  1. I was pretty sure I'll get this set even when I saw the preliminary pictures and videos. I was even surer when I read through your review. Then I saw the comparison with 8265 (which I own and loved) and there's not a doubt in my mind I'm getting this set. If for nothing else then for the PF stuff. I guess no V2 receiver's for me... Unless I get the crawler too. Thanks for the review!
  2. Looks great and seems to be performing well on downhill sections, but what about uphill?
  3. Congratulations to the winner(s)!
  4. Very nice review, Rufus. I'd just like to refer to this part: I don't think it was a joke so I must say - that type of a recovery truck is quite common in certain parts of the world:
  5. Simply beautiful!
  6. This is beautiful, bravo!
  7. Anyone noticed the new pushbroom mold? Or is it just me? I wish I had the one on the pictures to compare... I like the set, as well as the rest of Friends sets.
  8. Yes, it will definitely. Plus the PPTO has "round" ends so as to slip the hose easily whereas a regular 3L hose has flat (straight cut) ends.
  9. @tripletschiee: 2) Yes, forgot to mention it but I didn't mind because it's just an error in the instructions, not the model itself. 4) I believe so. As I mentioned earlier, it's really really really hard to steer it in place. All of the axles bend so much it's a pain to do it. 5) I was thinking about that too. The pistons really do move too slowly. 6) I thought it had something to do with how easily a child could press those parts together but it didn't make sense. 7) Wow! I totally missed that!
  10. @Seluryar: No. All of them have been withdrawn, fixed and sent back to stores so there shouldn't be a faulty one in any store anymore.
  11. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention* that the cable is supposed to hang loosely under the undercarriage but that problem is easily fixed as shown on the picture. On the single towball I see what you mean though I don't see why there's no such thing on the other side. And those two on the front axle are still a mystery. I don't think they're here to center the axle while steering, at least they don't do that after replacing the connector to center the axle. EDIT November 2012: * - I added it to the original post.
  12. @T_Tank: There is little room in the chassis and even making nothing but steering and propulsion (and removing all other functions) would still take a lot of modifying to make it PF RC ready. So much in fact I've given up on the idea. Oh and a big thanks to two friends of mine that made it possible for me to have the set so early! @Anio: Do you know the purpose of those towball pins I've mentioned in the review? Because I have no idea...
  13. Moving on with the review. Chassis is the first submodel. Notice the towball pin in front of the motor. It has absolutely no function. Or does it? * Also, the cable is supposed to hang loosely under the undercarriage but that problem is easily fixed as shown on the picture. Notice the towball pins on the front axle presumably for blocking suspension travel but not carrying out that function. Second submodel is the cabin. Attached to the chassis via pins just like the rest of the submodels. Notice the red pin in front of the engine. That's the block for tilting the cabin. If you want the cabin down you have to push it forward. It's then locked with more pins. Next is the bed. Nothing too special in it other than those 12 lovely panels. Up comes the crane. Pretty big one, too. Winch is another unspecial cool part. Finally complete. And now it's time for the functions. Fist up is steering which has a waaay too weak lock (maximum angle). See for yourselves. I mean really, is that it? Not to mention how hard it is to steer it in place - impossible, the model is too heavy! But I guess that's cool because real vehicles are also easier to steer while driving. I tried to illustrate the weak turning angle in this sequence but I'm not sure I've made it. The above pictures do a better job. The suspension however is fantastic. It doesn't tip over. Nice isn't it? Outriggers/stabilizers are perfect. Deployed with a click they lock the Mog in place. Rotating the crane about 340° total. Blocked by the very axle that rotates it. As low as it can go. As high as it can go. Wow, this model is huge! I'm not going to go through all of the functions but just list them as most of you already know them all: one M motor for: - mechanical function (winch or rotating the crane) or - pneumatic function (front or rear attached) - all three cylinders That means there are a lot of switches and with the stickers not applied it was hard to learn them all but once you catch it it goes just like that. Here's an action shot (though rims are not the usual load for this type of vehicle). And so long as we have the rims... Isn't this what a Mog should look like? (Just google "unimog orange" and see what I mean - 95% have black rims.) (And a bonus: Who can tell me what's missing? ) To wrap it up: 10/10 for everything despite the error, weak angle and hard steering and gray rims. Big for LEGO. That's pretty much it unless you have any questions. Hope you've enjoyed. EDIT November 2012: * - LEGO says it's there to support the frame and it really seems to be so.
  14. @efferman: It takes quite a bit of force to pull the power joint apart. From what I remember it could be twice as much as to get the hemispheres out of a turret. And they're not compatible, I just compared the dimensions.
  15. @DLuders: It's an error in the whole model (instructions, parts list and finally the part itself). But it's really easy to spot it as the axles are identical apart from this piece and you can see something's not right. Anyway, for those who don't want to discover it for themselves: It's the only part of the front axle (steering not included) that differs from the rear axle and once fixed everything works perfectly. @mind storm: I can't promise anything.
  16. For the firts part I'll just let the pictures speak for them selves. You can see Matija Grguric and myself on some pictures and of course first we admired the box. And now onto the review. I know all of those interested in this set already know all the links but still: Bs link BL link UNIMOG U400 - 2011 The scale is not too precise but it is a pretty heavy box. Everyone's already seen these sides of the box. And we're onto the interesting part! 3.7 meters of hose! An interesting detail of the box is the pictures on the back go inside the box a bit. No, the wheels don't come as assemblies. Nearly didn't fit on the table. New parts. 64cm (80L) hoses are new as well. And as everyone guessed, the portal axles can be made in 16-16, 12-20 and 8-24 combos. A part of the U-joint goes in the portal block for a pivot point closer to the wheel. From left to right: soft, medium, hard. I don't have all three types of the big ones but I'm guessing by the looks of the spring (compared to the smaller shocks) that the Unimog ones are medium stiffness*. Although a bit smaller in dimensions the new tires don't look smaller than the balloon ones. Yes, axle fits through the new CV joint. Once you "click" the joints in the portal axle blocks you can pretty much forget about ever getting them out. Power joints are certainly cool. I forgot to check the compatibility with turrets. Oh well, I'll check after I dismantle the Mog**. All of the pieces in the box. Nicely filled, very colorful. 5 (!) instruction booklets and sticker sheets. Most stickers are fit for tiles which is a big plus. The LEGO Systems A/S sticker goes on the bottom of the Mog which is also cool but you won't see me apply any of the stickers here. Some parts of the build. Of course, the booklets are split in no logical place in the build. As with the 8146, the wheels are not the last pieces in the build. They are put on the chassis before the cabin, bed and crane. These are the leftover pieces. Notice the connector. I had to replace that one with this one (from my own collection) because of an error in the build. Both axles are identical apart from this little error that made the front one work less good (and of course the steering). What the error exactly is is up to each of the future Mog owners to discover for themselves***. ...and a review of the functions is yet to come. EDIT November 2012: * - This has been proven wrong. ** - Incompatible. *** - LEGO says it's not an error and you can find some articles about it around the internet.
  17. Yes Rufus, you got it right. Though in Off-Roader it's liftarm-studpins-jumpers-rack so I was surprised that wasn't the case here. The function is the same but the difference is still interesting, right?
  18. I know this is a rather late review but there isn't one yet and there's some interest in this set. 8146 Nitro Muscle - 2007 Bs link BL link I bought two of the set via BrickLink because I wanted to have four of the larger (rear) tires and they only ever came in this set*. My original idea was to buy one set and an extra set of all wheels but there are no more of the x1825 tires on BL**: tire+rim (as you can see - no lots for sale) tire alone (rapidos2 didn't have them when I was making my orders) (The rims and the smaller (front) tires are not a problem as they came in other sets too.) The x1825 tires are very similar to 2997 ones but there is a small difference in dimensions so they're not really compatible with the same rims. 2997 fits only on rims that come in white and x1825 on rims that come in black and light gray and bley which are more "rimmy" colors. I bought one MISB and one unboxed set for cheaper shipping (from different sellers - the cheapest two that were on BL at the time). The back of the box showing functions as always. No alternative models in this set. One thing becomes apparent at first glance of the box. 1:1? I don't think so. Single-book instructions are always nice. Chrome stickers (the wheel is here for scale and reflection). I don't apply my stickers to sets as I buy sets for the parts and not the sets themselves so I think I'm going to apply some of these stickers to tiles if I'll need them. The small ones are fit for tiles - applied as one long sticker (1x14) but split into three small ones (1x4+1x5+1x5) which I think is great. Contents of the box in the box (minus the sheet and the book). The box is made of surprisingly soft cardboard. Out of the box. Notice the twin and triplet bags, none numbered. Out of the bags and into the box. Pieces of interest: the already mentioned tires, yellow corner panels (20 of them in the set), engine blocks and Technic panels (3 pairs). Other parts worthy of mentioning are black long pins of extremely high clutch power (I guess that's why they switched to blue), red bushes, a lot of yellow connectors (although only a few different types) and old (ridged) axle joiners. A part of the building process. Notice the asymmetry of the rack. An interesting thing is the wheels are not the last pieces in the build. Instead they're put on before the bodywork submodel. The finished model. I think it justifies the size of the box. Leftover pieces. Pretty empty model but it wasn't unexpected. No comment. Not too pretty I'd say. A tiny rim on the back for steering and a hole that can fit a fist are simply... I don't know that to say. Why does the grill not go up with the rest of the bodywork or why there are virtually no front mudguards is a mystery to me. Also you can see the rather empty interior. The NOS bottles are nice but the interior could use a lot of work. And finally the steering wheel is horrible. It's fit to scale with the seat (which is waaay too small for this car), not functional and can't even be turned freely. Instead this is what you can do with it. I think the following improvements could be made to this set: attach the grill to the rest of the bodywork, add front mudguards, replace the seat and the steering wheel, add a HOG wheel, fill all the holes, add a diff and connect it to a V8 engine under the engine blocks. I have no idea how I'd rate this set as I've only bought it for the parts (mainly the wheels) but I'll try. Design: 4/10 Build: 5/10 Playability: 8/10 Parts: 8/10 Price: 5/10 Overall: 6/10 Hope you've enjoyed the review and if you want those rare tires better hurry. There's only 28 sets and 3 tires left on BL. *** EDIT (November 2012): *- Up until the 42000 Grand Prix Racer in 2013. **- Of course the situation is different now. ***- Not now, obviously.
  19. It's all been said. This is an amazing MOC.
