Heroica RPG - Quest #128: A Study in Red Death

Boris watches Mhinak take aim at the adder and tries to stay clear of the barrel of the hand cannon. "Mhinak, you'd best deal with one of those rattlers, otherwise I'm leaving you to deal with it." -
"If you don't have any more quethtionth, I'll lead you to the dockth ath it ith growing dark out."

Yes and no, most ether based classes shield rolls only cost one to two ether, this would essentially make the Shield rolls of Battle Mage, Druid, Evoker, Mystic Knight (Debatable), Sage, Sorcerer, Witch, Minstrel, Weather Mage, Arch Mage, High Cleric, and Prophet in my opinion much better in terms of cost vs. effectiveness balance. In the current system Shield rolls have a lot of advantages vs. a normal roll. Generally speaking: Pros: Hits for more Damage Hits more enemies Costs the same or one more ether than a normal attack Cons: 1/6 chance of using it. This change would remove the advantage of less ether cost and make the roll seem as potent as say a Druid's mass revival.

OoC: Does the Red Rattlesnake special mean it can only be attacked by close-up weapons (i.e. clubs, daggers, swords, etc) or that one can only attack from the "front-row"? Also is the Red Rattlesnake's special just considered Doomed? Boris looked at the goblin, "Well these aren't arrows, so keep your distance. Actually, mind using one of yours to handle that reptile over there." Boris indicated Red Rattlesnake A. "The rest of you fan out and work on the red ones." Boris brought his mace crashing down on the Black Adder from the Front Row. Battle Order: Mhinak Germ Nalguz Goblin Dog Na'im Boris -
Do note, Druid's can only revive on 1 roll out of 6, and while more powerful classes can pin point revive, Druid's revive en mass, which means your top Druid (Level 29) as the last one standing in a battle with a party of six will have their entire ether drained in one roll, no other advanced ether class does that. Are we saying revival is essentially that expensive, or are we just pulling the number 5 from out of a hat? On a somewhat different note, what if all spell/healing cost 1 ether per monster/PC it affected, just like arc spells & arc healing?

"Thhould be a crew of three or four of them. Mainly thupplieth that the clanth can't produce on their own. You know, thugar, freth vegitables, textileth, that kind of thuff. The clanth are pretty thelf thufficient, but they can't make everything on their own."
-
"They've no idea who you are, you'll be tharting with a clean thlate." "They cleared out a golem infethtation for the Brumpkin clan if I recall. It'th not that you have to be dithinterethed in the mythril, we juth don't want you're invethigation tied back to uth."
-
"I wouldn't thay they are adverthe to all outthiderth, only thnoopy oneth. If you can convince them you're there on other matterth not related to mythril, I'm thure they'd be more willing to tolerate your company."

I keep determining one day to run a game at one of the Lego conventions. Much more basic than what we're playing here, most people who've heard of Heroica only know it for the board game.

I used Brickshelf for awhile, but I'm lazy and don't like resizing my own pictures, so I'm now on Flickr.

Flickr resizes everything for you, paint & gimp both work as well. There's a few websites that'll do it for free as well.

OoC: OoC: It's been over 24hrs since his last post, go ahead. "So you all really think this pooch is worth it?" -
"Indeed it is, I thought I had you there for a moment." Eobald disappointingly hands the 20 Gold to Atramor, "If you'd ever like a rematch, I can be found at the Shelbric Inn & Suites. A good night to you.The elf gathers up his cloak and exits the tavern. "Mr. Fru will do, or Fromptiouth if you prefer. Yeth, yeth, on to the reathon I thelected you all." The Lapid smiled and took a drink from his goblet. "Ath you may or may not know the metal, mythril, is one of the motht thought after commoditieth in the whole of Olegaia. Many yearth ago, the Bonaparteth of Eubric Freeport ethablithed trade negotiationth with the Dwarven clanth that dwell under Mount Ulytheth which jutht happenth to thit on one of the largeth veinth of mythril outthide of the High & Low Kingdomth. Up until recently trade hath continued uninterrupted and conditionth between the two partieth hath been amiable. A few month back the Dwarven traderth began jacking up their pricth, thome thort of claimth of high demand/low thupply all of that. Theveral yearth back a party of adventurerth like yourthelveth vithited the mineth and claimed to have witnethed a vein tho large ath to upthet the entire economy of the free ithlandth, tho we have our doubtth concerning the clanth' most recent claimth. We've tried getting thome of our own people in there but to no avail. The clanth aren't taken to normal thurface dweller visitorth to begin with and they aren't partial to thnoopth. I've worked for the Bonaparteth for theveral yearth athithting with their trade negotiationth and you can believe me when I tell you thomething thmellth fithy. What we need you to do is get your way inthide and confirm whether or not the clanth are telling the truth and if they aren't, why. A Dwarven caravan is thetting out tonight heading back under the mountain, I'll thee you to the dockth where the caravan ith leaving from, the retht I'll leave up to you. Any quethtionth? "

A pair of ears stood straight up and a voice answered from the back corner booth where En Sabah Nur was sitting. "That would be me." As the heroes join him, the Lapid turns and gazes across the tavern. "I think we're about finithed up here. Eobald, you can finith up your game with Mr. Gibbon. The retht of you can take your leave, the remainder of your pay will be round in the morning. My good barkeep, a round of drinkth for thethe fine folkth" Frumptious indicates the remaining heroes. The crowd empties from the bar and as the bar tender delivers the drinks to the corner table the rabbit man eyes the heroes up and down. "Yeth, yeth, you will do well indeed. A compathionate heart, a lithening ear, a throng hand, and if I'm not mithtaken" Frumptious looks over at Atramor finishing up his game, "a keen mind."

I'm not suggesting we can't lobby criticism mid-game, I just believe it can be done privately first.
-
Unless it's utterly game-breaking I don't see why we can't just hold our criticism for quests till after they are completed. If the QM is unsure about the way they are conducting their quest they can ask for opinions privately or publicly in the appropriate topics. If an outside-observer has questions or criticisms they feel must be said mid-game they can easily PM the QM and offer suggestions. Levying public criticisms mid-game against things that are not game breaking seems to me a rather sad attempt at saying, "Sandy, he/she is making my character/time that I put into the game less valuable because of how they're QMing and I want to make sure you know about it." To Lind or any new QM's, if you really aren't sure about something or want to get a second opinion send one of the more experienced QM's a PM, we're generally more than happy to help. We won't run your quest for you, but we can steer you in the right direction.

Boris eyed the trail ahead stained red. "The blood leads straight ahead, I suggest we follow before we're too late. The canine is free to help his master now on his own." First time, though Retak Ysp was technically undead for a few years.

'Well Mr. Gibbon, we must all face the inevitable at some point." Tesni holds the man still while Ellaria works her healing upon him restoring his hand. The Pog sits back to down disappointed. "Thank you, Miss?" "Well then, your companion theemth like the compathionate thort."

I heard an intersting thought the other day. Good RPing is not sticking to a set of principles and being unmoved by anything, it is knowing when to let your character's principles be bent and when to bend other character's principles. In everyday life we are constantly having to interact with people, we can't simply stick to our principles and things continue on as normal, they are going to affect how others perceive us and interact with us. Lind's choice is a viable one, but also one I hope he has to pay for just as he'd have to pay for the consequences if he had gone with the ladies. I'd find it more interesting if heroes actions had more impact on how the world interacted with them in the future, i.e. Lind's reputation as a womanizer who uses his good looks to get what he wants spreads and he has issues later on down the line when he tries to use the same bit.

"And you always travel with these... bodyguards?" Eobald plays Pegasus (Luminous 8) taking the sandman before laying his final card: Shedu (Rock 5) At this point there's a yelp from the bar as it seems the man cleaning his fish had managed to cut himself quite severely. "Sod! Sod, sod, sod!" "Hmmm tasty."

Shaman: No dispute Paladin: I'm with Scuba, I think Paladin is already balanced enough. Druid: No dispute Black Knight: Are we worried Black Knight is too powerful? Evoker: I'm alright with this, normally Evokers do more damage than your average Mage, but this puts them closer to the damage output of Hunter. Minstrel: I think they're necessary changes to make the class balanced. Dragoon: I still don't agree with the arguments against mistrust, I think it would be better if mistrust applied to Dragoon's who switch out of the class and then come back into it. It's a class meant for the long haul. If there needs to be compromise maybe not let mistrust kick in till after level 40. Necromancer: While Necromancer's burn through ether, I think they're doing it in a way that most mage classes should for the amount of power they wield. I'd be against this change. Cannoneer: No dispute. Alchemist: Agree with Scuba, the current roll needs to go, but this is kind of bland, I'll try to think of a better suggestion. Beast Warrior: No dispute. Weather Mage: I'm with Scuba, adds another complex result to an already complex class. High Cleric: No dispute. Archmage: No dispute. Mime: No dispute, unlimited usage should be the realm of Artisans. Prophet: No dispute. While I like the changes aside from an adjustment to some of the shield rolls, I don't think it really deals with the issue of ether users (outside of Necromancers) ever having to worry about running out of Ether at the higher levels. I am thinking about how to address it but I still haven't come up with a good solution in my mind. Sounds like more of an issue with your QM, something you can easily address by talking it over with them in PM. This really concerns anyone, if you'd prefer to have your character portrayed in a different light in battle than hash them out privately.

"Pardon gladly granted." The elf's smile returns. "and no, my name is Eobald Dasher and you are?" The elf turns back to Atramor. "Mr. Gibbon, I hope my latest play hasn't put you out of sorts. Tell me what brings the Fiery champion all the way out here to Shelbric."
