanted him to wield a bow, so as opposed to asking for rogues to have access to bows, I contented myself to making a roguish ranger. The rules are only as limiting as your imagination.

Skrall stared ahead into the darkness as his mind melded back from it's two visions, he remained quiet, before answering Ellaria's question. "What was and what may still be."

"I'm up for a little shopping too." Polly took out her growing pile of gold and gazed at it with a grin plastered across her childish face. The girl pulled her bear in tight to her. "Just think of all the fun stuff we can buy with this, Mr. Sanders." -

"You get back here right now fishy smelly man!" Polly fires another darkness spell off at the fleeing Arn, though the Red Dragon obscures her aim from the back row. -

Polly looked up at Lynne as she cowered behind the barrels, the small girl hugged her bear tightly, eyes closed and nodded at Lynne's words. Coming out from behind the cargo but still standing back, Polly drew her small dagger and pointed it at the bearded man, her eyes taking on a slight purple glow. The child let her bear fall to her side as a shadow of darkness seemed to elongate from the stuffed toy and surge towards Arn the Drowned. "No one, touches Mr. Sanders."
